    I just took apart my Vespa Cypher. I could not believe the beautiful machining inside it. The parts were just done perfectly. There was hardly any oil in it so I removed the oil and put Lyman Super Moly dry lube on all the sliding surfaces. No oil means no dust attached or held in the knife by gooey oil. The moly is burnished into the metal wherever they touch. A six-ounce bottle of Lyman Super Moly is a lifetime supply for a hundred of these auto knives. You can also buy moly in a spray can, but it gets all over the place and stains everything.
    Compared to the Microtech knives I have taken apart, you would think the Micro's were using cheap parts compared to the Vespa
    I still have the first Micro Scarab I bought in 2005. It has held up well and still works like new.

      I honestly run my knives dry unless they need it. If they need it I use rem oil because it has a very low viscosity. I personally do not recommend dry lubes in an OTF knife. But you can use whatever works for you.

    I am really hyped and really respect that Vespa keeps trying to improve and refine their products to the next level! Such quality control and innovation. I do hope they will branch out and create their own flag ship knife someday when they're ready. I'd love to see what they come up with!

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have made promises way too early in the past. But I have been promised great things are coming soon. You see vespa when they got the feedback on the last knife as great as it was they wanted to make it even better. They really do have intentions on branching out and doing more originals. They like other companies need to build a following until they have the means to do so. That time seems to be approaching. That's all I can say at this point. But yeah, that's why it took 2 years for this knife to be released. They wanted it to be perfect, and damn if they didn't reach their goal.

    well i made the jump and bought one . ive done this before long time ago with italian switchblades . lets see what happens hope its as good as the one you have . I feel the prices of the real stuff is just ridiculous I own alot of guns and i cant justify paying the same price as a handgun for a knife .

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neither can I. Which Is why I made the switch. I have real micros. I like these better even if they were the same price. That's why they are such a damn good deal. Now the ONLY thing that might happen is a couple guys reported that the knife had some manufacturing residue inside causing some hangups. IF that happens all you gotta do is flush it with lighter fluid and let it drain. After its dry just add a couple drop of rem oil and divide it up on each flat of the blade as well as the spine and lockface. Cycle it a few times and wipe off the rest. If you are more daring and want to really get in there and experience the beauty take it apart and clean the inside thoroughly. Reassemble and apply the rem oil. No one has reported an issue beyond that.

    Bought one of these, you are correct about the machining quality but mine did have firing issues out of the box. Mainly the springs are a little weaker than they should be as they seem to struggle with retracting the blade upside down. I opened it up and added a little molybdenum disulfide grease on the slow moving high load parts like under the button and the sear edges, and the spring chassis. Used a thin teflon oil on the blade tracks. Stop pin was rattling in the blade so added a dab of moly grease to silence that as well. Now it runs like it should. I have the Andy-made Combat Troodon clone also, and like it much better as the action is like a bullet compared with the rather relaxed action of the Vespa, but this Vespa is beginning to grow on me. I am going to buy the Interceptor version in gold next. Other differences with the Andy-made are as follows:
    1)Andy's handle is likely 6061-T6 versus as you stated 7075 for the Vespa
    2)Blade steel is M390 for the Andy-made vs S35VN for the Vespa
    3)Andy's blade is negligibly smaller in breadth and length, with no inlay just the standard milling
    4)Andy's button requires more effort but is just as smooth(I lapped the internals on 1000# sandpaper spray mounted to 1/4" glass plate to get the grit out of the action, as Andy's internals are not stonewashed thus have a little roughness to them. I believe he makes them on a laser-sintering 3D printer). Springs are noticeably higher rate.
    5)Andy's button does not have a spring underneath, and is a copy of the Microtech 'X' button found on the Ultratechs
    6)Andy's blade fires like a rocket compared to the Vespa
    7)Vespa's button rattles a little bit, despite being tensioned by a small spring underneath. I silenced it with a little MoS2 grease. It's made to a little looser fit than Andy's.
    8)Screws are a proprietary Andy design and Ultratech sized.
    After polishing/lapping the internals just a tad, the Andy-made Combat Troodon clone is still my favorite. Andy has removed them from his DHGate store, but I have contacted him about it and he said he merely sold out and will be producing more. I highly recommend you try one of his Combat Troodons next to see what you think. I still like both, and will be buying another of both. Cannot seem to stop flicking them in & out, completely addicted.

    • @purpledc1

      Many of us are finding the same thing. But its not a tolerance or spring issue. Its a simple matter of contaminants from manufacturing. Many of us have been discussing it in the comments section and what I have found is the best way to handle it is to break the entire knife down and clean every part with windex. The locking sears can remain untouched. After a good cleaning and assembly a little rem oil on the flats and lock face and no one has had any more issues. But it looks like you figured that out. As for how a hard the knife fires mine has none of mine have any problems retracting upside down. And its my belief that these knives should only have enough power to reliably work. Excessive spring power can lead to accelerated wear on some of the parts. Plus, I get guys every single day it seems complaining to me that their knives are too hard to fire. Now I know they just need to get a stronger thumb but most don't want to hear it. And if the knives got any harder to fire I would never hear the end of it. And unfortunately the stronger the spring the harder the knife will be to operate. Either way its an incredibly simple modification to increase the power of an OTF. You simply remove coils off each spring until you are happy with the performance. Just note that cutting off too many coils will result in a blade that flies too fast and will start failing to lock without other mods to correct the clock work of the mechanism.

    Your reviews on this knife has absolutely sold me. My only problem is the vendor you recommend is sold out. I think I've seen you say (if not, I may be thinking of someone else) in the past, that not all of the vendors on that website have the same standards as chinahighendedc. Could you recommend a vendor with the Vespa Troodon, please? Or, would you know about when chinahighendedc will have more?

      you know normally I really try to carry a knife for awhile before I give my endorsement but in this particular case its such a rare example of excellence that I felt it was necessary to get the word out as soon as I could. Its an stellar example of quality that you normally cant touch at this price. I literally have never seen a knife like this go for less than $500 even used. It really is OTF to own IMHO. As for the cypher I am expecting that in about a week. And I expect great things.

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any vespa is a great knife and compares very very favorably against knives costing 2-3 times as much from other makers especially if you could even get some of the custom options a vespa has. Some of these styles are sold out right now but vespa is always looking to do something new. Not sure if you are seriously considering a Lightning knife. Those while inexpensive will not have the same quality or longevity. A vespa knife you can depend on for a long long time and they give parts and a tool to fix it. And a pouch. All great things most companies either don't offer or charge extra for.

    I want 1 lol. But I live in the UK and these never make it through customs 😭😭😭 honestly ive tried 5 or 6 times from different places. Never arrived and I've lost atleast 1300 pounds. But chinahighend hav assured me they'll send it in 2 packages disassembled . Now that just might work lol. But still I'm so worried. I've been disappointed so many times but I'm going to try this 1 last time.

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am sorry. I live in the states so its a bit easier for us to import things. One thing they should really do is sell these with a dummy comb blade that you replace with a live blade. The disassembled knife may draw attention. But if it was a comb no one would give a shit. And a blade alone no one will know what they are looking at.

    Just went with the gold s/e, very excited! I was really torn between the gold and the blue, in the end I think gold pops best with cf, I know it's a subjective reason, but hey :-)
    I forgot to mention another huge selling point for me was that they throw in the springs and tool, such an over the top kicker! The one biggest fear when purchasing any auto is that someday you may need a part! way cool of them to include what you need. American companies better take some cues from them soon or they'll be run outta business lol.

    I ordered one immediately after seeing this video about 4 months ago. After some shipping issues and the re-sending of another one, I finally got mine. Fit in finish is great on the outside. Is there a break in period cuz mine misfires when closing. A lot! Also, mine has plenty of blade play. Much different from yours.

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jon Clark the biggest issue Vespa has is cleaning parts before assemble. People have reported the issue you are having and what I recommend people do is tear the knife down and with a terry cloth use some winded and clean every part until you are not getting any reissue on the rag. Dry any remaining windex and reassemble. Then apply a single drop of rem oil to the flat of the blade near the handle on a flat side and speed that drop lung a weeding
      Ring around the blade. Cycle it a few times and you should be good. Blade play should be checked while grabbing the blade near the handle. All da Otf knives have play unless it’s a deadlock. Is this your first?

    • @purpledc1

      I believe they are sharpened. But just remember that something like that even if totally functional could cause issues later on due to any shredded crap getting inside the knife. I would think of them as decorative or semi functional in the event you absolutely have to stick the thing in someones leg which of course I cant recommend one do either, lol.

    Now im guessing dhgate is the only place to get it. And it will probably be sized. There a website in the USA? Tge microtech has a collectors value so yes keeping it nice us s good choice. I like the vespa dark otf that grindeorx have for 264$ but I rather have this one. Where can I get this domestically?

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have purchased over 100 knives from aliexpress and dhgate. Never had a knife seized. And yes microtechs have a collectors value. But their cost prevents many from ever using them especially if the collector value is all that matters to you. As far as materials go the vespas are actually superior to a production microtech and fall between a production and a custom in terms of features and materials. There is no USA source for these knives.

      @aarongentile7232 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, What is special about the Vespa's that cost over $300-$400? There see to be 2 different styles. Is it only because of the polished blade, or is there more than that to justify the price? Thanks

  • @m.s.l.7746
    @m.s.l.7746 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's easy to still make a profit at $150 since they're making the parts in bulk. As long as their blade steel claims are true & price stays the same then they will prosper as a company. Next they need to alter the design to be their own I think (or at least make an original model to complement this version).

    Nice looking knife, But I can almost guarantee it's not S35VN! Thanks for sharing

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can positively guarantee you that it is. The steel on these knives has been tested. LuvThemKnives channel has many videos with the results of such testing of various brands.
      China has access to s35vn and m390. They bought so much m390 in fact that it wasnt available for awhile and manufacturers started using CTS204P as a substitute as it was available and very similar.
      The parts for these knives are made in the same factories and on the same machines as many well known high end chinese brand name companies that are flooding the markets in the states. This just happens to be a private label that sells direct from china given the laws about importing switchblades for interstate commerce.
      They make premium versions and lower end versions from the same company. The quality of the execution is the same regardless of the materials but there are visual differences even in the way chinese D2 and S35VN take a polished and machine satin finish. You can visibly see the differences in the alloy. And again they have been tested.
      Now there are many companies that do in fact lie about the materials. But these are usually the companies making straight out forgeries with logos and serial numbers. You dont have to believe it. There is a whole subculture of flat earth type conspiracy theorists out there that have made every claim I can imagine about these knives.
      Everything from the chassis are made from radioactive scrap metal to the carbon fiber not being real carbon fiber and the titanium not being titanium or such a low grade it couldnt take and anodized finish (that it actually has and looks beautiful).
      Here are the facts. They really use the steel they claim. They know how to properly heat treat it consistently. Their CNC capabilities for blade grinds and finish quality surpasses microtech by embarrassing amounts and I own and love my micros. The anodized finishes are not as well done. They use a different process that does not look as quality as a microtech or other milspec anodizing. The actions tend to have less blade play and I find I need to keep them cleaner to stay as reliable. As for sharpness the micros have a toothier edge while the vespas come with a polished edge done by hand on various wheels but they look like they were done on a machine they are so precise. Thats what I know.

They even sell the proprietary screws separately for spare parts.

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      links? I mean yes, the combat troodon has been a knife in the MT lineup for over a decade. But are we talking this exact configuration and inlays? There is no doubt that they made an exact clone of a Combat. But I would never confuse this with any microtech I have seen. And while it has some features of a Marfione custom it also has several distinctions.

    • @Excalibur01
      @Excalibur01 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look up the Marfione Combat Troodon Bearing Grade brass. I was browsing actual Microtech knives and saw this. It makes sense since the clone had to have based their concepts off of something
      I think they took the carbon fiber inserts from the Marfione custom and placed it inside a standard plain Marfione Combat Troodon body.

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually it is a matter of just taking it apart, cleaning every part with windex and reassembling. If it still misfires afterwards a tiny tiny TINY amount of rem oil on the flats of the blade usually sort it out.

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bdpf1744 pro tips. When you take the knife apart disengage the blade before you do. The spring may not go flying because its attached to the carrier with clips but it still will make it easier separating while keeping it all close by. Also there is a pin in the blade. I like to put a tiny dab of grease on the side of that pin and then wipe off all excess with a an alcohol wipe. This prevents that little piece from rattling if in your pocket. When reassembling I recommend blue loctite but it will be most effective after cleaning the screws with alchohol. You probably got back up screws but to prevent them from walking out at all loctite is your friend. Side of the screw at the tip but not on it. Tiny bit. If you use too much it will settle on the blade, harden and make the knife unreliable.

    • @SuperArtarded
      @SuperArtarded 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, I have fixed the knife.
      1. Spring under the button was too weak, replaced with one of the extras that had more tension
      2. There was a lot of machining waste in the tracks of the knife, weirdly did not make it seem gritty, but hard to tell since it is an otf, a good cleaning and light polishing of some minor scratches and it seems to be working 100 percent. I just use motor oil with a little transmission fluid as a lubricant.
      I would advise anyone to take this knife apart before you even fire it one time, would probably save some polishing, or I may have just got unlucky with a dirty one, overall I would retract my statement to stay away, definitely a high value knife with excellent fit and finish if you are the type of person that doesn't mind it not working flawlessly out of the box, a little elbow grease goes a long way with this one. I have the silver trodoon with the single blade top faux serations.

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok. I would clean it out. Use some lighter fluid to make sure all residual crap is outside the knife. Then after all parts are clean and dry reassemble but use a very small amount of rem oil on the lockface, and the blade flats and spine. Just a half a drop on each flat, the spine and the lock face. Mine works perfectly after that.

      No. Importing one for yourself is in most cases not an issue. But because of the laws regarding interstate commerce and automatic knives. Specifically imported automatic knives you don't get many people interested in selling them. You do see them pop up at knife shows and gun shows fairly often but people attach a hefty premium to them. I can assure you the process for buying off of DHgate or aliexpress is much like amazon or ebay. I have never been scammed. And I have ordered a lot of knives. Including from numerous profiles just to confirm I wasn't getting special treatment because they knew I would be reviewing a purchase. Its not like it was 15 years ago and these sites were questionable on if you would even get something shipped to you.

    Better hurry up because most of the D/E models are already sold. The silver D/E is all gone now. Glad I placed my order when I did.

      Should I be worried I zombie ordered this and it's coming via epacket?

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nope. No need to worry. Many times the type of shipping varies depending on many factors. The most important of which is what is moving fastest and what they feel will ensure customers getting their products. Even in the event your item has a problem in shipping they will stand behind it no matter what.

      Matt C it took 8 days for my order to make it to the Los Angeles distribution center. During that time period there is no tracking information available.

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the benefit of Epacket is it comes fairly quickly. But with any foreign mail if its not sent express or priority then you don't get tracking. And even then many times it wont work until its in the USA.

      What does your tracking actually say? If you haven't got a confiscation letter then it could just be held up.

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't panic. Many of us (customers and I) are discovering that these knives are coming with some contaminants inside the knife from manufacturing. But with a little tlc you will be right as rain. Basically what I tell people to do is break down the knife with the tool provided. Do not remove the locks in the handle. They are fine. But you want to remove the blade and firing assembly. Clean everything with windex on a terry cloth towel. No paper towels as they can leave lint behind. After you have everything clean, you can put a tiny dab of grease under the springs if desired though it isn't necessary. Then I just reassemble it. After reassembly re engage the blade but before operating it put a few drops of very extremely light machine oil. I prefer rem oil as it is super thin and effective and wont gum up your action. Place a small drop on the spine, each flat of the blade and the lock face (what most would call a sharpening choil) and operate it. You should be good to go. If it misfires a few months down the road just give it another dose of rem oil. You can pick it up at Walmart for a couple dollars. Do not use thick viscous oils like nano lube or militec.

      also if you are not comfortable I can do the service for you free of charge and give you a nice satin or mirror custom button top and sides. Your choice on any combination of satin and mirror on the button. I do that by hand. All I ask is you pay the shipping.

      Hey Richard, If you don't mind me asking...what color is your handle on your knife?( blue by any chance) I am starting to wonder if this is a blue handle issue.

    • @purpledc1
      @purpledc1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny you mention that. The blue knife in my first video was the one that I disassembled and said was giving problems out of the gate. It does seem to be the color most affected. And it was that way with the original run.

      They use specific carriers and make sure to send products through certain channels to ensure they don't get flagged. I'm sorry but with prying eyes and such has me hesitant to go into any further specifics as it would jeopardize the system that ensures everyone gets their product. And in the event your item does not make it to you remember that delivery is guaranteed. They will either send another or refund you.

      What did you delete your message all ready? Yes that was my response. When you stop by just to take a shit and shame me for what I can only assume is your misinformation yes that is the response you get from me. You want mature adult like replies? Make mature comments or questions then. You will get treated exactly how you behave when dealing with me. Now the reason I said you were ignorant and asked you who you are defending is because the company in question (microtech) steal designs. Many of their designs are stolen from other makers and no credit given for their ideas. So when you come at me over people "stealing creativity" to me it shows you either don't know about the designs they have stolen (hence my use of the word "ignorant") or you feel that because they are microtech and a USA based company that the company gets carte blanche. I feel if you steal designs, then you cant get all whiny when someone steals your designs. Eye for an eye so to speak. I'm sorry if you felt slighted by my response. But please try to think about how many comments like yours I deal with on an ongoing basis. From where I'm at anyone rushing to defend microtech over stolen designs is either misinformed or they just feel that the rules don't apply to them. I do hope you understand my position and no hard feelings.

      I had to rethink why I wrote that (shame), it's kinda lame and for that I apologize, I'm new to this type of social media. What I meant to say is this; The quality of these knives looks really good, nice materials and construction. What gets me is that it is a blatant copy of a Marfione Custom, looks like the size of the Combat Troodon. I imagine it took some time for the original (Marfione) design to evolve. Calling it a clone does not mean it's not stealing. I never realized that Vespa does this with many popular models, I don't understand how this is legal. Is it? I would be interested in seeing what this company can create without "cloning."I welcome a true response to this.
