The problem...which Johnson discovered later, at night from inside, the glass looks like black walls. He installed a complex system for exterior night lighting to lessen the "black out" effect.

This house design is based in the Farnsworth house, designed by Mies van der Rohe

It would have been nice to see more of the interior space. Like the kitchen or something.

That will cost you $75. It's now a touring attraction in New Canaan, CT.

It’s a beautiful structure...but there are “living” issues. At night, from the inside, the walls of glass will appear black. There are also no curtains or shades, so you are up with the sun. It’s really something built for a weekend retreat rather than a full time home. This is why he built the sister home on the property....fully enclosed.

He actually had another non-glass house very close by which is where he slept and where the bathroom was.

You know what they say: Those who live in glass Houses, need a curtain from time to time.
    Beautiful Home.

What are the major pitfalls of glass houses? Heat retention, ventilation, privacy? I know nothing about design nor architecture but I've been looking at some sort of polytunnel house, and was wondering what the general challenges are.

Privacy isnt a big deal on 50 acres

    • @dw3403

birds killing themselves on the windows. Bugs crapping on the windows.
I know in my state you can only have so much glass because of heat loss. It changes with the r factors but a full glass house wouldn't fly in my state.

It would be interesting to design a house with no glass (just solid doors, shutters etc.) and see only the interior environment.

The curator does not mention that the Glass House does not have any screens for its doors and windows. In other words, flies and mosquitos LOVE this house. Idiocy.

    • @TheReverb1
      @TheReverb1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The curator only repeats architects "mantra". She never ever lived in a glass house; that as you say; those glass acts as a magnified glass with the Sun (I have big glass wall in my house and you need curtains at about 15cm from the glass to fight with the Sun heating the room)
Mosquitoes etc; so you do not have crossed ventilation; etc
Also; is not like she said; still the house is not integrated there. Could be easy integrated but still as most houses in a land; just a cube on the grass. No doubt that the non straight ground helps but...

@@TheReverb1 Stupid house. Stupid architect. Stupid curator.
So pleased that you agree with me. Why, why why is there all this stupid piety regarding this house? It is merely a monument to an inflated ego.

Glass house: So transparent it basically doesn't exist.
