Gora gora rang: Why do Indians love fair skin so much?

  • Indians have long been obsessed with white, fair skin. Endorsed by famous Bollywood celebrities, skin whitening creams are extremely popular among the Indian masses. Why are Indians crazy about fair skin? What can be done to counter colorism in the Indian society?

I used to be very dark skinned when I was little because I was very suntanned as I never used sunscreen, as I grew older and started taking care of my skin, the tan wore off. As I grew "fairer" I noticed how people genuinely started to treat me better. Same facial features, same hair, just the skin color was different. One relative told me "bachpan Mai kitni gandi dikhti thi I'm glad tum Gori ho gayi" It made me sick to my stomach. How can you look at a literal child and go "hmm ugly because they're dark skinned." I used to love to sing and perform as a child, but everytime I joined in for a competition I was always put in the back row for the given reason of "Sundar bacche front mai hone chahiye", Imagine comparing kids on the basis of conventional beauty.

I'm 16 and have been experiencing this since the day I was born. (My mom told me) I used a home remedy and really thought my skin would change i literally scratched my face with my nails when it didn't work out. I was 6.... Just a little girl. A little girl being called Kali chudail by a 25 year old grown up. I was bullied by every fuckin person around for my skin tone at different stages of my life. I still hear it and ik it'll continue forever. The thing is that im starting to accept it. But ik if I'll be offered to change my skin tone I'll do it . I hate myself for it but the world made me think like that. Please people I'm not asking you to change your type but please do not make them feel unworthy or unlovable. You don't like black it's okay keep it that way but please do not call her a "gobar jaisi dikhne wali Kali chudail" ever doesn't matter she's 6 or 20.

I remember one day my aunt asked why I was much darker (I was doing a lot of sports at the time) and lamented over the loss of my relatively fair skin as a child. I remember the look on my sister's face, when she heard that comment (she has darker skin than me even when I spent a lot of time in the sun). I felt absolutely heart-broken on the indirect affect that colourist, ignorant comment had on my sister. My aunt meant no harm and yet this mild incident tells us colourism is so ingrained into the Indian psyche that we don't even know we are affecting others. Dark is beautiful too. Others who think otherwise are brainwashed and should just shut up.

As someone who is dark skinned, I have faced a lot of racism in my 19 years of existence. I still clearly remember when my classmates and the staffs of my school calling me with some weird names when I was just 5 years old and had just started going to school. Yes just 5 years old! Could you imagine what a 5 years old kid would be going through after being a victim of racism at such a young age? Not just my classmates but my neighbours, my parents, my relatives, my teachers and the entire society around me made fun of my colour. Earlier I thought that the people around me are teasing me and insulting me because I thought I had some problem with my colour. But later on I realised that the problem is not with my colour but with their mindset. And I don't need to change my colour rather they need to change their mindset. Currently, I don't care if someone insults me or rejects me just because of my colour because I know the only thing that isn't right is their mindset. All thanks to education that made me a good human with a good and a strong mindset : )

Since the age of 5-6, i have been constantly ridiculed for my skintone. My friends never missed an opportunity to call me kaali. Because of these events my confidence was really low. I am still learning and trying to accept myself. It's 2022 but still people keep pointing out to me that, " areey ye to kaali hogyi." I have made peace with the fact that no amount of education or awareness can change these baffling idiots.

Super proud of my achievements while they have none. So to conclude your looks only cannot get you anywhere in life but your brains will definitely get you the success you deserve. I am a fair skinned girl, earlier in my school days i had a friend of mine who was dark - skinned. She was new in school and no one approached her coz of her complexion. My own friends were like - usse friendship ki to humse tod dena, initially i forcefully followed that but the things went on peak as the boys also started calling her 'kaali'. I fighted for her and made her my friend, from then onwards she was treated like a normal student.
Whenever i remember those scenes of her being discriminated, i feel so bad for her.
People need to understand that dark is not bad. It's pretty normal. Dark people can also be beautiful. Beauty doesn't means fair skin.

From that day no one dared to call me kaali even once. But they used to tease my brother too much by calling him kaala but he was calm and quiet just used to ignore. When he was about to get married , the brides' father after hearing about my brother was very interested in him, but when he saw , he was tanned type , he called off everything. All the relatives, taunted our parents but suddenly my brother came from nowhere with a smile in his face and with a book in gift wrap. Everyone started to taunt him and he said with a smile , that the book is given by his girlfriend Everyone was stunned by this. He came and told our mother , " Sorry mummy but do you have any problems in accepting a Nordish girl as your daughter in law? the whole council of relatives was stunned and at that day, they didn't have any contact with us.

Although there are many stories I faced in my childhood and now facing as a teen and it will be continue till my death but this story is something special..when I was in 9th grade I had huge crush on my class monitor it was so obvious that my whole classmates can read it on my face that I like him a lot but kisi ne kabhi mujhse pucha nhi everyone's like ok ..so u like him but he is not your type .. I always thought that his cold /rude behavior towards everyone was the reason but the truth was different. One day at school I decided to express him about my feelings but it gone wrong..that day I was selected in drama for school annual function and I was happy till one of my friend she was also doing in our drama part suddenly came and asked me that if I have crush on someone... I told her happily about him and she told him later .. And when I went back to classroom after practise there was something written on the board "Crow searching for diamond".. That's it.. I hope you guyz enjoyed my story.. 🙂 💔
This wasn't the end of the story
He later told me that how unlucky he is that he is liked by someone like me.. 🙃 .

we must look at these statistics carefully.
You're saying love marriage is worse than arranged marriages because they're more likely to fail. We have to consider that people who get arranged marriages are more likely to NOT divorce because of family pressure, shame, etc.
Furthermore, when you said most love marriages fail... then it's not actual love.
I'm not saying arranged marriage is better or love marriage is better. I'm talking about 'causation or correlation' in statistical reference.

I remember back when I was in school many boys in my class called me "kaali", they called me "kaali mata" , "blackboard" and whatever black they could think of. I remember I used to cry alone in school washroom cussing my skin colour, and I always hid my frustration and told my freinds I was ok and I didn't mind. But tbh it was devastating for me. It hit my confidence so hard that I stopped doing anything on stage or going out with freinds and anything that would involve interacting any "fair" people. I tried to avoid those boys in my class as much as I could, at a point when I used to hide in my home to skip school, and stopped interacting much with people. My mentality was destroyed and my confidence in myself was crushed, as a result I did so bad in my exams. I developed an inferiority complex and stopped showing myself to people because I thought I was too ugly for anyone to even see me. But now I'm matured and I realized I'm not ugly at all, I feel like I need to become powerful enough to tell these people that they need to stop with such a treatment towards young girls. Being a black girl in India, for me felt like a curse, but now I stopped giving any fuck about that and just focus on myself so that I can help spread awareness about this issue, to stop such discrimination.

I wad once offered the Role of most revered Bapuji in my kindergarten because my parents had shaved my forehead at that time during prior to mine and Gandhiji's birthday. (Mine is three days after his). I was too naive at that time to understand who is Gandhiji and what were his struggles in his life and our Satyagraha. So after a lot of crying and hesitation (during rehearsals i cried a lot for the sterotype) the teachers replaced me for some other kid.

    • @drd.n4695
      @drd.n4695 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

@FizZ: Ms. Das is more than an actor. She has literally been an ambassador bridging India and Pakistan via movies. She had raised her voice in the most legit way against our idiocy (obsession for a color). She has staged plays (witnessed her maiden attempt in person at Amdavad) and has spoken on a host of issues as a sorted individual. She hasn't rushed to make 100 movies: she's made two with heart and soul and both has made it to International Film Festivals. She is aging gracefully. Kajol's a zero. Chopra hasn't made inroads in Hollywood. Not quite yet. Yes, she's known fairly well in America but her body of work is relatively negligible.
A few other overarching pointers is feminism currently sells in Bollywood and that actors promote consumer feminism: the same Ranaut and Padukone won't promote feminism unless Nike and Adidas are in the equation! (Irfan) Khan is required to help the naive audience to come out of their obsession for stars. Go through this playlist if you have the time and interest: th-cam.com/play/PL9oxhJrV9mDaLwFHuFIEnevmss4gB6vKH.html and contribute your bit. I have no monetary interests: I am trying to educate myself where Bollywood truly stands. Best.

The real meaning of beauty is the personality of an individual. This is what we should accept rather than judging people based on their colour, looks etc. Fair skinned people came to India and thought we looked like mud and they treated us badly. This is the reality. Guess what in the Bible it is said that God created humans using clay (mud)

In my school (one of the top private schools in my city, I was extremely lucky to go there), during the Republic Day function, our class had 49 students. So, the teachers arranged them in rows of 7. Somehow, the first row had only fair skinned students, and the last row had dark skinned ones. The rest were in the middle. After the function, when I asked a senior about it, he was like "The guests want to see fair skinned students, so the teachers put the fair skinned ones in the position visible to the audience."
Seems like our teachers forgot to read Article 15 of the Indian Constitution, which is a shame considering the fact that there is a movie with the same name
