Im going to be darker. Ive never heard someone apply straight logic to skintone before. His confidence in his skintone was so lovely to see, that i wish everyone thought this way. Northern Europe is colder and doesn't get as much sun, so our skin is pale in order to allow our bodies to absorb more sunlight to create vitamin d. The question is given awkwardly and answered stupidly. Trust me, people want what they can't have or is rare but not too different that it is unrelatable. Everything comes to what people consider associated with wealth. Pale skinned person with slight tan is looked upon as having enough wealth to spend a bit of time in sun. Dark skinned people who are lighter appear to be successful by not needing to work in hot sun. People want their babies to have the best chance to be accepted. They didn't have any white guy with pink undertones, no mestizo looking Hispanic ( this Latin guy was almost as white as Mexican soap opera guy) the two black guys were not that much of a contrast. They should have not shown any face, height or body. Why not have a box with arm hole and have the guys show only arm.

This is an edited segment of a course, with 30 classes each semester. There aren't conclusions. We are trying to get students to talk about these issues outside of class. This is a conversation that hasn't been finished anywhere.
So many ignorant people in the comments saying “skin tone doesn’t matter”. Societally it does, it plays a huge factor in society and in life. A lot of social constructs we know are built around skin tone.
Here is one experiment... It really happened... 3 kids: 2 black and 1 white... Both kids treated each other the same way... Both were playing happy... Then they called each other to talk about race... That one group was privileged and etc ... Guess what happened ? Both started looking at each other with different eyes... The white girl started feelings pity of them... And when the white girl won these two kids said: "you just won because of the privilege.." And it seems that this doesn't only happen there... There's some father that said that their kids were feeling opressed and descriminated because of their skin color... Important note: their kids started acting this way after the race class... The issue is complex and we need to lo9k at ourselves to discover it... I believe it is called tribalism and we can see this happening a lot(tribalism isn't totally bad... It's the polarization that makes conflicts...) Here is one example: people that grew up in a black street have more chances to have a datk soin preference... The same can happen to "white"... The real reason why tribalism happen it's because you want people with common traits... I am gonna use politics as an example: Does a trump's supporter has more chances to socialize with biden's supporter ? Yes... It happens a lot... You look for traits that you can identify yourself or things tbat you are used to it... Here is another example: there's some story of kods that was bullied because they were white/black...important note: the white/black kid was bullied because the kid was a minority in that environment... We can see this happening a lot... There were a story of a guy who targeted 3 white(innocent it seems)... Some people were painting him as a hero... As we can see there's a double standard in each group... There's even groups that prefer to socialize with only white/black... This can prove my point... Another pont it's that most of the case it seems it isn't related to race...but traits! For example: you can see people for being more white/black than others .. It is an interesting observation... That's an important thing to consider... It is hard to let our hate go away... It can manipulate our emotions to seak revenge and not solution(a selfish revenge...because it only works to feed your hate and some times your prejudices...it doesn't bring any solution to the problem) So yeah...we have this as one of the reason why this happen... It is complex...we need to ignore our bias a little to check if this methods is really working or diving people or making it worse... I made a observation( i may be wrong) that it seems that most of people that says that they are ant racist has a lot of concern of races to the point that you need to identify your race to that person or that you must act or speak that way otherwise you aren't that race... Just an observation... I believe tbat the method is a failure... I live in brazil, I didn't have many bias or prejudices...now that i am in an english midia(most in the usa ) i have more prejudiceses and bias toward group... Be careful with your methods...pick a method that work for everyone bnot only one group... The first step to improve our methods is to acknowledge the problems in your methods...and of course: you can't do that if you don't discuss about your methods and different views... My opinion and my little experience... I hope it gave you some clues to improve your methods to solve the issue...

Very typical, not surprised by the video. But for me being dark skin, I didn’t have any issues with guys trying to date me or accept my complexion. I grew up in a pro dominantly white neighborhood but didn’t really stand out in a negative way.
J Butterfly I’m happy you haven’t been negatively affected by colorism, you’re one of the lucky ones. But that is not the same case for everyone. The way they made the Haitian kid feel, many dark skin, especially women, are made to feel like that on a regular basis. So I guess just please keep that in mind. It may not have been your experience but we should try not to gaslight others (not saying that’s what you’re doing🙂) and be an ally for darker people who do experience colorism.
Bianca oh no, I totally get it! I have siblings that I didn’t grow up with that went through the total opposite of me. I was raised in Maryland and they were in the south. Sometimes that makes a difference also. It actually happened to friends in the north as well. Its hurtful and I feel it through the pain in their eyes. Honestly, I believe I only slipped away from criticism because my hair was very long and wavy and kids/ teens were always touching it, like I was a circus freak or something...😕.

Watching the students try to avoid the discussion because of the uncomfortable topic is great. Honestly, it's a good reflection of how most people view the topic. It's there, but unspoken. Nobody wants to discuss it openly.

Yeah, it's definitely common for people in 3rd world countries to place the white american image on a pedestal but within the USA itself I believe over the last 20 years there has been a shift in the ideal image from white to a darker complexion. Lots of movies and shows have interracial relationships where when I was a kid growing up in the 90's you rarely if ever saw it. Just my observation and opinion.
@IBrainedMyDamage It's not a bad thing to see mixed races I just think it seems like a targeted movement by hollywood to promote it as "cool" or "beautiful mixed babies" or whatever other adjective they choose. It is what it is either way. Most people at the end of the day are governed by purely sexual preferences, so they'll chase whatever attracts them the most.
This was painful to watch 😢. I felt severe emotional anxiety for the darkest guy in the group. Not one culture chose his skin tone as the ideal shade. Very very sad. We must love ourselves no matter what skin we were born with.

I get your discomfort Ymir, but this experiment was done in an academic setting where the discussion could be explored in the open. The weirdness that you cited is experienced in society all the time. This exercise just tried to explore tastes and preferences. I'm sure the conversation continued in the lecture off camera.
Ymir, I think you need to also recognize that "your" discomfort with the topic is important. The topic of skin tone is no secret to any person of color. People of color have already learned this lesson in life at a young age. The most interesting part is the white American woman had the most difficult time identifying what skin tone was the most desirable for her culture. Everyone else was able to point out the skin tone with no problem. They may not have been able to articulate why that skin tone was desirable but they knew.
How it does open discussions if you and many others in the comment section are debating over it? You may not agree with his method but he could really trigger discussion.
@WADE Green Jr. There's nothing "interesting" about the white woman not being "able" to pick out her most desired skin tone. All the other race women were able to do so comfortably without heistation and with no contrition. The white woman could and would do the same, were it not for Marxist-authored, collectively-enforced anti-white peer pressuring that causes her awkward hesitation among a mixed race grouping. No white person in modern academia/work settings/media is allowed to express their preference for their own kind without being drummed out as a dangerous racist. And those responsible for perpetuating that dynamic, should be hanged in public and if history reemerges as it so reliably does throughout the centuries, they likely will be.
Its hard to watch because he DID prove his point. The moment each student struggled to answer why they chose that color it proved the professors point. If there was no other motive behind cultures passing down the idea of light skin preference then their responses would have been comfortable to say. You ask these same students "Whats your favorite color" and they would have no trouble answering and explaining. Their hesitation is because they know their answers stem from traditions they wouldnt be proud to share.
It's mostly uncomfortable because this is a transparent attempt at Maoist style struggle sessions to try to browbeat and social engineer young people out of whatever they may naturally find attractive. Skin colour, ethnics, height, facial/bone structures cannot be changed, but determines your value in society, dating and working life. People will lie about it, especially women. I think this shared cultural preference of lighter skin is a remnant of ancient classism. If you worked outside your skin was darker than if you were rich and stayed in doors. But interestingly, cultures in the western world like the US and the UK actually buck the long standing trend and prefer tan skin. That’s a historical shift.

Because at Penn State we have a very large white population (PWI) and a lot of students here haven't thought about race very much. And so they don't think about how people of color have social implications of being lighter skin. So we asked these students how they felt about it.

Yes because in most culture, darker skin equates to working class poor people. For example, workers who work in the fields out in the sun. And darker skin may look dirtier.
Well now the professor leading this experiment in fact said a prejudiced thing himself...when it was the turn of The Egyptian lady and the topic went to the darker skinned man, as she mentioned you don’t see a dark skin tone often in her community, he said ‘what about in the poor community? Do you see dark skin there?’ Why would it be more common in the poor community to see more darker toned people? Does he know that as fact? The assumption that darker skin tones are in poor communities is absurd in itself.
That's because in most Asian or Hispanics countries the darker you are means your poor and work outside...the lighter you are means success and you work inside.

The term, I believe is colorism . It refers to inner-racial discrimination. African descent people want somewhat darker skin, but not too dark. Hispanic people want to look Spanish, but not too Spanish, Jewish people, Japanese people, all the same. Colorism mentality considers the ideal skin tone (and facial features) to have a percentage of Caucasian ancestry mixed in. The preference of some cultures for this mixed race aesthetic has to do physical attractiveness - symmetry, vibrancy, youthfulness, radiance, fertileness - the things humans notice in each other, but also assimilation. It is easier for a lighter skinned, facially Caucasian-ized person to fit in. In the US, for example, a lighter skinned Mexican has better job opportunities than a darker skinned Mexican. Jewish actors who look less Jewish, have more casting opportunities. And, not surprising, the phenomena of colorism and assimilation are the direct results of centuries of worldwide caucasian colonization and the systemized racism that came with it. Everything from advertising to movies and television has taught the world to desire whiteness. (I was married to a sociologist).
The honest truth is that, just as much as people are not rushing to be extremely dark skinned, nobody is rushing to be extremely pale white either. Nobody. For instance, If you have a pale white person and a caramel colored black person, honestly, most of any race is going to choose the caramel colored skin as most attractive. Most people don't necessarily want either extreme, but something more moderate, in between. Tan skin, even deep tan skin is the great desire now... The brown skinned black guy and the mixed guy would be considered the most attractive color to have, based on what people realistically praise and are actively going for these days. What respondents were saying was not reflective of what actively happens in the way of attraction and wants, but what some people ASSUME in their minds, based on intentional, generalized media brainwashing. The way this psuedo experiment with this instructor was conducted is falty.
They should feel uncomfortable. This is an issue prevalent in society. This is a college class, not just any but a sociology class. This is the type of issues covered in sociology. A college class is suppose to get people to use cognitive discernment . It is supposed to initiate responses to get students to think, interpret, express and organize their thoughts and then to communicate that thought in an intelligent and intellectual manner. Have discussions and debates in attempts to understand other perspectives and work together to form a common solution or understanding. And you do not know that this is only step one in a series of classes.

Even in the media back in the day there was a thing called black face where they put big red lips on and black face to make fun of and degrade black people, they purposely wouldn't portray beautiful black women on tv but only put beautiful white women on tv and over time the influence of seeing for the majority only white people in good lighting and minorities in poor lighting and stereotype has had an effect on people culturally. So before you attack me on 'preference' not once did I say it was wrong to prefer light over dark I said it was deeper because this video clearly portrays a cultural epidemic. I'm not just blowing smoke I honestly love my skin tone I wouldn't trade being dark for being light, so I'm thankful that none of this affects me. I think Lighter skin tones are beautiful I also think tan and darker tones are beautiful! So chill.

All I'm saying is sometimes when all that's put in front of you by the media is a certain type of person in movies and tv so forth people can become brainwashed into thinking that's whats most desirable. This lesson that man conducted was very awkward with an abrupt ending that leaves you hanging but I'm certain that the main idea he attempted to convey surpassed a person's (sexual) preference and if you can't see that, then I can't convince you otherwise. Again, I am not attacking anyone's personal preferences. I personally don't discriminate.

Suggesting this says this is by complete design which it surely is not, it roots to the natural order and survival. In East Asian culture (where I'm from) pale skin is associated with wealth because you could afford to stay indoors. This has been the case since ancient times. Dark skin is associated with outdoors work (eg. farming) which was done by poor people so subconsciously dark skin is associated with poverty, even today. I don't know about other cultures but I've heard the same thing about Polynesians. I read that in Polynesian culture, apparently the most attractive women were fat and pale because they could afford to eat well and stay in the shade.

When I was younger, I was constantly berated and picked on for having dark skin. It didn't make sense, but my mom explained that in this world, the conquerors have pale skin, therefore, they have made their own image and likeliness ideal. After she explained it in that context, I understood. I observed that the so called most "desired" skin tone requires sun screen quite often, whereas my --so called ugly, hideous dark skin doesn't require any sun screen at all. I also observed that the so called "desired" skin tone ages rather quickly, while my so called hideous dark melanin keeps me looking much younger than my actual age. Additionally, I observed that women with light/pale skin pay a lot of money (via botox, plastic surgery, beauty products) to maintain a youthful look. It dawned on me that my mom was indeed correct. Having pale/light skin is not superior, the skin tone is simply preferred because the conquerors have the resources via their media and propaganda to ensure that their image remains the supreme image on the globe. As an aside, when you know better, you are supposed to do better. I don't feel sorry for the black men on the panel, because if given the option, they would more than likely choose to marry a woman with light/pale skin. In essence, they continue to create their own problem.

This activity/exercise makes me feel uncomfortable. The prof's heart is in the right place, but I don't think he's going about it the right way. If I was taking that class, I would use photos of people on a screen, and get students to VOLUTEER - not forced to refer to their "cultures" - how they think the people in the photos might be viewed around the world, and why they think that is the case.

Not everyone is comfortable enough to speak on this topic, so it is actually great that a white professor chose to have this conversation. The purpose is to force these students to have an uncomfortable conversation and truly think about why these beliefs exist. Maybe to even question their morality. It's good to draw attention to these topics.

This is a great discussion. If your uncomfortable you haven't excepted the world we were born into. Notice that it's hard for people to accept and talk about "Why" people prefer lighter skin tones? The reason why is because thats what we were taught and how we were programmed to think that lighter or fairer skin is more beautiful. Children don't see race until someone makes it known to them. Kids can see the difference in color but it means as much to them as the different colors in a crayon box (they're all crayons). I didn't realize I was different from my Mexican and white friends until my Mexican friend's little brother called me the N-word in third grade. It was then I realized we were different in a cultural way. I saw them as being my friends and that we were the same people. I lost much of my innocence with that experienced but I gained wisdom and grew to realize that as long as I am comfortable in my skin there is nothing to cry about and people like that have an identity crisis that they haven't resolved with themselves. My brown skin is the color of the earth, it is beautiful and keeps me better protected from the harmful rays of the sun. How could I hate something that was made to protect me? It's good that Hue-Mans come in a variety of colors and looks it what helped the human species dominate the planet. We need more of these discussions so more people can see how programmed we really are.

This was uncomfortable to watch. There were some good points made. The skin color of people in Sweden is due to environmental adaptation, however. Having pale skin reduces the chances of vitamin D deficiency during winter. That wasn’t discussed. However, it is sad to hear that there are some people with dark skin are bleaching their skin. We need to love ourselves no matter how dark or pale we are.

Why is bleaching considered sad and tanning light skin is not. When someone bleaches, they are only able to remove tan, they don't turn into albino white. Just the color they were as babies.

TanGo Within the U.S. it was a discrimination tactic used between slaves of a lighter and darker complexion. Though slave owners didn’t acknowledge their lighter offspring they were given more “privilege”, i.e. working inside the home vs. the field, than slaves of a darker complexion; even though everyone was still a slave. Outside the US the blame lies with European colonialism/imperialism; and States. In many countries, including the US, the lighter the better because it’s an “indication” of wealth, intelligence, civility, power, etc. Colorism is systematic oppression, 400+ years of conditioning, and uncorrected ignorance. In order to “combat” it people have to elevate their conscious level and acknowledge it’s an issue.

Edit2 2021: I was diagnosed with PCOS they missed my diagnosis for 7 years because I am thin.
I was always on healthy diet so that didn't help me but now I am on medication which decrease my acne and I feel better about my face

In an Asian Boss short, a man from India was asked if he used bleaching cream. He gave the best response ive ever heard. He said, The sun is out 200+ days out of the year in India. Im going to be darker. Ive never heard someone apply straight logic to skintone before. His confidence in his skintone was so lovely to see, that i wish everyone thought this way.

Northern Europe is colder and doesn't get as much sun, so our skin is pale in order to allow our bodies to absorb more sunlight to create vitamin d. Black people have darker skin to protect them from frying in the hot African sun.

The question is given awkwardly and answered stupidly. Trust me, people want what they can't have or is rare but not too different that it is unrelatable. Everything comes to what people consider associated with wealth. Pale skinned person with slight tan is looked upon as having enough wealth to spend a bit of time in sun. Dark skinned people who are lighter appear to be successful by not needing to work in hot sun. People want their babies to have the best chance to be accepted. They didn't have any white guy with pink undertones, no mestizo looking Hispanic ( this Latin guy was almost as white as Mexican soap opera guy) the two black guys were not that much of a contrast. They should have not shown any face, height or body. Why not have a box with arm hole and have the guys show only arm.

So many ignorant people in the comments saying “skin tone doesn’t matter”. Societally it does, it plays a huge factor in society and in life. A lot of social constructs we know are built around skin tone.
Here is one experiment... It really happened...
3 kids: 2 black and 1 white... Both kids treated each other the same way... Both were playing happy...
Then they called each other to talk about race... That one group was privileged and etc ... Guess what happened ? Both started looking at each other with different eyes... The white girl started feelings pity of them... And when the white girl won these two kids said: "you just won because of the privilege.."
And it seems that this doesn't only happen there... There's some father that said that their kids were feeling opressed and descriminated because of their skin color... Important note: their kids started acting this way after the race class...
The issue is complex and we need to lo9k at ourselves to discover it... I believe it is called tribalism and we can see this happening a lot(tribalism isn't totally bad... It's the polarization that makes conflicts...)
Here is one example: people that grew up in a black street have more chances to have a datk soin preference...
The same can happen to "white"... The real reason why tribalism happen it's because you want people with common traits... I am gonna use politics as an example:
Does a trump's supporter has more chances to socialize with biden's supporter ? Yes... It happens a lot... You look for traits that you can identify yourself or things tbat you are used to it...
Here is another example: there's some story of kods that was bullied because they were white/black...important note: the white/black kid was bullied because the kid was a minority in that environment... We can see this happening a lot... There were a story of a guy who targeted 3 white(innocent it seems)... Some people were painting him as a hero... As we can see there's a double standard in each group... There's even groups that prefer to socialize with only white/black... This can prove my point...
Another pont it's that most of the case it seems it isn't related to race...but traits! For example: you can see people for being more white/black than others .. It is an interesting observation...
That's an important thing to consider... It is hard to let our hate go away... It can manipulate our emotions to seak revenge and not solution(a selfish revenge...because it only works to feed your hate and some times your prejudices...it doesn't bring any solution to the problem)
So yeah...we have this as one of the reason why this happen... It is complex...we need to ignore our bias a little to check if this methods is really working or diving people or making it worse... I made a observation( i may be wrong) that it seems that most of people that says that they are ant racist has a lot of concern of races to the point that you need to identify your race to that person or that you must act or speak that way otherwise you aren't that race... Just an observation... I believe tbat the method is a failure... I live in brazil, I didn't have many bias or prejudices...now that i am in an english midia(most in the usa ) i have more prejudiceses and bias toward group... Be careful with your methods...pick a method that work for everyone bnot only one group... The first step to improve our methods is to acknowledge the problems in your methods...and of course: you can't do that if you don't discuss about your methods and different views...

Very typical, not surprised by the video. But for me being dark skin, I didn’t have any issues with guys trying to date me or accept my complexion. I grew up in a pro dominantly white neighborhood but didn’t really stand out in a negative way.
J Butterfly I’m happy you haven’t been negatively affected by colorism, you’re one of the lucky ones. But that is not the same case for everyone. The way they made the Haitian kid feel, many dark skin, especially women, are made to feel like that on a regular basis. So I guess just please keep that in mind. It may not have been your experience but we should try not to gaslight others (not saying that’s what you’re doing🙂) and be an ally for darker people who do experience colorism.
Bianca oh no, I totally get it! I have siblings that I didn’t grow up with that went through the total opposite of me. I was raised in Maryland and they were in the south. Sometimes that makes a difference also. It actually happened to friends in the north as well. Its hurtful and I feel it through the pain in their eyes. Honestly, I believe I only slipped away from criticism because my hair was very long and wavy and kids/ teens were always touching it, like I was a circus freak or something...😕.

I was alluding mostly to the USA. Yeah, it's definitely common for people in 3rd world countries to place the white american image on a pedestal but within the USA itself I believe over the last 20 years there has been a shift in the ideal image from white to a darker complexion. Lots of movies and shows have interracial relationships where when I was a kid growing up in the 90's you rarely if ever saw it. Just my observation and opinion.

It's not a bad thing to see mixed races I just think it seems like a targeted movement by hollywood to promote it as "cool" or "beautiful mixed babies" or whatever other adjective they choose. It is what it is either way. Most people at the end of the day are governed by purely sexual preferences, so they'll chase whatever attracts them the most.

I get your discomfort Ymir, but this experiment was done in an academic setting where the discussion could be explored in the open. The weirdness that you cited is experienced in society all the time. This exercise just tried to explore tastes and preferences. I'm sure the conversation continued in the lecture off camera.
Ymir, I think you need to also recognize that "your" discomfort with the topic is important. The topic of skin tone is no secret to any person of color. People of color have already learned this lesson in life at a young age. The most interesting part is the white American woman had the most difficult time identifying what skin tone was the most desirable for her culture. Everyone else was able to point out the skin tone with no problem. They may not have been able to articulate why that skin tone was desirable but they knew.
How it does open discussions if you and many others in the comment section are debating over it? You may not agree with his method but he could really trigger discussion.

If there was no other motive behind cultures passing down the idea of light skin preference then their responses would have been comfortable to say. You ask these same students "Whats your favorite color" and they would have no trouble answering and explaining. Their hesitation is because they know their answers stem from traditions they wouldnt be proud to share.

I think this shared cultural preference of lighter skin is a remnant of ancient classism. If you worked outside your skin was darker than if you were rich and stayed in doors. But interestingly, cultures in the western world like the US and the UK actually buck the long standing trend and prefer tan skin. That’s a historical shift.

Do you see dark skin there?’
Why would it be more common in the poor community to see more darker toned people? Does he know that as fact? The assumption that darker skin tones are in poor communities is absurd in itself.
That's because in most Asian or Hispanics countries the darker you are means your poor and work outside...the lighter you are means success and you work inside.

The term, I believe is colorism . It refers to inner-racial discrimination. African descent people want somewhat darker skin, but not too dark. Hispanic people want to look Spanish, but not too Spanish, Jewish people, Japanese people, all the same. Colorism mentality considers the ideal skin tone (and facial features) to have a percentage of Caucasian ancestry mixed in. The preference of some cultures for this mixed race aesthetic has to do physical attractiveness - symmetry, vibrancy, youthfulness, radiance, fertileness - the things humans notice in each other, but also assimilation. It is easier for a lighter skinned, facially Caucasian-ized person to fit in. In the US, for example, a lighter skinned Mexican has better job opportunities than a darker skinned Mexican. Jewish actors who look less Jewish, have more casting opportunities. And, not surprising, the phenomena of colorism and assimilation are the direct results of centuries of worldwide caucasian colonization and the systemized racism that came with it. Everything from advertising to movies and television has taught the world to desire whiteness. (I was married to a sociologist).
The honest truth is that, just as much as people are not rushing to be extremely dark skinned, nobody is rushing to be extremely pale white either. Nobody. For instance, If you have a pale white person and a caramel colored black person, honestly, most of any race is going to choose the caramel colored skin as most attractive. Most people don't necessarily want either extreme, but something more moderate, in between. Tan skin, even deep tan skin is the great desire now... The brown skinned black guy and the mixed guy would be considered the most attractive color to have, based on what people realistically praise and are actively going for these days. What respondents were saying was not reflective of what actively happens in the way of attraction and wants, but what some people ASSUME in their minds, based on intentional, generalized media brainwashing. The way this psuedo experiment with this instructor was conducted is falty.
They should feel uncomfortable. This is an issue prevalent in society. This is a college class, not just any but a sociology class. This is the type of issues covered in sociology. A college class is suppose to get people to use cognitive discernment . It is supposed to initiate responses to get students to think, interpret, express and organize their thoughts and then to communicate that thought in an intelligent and intellectual manner. Have discussions and debates in attempts to understand other perspectives and work together to form a common solution or understanding. And you do not know that this is only step one in a series of classes.

Even in the media back in the day there was a thing called black face where they put big red lips on and black face to make fun of and degrade black people, they purposely wouldn't portray beautiful black women on tv but only put beautiful white women on tv and over time the influence of seeing for the majority only white people in good lighting and minorities in poor lighting and stereotype has had an effect on people culturally. This lesson that man conducted was very awkward with an abrupt ending that leaves you hanging but I'm certain that the main idea he attempted to convey surpassed a person's (sexual) preference and if you can't see that, then I can't convince you otherwise. Again, I am not attacking anyone's personal preferences. I personally don't discriminate.

In East Asian culture (where I'm from) pale skin is associated with wealth because you could afford to stay indoors. This has been the case since ancient times. Dark skin is associated with outdoors work (eg. farming) which was done by poor people so subconsciously dark skin is associated with poverty, even today. I don't know about other cultures but I've heard the same thing about Polynesians. I read that in Polynesian culture, apparently the most attractive women were fat and pale because they could afford to eat well and stay in the shade.
Within south Asian culture they see pale skin as beautiful and dark skin as ugly due to colonialism

When I was younger, I was constantly berated and picked on for having dark skin. It didn't make sense, but my mom explained that in this world, the conquerors have pale skin, therefore, they have made their own image and likeliness ideal. After she explained it in that context, I understood.
I observed that the so called most "desired" skin tone requires sun screen quite often, whereas my --so called ugly, hideous dark skin doesn't require any sun screen at all. I also observed that the so called "desired" skin tone ages rather quickly, while my so called hideous dark melanin keeps me looking much younger than my actual age. Additionally, I observed that women with light/pale skin pay a lot of money (via botox, plastic surgery, beauty products) to maintain a youthful look. It dawned on me that my mom was indeed correct. Having pale/light skin is not superior, the skin tone is simply preferred because the conquerors have the resources via their media and propaganda to ensure that their image remains the supreme image on the globe.
As an aside, when you know better, you are supposed to do better. I don't feel sorry for the black men on the panel, because if given the option, they would more than likely choose to marry a woman with light/pale skin. In essence, they continue to create their own problem.
I'm so grateful I grew up with around many different races/cultures and that my parents told us we all bleed the same and we're all human!

This activity/exercise makes me feel uncomfortable. The prof's heart is in the right place, but I don't think he's going about it the right way.
If I was taking that class, I would use photos of people on a screen, and get students to VOLUTEER - not forced to refer to their "cultures" - how they think the people in the photos might be viewed around the world, and why they think that is the case.

Not everyone is comfortable enough to speak on this topic, so it is actually great that a white professor chose to have this conversation. The purpose is to force these students to have an uncomfortable conversation and truly think about why these beliefs exist. Maybe to even question their morality. It's good to draw attention to these topics.

This is a great discussion. If your uncomfortable you haven't excepted the world we were born into. Notice that it's hard for people to accept and talk about "Why" people prefer lighter skin tones? The reason why is because thats what we were taught and how we were programmed to think that lighter or fairer skin is more beautiful.
Children don't see race until someone makes it known to them. Kids can see the difference in color but it means as much to them as the different colors in a crayon box (they're all crayons). I didn't realize I was different from my Mexican and white friends until my Mexican friend's little brother called me the N-word in third grade. It was then I realized we were different in a cultural way. I saw them as being my friends and that we were the same people. I lost much of my innocence with that experienced but I gained wisdom and grew to realize that as long as I am comfortable in my skin there is nothing to cry about and people like that have an identity crisis that they haven't resolved with themselves.
My brown skin is the color of the earth, it is beautiful and keeps me better protected from the harmful rays of the sun. How could I hate something that was made to protect me?

This was uncomfortable to watch. There were some good points made. The skin color of people in Sweden is due to environmental adaptation, however. Having pale skin reduces the chances of vitamin D deficiency during winter. That wasn’t discussed. However, it is sad to hear that there are some people with dark skin are bleaching their skin. We need to love ourselves no matter how dark or pale we are.

Though slave owners didn’t acknowledge their lighter offspring they were given more “privilege”, i.e. working inside the home vs. the field, than slaves of a darker complexion; even though everyone was still a slave. In order to “combat” it people have to elevate their conscious level and acknowledge it’s an issue.
