  • Today we'll be venturing inside a scrapyard full of former Canadian National, Illinois Central, and BC Rail locomotives. They haven't been there very long, but they probably won't be there much longer. I don't like to disclose locations in order to protect them from thieves and vandals, so please don't ask.

All the locomotives in this video have been scrapped as of May 2022.

Unfortunately refurbish programs don't work with these older engines and with the advent of the new cheaper running eco-friendly engines this is the future.

Many of these locomotives have not operated for years. This 2428 for example, I saw a story about it, this model was designed exclusively for CN. They have already been taken out of service and these survived in this courtyard. This video is very good. Congratulations.

Worked on a lot of these engines. I'm so glad to see them being scrapped. They were noisy, always cold in the winter, nothing ever worked well and hot as hell during summer (no air conditioning).

Ok, really . When my Father retired CN, ran the 2407 and 2428 together from Mac yard to North bay. My father as Conductor, Last trip. My Brother Doug and I as Brakemen. Our other Brother Ken and Mom with Jack Little was the engineer. Dad's Van # 79570. I Operated the train into Mac yard as I was training as a locomotive engineer. I brought my Dad home. I have Brass HO scale model's of the units and van custom painted in honor of my Father.

They still use some of these series engines out in BC. As an engineer, I can say I didn’t look forward to having to drive these older units, underpowered for the massive trains they build now and the dynamic brakes on them were basically useless. It was a long trip when you had one of these as the leader. Biggest bonus though for a CN unit is they all had a microwave

The silence is creepy. Usually it would be noisy around these massive beasts. Such a sad sight but everything must eventually come to an end. I could spend all day here. Excellent work filming this video and thank you.

As a train enthusiast that has seen some of these exact engines around on the Canadian National railroad it's sad to see them just waiting for there time with the cutting torch I'm glad there was video taken inside and outside of these locomotives.

My dad was a conductor at CN and I remember getting to ride around the yard on his lap in one of these types of engines and in a caboose ( this was the 80’s so they still used them and safety rules were more lax) It’s a super cool memory of mine. They also had a phone on the engine and when he’d call us from the road he’d always blow the train whistle for us

  • @James_Knott

I used to be a technician for CN Telecommunications and back in the mid 70s frequently rode freights when I worked in Northern Ontario. I haven't seen the inside of a locomotive since then.

I remember when 4610 was brand new in North Vancouver yards, damn I'm old

Great Video. Kudos to your respectful manner of exploring. Take only pictures, leave only footprints. Great job!

the silence in comforting as well as saddening because there engines were so full of life and now they are dead and no longer alive.

Really hard to watch this! All CN’s C40-8W and C40-8M units beat to sh**! I have a fair share of most these units running on my channel from way back when! Great video thanks for posting.
