Many AC4400 series locomotives are currently being rebuilt, usually with new cabs/electrical systems, improved AC traction motors, and (I assume) upgrades to the prime movers & generators

The former CEFX AC4400CWs were recently acquired by Norfolk Southern now beginning to show the 3900 series, on top of that NS had recently rebuilt its 2 SD70M-2s into brand new SD70ICCs 1250 and 1251 not sure if they are released to service yet but the two had been sitting in Mayfield Kentucky

Quite a few have come back to life in the last several months still as CEFX in fresh blue paint. When delivered these units were leased to the CP & UP and I saw them with frequency in Milwaukee. Gradually as the big pandemic Freight downturn occured they were pulled from service and sent to storage so the vast majority have sent at least two to three years. The exception is the group that has been on long-term lease on the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. For the past few months the repainted units have been seen on Virtual railcam roses all over the BNSF system. We'll have to see what happens to these stragglers out in the bushes

Very nicely done. The first gen of AC locomotives have GTO inverters: SD70MAC & AC4400. Today's new build and rebuilt locomotives have IGBT inverters: SD70ACe and ES/ET series. The NS AC44C6CMs have the new inverters so the AC4400 they've acquired, unless they have been through the rebuild process like CSX, CP and UP, then electronically they are oddballs on the NS mechanical roster.

I live across the street from GE ( although the plant is currently being derailed by SCABS literally took the 100 th locomotive of Egyptian order and totaled it) anyway there is an order for 22 of those class 3 switchers to be built “down under” in Australia ) of course GE is now owned by Wabtec . Our Erie commercial railroad is located just east of main Plant on Water street just last year had there switcher rebuilt and repainted . I have lots of pictures and videos of it moving locomotive rebuilds around ,either taken in / out . During winter when leaves are down I can see the test loop sidings and some of main yard from my porch .

I haven't compared the numbers to see if this was the group ns bought but makes sense. These have been stored here for quite a while now with no sales previously pending because when ge sold their assets, cefx chose not to purchase software updates for the particular programs on these. This 1000 series group for cefx was built to cp standards. Those that have been leased out in recent years have received the needed updates through the leasee's expense from ge/wabtec. GE also did not willingly provide needed laptops or software for any 3rd party to perform work. So these have been forced into fra dead status while being stored. ns would have the tools needed to update them or obviously send them to ft worth.

Australia has an acute high powered locomotive shortage on the east coast, one would think those AC4400's could be refurbished and exported as "rebuilds" overseas? Then again, those AC4400's maybe too heavy for the east coast express freight corridor which is 134 tonnes (maximum loco weight), however, they could be used on bulk coal trains if they weigh a maximum 139 tonnes? As an aside, Progress Rail closed manufacture of EMD locomotives in Australia putting a lot of people at the Newcastle NSW factory out of work, they now make them "ready-to-run" exported complete out of Muncie in the USA and sent to Australia by sea. Great video, very informative, thank you.😉

It's probably worth noting, for those not in the know, that NS is purchasing these Leaser AC44's because they're having a power crisis. After a few years of sidelining hundreds of locomotives, for reasons varying from age to trying to shave costs, they've started to realize that more trains with less power just means _less power_ when all's said and done.

Norfolk Southern never sold their SD40-2's,nearly all of them are now SD40-3's just like some of the other older EMD units they own.
Also, they still have SD60M's but they were all rebuilt as SD60E's.
The SD70M-2 rebuilds were put into storage but they recently were removed and are back again.
Also, unless you mean leased units,Norfolk Southern never owned any of the SD75I's/M's.
The SD80MAC's were sold to PRLX because of EPA regulations and they were becoming expensive to keep in operation just like most older EMD units have become.
The SD9043MAC's that were acquired and rebuilt into SD70ACU's were sold to PRLX because most of them already had fracks or cracks in the frames. There's reasons why Union Pacific was selling units for dirt cheap like pennies.
Norfolk Southern is leaning towards Wabtec/GE like everyone else because their units are more technologically advanced, easily EPA compliant, better fuel efficiency, better cabs, stronger tractive effort, and aren't as costly.
