More CN C40-8 Locomotives Scrapped at Chicago Heights Processing!

- On April 23rd, 2022, I revisited Chicago Heights Processing in Chicago Heights, Illinois to see if anymore Canadian National Dash 8 series locomotives had been scrapped. I flew my drone over the facility and found more engines that had been cut up since my last visit. Two more C40-8Ms had met their fate, with one of them being completely cut in half horizontally! A few more ex-Santa Fe C40-8Ws were also scrapped. Soon enough, the whole facility will be filled to the brim with locomotive remnants!

Looks like Chicago Heights Processing has been busy since you were there earlier this month, Sam! It is a shame to see these engines in the scrap yard. Thank you for going back to Chicago Heights Processing to see what else was happening there!
A reflection of our lives, after years of good service.
Glad to see that I'm not the only one to look at this with a sad sensation. I know those are made of metal and are not suppose to be more, but for me each train is important. :(
they are locomotives nbot TRAINS a TRAINS HAS a MAKEUP OF MULITPLE CARS
Sad to see that CP rail SD40-2 in there. I have fond memories watching them working hard for over 40 years.
Hunter Harrison Poached many CP SD40s
@@detroitdieselseries5071how dare he! Well he is dead now so i guess he cant hurt any more SD40-2s
You hate to see it, it’s painful to look at a locomotive that was once active being reduced to scrap metal.
If anyone says they are not living things then they truly don't know
It hurts man, it actually really hurts seeing this =(
Nothing is eternal; everything have their begin and their end. Here in Mexico was sad to scrapped our C30-7 locomotives, but as I said: everything have their begin and their end.
@@thebluehero2219 I’m with you, seeing them growing up and always watching them roar by makes this extremely sad and painful.
The music multiplies the pain tenfold.
What a sight. Interesting to see 2199 there, as I actually have the bell to that unit after winning an eBay auction for it. Tested it and still works. Deep down, it's sad to see. Once hauling freight at 70MPH for the ATSF. Now retired and being scrapped. But that's just the cycle these things go through.
I used to work at Chicago Heights Processing; I really appreciated getting to see the yard again! Thank you!
We have one of those C40 "Four eyes" doing yard work here in Thunder Bay.
they are pieces of history, RIP the Dash-8s; you will never be forgotten. 😢
We’ll always have 4618 thankfully
Kinda sad, but at the same time it looks like a cool scene. Would be cool for a diorama or something
Wow! I drove past this place two weeks ago. My mom grew up in the "Heights ". Would love visiting my grandparents when I was younger because of all the trains.
Looks like they been busy! Very nice to see!
Man, this was tear-jerking!
That was hard to watch, these c40-8’s were one of my favourites with CN when they ran them on the mainline leading CN trains back in the mid 2000’s. Thanks for posting but at the same time the music didn’t help!
My Grandpa worked for Santa Fe for 40+ years. I love the music, who composed it? Yes, its sad to see them scraped but cost may be a factor in the restoration and the age of the units them selves.
This is very late but the song is Sappheiros - escape
Thanks a bunch, got the song from iTunes.
Seeing locomotives from rival Canadian railroads die together feels strangely poetic. Hell, maybe even nihilistic.
Yeah, I see that too.
The yard I work in once in a while I see a CP unit paired with a CP unit for switching. Usually it's a pair of CPR units, GP40s or AC644s. Or a pair of CNs.
Kill off Canadian National and bring back the Illinois Central.
Some of those CN units, atleast the ones that I've ran over the years have hot plates, coffee percolators. Microwaves and refrigerators in them, the seats also fold flat like a bed for the crews when they get stuck in a serious snow drift.😏👍
this is so sad, I miss the Dash-8s
As someone who loves equipment, this is kind of sad to watch, however I understand that they come to the end of their useful life and not economical feasible to overhaul and repair, good video thanks for posting,
this reminds me of our 2000 ford explorer for a ford it was actually great i miss that truck
For the record I think with all these dash 8s scrapped railroads like CN, NS, or CSX might regret what they have done. Don’t ask me why but I have a hunch they will.
So do I, once their tier 4 locomotives become write-offs from computer failures they'll start looking to rebuild everything down to their 4 axle switchers to avoid buying new junk.
@@EdmontonRails Exactly. They do seem to be jumping the gun by scrapping these. They should store them a little longer just to be on the safe side
@@brandonkoole655 facts like store them somewhere that doesn’t see a lot of traffic like Schiller park until they can be released one by one in case of a traffic increase!
I have a feeling cn regerated getting rid of the wc sd45/l39s
@@ZombieSlayer-dj3wb true they could’ve rebuilt them as sd45-3s!
The end of some great locomotives that ran countless miles on the tracks throughout North America. Sad to see but the video was good. Excellent camera work and video quality. Wish I could visit that place. Thanks Sam
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video, although it was a sad one!
@@SamLovesTrains yes your welcome
CN 2199 being one of them. I’m surprised that the cab in COMPLETELY Intact.
Look at all those old mainline freight diesels waiting to be scrapped
I feel bad for every locomotive in this video. I especially feel bad for the Ex ATSF Dash 8s, I can just picture them in their Warbonnet scheme. It would be great if 1 could be preserved:(
All Dash 8s are junk. Don't feel bad.
Personally I think dash 8s suck, but that’s my own opinion and I respect yours.
@@GEES44DCWHY!?
@@Noobixmhey now i think Dash 8s are great! Nowadays they are just scrap metal due to how old they are but i still think they could last awhile!
@@LongIslandRailfanner Yeah, but I guess I have EMD bias.
Another great video of this sad sight for us railfans.
Well saying goodbye to the dash 8
please do another flyover.
Looks like they might've set the cab on fire on the 2408 when they were cutting her up. Sad to see the unique Draper Taper C40-8M's getting the torch. I hope at least IRM is able to get one, or even one or two Canadian museums, before they're all gone. GE didn't make very many cowl units overall, and not a single one of the earlier granddaddy cowls, the U30CG's or the P30CH's were saved. I hope that mistake isn't repeated again.
Isn't it mildly ironic how there are very few modern GE locomotives preserved or operating anywhere in the US other than the Tonners? Places like Brazil and India have more respect for their historic U-Boats, Dash 7s, and Dash 8s than we do here in the U.S, Canada, and Mexico!
@@Cnw8701 Exactly. It's a shame that more love can't be mustered in the right places at the right time to save at least a few of the really unique ones.
Hi I'm in the process of making a TH-cam Video on the dash 8's. May I please use some of this footage?
@@alcobufff Yes, just make sure to leave credit somewhere on the video or in the description.
love these vids. keep em coming
I watched a video of 2422 in all its splendor and glory and it's so sad to see it now reduced to metal rubble . It is like life itself , one day up and then down waiting for death.
Just last month i shot all of those before they got scrapped
I felt sad because I serviced and operated these locomotives. Now I know where they went and what happened to them.
When locos get scrapped, they salvage all usable parts and the rest goes to the metal recyclers.
Well judging by the number of Prime movers discarded on the ground and truck axle frames I would have to respectfully disagree with your comment.
@@8HumblePie I said all usable parts. Dash 8 prime movers are not usable parts. No one wants or needs them. When an sd40-2 gets scrapped, anything worth keeping is salvaged. I watched a video where a scrapper goes through the whole process of scrapping an sd40-2. Quite informative.
@@8HumblePie I used to scrap/part out locomotives with a company called Bonnet Locomotive Salvage. We helped cut up 4 locomotives here at Chicago Heights Processing in 2009. We never saved the truck frames on any locomotives we ever scrapped. As far as the prime movers, GE FDL cast iron crank cases cannot be rebuilt forever like a fabricated steel EMD block can. With the glut of recently retired Dash-8s, parts demand is probably low, meaning the scrap yards won't bother stripping prime movers for parts if they aren't worth the time.
@@trainguy7261 Not true, 7FDL16 engines are used in Dash-9 and AC4400 locomotives and there are thousands of them in service. Then there is the export market. I'm looking for a good RTO engine myself for a B40.
It all depends on who you know. My friends are currently trying to buy an engine from this place right now.
Seeing those loco’s cabs is just the equivalent to seeing a persons head just sitting there next to a pile of body parts
Great video. My sign shop is about 10 minutes away. I've seen the loco's in the yard at 26th and East End in So, Chicago Heights. Always wondered what was back there.
That's heartbreaking beautiful locomotive's are being scrapped like that those should have been preserved for railroad museum's
Railroad museums all over have a hard enough time maintaining what they have - and much of their track would likely not support something as heavy as a C40-8.
thanks for the great video i would love to own a turbo and dymamic brake fan to my collection kinda sad to see these scrapped thanks for sharing
Great video, I love the drone footage! But the music didn't work for me. I had to turn my audio off, sorry.
Very sad scene to see these work horses tore up like that.
2408 was in service less than two years before this video was made.
Awesome video but 🥺 it's sad to see reality
Why would you ever think about doing that? Dash 8's are adorable for service.
😭😭😭😭😭 NOOOOOOO!!!!! I still haven’t seen one leading and I will almost never have a chance 😢😢😢😢
i followed your channel and gave it some love.
Wow, they're slaughtering these things like no tomorrow. Some of these very units I saw being towed down on a few A446s during the night.
Real shame, I've got a photo of 2199 leading some years ago
February 27th 2021 I caught her leading.
Why do I have the feeling that absolutely no santa fe dash-8's will be sent to museums...
I have two of them. I have no plans of scraping them
Because they're junk and worthless.
I worked there before it got contracted out it was a good experience
Anything mechanical will last as long as you want it to assuming that it is maintained and not rusted out. I have never understood why some RR's scrap 15 year old locomotives while other ones are kept for 50 years look at how long SD9's lasted on BNSF
Very gosh darn sad! I see three more for the chopping!
Can I just interject a little logic in the comment section? First off, these locomotives are all around 30yrs old, and CN just bought 75 former Citirail CREX ES44ACs. A locomotive will only last around 10-15yrs before it essentially needs completely overhauled/rebuilt. CN bought these locomotives 10yrs ago. They are probably due for a major overhaul and being taken out of service as they have serious failures, like prime mover, alternator, etc. When CN bought the old CNW C40-8s from UP, they got them at scrap value because they were worn out and nobody else wanted them. All of the Class 1 railroads have embraced the Precision Scheduled Railroad mantra, which essentially equals monster trains pulled by as few locomotives as possible. DC locomotives, like these Dash-8s, have no future in a world like that because the railroads want to go 100% AC power on their main line trains. That way you can run a massive, under-powered land barge and not worry about burning up DC traction motors. There has been a huge glut of old locomotives getting dumped by the Class One railroads in the past few years, way more than the used locomotive market can handle. Many short lines have no interest in acquiring used GEs when they have all the SD40-2s they want. Hypothetically, these Dash-8s could be rebuilt and last another 30yrs, but if nobody wants them, they are going to go to scrap. I personally helped scrap/part out 4 CN locomotives here at Chicago Heights Processing back in 2009, 3 SD40-2Ws and a SD50F, when I worked for Bonnett Locomotive Salvage. I've also worked for Railserve and had the opportunity to operate some BNSF Dash-8s.
Thanks for the insight, as sad as it is to see them go (I especially loved the ex CNW standard cab dash 8s you mentioned) it is interesting to hear that they were quite buggered when CN bought them in the first place.
The US also has a disposable culture. Throw out stuff that works to get something new. Unfortunately American exceptionalism does exist
@@detroitdieselseries5071 This has nothing to do with America. France is scrapping high speed trainsets that have a fraction of the age these locomotives have.
The countries that still operate worn out rolling stock do so not because of choice but of necessity - they simply can't afford newer/more reliable/more efficient equipment.
@@spredelectric would you consider Poland or Hungary to be a third world country then
Great video in a kind of disturbing way.
Sad to watch this video. Yet, this is part of what does happen to old worn out things. Nothing lasts forever. I love this music very much. It just fits with this video. What is name of this song ?? I lived in Chicago. Didn't realize that this place exists.
So what are the differences between older and newer locomotives?
CN just got those Dash 8' a few years ago and rebuilt them. So sad, though for sure they'd see many more years
I will miss you....trains😢😢😢
The EPA is going to have a fun time cleaning up that dump. Why can't they break them inside and out of the elements to better contain all of that contamination?
Sad to see them go😢
Unfortunately the last remaining union Pacific SD-90MACs are heading here
Unfortunately CP Rail would need those
Nice video. Scrap yards are a little sad.
Good bye old friend😥😭
Nice video!!!
“They can’t hurt you anymore..”
Tell us that's not a future Superfund cleanup site. How do they make money scrapping locomotives on a small scale like that? Years ago they did the same thing in Tacoma Washington on the tideflats (the industrial area) but they had dozens lined up ready to scrap and they disappeared pretty quickly. It was a busy place! You'd think they'd have a shredder of some kind setup as they don't do anything without machines. So we know what goes in there but other then recycled metal what do they do and what exactly goes out of there?
Have you ever considered buying a locomotive from there?
Could that orange loco have been EJ&E prior?
I’m glad that 2133 was bought by a leasing company as for 2178 goodbye and for Sd40-2 I don’t know if that’s getting scrapped or if it’s being sold
I was confused what the SD40-2 was there for, but it may have been scrapped.
The SD40-2 was there to be scrapped it was basically just a shell it was parted out years ago…. I prepped to ship it to the scrapper
@@davepritts494didn’t the SD40 came from Motive power? CP Rail or CPKC used to have many SD40-2s but after EHH came in. Many were retired
i wonder what some of the workers at the scrap yards who like trains think about this?
I think all four of my truck tires went flat by just looking at those roadways..
There are still F units, GP9's and SD40-2's still running. Why scrap the Dash 8's?
There's no demand for older 4,000 hp locomotives.
Out of the thousands of F- units manufactured, how many survive today?
Not many.
GP9s are getting harder to find.
Many SD40-2s have been scrapped.
They weigh over 200 tons. Not a lot of short lines can handle them.
@@spredelectric there is still a sizable chunk of GP9s and SD40-2s still in service considering how reliable they are. also don't be surprised if Foamers start picking fights with you in the comments
I wish the Dash 8's were back..
I don’t. I hated how rare they were and how hard they were to see, they were a pain to crews so they won’t miss any of those garbage ge junk. Emd is better anyway.
My input: yeah it's a little sad to see the the cowl units get scrapped just because they're so unique locos. I think it's funny how CN still has operating SD40-2Ws, which are older than these GE's but getting scrapped first. The dash 8's, well there's just about zero uniqueness quality to them, plus the rail crews didn't seem to like them. Nor the cowl units for that matter.
The sd40-2ws are pretty much universal locos. Sd40-2s are still going strong
Gmd1s are the real goat
@@ZombieSlayer-dj3wb yea GMD-1s are no longer around. CN retired the last one in 2020 or 2021 I think
It’s a pain too look at these trains. They mean a piece of not only JUST my heart, but to others who know this feeling. These trains to me felt like they were living reality. And it’s saddening to see these old fellers in the scrapyard. These units were my favorite and it’s hard to let them go.
CSX’s/CN’s Dash 8’s
2013-2022
(Most of them at least.)
_Not the widecabs!_
Very sad to see retired CN Dash 8 40-CM's and CP Rail SD40-2's being sliced and diced. Especially since not one GE C40-8M Cowl has been earmarked for preservation (as of yet)
Good. They're all junk. Good riddance.
RIP Decapitated locomotives 😞
The thumbnail is a horror movie picture for trains
Rest in peace 😢
Love it!
I hope 2178 and 2133 are not being scrapped they look like new
Not sure about 2133 but I believe 2178 was.
@@SamLovesTrains darn. Hopefully 2133 wasn't cut up
CN should've spared some of them from the torch, ESPECIALLY the rare GE cowls
Lol, no.
Does anyone know why they leave the cab sections intact?
I remember when the Dash 8-40CMs were brand new and when those Dash 8-40CWs were new and in the incomparable Santa Fe Warbonnet scheme! All Santa Fe and not the bastardized BNSF on the nose and sides! Off course any scheme at all would be a vast improvement over the disgusting Halloween paint scheme and swoosh logo, which they paid an ad agency 43 million dollars for! Blame Robert Krebs for eliminating the Warbonnet and Santa Fe name, blame Matt Rose for the hideous swoosh logo!
Nice video
Strange that diesels are being scrapped and yet some 100-year old steam engines are still running. They don't build 'em like they used to, I guess?
Huh, what? There are ZERO 100 year-old steam locomotives operating outside of museums, and the vast majority of steam locomotives were scrapped more than 60 years ago.
The Dash 8s in this video are 30+ years old - an entirely respectable service life.
Will any be put in museums?
Hopefully...
Does anyone know what music was used in this video?
I wish I was rich asf so I can buy one of these scraped engines and restore it

I really enjoyed this video. Those GEs were horrible to work on. Rough rides. Took forever to load. I hated them and seeing those pieces of junk scrapped made my day. And if you think Dash 8s were horrible to work on, the Dash 7s were worse! I only had the misfortune of working on one U series and it was by far the worst thing I was ever in. Reading some of the comments is baffling. Why would any company "donate" a locomotive? They are out to make money, not make donations. You want the hunk of junk, you can buy it like anyone else. Anyway, keep these videos on scrapping locomotives coming!
As a train buff, I'd love to have some dash gauges and the headlights for my office! Ugh! Would pay big bucks. Send me a message if available.
0:44 no not the C40-8M :(
If I was the CEO of CN I wouldn’t scrap these engines,to save money I’ll put them in a museum
That’s a lot of locomotives you’d have to find museums for
