The 2nd best Christmas song ever. Now onto Paul Kelly - 'How to make Gravy' - like Tim a different point of view of Christmas but with love and family at the heart of it. Though you need to wait until the 21st of December - official Gravy Day (that is how much this song is loved down here they named a day after it.) Enjoy - Merry Christmas
I sincerely hope you get your mug! Thx for this one :D I had a mate from Saskatchewan staying one year with us in Australia - we sat him in the pool and handed him the cordless phone to call his Mum to say "Merry Christmas" and let her know he was sitting under the sun in a swimming pool for Christmas. We heard her scream, "NO WAY!!" :D
Great stuff. I'm a big Tim M. fan and love this song so I clicked for the reaction... stayed for Tee! Shout out to the Rush fans watching! Thanks for the enjoyment, guys, cheers from east coast Canada.

Probably my favourite song from Minchin though this particular recording is not the best. Being of similar mind about Christmas and from sunny Perth I can definitely relate to the lyrics.
You can hear the emotion in his voice in that version and his struggle to finish the song without breaking down. And while it sounds weird to say that it's my favourite version of him singing the song, I just connect with it on a level that I haven't done before with this particular song.
I've been a little hot and cold with Tim Minchin ever since I first heard of the guy. He's been good on some material, and a little sappy with others. He does describe an Australian Christmas, I guess. I don't mind a bit of bubbly white on the side with a Christmas turkey. I'm starting to see the trend you described with my in-laws. My husband's parents are still alive, but there hasn't been much of a turn up for his family's Christmas, and there'll probably be no family Christmas after they go. Gillian and I have always had a bond as sisters, so we'll be having family Christmases together for the rest of our lives, and our own kids are showing signs of family loyalty. But I have seen the demise of Christmas gatherings in my husband's family. Speaking of Christmas in summer, Australian Crawl recorded some song about Christmas.. ''Santa Clause Is In Town'' or something? I just remember the band looking hung-over and not in the mood to mime on Countdown. Be a funny clip if you find it. Hoodoo Gurus also had a 2 and a half instrumental of ''Little Dummer Boy'' with a typically Australian outdoors video. Should be interesting. Christmas cheers, Hayley 🎄
Since the death of my grandad, our family just grew apart. I used to really enjoy the Christmas get togethers and everyone meeting on a Saturday at my grandparent's home. Our own kids still come to visit so maybe the circle is renewed

My own children, now young adults, have already experienced the best of that side of the family, so they're taking it as it comes. The contrast between my own family's Christmas, and Christmas with my in-laws is quite noticeable. Gillian's husband has quite a strong family unit, and the three of us (me, Gillian and our older brother) also have that unity. Luck for us, our kids have inherited our sense of family orientation. Seems to be a worldwide push to minimise Xmas which I am not supportive of. Not a big fan of this song either TBH, You dont have to be religious to enjoy Xmas and appreciate your family getting together. I am grateful my family still get together on Xmas day at one of my sisters houses. They take it in turns hosting the day since Mum passed back in 2016, we lost Dad back in 2013 and my older bother in 2019. You need to cherish your family while they are still around and Xmas holidays are the perfect time to do that.
You might have misunderstood the message of the song? It's totally about not needing to be religious in order to enjoy Christmas with your family. Hope you have a lovely time with yours this year :)
its our societal wokeness that is causing this! No one is allowed to celebrate anything anymore in case it offends someone! We can't have a Christmas party for our workplace in Australia as not everyone celebrates Christmas! So because not everyone does no one is allowed to...but at least the person who didn't celebrate Christmas felt great and the 140 others felt, well who cares as the one felt great and included.

I have lived in islamic countries away from my family at Xmas a couple of times and I can certainly relate to this song and the sentiment behind it. If you have never been a long way from home at that time of the year or you are not a family person I guess it probably wont mean much to you..Paul Kellys How To Make Gravy probably wont mean much either because that is also about being isolated from your family at xmas.
