    Amazing that the grease cut thru the conformal coating of the PCB but the corrosion on the right side kinda confirms your diagnosis about there being some kind of agent in the air...didn't know that grease was acidic...learn something new every day, thanks Chris!

    • @crabmansteve6844

      Yeah, grease is super acidic, it's a bunch of fatty acids.

      I can’t tell for sure in the video, but a good conformal coating I really lacking on some of the equipment I see.

    • @rustblade5021
      @rustblade5021 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i'm not sure it did, what's more likely is the coating (or the way it applied) was faulty. an acid powerful enough to eat through the conformal would have destroyed the pcb.

    • @mrmeval
      @mrmeval 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@89dhvac All I could see of the solder was coated on the new board. It's very thick and is most likely urethane. I can't fault Heatcraft on that. The switches have an internal bellows seal as I've used them and it's shown on the datasheet. It has sealed relays and I expect that LED assembly is made to specification as it is not a standard part. That gunk got through a tough coating and that's really nasty stuff. Both urethane and the silicone types are really good at preventing moisture and many solvents from causing damage. Yet even with that my company does have sulfur issues with our product around oil wells but nothing survives that for long. There are special panels for that. In that use, it's mostly to help mitigate brief panel openings. There are specialty designs that take everything but the cost of those goes up fast. There are devices in oil wells that will sneer at it. They're somewhat expensive.

      @@rustblade5021 faulty conformal coating seems like a manufacturer defect. It doesn't feel like the first manufacturing defect I've seen on this channel. 😆

    bet the display is a different color so the manufacturer can tell if it's an originally shipped board new with install. I notice a lot of new parts change colors for that reason.

    • @PINKBOY1006
      @PINKBOY1006 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It could very well be another reason. They might not have been able to get the correct 7 segment display with the component shortage that is been going on so they just used a different color substitute.

    • @SkigBiggler
      @SkigBiggler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s more likely just a substitute. It’s difficult to reliably source parts at the moment, so often times components are swapped with whatever is available. Those seven segment displays are made by numerous manufacturers, so it’s pretty easy to swap out. Unusual colouring though.

    Thank you for these videos! I am sure it's not the intention but these videos and Survival's videos have taught me a lot over the years. I watch for entertainment as I am not in the HVAC industry (RF Engineer). A few nights ago my home AC unit stopped cooling. It's south Alabama and it's hot and moist even at night. Big picture diagnosis right I can do this. I went through the unit thoroughly and found a compressor motor starter bad. Called in a favor from a friend he threw a capacitor in his mailbox and I got my unit cooling again. I never realized how much I have learned from these videos you actually saved me big money and a hot night. Thank you!

      I think the board was seeing one of the buttons continually being pushed down. Easy peasy for someone electrical to fix with a soldering iron. I guess HVAC guys like to work at component level and not sub-component/board level. 😀 It looks like some of the pull up/pull down resistors and maybe some of the caps were also being shorted by corrosion on the left side of the board. Also, trivial to replace by someone with a hot air gun and the know-how.

      @@fitybux4664 Other than the $100.00 USD per hour labor cost the customer is being billed, the main problem with component level repairs is, while you are tracing circuits and replacing tiny pieces you usually have $5,000 to $100,000 dollars worth of the customers product warming up or thawing out. Fun Fact about ice cream: Each one of those tubs of ice cream is at least 40% air. Frozen ice cream is aerated, when it melts and re-freezes it becomes a very hard block in a partially-filled container.
    I used to work at a gas station where our ice cream freezers broke down once a month. (One night it was reading 84°F! It wasn't time to do temp checks but I felt the heat radiating from the doors when I walked by and thought something wasn't quite right - too warm to be the door defrosters. 2nd Shift fudged numbers on the temp sheet out of laziness...) Every time that freezer went down it took $14K worth of product with it, except for the time it failed again while we were waiting for the shipment of product we had just thrown out, so that one time it failed while empty.
    Mi vida loca!

    • @thematthewlondon
      @thematthewlondon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      another fun fact, that aeration is called "overrun".. so 50% overrun means the initial mix (let's say 1 gallon) produces 1 1/2 gallons of ice cream

      Fun fac ice cream without the air is basically fat milk and a bit of sugar. One frosen it as about the consistency of water ice and taste quite bad.
      But iv seen some less scrupulous stores still try to pass that inventory....
      Not to mention all the health hazards when eating a refrozen product.

    • @fitybux4664
      @fitybux4664 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have ice cream too close to the evaporator coil / defrost heater, won't this just melt the ice cream several times per day? 😀 It needs to be in the coldest part of the freezer, but not near the defrost heater. (Maybe in line with the evaporator fans on the opposite side of the room.)

    4:58 The yellow coating may have a function such as concealing the edges of the display block when behind a red filter, possibly as an anti-glare measure too. The whitish base of the other display type might be visible in direct bright light and render a lesser contrast. Likely as this board has no filter it was just manufactured with the available component

    The early Beacon systems installed at McD's didn't hold memory if power was interrupted. What a PIA it was to reprogram the controller every time. I ended up installing a balanced port txv and an old school manual time clock. That was 15 years ago and that McDs still has that system running with my mods. Was a lot cheaper than updating the new Beacon controller at the time.

      I'd guess that cleaning/replacing everything that looks charred on the board (SMD resistors/caps on the left and switches on the right), and reapplying conformal coating, would cause the board to work correctly again. You probably wouldn't have an HVAC tech using it though, because it isn't under any kind of warranty at that point. (Even though the board he did use looks like it had a changed LED part. 😆)

My understanding is they had a bunch of guys at the California stores that wanted to get paid for every hour they were on call at there normal rate, plus a bunch of other things. Yes, grease is acidic. Also there are the other kitchen aerosols that contain salts that get airborne and this also attribute to the corrosion on metal surfaces. In my case as a consumer electronics repairman, I see a lot of these from the regular house kitchens into the entertainment area without adequate hood fans. Some corrosion, but not as much as in a humid area. The problem here that cockroaches and other vermin love the collection of grease, salts and lint coating the warm components. Tasty.

      The coatings on these are mostly to prevent shorts caused by condensation, the corrosion resistance I believe is an extra, but not the main purpose.

      @@SkigBiggler same thing in avionics. I've seen prototypes go haywire in thermal because we typically don't coat them.

    The display is orange because there is a chip shortage and they do what they need to make new boards.

    That board needs a conformal coating to protecting it

    That 7 segment display looks like it’s just missing the polarizing filter. Shouldn’t be a big issue as long as nothing goes in and damages the exposed substrate

      This happens a lot now with component shortages, manufactures will have to replace some parts with similar equivalents.

    So, considering the fact leaving doors open causes serious problems for walk-in coolers and freezers, why aren't there alarms which sound whenever a door is left open longer than some pre-determined length of time? It would be a very simple and inexpensive way to increase reliability and performance for most any walk-in installation.

    Not a fan of the heatcraft boards. Everything is moving towards the energy-efficient stuff, but it is not friendly in the event of an after hours call or if a supplier doesn't have what's needed. The more simple a system is the cheaper it is to maintain and service despite it not being as efficient.

    Extreme over clockers, like #Splave, use dielectric grease or liquid electrical tape, to stop LN2/Air mixing and condensing on the IC's computer on motherboards and GPU PCBs.
    Could yo u do something like that, on these PCBs, to prevent future corrosion?

    Board that new shouldn't fail. Grease in the air. Humidity. Whatever. It shouldn't fail. It's a commercial environment so should be built for it. I wouldn't trust Intelligen based on this video.
