Reno remains the most underrated flatpicking pioneer, largely because of his banjo prowess, but his guitar picking was at the same level in versatility and innovation. Don gave lessons and worked with a young Hank Garland on the radio in Spartanburg doing twin electrics back in the late forties. He was the first bluegrass guitarist to pick fiddle tunes on the flattop, and got about as close to the melody of the fiddle as you could get. Clarance White was heavily influenced by Reno's picking, as was Norman Blake, Bill Napier, and even Watson who cited him as the one who inspired him to start playing fiddle instrumentals on the guitar.

This is the best thing I have ever heard. I wish they made an album together.

It’s so fascinating to hear Doc and Don Reno talk about how to play different licks. It’s like they just were jamming, but on stage!

Thank you for saving this piece of musical treasure. It was on the website of a man who shares tons of bluegrass music but the Watson family asked him to remove it. There's a neat story behind the recording, too: he went there to listen to music and happened to walk up near the stage and heard them playing behind it, so he stuck the microphone of his tape recorder through the crack. That's why Doc makes comments about needing fiddles or how certain licks mess with him. The man who recorded it believes he was the only person to have recorded it.

Wonderful! Don Reno is rarely heard playing guitar, let alone singing and playing guitar. It's really interesting to hear the two styles of flat picking together.

Wonderful to hear Doc in his normal speaking voice, not the "stage' inflected southern drawl, thanks for posting this is great find !
