      In Australia, not sure which is the latest software version. Great to have all these settings to customize, pity the system does not remember them after leaving the vehicle. Surely that would not be a difficult thing to fix. Very annoying to keep resetting your preferences each time you enter the vehicle.

      My favourite new feature is the new drop down menu which can be accessed through CarPlay and allows you to switch off the car quickly.

    • @siasek
      @siasek  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I know this was an issue in older software versions, but I think some people have reported it's been fixed in the newer one. The differing software versions really make things confusing, basically even the people who are heavily involved in the forums can't get it right. This will definitely have to change in the future. It should be easy to know what software version you have, what you're updating to and what changes/improvements it brings (and ideally it would be the same across the board).

      @@siasek nope: before the update, you had to navigate to the Driving screen and then to the Safety screen and then select Power off. Now you can simply pull down the menu and tap the power off button. You can then press the brake pedal to turn the car back on.

    It's good to see the SE getting the love it deserves and it's why as a Trophy/Luxury owner, I'm waiting for R58 (believe that's the next infotainment version) + all relevant module updates and will demand the dealer to get it updated, irrespective of it taking 1-2 days, as I will soon have to do my 1 year service. As a daily driver, the pre-flight checks that I have to do have now embedded in my head but every time I drive my older citigo EV, just jumping in and being able to drive, change regen mode and turning off LKA with buttons/switches rather than the touchscreen makes me happy beyond explanation. There are these tech features that I consider micro-aggressions and it's hard to see how annoying their long term effect is until you try something else.
    This video just shows that there might yet be hope that MG can understand that if they want to dominate the market, SW and behavioral functions are intrinsic to a well rounded EV. You know, if voice commands could actually enable a 'profile' it would literally fix all my issues. I did suggest this many times but maybe it needs a wider audience push...
    Thanks for keeping up with this topic, always wonderful and informative videos from you!

    • @siasek
      @siasek  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Do you mean if you could give a voice command to switch to a personalized driver profile, where you would, for example, have LKA turned off already and other settings like that saved? Because that does sound like a good solution.. I'll be preparing a video about the Trophy update also, once it's available. I could mention your idea in my video perhaps to get a little more exposure and maybe some feedback from others? 🤷
      The micro-aggressions is a perfect way to describe it. It's those little annoyances and they really do add up over time... I'm pretty sure I read a study about this years back on how these things cause this small level of chronic stress. I can't imagine having to think about having to turn off the LKA everytime before driving off.. as annoying as my Citroen can be, this is one of the things that actually works perfectly.
      Thank you for your great feedback as usual 😊

    • @ytdood
      @ytdood 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@siasek yes, a voice command or user predefined profiles. Even if it's with a double confirmation, but it would literally make the car so much more pleasant. I think that's probably one of the easiest interfaces to implement, just like memory seats, it's not rocket science...
      In the meantime, I'm waiting patiently for the new SW versions to be available :D

    I think OTA is vital and needs to be deployed as soon as possible.
    I had a Tesla and got used to updates being simple to do.
    In the case of the MG4 - their updates are VITAL as there is still so much wrong with the software. Having to book a service visit to get new software is a massive pain and many dealers simply will not do it unless you report a specific fault that needs rectifying and the new software will achieve that.
    Personally, I want new software when it becomes available and dont want to have to wait for the annual service and even then have to ask nicely to get the latest software installed.
    OTA soon, please.
    I have only had my MG4 Trophy for about 8 weeks and it was delivered with r40. My bluetooth completely failed and they took it back in to install r46 which has solved the issue but now I no longer have the manuals available as they messed up the install and forgot to update them but wanted the car back for another day to fix - no thanks ill forgo the manuals. There are still MANY foibles and I want to keep on top of new updates for the best possible ownership experience.

      @siasek  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh man, your service experience sounds like a mess... sorry to hear that. I've definitely heard very mixed reviews from people regarding service, seems like a lot depends on who you run into. OTA updates would really help bring this under control and unify customer experiences (hopefully for the better). Fingers crossed OTA updates will be here soon! 🤞

    My MG4 dealer in Canberra, Australia did an early service (4000 km) on my MG4 last week. It included a "software update". I asked for the version number and release notes - they had no idea. The next day I discovered that the tyre pressure readings had changed from kPa to bar (not an improvement) and the cruise control incremental adjustment had changed from 5 km/hr to 1 km/hr (an improvement). I still have no idea what version I am on, or what else was in this release.

      Canberra, the capital of Australia - it's often a trick question for us in trivia games because most people think it's Sydney! I guess you guys know for sure, don't you? 😁
      It's really sad that even the service/dealer isn't able to tell which version you are on/which they are installing, yet they have to work with them. Seems like total chaos!

    The selective memory of remenber settings is a pain, and also not consistent. Some are maybe regulatory but MG4 does keep TJA on but not ACC or Limiter. ACC is jerky and not relaiable in town and also to much speed limit changes which has to be set manually because automatic traffic sign recognition and setting of speed is also not relaiable.
    So i am used to use limiter... and have to set it every time.
    Also new "feature" on R33 is Radio stays off exept when it doesent some time it plays... Why not remember the last status?

    Hey Fina! The Polestar OTA updates for me have been simple and trouble free. We just get what we Polestar owners call the “angry cloud” on the dash letting us know we have an update. Then we simply lock the car for an hour or so and it updates. It can also be scheduled. Don’t ask me what has been done in the last two since I owned the car, but nothing major that I noticed.

    I feel like some of the fixes mentioned (eg LKA on/off on pull-down menu) are more like workarounds than actual fixes. I'd rather be able to leave LKA on and have it work as intended, than have to turn it off all the time. My local MG dealer (Lincoln, UK) have told me repeatedly that there are no updates available (I know there are) but even if there were (there are!) they don't want to install them as it could brick the car and they'd have to send the head unit away to be reset. I see your point but I don't mean a list of defects, rather a list of fixes. Because new customers will notice the problems right after they buy. And if they don't find reliable answers and solutions, their next car will definitely not be that brand.
      So I'm not saying they need to like advertise the issues per se, just more keep existing customers in the loop to keep them happy and foster brand loyalty. A happy customer is a loyal customer!

    Ok. Let's see how a best-selling is bad. I bought mine in Feb last year 500 miles on clock MG 4 SE. Trip was from Leeds to Swindon. I left the shop and after few miles I was curious how it charges (was curious about the charging speed) I stopped at one of the services on the way and I plug the charger: car return error: he can’t be charged. I changed the charger thinking that the charger might be faulty. Same thing with second charger. Moved to the third one after few a attempts car decide to start charging. We left in our way and slowly the day become night and I observed that the low beam was - TOO LOW. My wife said that I have a problem. Well, I decide to go at MG dealership and wow the best car of the year, the one of the bet selling car straight from factory comes with the lights unadjusted. Left the garage and went back after one week. Why? no can’t be, can’t best car of car year in UK no way - the Android and apple car play continuously disconnecting. Can’t use the services at all. Right, so they done a software upgrade and after that everything wasn’t fine. Radio wasn’t working only when he wanted, they solved apple car play Apple, not the Android (weird) and obviously the temp gauge disappeared from central console. I am pretty sure that work in conjunction with temp gauge, being overwhelmed by the professionalism of the guys in the dealership garage I decide not to go back. And regretting buying I get home. Wow no way MG the best - I have keyless entry but unfortunately the button on the passenger side (sigh) decided that I don’t need it (the one on the handler). No way - wait what? ooaa is broke, it doesn’t work? Nope. I didn’t bother to do anything to it (the garage is too much for me). I can live with that after all in will pay 33k on finance worst car ever. OK. Now because I like to drive, I'd said let’s see how this car performs bit over 80. You know what i mean. Surprise. The car shakes from all his joints. Well from my knowledge the wheels need to be balanced and aligned properly (SHOULDNT THEY DO THAT IN THE BLOODY CHINESE FACTORY?) spend some £ from my own pocket for a car let’s say new and did all that. Retested the car seems fine but not like it should be, after all you don’t drove it over 80 (unless you are impaired, or you are 68-year-old - no offence). So in within 3 weeks all of that- FOR THE BEST SOLD CAR IN UK FOR THE CAR OF THE YEAR. Ow I forgot to mention they didn’t bother to install a led light in back. Too expensive, i guess. Ow hold on in 2023 no parking sensors on front. OOOOO hold on - the central heating - if you are cold on 26-27 feels warm (not hot- warm) under that is cold (no AC on) Probably I have California mode because as you all know in UK the climate is tropical. One year ago, people queuing to have one. Now is no problem. Some buy them keep them a while and return them. So thars my experience. Now check the market for EV around 27-33k and tell me would you still buy MG? Did I mention about the big part of the windshiled who remains unwiped ? On the bottom left corner ?

      Hi, thanks a lot for sharing your experience. As I mention in my videos, customers have completely different experiences with MG4. For you, unfortunately, more flaws came together at the same time. But MG seems to be making improvements to the new model years and they have made software updates to the older ones which solve quite a few of your faults, unfortunately dealers/service don't want to install them, often because it takes a long time. Some customers are even told there aren't any. I highly recommend the forum www.mgevs.com/forums/mg4-ev-forum.38/ where you can get advice or pick up more information from MG4 owners.

    1. The temperature offset, which Bjorn Nyland thinks is not an offset as such, but is due to the set temperature being the temperature of the air coming out of the ventilation ducts, not the temperature reached in the cabin. He thinks this is a common thing in many Chinese-made cars.
    2. THE INFERNAL AUTO-LOCK! It still can't be switched off, as it can be in the Trophy, and it is literally driving me out of my freaking mind.
    3. The colour of the battery SoC indicator. This is supposed to change from green to amber at (maybe) 50%, then from amber to red at (maybe) 10%. Very few cars actually do this, although there is video where some do, and a couple of owners have said their cars do it right. God knows how, because in most cars it stays green the whole time, except that the amber colour gets lonely and sometimes appears randomly irrespective of the actual SoC. It's possible it regularly changes to amber below 5% charge, but since few people go there, nobody is quite sure. (Someone suggested it was a decimal point thing. Instead of amber at 50% and red at 10%, we're getting amber at 5% and red at 1%, but nobody has gone to 1% to find out.) It's a small niggle, but hey, come on!
    Things not fixed right.
    4. The switch-off of the LKA. @siteguru says that it's not a one-tap off as indicated in the video. The one tap still gets you that "are you really sure you want to do this?" confirmation dialogue box, which has then to be tapped again before it goes off. Not useful if you need it off in a hurry. This needs a physical one-press button, not messing around on a touch-screen as your car is trying to drive you into a pothole. Also, since most people who turn off the LKA as part of their pre-flight routine also turn off the speed limit recognition at the same time, and the speed limit recognition still needs the old procedure to turn it off, I don't think this innovation is much practical use.
    5. The thing about the audio volume. But I always use incremental one-tap changes anyway, so it's probably not a biggie.
    Things that have been fixed right, and the reasons I'm dying to get the upgrades.
    6. Heating the car (and the battery) when plugged in but not charging. This is a bigger deal than I had realised, because if you're about to start a long journey and you have your car at 100%, then you have to unplug to get it to heat, bye-bye to a significant little chunk of range. Now, apparently, the car will take the power from the mains to do the heating, even if charging has already finished with the car at 100%.
    7. THE USB AUDIO PLAYER NOW WORKS! This was a big gripe of mine, that I had to spend literally days renaming files as a work-around for the player not supporting folders. Now it does.
    8. The auto-lights no longer come on when the sun goes behind a small cloud, but at dusk, when you expect them to.
    9. The radio no longer comes on when you sit down in the car regardless of whether you had turned it off before you got out. I'm not sure if it remembers its previous setting or simply waits politely to be turned on every time, but either way it's an improvement.
    That's all I can think of for now. Thanks for the videos and keep them coming. I have a small suspicion that your last video contributed to the improvements we have now achieved. (I'm @Rolfe, one of the forum moderators, but the way.)

      That would be really cool if your suspicions are right and the previous video along with the MGEVs forum had helped with making some improvements! Thank you for your comment, it clarifies an awful lot of things that I, as a non-owner, couldn't immediately figure out. I'm bummed that the LKA wasn't actually worked out to turn off with just one click and still has to be confirmed, that's very annoying and inconvenient to do on the touchscreen while driving. 🙄 I was so excited thinking they had finally fixed that... well, hopefully MG will still make that improvement soon.
      The USB being fixed is wonderful news, having to manually edit all the playlists must've been very time-consuming... I would have been upset for sure, so I'm happy they took care of that, and I'm sure it makes life more pleasant 😊
      It's still a shame that MG doesn't communicate changes and improvements. I always put myself in the shoes of a technician who does the software development, how happy he is that he fixed something, but he can't tell anyone but his boss who won't tell anyone else. 😄 Maybe I could invite one on my channel one day.
      Thank you again for sharing all of that with me. If we keep at it, between TH-cam and the MGEVs forum, I think the MG4 will steadily make its way toward perfection, one update and improvement at a time

      @@siasek I was over the moon when I heard about the USB player, I kept asking people to check their cars, was it true? I've put a hold on copying any more files to my USB stick for now, until I get the update. I'm looking forward to editing the track names on the ones I did already so I don't have to have the name of the composer and the name of the work scrolling across the screen the entire time, and being able to find the exact track I want without guesswork, because the visible part of the filename (it truncates on the selector screen) isn't entirely taken up by the name of the composer and the name of the work. I did wonder if your mentioning the problem on your video had helped.
      I don't hugely care about the LKA because I am never not going to turn it off before I start to drive, other than if I'm not leaving the 20 mph zone in the village when it won't activate anyway. I do not require any car of mine to take control of the steering wheel (unless at less than 10 mph and I'm using the TJA). If I'm getting tired on the motorway, yes, maybe, but in that case I shouldn't actually be driving. And yet, I find I never get tired driving the MG4 in the way I got tired driving my ICE cars. Just the smooth ride and the lack of a piston engine? Or is it remotely possible that ICE cars allow a tiny amount of CO into the cabin, just enough to make you feel a bit shitty?
      I truly love driving this car, and the various niggles are either liveable-with or can be worked round. But it doesn't really seem beyond the wit of man to fix these things and get owners *really* raving about the ownership experience.
      Next thing in my sights is that infernal auto-lock. It can be switched off in the Trophy, and indeed in any other car I know about, and I hate it with a fiery passion. I'm sure it's just a bug, they didn't intentionally curse SE owners with this, but they still haven't fixed it.

      In the list of things fixed I forgot to mention the external temperature display. That was present on R13, which is what my car came with and still has, and I rely on it for a lot of things. It vanished with R16 and was still absent on R21, and we got a lot of rot from at least one MG dealer along the lines of it was never meant to be present on the SE, the base model owners shouldn't expect such luxuries, and as soon as MG realised it had been enabled by accident they put out R16 to remove it. I wish MG-adjacent people would simply fess up to a goof-up rather than infuriating owners by trying to pretend it was intentional. See the excuses for the undertray warp. But it was a goof-up and they fixed it. I think a lot of new owners were complaining about the read-out not being there.

    • @moragkerr9577

      @@edsilvester When you drive off and reach 10 mph, all the doors lock. Some people are OK with it. Some people (usually in dodgy inner city areas) like it. Some people hate it. It drives me insane. I feel as if I'm trapped in the car, although I know that isn't really the case. Also, I drive 300 yards to pick up a neighbour, and she's tugging on the handle because the door has locked itself.
      It should be a choice whether to have this or not, as it is in the Trophy. But in the SE the function to disable it is absent.

    Your comment about lack of communication between manufacturer and the end user (Client) is not confined to car manufacturers. Most products that you buy have fancy websites that you can go to for information and as you say much of the information is trying to sell you something. Try to resolve a problem and you have to be Sherlock Holmes to locate a portal. Many sites have Bots or AI assistants, which on the whole are useless. Unless Your issue or question fits the parameter of set answers you can not obtain the information or answer that you need. Try to find an email address or name of a person to contact. Computers were supposed to have opened a whole new way of communicating, made it easier but no they have added more stress and complication. So I ask MG and all manufactures, give more thought on after sales support and communication; not just flashy websites.

      That's exactly right and we need to push for change because it just can't go on like this. High tech tech means high tech tech support. In the future I believe that is what will determine what brand/model we choose. Because all brands have problems, but the ones that are active about resolving them tend to be the ones with a loyal consumer base.

      Agreed, though with the amount of control modules in the MG4 it might be more difficult than in a Tesla, which only has one. Simplicity definitely does have some perks. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed for MG to make it happen. 🤞

    One company already provides a high-quality ownership update experience, Tesla. I've owned three and all received ota sw updates many times each year with new features, and even improved braking and acceleration for my M3P. All installed easily at home. The cars literally improve as you own them. No other car company comes close. It's not the only important thing in EV ownership, but I think those who haven't owned one long-term don't give this enough consideration when evaluating the competition.

    • @moragkerr9577

      I think you need to factor in the price. I couldn't have afforded a Tesla, realistically. I could afford the MG4. Also, I wanted and needed a hatchback. I couldn't be doing with the shape of the Tesla. So there were a number of consideratios which worked against Tesla despite their stellar reputation for excellent software.

    • @siasek
      @siasek  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Of course Tesla does this really well because this is the first thing they focused on. I believe China is hot on their heels followed by the smart car companies that bet on Android Automotive. But in terms of updating on-board units, which they have multiples more of than Tesla, it's just still prehistoric for the others. 😅
      I'm a big Tesla fan, but I still never put it in the mix for my future new EV. It's interesting.
