  • HP Umpire Lance Barksdale ejected Cubs pitcher Keegan Thompson for throwing at Brewers batter Andrew McCutchen during a 9-0 Chicago victory over Milwaukee. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2022/...
    Several Cubs batters had been hit by pitches earlier in the game; no warnings had previously been issued. The intentional hit-by-pitch of McCutchen resulted in a benches-clearing incident for the second day in a row; two-thirds of the young MLB season have occurred on a day that featured a benches-clearing event.

    This is one of the ones that the requirements to “confer with the crew” causes more issues. Lance runs this guy immediately 3 years ago. When he does, 50/50 that the benches come out. Without the immediate EJ it’s 100% gonna be a bench clearer.

    • @vincentwendt720
      @vincentwendt720 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Or you have a situation like last season between the Braves and Marlins. The umpires were probably going to eject the pitcher anyways but the Braves manager was upset about his player getting hit. The umpires have to calm him down before they can conference, which gave the perception that the manager influences the umpires, even if it wasn't the case. I think the protocol sounded good in theory, but it is not practical as it has ended up creating more problems for the umpires by not being able to immediatly take the appropriate action to try and de-escalate the situation.

      If MLB wanted to stop bench clearings it would happen. They clearly don't want to. It's very simple, if you leave the bench and you're not supposed to be on the field of play you're ejected on the spot. The same goes for the defensive team. If you leave your position to engage in an altercation you're ejected as well. It's so bush league to see this kinda crap. A bunch of guys acting like they're gonna do something and they never do.

For me the bad move is 1st pitch competitive cutter/slider and then plunking him. It reveals that the Cubs didn't really just wanna hit him (to warn the Brewers as a whole) and move on. Their intention was to hurt McCutchen (also the newest guy on both sides, smh) by making him stay in hitting mode longer and that's where you don't just get a buttcheek bruise but you can get seriously injured and sidelined for months if the pitcher slips up by a few inches. No one is there to watch you umpire. Long live pitching inside, hit batters, team leaders, confrontation, and the hard nosed/great game of baseball.
