It's hard to think of a car that has as much potential to appeal to Auto Express viewers in 2017 as the new Skoda Kodiaq. This is the brand’s entrant into the hugely popular mid-size SUV sector, so we jumped at the chance to get behind the wheel for a very early first drive on UK roads. Would our expectations be buoyed or dashed? James Batchelor finds out...

I really like this guy. He makes some nice reviews. Reminds me of Quentin Wilson from old Top Gear. With those jokes and voice as well. He is a likeable person. Don't be rude people!
Great job mate, keep up with the good work!

Hi James: thanks for getting back on the badge value thing. Skoda do offer terrific packages. I find it interesting that Kia and Hyundai have transformed their Brand Image in less than 10 years. I believe that it is unprecedented. Their residuals are now so good that it affects folks decision to buy, irrespective of whether they are badge sensitive or not. SUVs hold their value far better than the saloon/hatch on which they share underpinnings. A Volvo XC90 might therefore represent value in a way that it's high initial cost might not suggest.

I was very impressed by your review and it convinced me to go to Skoda dealer for a test drive. We liked it so much that we bought one! We bought the 1.4T petrol 4x4 7 seat dsg. The car is so smooth for a 1.4 with the dsg box. The quality and style impressed me too. I've had VWs for years and my other car is a Passat cc 3.6 V6 4x4 dsg. The quality is certainly comparable and is better equipped than my cc all be it a 2008 model. Try skoda, try the Kodiaq! You'll be surprised just how impressed you are by it.

Fair point, good contenders but the marketing and in fact the solid serious german look of the Skoda, I think will get the win because SUV buyers are people that are scared of their safety... very few people really need a SUV. The car gives the user a superior position on the road and people like beeing superior so that's why SUV sell. I would without a doubt buy a outback, wrx, alltrack, allroad, quattro than a SUV.

Something like 15 years ago, when FSO in Poland was being bought by Daewoo, some of journalists over here were laughing at Skoda being bought by Volkswagen.
And look how far they've gone now - the new Kodiaq style-wise can easily compete with Audi (not in the quality of interior department, but the price also reflects the value greatly).
I'm really proud of them - they've gone a long way, changing not only quality of their products, but also their perception and that's no easy feat.
As to FSO in Poland... wind sweeps empty factory halls, rusting-away whatever's left of our motoring industry. Skoda made the deal of century, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them.

they have to build a performance version of the kodiaq ie Sportline or VRS model there have been rumours mooted that Skoda may use the 240bhp twin turbo diesel engine. Really hope this happens to give the car more character also the 280bhp petrol would be an awesome engine in the Kodiaq to. COME ON SKODA DONT BE BORING PLEASE GIVE A PERFORMANCE MODEL!!!

Sorry but you would not buy a Kodiak rather than the equivalent Discovery Sport to save £4000. That is little more than 12 % when residuals and image do not compete. Irrespective of how good it is (and clearly it is good) those numbers do not stack up. Would you buy a good but sub premium sports car to save 12% on a Cayman? Please don't patronise!

    • @alexanderdunning6586
