I love your enthusiasm and clear love for the scenery and hills. I also love this hill. When I climbed it a few years ago we went up through the corrie and emerged on the summit up a wee grassy gully. Then descended your ascent route. I'd love, some day, to do your descent, but I might go up it instead.
As a long time visitor to Skye I've seen the changes in visitors over the years. It seems to me that The Storr and other popular spots are now things to "tick off" and post to social media rather than enjoy for what they are. Hopefully some will go and find a love of the outdoors they didn't have before.

A great video..spectacular scenery and your black and white photos showed the drama of the location...as an.oul boy my first 20 years of photography was mainly black and white film work...I was last on Isle of Skye in 1966 when I was 6, its time I was back..many thanks for a great video.

Nice, thanks! My first visit to the Old man was in mist, so I went up west of where you descended and reached the Storr summit. I only saw the old man on my decent, briefly in a gap in the mist. Yes been up several times since and I really miss the forest which gave a dramatic reveal to the old man...

  • @islandhopperstuart

Great video Murray. I did that route for the first time in May around thirty years ago. In those days you made your way up a narrow, muddy path up the side of a plantation to get to the Old Man, and there were few if any people about. Loved the circuit then and, as with you, the descent was spectacular.
By comparison, I last visited one April about four years back and what a change: despite the provision of laybys, parking was next to impossible and when we did manage to dump the van, the manicured path was a doddle, at least to the plantation boundary fence, after which there was, and probably still is, a 5m wide scar of erosion, not to the Old Man, but to the viewing position. The place was like a zoo with folk all over the place, some lying down in the middle of the path, others taking selfies and so on but, thankfully few venturing to the base of the Old Man, and even fewer into The Sanctuary. Had we had time we would have done the circuit again but, instead, we came away fearing for how tourism is swamping the hot spots of Skye. It was the same story at Fairy Pools and at the Quirang viewpoint. So, please, don't publicise this route too much! But, as I said, a great video!

  • @patrickhazlehurst8472

Nice video. I agree with you it's a summit worth visiting. We did it on an impromptu basis one afternoon when we went to visit the Sanctuary and continued up the edge of the cliffs and down by your ascent route. Great views from the top, and spectacular cliff scenery. Sadly I'd left the cool-box plugged in and we had to wait for the AA to start the van! I;ll look at for more of your videos .... keep 'em coming!

The isle of Skye and the old man of storr has long since been on our bucket list, but it was brilliant to find out that when we do have the opportunity to visit, there is a hiking route that takes you beyond the crowds and affords you some really unique views of the rock formations, thank you so much for enlightening us on that😊👍. I admire the way you are not too fussed by the weather. Yes you get some days when it's not great but the days like this when the weather gives you rewards you don't expect are the best. I agree that The Storr is a great summit on a fantastic ridge. It also interests me how people are fixated on routes that others write about - I almost never look at them. I have been up and down Corrie Faoin a couple of times - no difficulties that I can remember and your stream descent looks no easier. Interestingly the summit above the Quirang is very unlike the Storr and quite notably duller than the Quirang itself.

Wow on that aerial view the whole of the side of the sanctuary , the face leading to the sea looks as if massive sand banks had been dropped all around it and over it, I’m wondering due to the massive landslide’s that occurred there a million or more years ago did not cause some kind of Tsunami effect rushing backwards and forwards ( bathtub effect) from Skye to Scotland ? I’ll do some research and I will let you know, I love looking at the geological history of rock formations as well, it’s mind blowing. Old Owl 🦉 alaya.

Fantastic Murray. Stunning area. Back in 2010 I left my girlfriend sitting on a rock near the old man whilst I went around to bag The Storr. Said I wouldnae be long, but think it was nearly 3 hours. 😬 She wisnae happy. Made it up to her next day with a boat trip around Kyle of Lochalsh. She's my wife now so she must've forgiven me. 😆

We were one of the 100,000, didn’t even occur to us that was an option. So annoyed. Good excuse to go back tho. Great vid

Coolest way to visit it is on a paraglider. Unfortunately it is 5 1/2 hrs away and weather does not play ball often.

Nice one Murray. I have reached that summit. I did a very similar route to yours but in the opposite direction. The drops from the top were well scary 😳😬. ATB Dave 👍

Do you ever take a tent so you can take shelter if weather changes or it gets dark?
Beautiful views, looks like a scene from Star Wars. Thankyou for sharing

Great video as per, which Glenlivet do you like, I decided to try it as I do like a good single malt but there are 4 different ones so thought I'd ask a Scottish expert

I did about a quarter of Storr the other day but the path was all just ice and it was just too dangerous.

I'm afraid we're guilty of not going beyond the old man. Will have to rectify that next time on Skye

Another great video Murray. What did you use to produce the animation on the map (showing your route)? Would love to include that sort of thing in our walking videos.

thanks folks - this was my lockdown project - learning to to the animations - I use adobe after effect for these and it does take a lot of time to do (takes me as much time doing the mapo annotation as it does to edit the video!!)(. I wish there was some easier apps of software (google maps does offer some alternatives or mapping software like outdoor active with their fly through options). You can use photoshop for map annotations too but there is a learning curve with that too. Hope that helps

I had to laugh at this and not for a bad reason, at myself.
I have visited the Old Man 5 times over the last few years and 5 times he has had his cloak on, wet, windy and ermmm, atmospheric weather shall we say which is great for a wee wander when you have a warm van or room to dry out in but the last twice I was camping. Still very beautiful though and I have decent images from when I managed to get the camera out.
I laugh at myself though as I genuinely never realised there was a mountain top there as the emphasis for that spot really is on the Old Man but I'm glad not many know, sorry knew of this top.
Next time I might just take the tent up, a few days supplies and wait out the weather. I feel its my only option.
