I wish Rig Rundown existed in the 80s so we could see one for Steve Clark.
AGREED!!!!
+Oallright totally, Steve was 1 of a kind and will always be the heart of Def Leppard.
"'ere's my Les Paul, ere's my Firebird now pi*s off"
Or SRV
And cliff
Phil Collen is so down earth. so cool.
hes a pretentious twerp
He smokes that guitar too.
What a humble rockstar !
Met Phil, he is just a fantastic person, NAM show one year and I quite literally bumped into him at the Jackson booth. I happened to be holding a PC1. He sat down and went over the guitar with me, just a great guy and a great player. Love seeing him continuing to be successful
I love how he, living in the US, retained his English accent
Maciej Świechowski which means he probably visits home a lot
he's around the guys in the band alot so it probably comes and goes
@Leaving Nadir Phil is from the East End of London. 👍
Damn. Props to this guy for using steel picks and 13 gauge strings. That shit ain't easy night after night.
Starting using steel picks this year and haven't looked back. It takes a little getting used to but the tone is so sweet that it's worth it.
He's tuned to E flat, so they're similar to 11's in E. I use 12's tuned to D, which are almost dead on to 10.5 sets. If your playing style is really hard and you beat a guitar (like me) they work great. Otherwise light strings sound horrible when you beat them hard. But....every one plays what woks for them....no two are alike.
NO DOUBT!
The One aint that the truth! I was thinking that same thing! Im a .09 guy and always have been, and i cant even tolerate .10s at all! I couldnt imagine his gauge
And yet Yngwie uses 8's. EVH uses 9's. I don't think it makes a massive difference, just use what your fingers tell you is comfortable.
I miss Dirks on rig rundown. She knows her stuff and alot of the artists would come out instead of sending their techs as well.
The world needs Rebecca Dirks now more than ever
I miss Rebecca:(
Me too! She's lovely.
Yeah they use a hot girl to get their numbers up. Then they got rid of her
Phil is a great player period.
And a very classy guy he come across as a really nice guy
2019 and I'm still lovin me some Rebecca
LOL facts bro.... literally a dream girl too have, her husband is a lucky man T_T
I'm pretty sure we all miss her interviews with Satchel.
You wish.
She doesn’t have social media? It would be cool to see what she’s been up too
She's Hoooot
He seems to be such a nice and down-to-earth guy! I sat in awe while he was talking. Really interesting to hear him talk about his gear.
13 gauge strings and steel picks - I thought this guy was English not Asgardian.
I can't believe his strings, .013 and his action is pretty high! I don't like to work that hard on guitar! My .009's are great, plus my gear gives me great tones!
13s are easy you just have to play them enough. Doesn't matter what gauge you use, you get used to what you use. I have trouble going back to 9s because it feels sharper on the fingers when i jump back to it.
@@BroDocTrev Say hello to Odin for me.
Yeah he's my asgardian brother😂😂😂
@@zaigar111 9
i know he constantly mentions this a lot, but man, those necks on his guitars are HUGE! cant even imagine playing one.
Dude looks really young for a guy in his 50's. Keeps in sick shape.
Now he's 60, and has not aged a day.
It’s now 10 years since this video, and he still looks AMAZING! I’m convinced he’s an alien. 😂. And a super nice one at that!
Great rig rundown - impressive collection, those PC-1s are awesome. Phil seems like a really personable and unpretentious guy, and to boot Def Leppard have rocked for years.
I’ve seen him in plenty of interviews, as well as talking to fans on the street, and he’s always super friendly and sweet. Just a great person all around.
I just clicked on this after the Yngwie Malmsteen Rig Rundown and what an about-face: Yngwie's ego and 0.08s vs. Phil's humility and 0.13s.
...man I love Jacksons...
Jackson is life!
Helloy Almeida HELL YEAH 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽 !!!
He has a skill unique in top rock bands of being able to make any no expense spared super rig sound just like a 1982 Tom Scholz Rockman.
He IS, after all, very dry and British. He also loves multiple places like Illinois, Iowa, Spain, Japan, Australia, Canada and Pennsylvania. Even California where he now resides (30 minutes away from the Jackson Custom Shop).
Phil’s playing on the Mirror Ball album brought me back to Def Leppard as a fan. I took like a few years off, but hearing his leads live just made me remember why I loved this band!
Me too! I was always a huge DL fan since High & Dry, have seen them eight times in concert since ‘83. But more of a casual fan the past 20 years. But recently got back into them again and I just can’t get enough! They are a rare band of guys who are true friends and whose music and talent easily passes the test of time! I just love them to pieces. 💗
Phil is AWESOME. Mega thanks for given back to your guitar playing fans. Spectacular!
How rad is that Phil does his own rundown?
he probably saw this beautiful girl and said i'll do it myself. I know i would
he did a 2nd updated rig and showed off his guitars then for the last half his tech Scott Appleton (the same man who works for Alex Lifeson of Rush) talks about the rack amps and stuff
And both of them are Monster innovators, clearly very smart guys (obviously May, what with his PhD and all..). Cool tidbit! And also not surprised! Good stuff
wahwah1013 Cause hes a cool down to earth guy.
@@Doones51 damn right if I knew she was gonna be interviewing me I'd jump at it and jump her later :)..
phil collen is one of my favorite musicians his guitar skill is amazing hi has a really nice look to him aswell rock on man!!
Very down to earth! It's nice to know some guitarists will actually rundown their own rigs instead of their techs, nice to see!
One of the best rig rundowns I've seen. You can tell he really enjoys what he does. I also liked how Phil took the time to do the rundown himself.
13 gauge?! Daaaaang.
Great vid... Phil's a nice guy, and the flamed and quilted maple on those Jackons is beautiful... highly figured maple necks and fretboards is a sign of real quality (and expense!)
These are hands down the best interviews out there. Not just for the gear, but for the format. She did little talking, great info being shared, and just 1 "fluff" question on the end for a smile. I hate seing interviews of my favorite musicians and they ask "how did you meet", "who's the messiest on tour"..
I was there that day! I saw them sound check in the afternoon and saw the show that night! Love that this behind the scenes was captured!!
Phil is an awesome dude! Looks like he's got a great personality, great player!
So happy you stay with Jackson...so many strayed , and you stick with what you know . Cheers !
Of all the cool guitars you see in these I think he may have my favorite collection. So different than anyone else and the looks are just bonkers.
Phil Collen is one of the best. Phil and Steve Clark is the best I ever heard. Terror Twins. Amazing !!!!
Best rig rundown so far... and I'm not even a def leppard fan, he's just an awesome guy who knows his things.
A pleasure to hear him talk about the Rockman amp, designed & built by Tom Scholz of Boston. I have 2 of them.
Just brought back bad memories of mushy thin tone for me. Get in touch on my channel if you want my original shitbox belt-clip ch.rev. switching plastic overated rubbish.
I'll take it
Rebecca, Do you play guitar? I was wondering because you ask all of the right "guitar" questions. You have a great job being able to interview people like Phil Collen. PG Rocks!
I saw Def Leppard at the Bone Bash the weekend before last. The dude was shirtless through the whole set and the MILFs and Cougars in the crowd were going crazy!
+deepvoodoo ya a shit guitarist picking up skank whores-- any club band can do that--
+Joe Jack I suspect the only "shit guitarist" involved in this video is a commenter named Joe Jack.
lol all these idiots think phil colleen is a good guitarist what a joke
Joe Jack can u play dipshit then shut your pie hole go vote for Trump fking loser
Scott James Lewis Storm Videos lol true that..people always bitchin about who is a real guitarists
I love the fact that he still sounds British even though they're in the states so much!
I’ve noticed the titanium in his guitars. I have those upgrades in my dean Razorback v. The titanium sounds amazing without killing the bottom end. Cleans sounds so crisp and very bellsy and with distortion it sounds amazing too
Phil's Guitar Tech: Hey Phil, how many Jacksons do you wanna take on the road this tour?
Phil: All of them! 😂
I bought his book. Pretty good read. Very stylish guitars. Iconic 80s riffs.
I’m reading his book now! I love his honesty, his humor and his stories. Just an amazing guy.
16:09 just finishes face-melting shredding, and then resumes talking so calmly lol
Love to hear that he's using the stock JMP-1. Dunno if that remained the case forever, as I've always seen him name-dropped as a Voodoo client, but the fact that he relied on the OG unit onstage even for a little bit is a testament to how sick these units are.
.013 ! damn, he has some steel tipped fingers I guess. Here I am struggling to bend .008s. hahha
Sorry to be off topic but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot the login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
@Alexander Yosef instablaster ;)
@Eliseo Randy I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Eliseo Randy It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my account!
@Alexander Yosef You are welcome :D
I couldn't attend the show but I'm close enough to the fairgrounds where I could hear them play while I was outside for some late-night grilling on deck. The crowd sounded INSANE.
Love a man who loves his gear!
Hes perfect in every way people period his guitar,s are incredible
Noting that this is a ‘vintage’ interview, Phil Collins is such a nice guy and truly a great example of the best of guitarists. Not afraid of technology and just going for the thing that works for him. Always been one of my favorite guitar heroes. The interviewer was a bit starstruck I think but she handled this much much better than I could have lol.
I appreciate when a guitarist that cares enough about his guitars to put thought into a name.
Awesome rundown of Phil's rig. I don't like Dimarzio much but Phil knows how to make them sound like heaven
I love that he gives his own rig tour and not a roadie.
Nice to see the actual guy instead of the guitar tech, shows he really likes talking about his stuff and knows about his stuff.
I went for a job interview a couple of years ago, the two Guys that interviewed me looked like Phil Collen and Bobby Charlton.
It was a crap job, I turned it down.
I've watched a couple of these rig rundowns and Phil is the ONLY one where he actually shows her his rig. All of the other ones are their guitar techs that show them their rig.
If their is any guitarist other than Neal Schon who nails melodic guitar parts at the drop of a hat & that's Phil "Kenneth" Collen!!!
My two favorite guitarists! ❤️
Amazing guitars and awesome guitar player PHIL COLLEN!
Phil looks really fit and healthy. Well researched and presented by Rebecca as usual. Asks all the right questions and lets the interviewees talk!
Great collection !
@timeforachange12--- Lmao, this guy has made millions with that right hand technique, you should be so lucky... Why don't we see you on tour making millions?
what a great vid, kudos to Phil & Rebecca.
Phil, I bought my son a Xiphos, Ibanez which changes colour red / green, he's colour blind too!
He can't see it either! Hehe!..
The Jackson's with the reverse headstocks look awesome!
Txs for the rig rundown too!
I fucken love Phil Colleen. He looks so excited showing his stuff
I play a Jackson nothing else, great guitars. Great choice Phil :) See you in Honolulu, HI Oct 20, 2018 a sold out concert.
i think this is my 5th time is 3 months watching this video because of the beauty of Phil's guitar. i wish i had one.
Phil rocks man. So down to earth!
saw def just a couple years ago...three-fifths of the band is still ripped and went shirtless most of the night. i was impressed.
One of the best guitarists in the universe hands down
I totally agree I don’t know why people say his playing is crap
Full credit for Phil giving us the tour himself!!! Top man!
and Phil... DUDE you really have a GREAT gear and the MOST beautiful guitars \m/
What a nice guy Phil is, superb.
Love them PC guitars! Love to have a play of one with its BEEEFY 13s on hah!
What kind of amp did Phil and Steve use in the 80s because I don't think Phil used a marshall preamp back then?
Man those guitars are amazing.
"A Randall Power Amp From The 80s that I've probably been using since the 80s" Really
Rebecca is always pretty bangin'. Phil seems like a fun guy to hang out with.
I ❤️ Phil's Jackson's
I've bought a couple of Jackson's recently and had them in the past.. I've seen Ibanez and others, but it's Jackson I gravitate towards. I bought 2 used Jacksons off ebay a JS32 Dinky which needs a new bridge and I've Dimarzio's I'll get put in. It's now become my go to guitar.. The other jackson I bought was a Jackson JS32 Kelly.. No doubt I'll swap those pickups out for Dimarzio's.. Dimarzio Tone Zone (bridge) and Air Norton (neck).. I've a Tokai Love Rock which has got Dimarzio Super Distortion (bridge) & Super 2 (neck) both humbuckers coil tapped.
*Phil is such a nice and humble guy!*
"this is the pred it uh" guitar. lol
yeah his accent’s cute
but why is he using palmer speaker simulator, he goes straight to pa, or mix signal with amp ?
Met him twice, He's really nice guy. Totally cool!
I like the strat style headstock better then the pointy ones from the 80s. I use to like em but im pretty sick of that style now days and i think the fender is alot more classy.
That cameleon stain is awesome. Thanks phil. I borrow alot of your technique. Thick picks, strings big necks being my preference.. maybe I never had a choice.
@15:38
I think she liked his action
life of a rockstar.. damn!
@nsfr3 Same day, different state. This was at the Iowa State Fair, the stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair.
Came for the rig rundown, and stayed for Rebecca's nice and full tone knobs!
Hey there Phil great 🎸 guitar lesson teacher there.I think that you did an excellent job here at it there!
Phil's got to be one of the most underrated guitarists going, top bloke aswell.
What happened to the Ibanez explorer? I fell in love with that guitar from pyromania!😎🎸🍺🍺
I'm just tuning in for Rebecca! RIP Pete!
My favorite guitar is the splatter strat.
I like it to .the designs are breathtaking...like rebecca
damn.... those guitar looks so gold...
Def Leppard is awesome! Like AC/DC and Black Sabbath are!
When is she coming to do my rig rundown? "Say Guuurl! I have a total stock Epiphone Les Paul and I play on an Ipod on Garageband.". More rundowns with her please!!!
16:56 I love how he finds humor in "How do you like your action?" lol
Phill seems to be a very nice person to talk to... That was awesome!!!!
Rockman Amps, I'mma have to look into them !!! All this time I was eyeing Marshalls !!!
ce hayes Rockman is a rack mounted amp and cab simulator. Tom Scholz of Boston invented it and used it in most of the album's. Hysteria was recorded using the Rockman Headphone Amp sound.
colteastwood Well you've convinced me, I gotta get me a Rockman !!! It's not about the name brand, it's about the sound !!!
I have the Rockman Headphone amp original from the early 80s. Don't buy the Rockman Ace series, Dunlop makes them and I hear they are awful.
colteastwood Thanks 4 the info & will do !!!
I was kinked into using an original Tom Scholtz Rockman, tiny little thing, a switch for CH. Or rev , ...hated it. Fizzy, thin, noisy & 'unmusical'. No separation, a mushy sound. Altogether quite disappointing. And yet, the next person may love the thing, get great results. This is why I love what we do...
Had to click in to see who that smoke show was. Glad I did. Jesus.
Most all these rig rundown vids I noticed something. 3 big rigs stuffed with equipment. Signal goes through 14 miles of wiring, hundreds if not thousands of circuits, filters,eq after eq,compressed, echoed, reverbed ,flanged, split, boosted, preamped and then ran through a flux capacitor and toaster oven for good measure. Then the artist talks about how they like keeping their "tone" simple.Ha. I like when he talks about the weathered guitar tone sounds better than the others. You think that signal coming out that jack and through all the above gives a rats ass.
On stage they have to imitate their old records' sounds, that's where the millions of electronics come in. Have you heard his modern stuff? Or when he writes at home? That's what he's referring to. Playing the hits from the 80's and making it sound like the albums everyone knows is anything but simple.
Aiming Wanderously I am not ragging on the guy. I have been collecting effects pedals since the early 80s and have enough to open a small store. In my man cave I run stereo to a Marshall YJM and a Mesa. I have "thinned" down my pedalboard and now down to,lets see 12! Mostly overdrives and vintage Electro Harmonix pedals all running through a bypass looper cause I like that clean straight to the amp tone also! I probably have about 50 feet of cable.
Sounds like quite a nice setup! I use a Blackstar HT40 with a ZOOM G3X pedal, all I seem to need or have the patience to learn to use at least.
Guitarist evolution. Guitar-cable - amp. Then Guitars,wireless,40 pedals- boutique head, 4 cabs. Then finally guitar, cable, amp. Full circle....
This really reminded me of watching Spinal Tap when Nigel is showing his guitars to Rob Reiner. Maybe it's just Phil's voice.
I know! I kept waiting to hear him say, “but this one goes to 11!” 😂
