In reality she/he is just a Yami's lackey (demonstrated by her/his reverent dialogues towards him), and most of his "divine" power comes from the Fox Rods. Once you destroy his tails (and the Fox Rods for extension), his illusions disappear and the TRUE nature and appearance of the fox comes to the surface: An old and emancipated Yokai fox, devoid of an eye and ANYTHING that could classify her as "god". A miserable being in practice.
The tsuki-kitsune, or ghost fox, either possesses a woman's body or creates a body of it's own. The fox is neither described as a man nor woman, but it's usual victims are, in fact, women. Amaterasu, according to legend, brought down Orochi with her to engage in combat. But Kamiki Village was nearby, and Orochi, every 100 years, terrorized the village and threatened to wipe them off the face of Nippon. After he was defeated, his body was split into 4 beings, Ninetails was one of them.
The sword on Kyuubi's mouth, it's a Seven Branched Sword, used for ceremonial purposes, it originated in Korea but was implemented into Japanese culture as well.
I remember hearing somewhere that a Ninetails, once having reached nine tails, is supposed to get more powerful as they LOSE their tails, eventually hitting one and becoming a Kyuubi. Instead, what we get is a sad, pathetic fox demon that just doesn't know when it's beat.
All we got was an old fox that was angry at old gods and took revenge upon Ryoshima and the Sei-an Quarters. Yami was enticed by that for its own reasons.

Tenko are usually depicted as having 4 tails, as opposed to the 9 of a 800 year old fox. Once the tenko becomes 3000 years old they become a kuuko, they reach their maximum power and they completely lose their tails.
I love Ninetails as one of the primarily antagonists. He's just so evil and so cool, I mean look at him, he's a false god, he's got an awsome mask, a sword, and nine brush-like tails that paint with red ink/or maybe blood? I mean, he beats the hell out of a lot of nowdays videogame antagonists.

Maybe Ninetails was a spirit. In some Japanese folklore stories kitsune were fox spirits; some were beneficial to people and to nature, but most kitsune were mischievous. Your all forgetting that Kitsune have two types the Inari kind are deities while the wild Kitsune like Nine Tails is evil many of these were males while females were regarded as goddess of the shrine while males acted like teenagers or evil demons like our Nine Tailed friend here

pretty sure the creator said it was male, and ya it's not even a true nine tails, its tails were as you said manifestations as in Japanese myth even plain shinto (before the fusion of shinto/bhudism) Kitsune tails were invulnerable, which is why you can't harm its TRUE tail but you break the others (their fake).
I always heard you couldn't break any of their tails, but they had a magic glass sphere that contained their soul either carried in their mouth or center tail, called the hoshi no tama (Soul Orb) and destroying that would take them out. It becomes a pearl necklace when they possess a human. In one story someone managed to steal a kyubi's soul orb, leaving the fox indebted to him, it later saved his life from a bandit raid.
In the legend of Tamamo No Mae/Kyuubi or in China Daji or India Lady Kayo Kyuubi always appear as a beautiful maiden and playing as an advisor so that she could deceive emperors and rulers making them corrupt rulers she was only defeated in japan by an exorcism of a group of Onmyoji's (Japanese Mages or priests)
NGL this is probably the one boss where they REALLY should've just stuck with calling it "Kyubi"; renaming it to "Ninetails" is gonna cause people to mix it up with Ninetales the Pokemon. @_@
What would be nightmare fuel is if they merged together.. We would get Penny-Tails, The Nine Headed Clown that would have a hunched-over posture, and it continues to eat people to gain more power. The 'tails' could be sewed on curtails that mimic fox tails. If anyone decides to draw that sort of abomination, my only request is.. please make some of the heads look fox-like.
Rao was killed by nine-tales so 9tails could assume rao's form to get close to queen himiko (forgive me if i spelled that wrong) at least that is how it was handled in game.

I thought the constellation was just another brush god. Then I saw the silhouette of the "god" itself, and I knew what I was in for.
If you know every mythological reference the game has, it makes the game very interesting. Also try Okamiden for the DS afterwards.
