Turns out it was a Best Supporting Actor award for 1986's "Hannah and Her Sisters". That's okay. I've never been a fan of Woody Allen. A quote from Caine about "Jaws: The Revenge", extracted from a 2013 article in The Telegraph: "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.”

Recent follower of the Dead Meat channel (congrats on 1 million subs BTW!), and I have to say, although I enjoy the utter craziness of James's main channel, I have to commend Chelsea for doing such a great job on the Dead Meat podcast. She always come up with some really interesting, thought-provoking topics to discuss, and I really learned a lot of stuff about the horror genre just from this podcast. Really hope Chelsea does more one-shot movie discussions, I like to hear them dissect movies with a more critical mindset. Keep 'em coming!
Everything on this channel is so polished and developed with such insight. Both The Kill Count and Dead Meat Podcast feel like they elevate what's expected from TH-camrs. Congratulations on the 1M subscribers. It's well deserved! (PS) I watched Return to the Valley of the Dolls on IFC in college before IFC had commercials, and I personally loved it. Have watched it a few times since as a guilty pleasure and it's fun to hear about it considering I may be the only person in my social circle that has watched it.
The Roger Ebert review of I Spit on Your Grave is one of his harshest, but it’s so well-written, and almost builds the horror-like suspense around this “ugly/vile” film he’s discussing, like it’s some forbidden horror he doesn’t even want to acknowledge. Also one of the only films he ever walked out on and gave zero stars. And... yeah I can’t really hold that against him.
Just about everybody trashed The Thing. Ebert giving it 2 1/2 stars was a blessing. It's one of those movies that critics have revisited and reevaluated and placed in much higher regard. It's certainly considered an outstanding psychological thriller/horror today.
yeah and I don't think he was too harsh on it either. I gotta admit, when I first watched The Thing, I was disappointed in the characters. The effects, brilliant ofc, and the action cool, but the characters and pacing really annoyed me, even though I'm definitely used to slower paced movies. I think its definitely a movie to rewatch if you don't like it the first time around.

I completely disagree. If there's one movie I agreed with Gene Siskel on, it's "Aliens". I love "Alien"! It's legitimately one of the scariest movies I have ever seen in my life! It's probably the only horror movie that made me cry out of fear. But, good God. I absolutely HATE "Aliens" with a passion! It's the number one movie I hate but everyone else seems to love. It is exactly the same as all of the sequels afterwards: lazy action fluff with masculine forgettable characters that are just there to get killed, zero suspense or horror, complicated subplots about science and morality crap, and worst of all, no surprises whatsoever!! "Alien" is the perfect masterpiece of horror and it did not need any, I repeat, ANY sequels!! And Siskel and I aren't alone! Giger, The designer of the xenomorph, is not a fan of the sequels at all and I relate to him so much! I heard that another movie of the franchise is currently being made and I REFUSE to watch it. "Alien" should have been a standalone classic.
I actually watched The Devils Rejects yesterday! When Chelsea was asking James what movie he thought it was, the whole time I was like “devils rejects devils rejects devils rejects”. James reaction was so funny to me because it is a strange movie, and obviously the acting is... a blunder, but taking a further step into analyzing it, it’s a great movie. It’s so rare to find a movie post 2000’s that reallllly give you that 70’s feeling to it, with the whole way it was cut including those cheesy transition scenes. Roger Ebert is definitely unpredictable in his tastes. He gave one of my favorite horror-adjacent movies, Van Helsing, a movie not a ton of people like, a 3-Star review.

Thank you so much for this episode! So much of my appreciation and love her film came from Roger Ebert. I spent literally hundreds of hours of my youth from the ages of nine onward reading and rereading his reviews and essays. There's something almost poetic about how Roger Ebert died on April 4, 2013, and the Evil Dead remake was released on April 5, 2013. Such a fabulously gory remake of a widely maligned original.
"I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" assembles the building blocks of idiot-proof slasher movies: Stings, Snicker-Snacks, false alarms and point-of-view baits-and-switches. As a film buff growing up in Chicago, Roger Ebert had a huge influence on my life. As Chelsea said, I didn't always agree with him, but I always enjoyed his reviews. I always liked that he compared movies within their own genre and on what they were trying to achieve. He didn't dismiss popcorn movies out of hand, unless they failed to be entertaining. p.s. Anaconda is indeed a crap movie, but my family had a blast watching it back in '97.

i love how when james hears the review about the thing (2,5 out of 4) he is so disappointed but when chelsea hears the review about her favorite movie (2 out of 4) she looks so proud of it
Jason X is the equivalent of listening to a song (Friday 1-4) then listening to the Kidz Bopz version but with a Minecraft Parody version overlayed on top.
The best things to come out of the late F13 films were the trailers. You knew it was campy schlock, and the only question was how goofy was the end result going to be? The best trailer for the worst sequel has to be for "Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3." There was supposedly a second trailer planned that built off of the Excalibur theme, but there would have been copyright issues. Instead of the original Lady in Lake, this would have played off of the Sword in the Stone. Recognizable horror villains like Freddy and Jason would fail to extract the chainsaw until Leatherface pulls it free.
I used to watch siskel and ebert with my grandma growing up.I once asked "why do you watch this they just complain about movies" She said "Because they talk out of their ass and the shit that comes out is funny" lmao Like my grandma hated horror but she was also said "Well its (horror) not my cup of tea but i'm not gunna flip out on somebody for not liking a western"
Yea, it's LOIS DUNCAN, and yeah, she pretty much said that she thought the mystery in the movie was "just buried for a typical Slasher Movie, with Of Course, a Killer with a hook for a hand". (what's far more creepier is that her daughter was murdered and she wrote a memoir about trying to hunt down her daughter's killer, so she's better known for her YA novels, but she's totally talented).
Nice little historical side note Ebert gave both Psycho and Halloween 4 stars, so while his relationship with horror was complicated he did love the classics. He also gave Jaws a 4 star!! I used to love watching At The Movies the arguments between Siskel and Ebert were hilarious. Ebert also wrote the screenplay for the film Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (among others as Chelsea mentions) so he had a relationship with exploitation to some extent, which gives me opinion Siskel was much more critical of horror. Ebert was one of the greats I truly miss him, Awesome podcast loved every second of it!
My favorite Siskel & Ebert moment came from an episode of The Tonight Show. They were interviewed before Dolph Lundgren who was promoting Rocky IV. As per tradition, Gene and Roger remained on stage as Dolph was interviewed. Johnny Carson was asking about Dolph's workout routine, and then inquired if Dolph thought he could get Gene and Roger into shape. Dolph turns around to look at the pair, and then turns back to Johnny to give a somewhat unconvinced affirmative answer. During this whole sequence, Gene and Roger look like two kids on Christmas morning. They genuinely appeared to be thrilled at the prospect.
I started watching over the last couple years and I always forget you have many years of content to check out when I need background chatter when I'm working. 👍 The more I watch, the more YT recommends.
This is the first Dead Meat Podcast I listened to from beginning to end. It was really enjoyable to play along and realize how much knowledge I have about horror movies based on the reviews and Chelsea’s clues. I even giggled at the “shit, shit, shit” clue because I knew what it was instantly. I have been a fan of the kill counts for years and I am glad my first foray into this new rabbit hole was so enjoyable. On to the next!
Haven't finished the episode yet, but just had to say I love how much effort and research Chelsea puts into the podcasts. I also just watched Prom Night two weeks ago or so, and for what its worth the kills were something like 2 males and 4 females.
Love the podcast. I know James is upset that the bad reviews for The Thing might have contributed to it flopping, but I can't help feeling like we'd have not gotten Carpenter's most sweet natured movie Starman without that happening. A bit like the failure of Big Trouble causing Carpenter to make one of his most interesting movies - Prince of Darkness.

One film I saw a video with Ebert was him and Gene Siskel giving a surprisingly positive review on Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Well earned if you ask me. Both gave it a thumbs up.
This was a lot of fun. I've read so many Ebert reviews over the years, that I remembered most of the review excerpts, I just couldn't place them. It was frustrating, ha ha. Re: Hellraiser, I don't remember anything enough to care, but Hellraiser 2 is the only movie I've walked out on, or, in this case, stopped the DVD. Just once in my life. What bothered me was that the first hour was exasperatingly boring. I vividly remember vociferously berating the movie for taking so long to go nowhere. The appropriate feeling was stultifying, that's a good word.

If I remember correctly, Ebert was always sensitive to gratuitous physical/sexual violence or child/female endangerment in films. Which is why he publicly detested the Friday the 13th franchise. Because let’s face it, the emphasis was on the brutality and gore with the story being an afterthought.
Kellan Borgstrom So he gave shitty movies like the Happening, Van Helsing, and Anaconda better ratings than The Thing. I respected Roger, but when he was wrong, he was very wrong.
I think he called House of a Thousand Corpses a “Texas Chainsaw Massacre wannabe,” but I distinctly remember how pleasantly surprised I was by his review of The Devil’s Rejects.
As soon as Chelsea said the part about Michael Caine I knew they were talking about Jaws: The Revenge. As a huge fan of the first one I have watched all of the sequels at this point and the only one worth watching is the second one. You are absolutely right to stay away from them James and Chelsea. Jaws did not deserve to be driven into the ground like it was.
I've always found it very interesting to observe the parallels between horror fans and non horror fans in film criticism. To really follow and appreciate a critic you have to know their biases and thats an interesting place to start.

I was lost here 7-Blair Witch for sure 8-I thought the VVitch but he had died by then 9-Re-Animator 10-didn't have a guess before James did 11-did not have time to guess lol 12-no idea again. Hey Ya'll. I was there. I grew up watching and discerning for myself what to go see. Much of what Siskel and Ebert say is spot on. What they covered on that show was mainstream. There were tons of lesser known films back then. We had the Double Bill back in the day. They would show a mainstream film and a lesser know film, two for the price of one. I saw The Deer Hunter and Tourist Trap together. If you know both films, you might ask, what were the theater promoters thinking. I'm glad they did that. I would never have known about Tourist Trap. The Market was saturated back then. There was good horror and there was bad horror. You think today's Found Footage Horror was overdone. Well, the same thing happened after Halloween.
I was surprised to find out about a third installment of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (of course, a direct-to-DVD with 0% critical reception). I didn't even question it when Chelsea mentioned Lois Lowry writing the book at 37:04 until I looked up the film franchise, realizing that it was in fact the late Lois Duncan (who also wrote "Hotel for Dogs"). Though it is true that she did hate the in-name-only film. Even more interesting, it seems that Sony has had intentions of rebooting the film- with Mike Flanagan as the scriptwriter- since 2014 and set to release as late as 2020... however, it still won't have anything from Duncan's books nor the 1997 film.
I put this one on the bottom of my list while binge watching these podcasts because I thought I wouldn't find it as entertaining as others since I didn't know Roger Ebert. Now I regret it A LOT, this was so so so much fun!!

Jason X is the equivalent of listening to a song (Friday 1-4) then listening to the Kidz Bopz version but with a Minecraft Parody version overlayed on top.
The best things to come out of the late F13 films were the trailers. You knew it was campy schlock, and the only question was how goofy was the end result going to be? The best trailer for the worst sequel has to be for "Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3." There was supposedly a second trailer planned that built off of the Excalibur theme, but there would have been copyright issues. Instead of the original Lady in Lake, this would have played off of the Sword in the Stone. Recognizable horror villains like Freddy and Jason would fail to extract the chainsaw until Leatherface pulls it free.

Yea, it's LOIS DUNCAN, and yeah, she pretty much said that she thought the mystery in the movie was "just buried for a typical Slasher Movie, with Of Course, a Killer with a hook for a hand". (what's far more creepier is that her daughter was murdered and she wrote a memoir about trying to hunt down her daughter's killer, so she's better known for her YA novels, but she's totally talented).
OMG so this is where James hatred for I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer came from! It's so fun watching these older podcasts.

Nice little historical side note Ebert gave both Psycho and Halloween 4 stars, so while his relationship with horror was complicated he did love the classics. He also gave Jaws a 4 star!! I used to love watching At The Movies the arguments between Siskel and Ebert were hilarious. Ebert also wrote the screenplay for the film Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (among others as Chelsea mentions) so he had a relationship with exploitation to some extent, which gives me opinion Siskel was much more critical of horror. Ebert was one of the greats I truly miss him, Awesome podcast loved every second of it!
My favorite Siskel & Ebert moment came from an episode of The Tonight Show. They were interviewed before Dolph Lundgren who was promoting Rocky IV. As per tradition, Gene and Roger remained on stage as Dolph was interviewed. Johnny Carson was asking about Dolph's workout routine, and then inquired if Dolph thought he could get Gene and Roger into shape. Dolph turns around to look at the pair, and then turns back to Johnny to give a somewhat unconvinced affirmative answer. During this whole sequence, Gene and Roger look like two kids on Christmas morning. They genuinely appeared to be thrilled at the prospect.
Really love this channel. The chemistry between the both of them is genuine and more so refreshing for TH-cam.

This is the first Dead Meat Podcast I listened to from beginning to end. It was really enjoyable to play along and realize how much knowledge I have about horror movies based on the reviews and Chelsea’s clues. I even giggled at the “shit, shit, shit” clue because I knew what it was instantly. I have been a fan of the kill counts for years and I am glad my first foray into this new rabbit hole was so enjoyable. On to the next!

I also just watched Prom Night two weeks ago or so, and for what its worth the kills were something like 2 males and 4 females.

Love the podcast. I know James is upset that the bad reviews for The Thing might have contributed to it flopping, but I can't help feeling like we'd have not gotten Carpenter's most sweet natured movie Starman without that happening. A bit like the failure of Big Trouble causing Carpenter to make one of his most interesting movies - Prince of Darkness.

Re: Hellraiser, I don't remember anything enough to care, but Hellraiser 2 is the only movie I've walked out on, or, in this case, stopped the DVD. Just once in my life. What bothered me was that the first hour was exasperatingly boring. I vividly remember vociferously berating the movie for taking so long to go nowhere. The appropriate feeling was stultifying, that's a good word.

If I remember correctly, Ebert was always sensitive to gratuitous physical/sexual violence or child/female endangerment in films. Which is why he publicly detested the Friday the 13th franchise. Because let’s face it, the emphasis was on the brutality and gore with the story being an afterthought.

As soon as Chelsea said the part about Michael Caine I knew they were talking about Jaws: The Revenge. As a huge fan of the first one I have watched all of the sequels at this point and the only one worth watching is the second one. You are absolutely right to stay away from them James and Chelsea. Jaws did not deserve to be driven into the ground like it was.
I've always found it very interesting to observe the parallels between horror fans and non horror fans in film criticism. To really follow and appreciate a critic you have to know their biases and thats an interesting place to start.

Hey Ya'll. I was there. I grew up watching and discerning for myself what to go see. Much of what Siskel and Ebert say is spot on. What they covered on that show was mainstream. There were tons of lesser known films back then. We had the Double Bill back in the day. They would show a mainstream film and a lesser know film, two for the price of one. I saw The Deer Hunter and Tourist Trap together. If you know both films, you might ask, what were the theater promoters thinking. I'm glad they did that. I would never have known about Tourist Trap. The Market was saturated back then. There was good horror and there was bad horror. You think today's Found Footage Horror was overdone. Well, the same thing happened after Halloween.
I was surprised to find out about a third installment of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (of course, a direct-to-DVD with 0% critical reception). I didn't even question it when Chelsea mentioned Lois Lowry writing the book at 37:04 until I looked up the film franchise, realizing that it was in fact the late Lois Duncan (who also wrote "Hotel for Dogs"). Though it is true that she did hate the in-name-only film. Even more interesting, it seems that Sony has had intentions of rebooting the film- with Mike Flanagan as the scriptwriter- since 2014 and set to release as late as 2020... however, it still won't have anything from Duncan's books nor the 1997 film.
This was such an incredibly fun episode. Loved playing along and actually did pretty well with my guesses. 4 stars
