Terry slayed this video even with the poster's obvious bias towards Beyoncé. Terry has range and it's not just that she can hit certain notes. Terry has the ability to reach notes and registers in different ways so that her singing is not boring, dull, and soulless -like Beyoncé's.
Terry is junior and high school classmate who can sing in ranges without the video and audio enhancements that clearly Beyonce requires. Beyonce is a performance artist.
Terry Enough said that girl can sannnnggg love Bey too but Terry has the better singing voice she can hit those notes naturally without all that screaming
Anyone who says Beyoncé is better is crazy and has to be deaf, im not saying people cant like beyonce, i'm just saying Terry Ellis of En Vogue is a million times better a vocalist
Terry hands down. Dont get me wrong im a fan of both these ladies but terry has way more vocal training and control over her voice bey seems to force notes out at times and not to be rude but there are a lot more songs by terry where she displays way more control than bey example check out her vocals in the second verse on envogues runaway love she slayed
Anyone picking Bey over Terry needs their ears check.. Bey can sing but Vocally speaking Terry notes are more eased than Bey... Plus Terry more soulful . I highly doubt some of you were even born when En Vogue was around.
Both ladies are definitely talented but I side with Terry Ellis! Range, control, and emotion are natural and consistent. I wish En Vogue could have stayed around to be the kind of role models our young girls can understand that you can be a singer and entertainer with your clothes on! I hate this trend in the entertainment industry where women must dress loosely or not at all. Terry was known for keeping covered in her heyday.
OMG! I just saw that! I don't want to be shady but the struggle had to be real then for Terry to go from one of the from powerhouse En Vogue to sitting and being a back up singer in Beyonce's newly started solo career. I also saw Chante in that perfomrance!
Terry is a vocalist. Beyonce is a singer. It boils down to who you would rather listen to with several songs back to back. I could listen to Terry on an entire album. After about the third song with Beyonce, I would have to turn her off. She screams and yells way too much. Beyonce should never be mentioned with Terry, Whitney, Mariah, etc.
Terry, Terry , Terry dahlingkkkk.. Beyonce becomes pushier the higher she goes... .. that g#5 for me.. was ... Beyonces low notes are good though, not going to lie.. ; but on a whole.. Terry .. .. In all honesty En Vogue was a beast of a group, the fact that they had 2 lead singers on roughly the same level and the back ups who are both on Micheles level.. Great group..
What a great battle! Both are amazing. I give Bee a slight edge, she had a bit more control in the upper chest (pass F#5). But Terry's first C#5 trumped. I didn't care for low notes picked. The head notes were a flat out tie, I loved it. I would call it an even, but I'm leaning toward Beyonce. I enjoyed this video
Oh I didn't take it as shade lol. I just understand if anyone would think the lower register section would not be as exciting as the rest in this particular battle. Thank you!
+JLPerryTV The word "Alto" is not a specific vocal fach. It is a section in a choir or ensemble where many specific vocal fachs sing within that section; Such as; contralto, mezzo sopranos of different fachs and dugazon ( a rare hybrid vocal fach).
+Calvin375 Thank you, I know what it means. But I was referring to classification (soprano or alto) and she is an alto. Also, altos/contraltos are perfectly capable of doing F6 with ease. Terry gives the illusion that she is a soprano because of the vocal parts given to her in En Vogue, but a lot of people (including me) agree that she is an alto
JLPerryTV Again, "alto" is not a vocal classification of a specific voice. Alto is a section in a choir/ensemble that can include several vocal classification/ fachs ( contralto, mezzo-soprano, counter tenor and dugazon( a hybrid voice). Alto is NOT a specific vocal classification/ fach. Terry is a full lyric soprano and has the vocal weight, ease and agility of such a voice. Not all sopranos have a very high tessitura in their natural vocal tone. Some have a lower tone quality like Jennifer Hudson who is a Dramatic soprano and some have a mid range tone such as Terry. Just because she is able to sing in a lower tessitura at times, does not make her an "alto" at all. In fact, no one can be an "alto" because it's not a specific vocal classification.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alto
No G5 or C6 for Terry?...What a joke...You should do more research...Terry Ellis is the real deal and would mop the stage with Beyonce...Beyonce can sing though but NOT like her...that's all
Jackson Greene Terry hasn't sung above an F#5 in her mix outside of that one G#5 (not even on her one solo album). Terry has sung a C6 before live, but this was based on studio efforts alone.
Jackson Greene You shouldn't even bother with this clown. He makes En Vogue vocal range videos but doesn't even know who sings what then goes to En Vogue performance videos and leaves backhanded compliments like: "Ooh Terry had great resonance that night it might have been the microphone." What a joke!
urlildawg2 Oh I see...Well this video is kind of a joke. He put Beyonce's greatest riffs and notes and left off most of Terry's. I can think of about five F5 and F#5's that are better than these. For starters, how could you leave off the climax of "Damn I Wanna Be Your Lover"?...Beyonce could NEVER..The "Whatever" riff is a must, etc..Like I said...A joke
When was Terry ever Bey's back up singer? I do agree with you that people tend to overlook Bey's vocal prowess in favor of her overall package. It mainly stems from the fact Bey's tone is just overall pleasant and not remarkable like Whitney or Mariah or even Kelly who people insist is a better singer than Beyonce. I personally love Beyonce's twangy sound, but most people want to be wowed immediately and Bey off the bat can't deliver that.
Beyoncé: D3, E3, C5, D5, Eb5, F5, F#5 | G#5, Bb5 Terry Ellis: Eb3, C#5, E5, G#5 | G5, A5, B5, C#6, E6 Tie: D6. They tied for me. Beyoncé takes the lower registry and most of the belted notes. Although Terry has more ease in her chest voice, I prefer the punch Bey puts behind her notes. Terry's lower registry is nice, but she really shines with her head/falsetto voice. Stunning, really.
If you examine their Top note at the end of the video( E6) they are hitting it in two different registers. Terry is using whistle ( flageolet voice) to access the note it's light and airy while bey sings it almost like an opera singer would. fully comnected in a Super Head Voice I think that's a nod to her classical training and far more difficult for ANY soprano let alone a Mezzo like Beyonce. I think from a technical stance Beyonces instrument is impeccable and she has an enormous access of it even from the extremities in her range.
Yodels? I don't understand what you are talking about. She does have clarity, none of the notes I used for her sound the least bit murky or muddled (even outside her comfort zone). She is a performer, but her vocal ability, and use of it, is pretty top notch compared to most of her contemporaries.
I agree. I think one reason I prefer Bey's chest is because her voice is a little heavier (or that punch) than Terry's (which I never noticed until doing this video).Thank You for commenting!
Yeah the low notes were a bit of a bore, just because Terry doesn't have as many to work with (she rarely went down there), and I tried to choose different low notes for Bey. Anyway thank you for commenting.
Oh I am very familiar with those performances (I think there are very few Bey performances outside of world tour concerts that I have not seen). I love Bey and her voice and the Barbra tribute performances has to be a fave just for the restraint she showed.
Honestly i love them both. I would say terry because thats who i fell in love with first. but beyonce is a little more versatile when it comes to vocals. the thing i love about this video is it makes me want to go listen to all those songs, but it would take me all night lol
Terry Ellis is a true talented vocalist. Beyonce is not. I put Beyonce in that Janet, Madonna category, not a true vocalist. Also backup singers sound better than the leads most of the time. Look at Madonna's backround singer, Niki Haris. I rest my case.
No problem: almost every singer praised her but i can tell you Jill Scott and Stevie Wonder really love her! Are they reputable enough for you? Anyway you just have to listen to her to understand her greatness
Beyonce's mix is much more even than Anastacia's and Beverly's. If Beyonce can mix further and has proven it, but she prefers to once again keep it more evened out. So she loses ease higher because of that as well. However she is consistent on her upper belts and rarely goes above a F#5/G5.
Beyonce took lows and chest...tied the head. Beyonce wins but vocal battles always come to preference no matter how "knowledgeable" ppl are or claim to be
A singer's mix, what helps them hit higher notes (to put it bluntly). A producer cannot alter the quality of your vocals to the point where they can alter a singer's mix. In what world does that happen? No autotune (or whatever else) can do that. Stop reaching.
I need receipts for Terry's vocal training. I heard she was taking lessons, but stopped. All of this while in En Vogue. Also Terry was/is way more indulgent than Bey ever was, and it wasn't always for musical purposes. Bey grew out of that, Terry didn't. Runaway Love is a weak example that Beyonce can and has accomplished. A chest to head transition in mid range is not hard for a vocalist of their calibre.
I want to just correct one thing: Terry can't belt higher than Beyonce. They both end at G#5. Terry possibly could have gone higher if she had learned how to mix (she is very chest dominant). Also Terry is a soprano so she naturally has more ease up there than Beyonce (a mezzo).
Beyonce has no power to get her signed anywhere (plus this statement was made last year), she has also acknowledged Bey's vocals. Not her money or her power, but her vocals. And Jill is classically trained so she has more knowledge than most of us.
Okay I need receipts to this whole yodeling thing. I am comparing her to Terry right here and she holds her own, and in some aspects win. Beyonce's "mediocre" voice is used in a way that would be highly regarded by people with knowledge of vocals, other than what just sounds good to them. And that last part has nothing to do (nor even really makes sense) with anything in terms of her vocal ability so stop.
Terry didn't know how to mix, and even if she did, it was dumb on her part not to do it. A chestier mix for a light lyric is not smart. It will damage the voice. Terry has seen an obvious decline in her belts (not as epic as they used to be). Also I left out notes on Terry's end that were poor in quality vocally, so that ease up there didn't help her all that much.
With all do respect Beyonce is just as much of a vocalist as Terry. Beyonce doesn't scream. You can't maintain resonance and project if you are screaming (which Bey demonstrates in this video). Beyonce's technical prowess is much better than Terry's, where as Terry has more ease as she ascends (due to her being a Soprano). Personal preference does not make one better than the other.
Beyonce takes the lower register more ease and ping from here, Terry puts up a nice fight in the belts, but Beyonce is more resonant and her vibrato kills. Head voice was a tough one because this is where Terry shines, but both women have beautiful connected head voices. Overall, Beyonce wins.

Beyoncé wins this battle by far. Terry is really good, but her chest dominant belts aren't good for her voice and she has ease ascending her range thanks to her soprano tessitura. The fact that Bey is able to be huge in soprano's tessitura while being a mezzo says it all. They are both really good in head voice, the notes are resonant and clear, simply amazing. Terry has a wider range. Beyonce is a good singer.
I agree Terry has a wider range.
I love Bey lord knows I do but Terry got it hands down her voice can do way more than Bey's it's a a proven and known fact!!

I wonder if you still agree with your statement
Beyoncé has nothing that stands out about her voice. She can sing, but it’s not emotive.
They are both born on the same day...September 4th, I'm not sure why the comparison of vocals is necessary but Terry has a trained range of octaves.
Agreed! An NP. Great video.

I've always considered Terry to be an alto, especially now
She is
+Charles Turner No she is not. She has always been a full lyric soprano who sings a flawless F6. Listen to "Don't Go" lead by her.
+JLPerryTV The word "Alto" is not a specific vocal fach. It is a section in a choir or ensemble where many specific vocal fachs sing within that section; Such as; contralto, mezzo sopranos of different fachs and dugazon ( a rare hybrid vocal fach).

Terry uses Super Head not whistle and her head voice is MUCH stronger than Beyonce's. It's not even close.
She was Beyonce' backup singer when Beyonce first came out, look up Beyonce's "Fever" performance like from Jay Leno etc.,
Beyonce is a mezzo and Terry is a soprano, both have excellent vocal technique I prefer Beyonce's music more but Terry is a very impressive vocalist.
Yodels? I don't understand what you are talking about. She does have clarity, none of the notes I used for her sound the least bit murky or muddled (even outside her comfort zone). She is a performer, but her vocal ability, and use of it, is pretty top notch compared to most of her contemporaries.

You're welcome. And I wouldn't say she slaughtered Bey, but she definitely won that. Thank you for commenting!
