    I quit caffeine 6months ago because I'm caffeine sensitive (turned caffeine addict) and it was ruining my sleep regardless of what time I took it. The lack of quality deep sleep started giving me fatigue and terrible recovery, and I became more prone to injury. Quitting caffeine is one of the best things I've ever done.
    Other than that, another excellent squat video!

  • @guilhas98fcp

    Awesome video. Squats feel much easier when you take your time to setup up and are agressive to that bar. If for a second after unracking the bar I think "this is so heavy" it's game over. Confidence is key and getting tight as well!

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Guilherme Oliveira dude yeah totally! That’s why I’ll never jump to my next acclimation set until my last one felt strong and fast! I get the rack position, walk out and rep perfect and then go on. Helps sooo much.

    Excellent cues. Taking the slack out the bar is definitely underrated and you don’t hear of it often in relation to squat. Something that I’ve found, alongside pretty much all of those cues you mentioned, is a really strong quad and glute contraction once you’ve walked out and let the weight settle makes everything extremely rigid and stable and mentally the weight of the bar disappears and at that point I brace and unlock my knees and hips. What’s your thoughts on this?

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thomas Clark dude YES! I actually filmed that but fuck I talked wayyyy too long so I edited it out. But I indeed do that. I squeeze both quads and glutes to the point I get vertical as hell and my knees look almost hyper extended. Definitely helps. I think it’s from the irradiation and the core. It’s why I mentioned the full grip. Again it was too long to add but I purposely squeeze the hell out of the bar with the deep grip and it just feels soooo strong. Great insight bro! You’re on the right track

    Dawson Windham has a rlly good video on his IG about “wrapping the bar” around the back. Basically wrap around and down on an angle is the thought. Pulls the elbows and lats to where they need to be. Also takes about packing the chin and pressing back the neck to trap the bar as if you war trying to push it off your back with that tension but you got yourself doing the wrapping cue so the bar gets into place.

    What is your opinion on descent speed? Most people say you want to descend as quickly as possible while maintaining control to maximize your stretch reflex. Recently Stefi Cohen said she prefers a slower descent to ensure she keeps her hips in position and that recent studies have shown that doing this can actually increase peak force exerted. Would you say that these are technically the same thing (since even if you're trying to move quickly you should maintain your positioning)?

    Hey Brendan this isn't related at all to the video I just wanted to know can I still follow your free DUP program but skip the technique based day and still get similar results? This is because right now I have two jobs and college so am finding it hard to fit my workouts into a tight schedule so a 4 day training set up might be more feasible. As the technique day is really just an accessory day I thought it wouldn't do any harm to skip it and it obviously isn't as important as the strength and volume days. Or should I look elsewhere?

  • @Dr.MikeGranato
    @Dr.MikeGranato 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    When pushing the slack out on squats, sometimes the bar will rise just a hair off the pins - keep that tightness but let it settle before fully unracking. Sometimes when I’m super amped and forget to let things settle and all that tightness you just worked to produce gets lost and wasted a ton of mental and physical energy

    • @alexfitness7114
      @alexfitness7114 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm high bar squatting because my wrist is injured and I can't low bar. But my form still breaks down into low bar form on heavy sets. Can you make a video on high bar squattimg cues to fix this?

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      steezy there’s a lot to unpack here. “Low bar form” can be very broad but if you mean you get bent over it’s probably because you’re not getting extended and tall enough while simultaneously bracing your abs. It could also be a lack of using the quads and opening up the hips to sit down rather than sit back. Also it’s worth mentioning there isn’t really such thing as high bar or low bar form but rather just good squat form that’s very individual.

    Lol, I feel like you can always tell who the powerlifters are at the gym by how they unrack for a squat. I have to do thumbless grip when I squat to control for wrist pain. Would thumbless grip negatively impact the set up? Thanks!

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jennifer Applebaum not much however it will affect true shoulder external rotation however that’s probably why it hurts! I bet if you improve your scap control/mobility and external rotation the wrists won’t hurt. Of course though you’ll have to wrap the wrists. A full grip is similar to that on pull ups. Trainees often prefer the pull up with a false grip because it lets them cheat the rotation demand and when you’re tight it feels better. But that’s akin to relying on structural stability which me and Jordan (the muscle doc) talked about in my recent injury video. A false grip won’t be a huge deal but it’s something over time I’d recommend to try and switch. However if you can’t stay false, some people just get pain no matter what. But it’s worth a try to see if you can improve! Also 100% agree lol usually the more veteran of a PLer the longer they’ll take too 😂

  • @lightn1ng89

    First time I've heard about using that grip on the squat what's the reasoning ? I know for presses it helps stack the fore arms better .

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lightn1ng89 the deep palm grip helps to focus true external rotation (once you actually set the shoulders) along with joint stacking and irradiation. The grip especially really helps with muscular irradiation. I should have gone in depth on this in the video but I actually squeeze the bar hard af. This make my shoulders and back just feel soooo much more rigid. And if mobility is sound the shoulders get set better with the bar stacked to cause less wrist extension issues.
