how many hours a day did you practice when you first started and how long did it take for you to play a full song perfectly with no buzzing just like a professional?
Great question. I started when I was 11 years old, and I spent the majority of my teenage years practicing at least a few hours a day. Sometimes I'd lock myself in my room and jam, record, study videos, write songs for eight hours at a time. Basically, if I was working, I was practicing, or jamming with friends.

Thank you for your service. I too am a veteran. And I also am trying to learn this song. I lost my Dad last year and I have a hard time getting through the song without breaking down. I want to be able to play this song for my mom and siblings.

I'm so happy that after playing guitar for over 55 years these lessons are now available for me to cruise on down memory lane. Now retired I play all day long switching back and forth from acoustic guitar, electric guitar and keyboards. Your method of teaching is right on point and much appreciated, thank you.
29 years old and I'm on my first day practicing this song; Pink Floyd is my favorite band and also my first experience in a concert ever, some years ago my dad bought tickets to see Roger Waters in Mexico city, I was 16. This song represents a lot for me because reminds me that special moment with him and my brother, so now I live far away from him and the next time I visit him I want to play and dedicate this song and let him know in this way all my love. Wish me luck.
Wish you were here is one of those songs that once you've learned it and played it 100 times, you never want to play it again. Thanks to you teaching the next 2 solos (one by watching and listening) I now love playing this again. Thanks for your time and great job very well done.
Played it in my band for years, except I'd walk over to my co guitar player, and look at him with dreamy eyes and sing "how I wish... how I wish you were queer" It's hard to hear this song any other way now. Of course you can't sing this kind of thing today with everyone being so "woke" and uptight and all. Good times.

Love Pink Floyd, David Gilmore has such a strong Blues feel to his style. This lesson is great because i know the strumming and the first solo, now i can learn the rest of the solos! Beautiful!
I agree, David's style is unique but still grounded in the blues. I'm glad I decided to teach the second solo, I've noticed that the other youtube instructors are just teaching the intro, and maybe the first solo.
I am glad you added them too, this lesson is iconic and you can tell you put the time in. i will be joining your $f.00 a month deal soon. Not something i usually do, but i think it is worth it. Thanks again bro!
Great teacher... There are numerous great teachers online, and still Rob Swift was the best to teach Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" the best possible way... Thanks Rob!
This is BY FAR 👍❤️🎸the most complete and definitive lesson on this song!!And with you singing it’s actually like a little mini concert! I already have the basics of this song so I’m looking forward to learning those unique solos that I don’t know yet. Thank you for this wonderful lesson. David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist and Pink Floyd my favorite band so I always look forward to anything by Pink Floyd that you do.
Finally a tutorial with the exact way to play the song. I was just going through the video and the moment you started singing, tears came out of my eyes. This song reminds me a lot of my brother and my daughter who are no longer with us. It was a truly magical moment. Thank you so very much for helping out a lot of true beginners performing such a beautiful master piece. Can't wait to start practicing! Greetings from México and congrats on a wonderful performance.

My great friend without meeting you in person, at 21 years of age I sold my yamaha acoustic guitar to graduate as a mechanical engineer, today At 57 years old, I bought my 17-year-old son a guitar, my son plays and listens to the pink floyd records that I carefully keep safe and are new in their plastic bag and cardboard case. my son wants to learn he is new to playing guitar and I want to learn again or leave behind more than 40 years ago !!! .. I bought a used yamaha F310 guitar and I hope to have it on hand and play it soon I bought it from afar and I can not look for it because of the covid quarantine ... sorry for this whole story, your video is fantastic EXCELLENT too bad that youtube does not yet have an automatic sound translation of your language or voice, for me It is a little difficult to see the translation of your language and at the same time see all the details of your fingers playing the guitar, but it is still the best guitar learning that I have seen .. from here in Venezuela living like in a cage by the Communism that now does not even allow us to visit our relatives, much less remove the used guitar that I bought. This song "Wish You Were Here" is one of my favorites and I'm trying to teach my son how little I learned because my learning wasn't much when I just started to play the guitar and I try to do it with whatever I bought for my son. I ask you if you can answer me. . My son holds or closes his hand completely to play the guitar down and I can barely see the punctuation or pickup of playing the strings, is that normal? My son bothers me a little and I tell him that this is a bad posture, you have to have your fingers a little open to strum or pluck the guitar. you can help me in that. What advice can I give my son regarding that bad posture of the right hand. thanks for your great teaching and from now on I will be in your group .. thanks again ...
I've been playing for 50 years and I'm still learning. I lost the reading notes years back. But i know the chords and the basic scales. Music was my first Love.
Hey everybody, I look forward to receiving your song request, and am keeping track of the most popular suggestions. Visit swiftlessons.com/Request_a_Song to put it your request. Thanks!
This cover of Wish you were here has inspired me to pick up a guitar after a decade and to enjoy learning how to play. I love when a different artist can perform a classic track, emphasizing with technique and emotion that would make Pink Floyd proud.
I started this project haha when I was 61 years old and I nearly finish it take a lot technic I felt that this swiftlesson tutor explain very well, for me is amazing teacher ,not very complicated but difficult song to play, my fingers bleeding but it dosn't matter as soon I enjoyed this guitar practice , thanks swiftlesson you are awesome, see u later from kangorolandia Australia
Rob, there are so many tutorials online for this song but yours is by far the very best. And your voice is so perfectly matched for this song. And something funny, so many people who sing this song just can't get the opening "So..." perfect. I mean, it's just one word but you nailed it 110%. When people don't nail that first word just right it ruins the beautiful intro. One of my favorite songs of all time. Thank you so much for the great tutorial! --Mike
@@Malc664 A lot of people don't get that, Malcolm. When I hear someone sing the first word "So" in just one tone it ruins the rest of the song for me. It's gotta be done right. -Mike
Thank you. I'm still working on "California Dreaming." I can't thank you enough. As long as you go slow, I can follow you. I'm an old guy, and just bought a Taylor 12 string. You have given much happiness. Thanks again.
As someone said before, I could sort of play the strumming part and 'bit' of intro, but after many years you showed me that I can now play the solo's in an hour. So, 'many years' versus 'an hour' ,,,, result, cheers bloke, great work.
Thanks, Rob! My wife doesn't usually comment on my playing, though i know she enjoys hearing me when i play (esp now that i can actually make music, lol.) When i first listened to this video, where you were playing and singing, she heard it, and called out from the other room. She said, "You need to learn that song!". (Of course i answered, "Yes, i plan to!") And i did! Thank you for showing the solos. I don't have the recordings any more, and i just didn't remember enough details to play the solos. But now, it hasn't even been a whole day, but I've mostly learned the song with the 3 solos, as you demonstrated. Thank you, thank you! Your skill is off the charts! (Playing AND singing!). 👍 👌
I'm self taught but can always learn something new I learned on a guitar with 4 strings I found in the trash I have learned that the way a guitar is tuned or what kind of guitar it is can give you a certain sound
Sneak attack Cmaj chord! Yet another excellent example of how to convey not-so-easy informations in very coherent and simple form. I highly appreciate how you don't need to cut your material, just go on with stuff and it's all there. One love!
Today's the first time I've seen one of your vids and I just learned that not only are you an excellent teacher but one seriously talented guitar player!
I have to say buddy, this particular tutorial is by far the best I've watched. It helped me break my bad playing habits to somewhat 50% better play. Thank you very much, I've added this to my favourites 😃👍🎸🎸🎸
I've been slowly working my way through this video for three days. I'm not gonna lie this song has been a wild adventure for me, but now I'm going to practice singing it and this is all thanks to you!! thanks man be well and jam on.
Ive tried learning from alot of people on here and u are the only one I found that teaches people the right way. That and u take ur time and u also arent worried about show off your a very good teacher and I appreciate it alot im learning pretty fast actually so thanks and keep them coming.
Spent the whole day working on this lesson Rob. Fantastic. I learned that second solo and learned a lot of tricks and great picking and strumming patterns. This lesson is so accurate. Really working on refining this favorite song of mine now. Maybe in the future you could teach that last outro melodic solo that you did-so Beautiful !! Looking forward to your next lesson.
Hopefully you see this, jut wanted to say your inspirational to me whenever I learn on my acoustic I always turn to your videos, you break everything down to the littlest point. With out your videos I wouldn't be able to pull of the tricks I have learnt from you. Hell yeah it can be a challenge, but the way you play inspires me more to learn because you make it look so easy and you really put the time and effort into your videos for people to achieve their goals and you sure have helped me well and truly grateful, would just like to say a massive thankyou and I'm certainly sure I will be turning no wear else but to your videos. Thank you again buddy really do appreciate. From Macauley, living in United Kingdom. :) Thank you!!
You're good bro. I've started 5 days ago, already now the rhythm part... just have to learn singing and three solos, so I guess I'll get it in a year or so...
Though this listen is not full but still it has to be definitly the best. Anyone can learn to play, the rhytem, lead and sing along as long one is dedicated to put in good amount of effort. Thank you,Rob for your genoristy for sharing this. I am glad to say I managed to learn the final solo as after listening to it for thousands of times lol
Thanx for the lesson . I've played for awhile now , and I think you are one of the best out there doing this . The layering is great . Awesome . I hope you can do this for awhile man . I believe that you can really help alot of struggling guitarist out there ...
you're awesome! I just can't believe that you bend and pull-off just like DG... now, I can learn step by step and hopefully I can play about 60% to what you're playing then I'll be happy... love your teaching techniques...Thanks so much!
Ok. I've been playing for 13 months now. I've learned this whole thing!!! I'm still a little sloppy with the second solo, but I can play it and keep up with my wife playing the melody. You're an incredible teacher. So that solo you play at the end of your demo....I want to learn it! I'm not sure where it came from (cause I dont think its from the original or the Pulse version), but it sounds really cool. Plus I can't find anyone teaching the final picking that Gilmore does in the song. Any chance you'll do a video to teach it??
I'd also love to learn the second solo of the original album version. You should teach that too! No one else is as clear or as accurate at teaching as you on TH-cam.
Damn, I wish you were around when I was learning how to play the guitar 30+ years ago, I am just a novice but man that is good. Thanks from an old man like me, 59 years young, now relearning how to play so I can teach my 16 year old as well.
Sounds like some serious dedication 😆. But in all seriousness, it’s important to know your limits when practicing. I recommend a little rubbing alcohol on the fingertips and in the future use Finger-ease to clean your strings.
You are very talented, Sir...you may not be famous worlwide but to us youtubers, you already are one of the great guitar teachers around...concise, well-explained and accurate lesson. Thanks so much...:)
i was diagnosed with schizophrenia 13 years ago. yet i am not completely at all out of this world like syd was. "funny" world. I knew this song for a long time but never knew it was for syd who went peanuts unfortunately. when i sing this song, there is a part of myself that sings it to myself. i ve crying a lot the first few times i listened to it recently knowing the meanings...

My wife doesn't usually comment on my playing, though i know she enjoys hearing me when i play (esp now that i can actually make music, lol.)
When i first listened to this video, where you were playing and singing, she heard it, and called out from the other room. She said, "You need to learn that song!". (Of course i answered, "Yes, i plan to!")
And i did!
I’m 61 and in my first year of learning Guitar… I aim to play this before i’m six foot down.. :)

One love!
Hello from Russia! I always dream study to play this song. Your style so cool and very near the original. Respect for you.
Its nice to hear a new voice on an old song. It works and its soothing .
patience is the key to success
Today's the first time I've seen one of your vids and I just learned that not only are you an excellent teacher but one seriously talented guitar player!
second solo begins at 19:10.
Adrian Massi thabk you so much

This is one of the best version i've ever seen about wish u were here
Think i could learn from you.
Thanks
I have to say buddy, this particular tutorial is by far the best I've watched.
It helped me break my bad playing habits to somewhat 50% better play.
Thank you very much, I've added this to my favourites 😃👍🎸🎸🎸
I've been slowly working my way through this video for three days. I'm not gonna lie this song has been a wild adventure for me, but now I'm going to practice singing it and this is all thanks to you!! thanks man be well and jam on.
This is the most perfect and easy to understand Wish You Were Here lesson that I've seen. Now I feel I have a chance to play it. Thank you.
💜 Your teaching! Ive always had issue with the solo part but now i am going to follow how you do it!! Thanks!
I haven't practised in awhile and i started back up with this and loving it! Thanks! 😊

You're good bro. I've started 5 days ago, already now the rhythm part... just have to learn singing and three solos, so I guess I'll get it in a year or so...
You are so amazing dude, wow. why aren't you famous?
Cass marry me

He is not famous because there are millions of people who can play this popular song
Yung Jamal so you must be tired
You play great ...I just started ..might take me 5 yrs to play like this...but I think this is the most real tutorial for the song.
WOW!! man, now that''s a lesson. Thanks Swifty!
Though this listen is not full but still it has to be definitly the best. Anyone can learn to play, the rhytem, lead and sing along as long one is dedicated to put in good amount of effort. Thank you,Rob for your genoristy for sharing this.

Who doesn't get high on Pink Floyd.
Very nice
Thanx for the lesson . I've played for awhile now , and I think you are one of the best out there doing this . The layering is great . Awesome . I hope you can do this for awhile man . I believe that you can really help alot of struggling guitarist out there ...
Hi, you play a third solo at about 4:10 on this video, but provided no tab for it. It's a gorgeous solo. Can you provide? Thanks!
you're awesome!
@@vancemowat7544 He does teach solo No.2 at 19:12.
@@Malc664 He plays a third solo as the song ends in his demo. This is what I'm referring to.
Damn, I wish you were around when I was learning how to play the guitar 30+ years ago, I am just a novice but man that is good. Thanks from an old man like me, 59 years young, now relearning how to play so I can teach my 16 year old as well.
Great job and great voice 👏
You are a beast sir!! Can't figure out how people can dislike your lesson.. 🙄🙄
my fingers are bleeding
Sounds like some serious dedication 😆. But in all seriousness, it’s important to know your limits when practicing. I recommend a little rubbing alcohol on the fingertips and in the future use Finger-ease to clean your strings.
swiftlessons thanks will do! Also great lesson ❤️
I HAVE BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS
That means you've been practicing a lot. That's a good thing.
Niceee✌️
You are very talented, Sir...you may not be famous worlwide but to us youtubers, you already are one of the great guitar teachers around...concise, well-explained and accurate lesson. Thanks so much...:)
That dog was sleeping so nicely 😊😊

@@f.f.8869 Sometimes songs and they're lyrics bring a flood of emotions and are attached to people and memories.
i was diagnosed with schizophrenia 13 years ago. yet i am not completely at all out of this world like syd was. "funny" world. I knew this song for a long time but never knew it was for syd who went peanuts unfortunately. when i sing this song, there is a part of myself that sings it to myself. i ve crying a lot the first few times i listened to it recently knowing the meanings...
Just stumbled up on this. Playing "wish you were here" 1st day. Joined for a year. Lessons any where else cost $50 /hr. this is VERY cost effective.
How didn't I find this channel sooner?
That's my cousin! I love you, cuz.
Blisters from the bends are REAL. Super mad b/c I can't really continue learning the solos...ring finger damn you....
Thank you for this break down. I’ve picked up guitar again after many years and your video has helped me out with learning one of the greats. 🤜🤙
My husband is learning how to play this, he was like "You could do the intro..." Me. Online. Find the intro...
