Gimour is the greatest rock guitarist ever. There may be others who are technically better, but none who can convey the emotion he does with his playing. So much of his work hits me in the ear, but strikes me in my soul.
The one thing that always amazes me about David Gilmore is how incredibly humble he is. It’s almost as if he has no idea how many people he has affected with his talents. I don’t admire many people but he is a hero to me.
@@smokeandkippers Very well said Sir! Although I have never met him, I have heard from others who have spent time with him (work related) and they all comment on his almost zen-like humility. For many high-achievers the humility is but an act, but for him it is apparently quite real. My guess is that he realizes that he was gifted with an extraordinary talent both emotionally and musically and that he was but the corporeal guardian of that gift. Sure he toiled long and hard to master his craft, but there was a spark from somewhere. I am far from a mystic, but good heavens that boy was given a gift!
The way gilmours eyes started to water when he started to sing. He feels the music just as much as anyone, and I hope he puts on one more last show cause I’d pay a fortune to see it 👌
I’m so glad I practiced playing that song trying to nail every note, every chord, slide and bend, because I can play that song as close as I possibly can to the great David Gilmour. It’s the most requested song in my family.
I am learning it now, cannot believe after all these yrs I am starting to get it. Not easy but made up my mind to learn it if it kills me and I am making great progress. Fun one but not easy at all.
Went to see Pink Floyd at the now demolished Earls Court. Loved every minute of it.. The journey down, the excitement, the couple of beers, before. The walk past the tee shirts because we couldn’t afford it. Sadly I’m 72 now but still a fan. Thank you David.
John - how did you keep from melting into a complete puddle at 4:56? Such an incredible privilege to get this private informal performance - thank you so much for sharing it. David Gilmour seems like a genuine and down-to-earth soul. He's taken remarkable care of his voice and guitar playing over the years - very inspiring to see someone age as gracefully as he has. Your channel and interviews are phenomenal, thanks again for sharing!
You can see it in his eyes he still feels it like it’s the first time he played it. Fucking legend and I wish I could have seen him live. Gilmour you are on the top 👌
Iconic. When I was a child in the early 80s and knew nothing about the band itself, I always envisioned their music travelling from a distant point in outer space where the gods dwelt; or an obscure group of shadows massive as Saturn drifting past the stars creating tonal ether. But alas, human magic.
I used to go by his place all the time on the river and thought it was some restaurant that never seemed to be open....... had I known I would have bowed my head each time I went by, in homage .
This is REMARKABLE to watch. I mean really moving. To say nothing of the fact that he plays these guitar parts so flawlessly after all these years, to see David break into the vocals, sing them so beautfully, & yet stop as though something wasn't quite right......... It is something so beautifully melancholic, to be so capable as a singer after all your years Dave, & yet to know in your heart that the very best, the peak, is behind you. You are a living legend Dave Gilmour.
David your the best.i have a martin GPC x2e. im learning to play this song.i play almost every day.i Grew up listening to your music. I had the album with the triangle hanging up on my wall in My room. The Dark Side Of,The Moon when I was younger. I'm almost 60 now. I love your music. Keep rocking dave.
Very moving, such a beautiful song brings back so many memories. Feel very privileged to have been around long enough to remember hearing it in my teens.
It's so amazing that a simple thing such as a few lyrics and chords can withstand the rigors of time and still elicit so many different feelings to so many different people....truly a musical treasure and masterpiece.
Its a treat watching the legend play the 12 string. He plays it straight from the heart and that makes it priceless..How I wish I could watch their live show.. unfortunately they never have ever travelled to India !
Absolute legend this guy.. I can sort of play that song on my acoustic but boy do I wish I could play it like that.. Quite stunning to see him play those 2 guitars again.
godddammit it's so touching in its simplicity and his voice is so rich with honest emotion...it's also kind of "sparse", just as his genious simple yet brilliant way of playing guitar...this song always gets to me. Thank you so much for sharing, great footage !
So great,Mr Gilmour 😊
Sir, David Gilmore, is the Master, now and forever. God gave him a special talent. This wonderful gift has brought such Joy. I am in awe each and every time I listen. I was born in 59, and greatful to Artists like David Gilmore. There is no music that compares to the beautifully created music he has shared with the World. Thank you, David Gilmore !!. I feel honored to listen to any performance that you present. Karen Byrd, Elkin, NC , USA ❤
Just like Jimi,Eric,Carlos,Prince,Kurt,J.Marvin etc etc You've touched the deep down of my soul David!!!very good guitar skills thank you thank you soooooo much for this beauty song
It's pretty easy to play, Bryan. Do you have a guitar? Thanks to this video I just learned that the opening notes are all happening within the G shape chord on the bottom 3 strings and also on the open 4th string for that one highest note of that little melodic part (watch his index finger play it), all the while he is always strumming the top 3 strings of the G chord to make that repeating chordal sound that is the background chord that doesn't change. Then the rest of the song is G, then to the C on "So, so you think you can..., then to the D chord on "tell", A minor on "heaven from hell", then back to G on "blue skies from pain", to D on "can you tell a green field from cold steel rail", A minor, back to G again and then it all repeats. So its a I-IV-V-vi-I-V-vi-I progression in G major. And it sounds just like the studio recording if you have a 12 string guitar (which I don't)! :) How strange that this video was uploaded 17 hours before I searched it out to learn how to play the song. I had seen it on here long ago (I think) and came back to review it again. THANK YOU SIR for providing this resource! I appreciate it!
LOVE this sooo much, do more! i'm 4 years into learning guitar, a huge FLOYD fan and learned this song, but to watch his nuances playing seeing up close is wonderful
In my mid 50s and I’m about 2 1/2 years in to play guitar and I can play this one straight through sing the whole thing. It’s a great song to learn and super great for beginners ….David Gilmores afreaking genius.
One of the greatest musical geniuses of our time ..thank you for giving the world some of the best music ever created and for me personally, hours of pure joy listening to it..very often in tears..
Vaguely right!! Must be amazing knowing, but not really caring, that everyone seeing you play thinks you are a bloody genius and would drive all day to see you practice!
He got a bit emotional at around 5:25 and you can clearly tell that song means the world to him, like the rest of their music. That kind of upset me a bit as his voice had risen as in to cry, and you could see it in his eyes. Sterling bloke
Lost one of my dearest friends this year. This song reminds me of all the people I’ve lost. I spend every day of my life holding it together for my family, but this song in particular reminds me that it’s okay to sometimes fall apart for awhile and really miss the ones that have passed on.

hearing classic amazing songs like this makes me feel sad for the shit that kids have to listen to today, i only hope they have parents or grandparents to show them what music really can be
Back in 1982....returning with body injuries, from the Fuc .land war...took me 4 year to recovery motricity and still today , for the human misery i did watched.....the part saying...." Did you exchange,...a walk on part in the war, For a lead role in a cage...."...rain from my eyes, for all those who fall.....Alberto.
David's question at 3:06 reveals - to me at least - how he achieved this song's famous string bends on an acoustic. They're very hard using a WOUND g-string. However, switching to an UNWOUND g-string they suddenly become much easier. Thanks for making this video for that gem alone.
I been playing this song on my 6 string for years and finally picked up a second hand 12 string this past weekend and can’t stop playing this song. My favorite song to play. And yes when I get to that C chord I can’t help but start singing it too.
The sad thing is I'm 38 years old and I've only just discovered Pink Floyd about a month ago. I love them, even bought my first acoustic guitar a couple of days ago to learn so I can play their songs.
Hey good luck! It's never too late to learn. I started playing guitar almost 4 years ago, I'm 51 now. I learned how to play this song during that time. Nowhere near as good as Gilmour, of course, but if you keep at it I'm sure you can play it too.
I'm 64 learnt to play the acoustic couple of years ago and being a huge Floyd fan since my early teens was keen to learn wish you were here... I adore playing it but boy I wish I could play it like that genius.. Gilmour for me is one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar.. Pure musical genius.
This isn’t sad, this is wonderful! I’m 42 and have been playing for 2 years, and honestly it’s the great discovery of my adult life. All the best on your journey!
Cool man, it's never too late. I started playing in 1970 at age 14, it was such an awesome time of amazing music to enjoy and learn from, all unfolding in real time!

I love DG. He talks like a university professor but dresses like a plumber, then rips out the most iconic guitar riffs like they're nothing. Love 'im.
My plumber does not wear a sport coat nor does he reside in a river boat! Sir I must know more!
Plumber? Last I checked they don’t wear a sport jacket. 🤔
Think he was talking on stage but, tshirt jeans and VERY expensive shoes.@@rtothec1234
Great comment 😀
Couldn't help crying when he started to sing...
Drink up bud
Because he’s so bad
Maybe you should get some counseling for that. 😅

Give it a rest Gilmore
God has blessed this man with talent beyond belief, may he live many more healthy years.
Yes, yes, may your invisible friend in the sky smile upon him!!
Many ears ago when I was a kid I spent a whole afternoon learning the opening acoustic solo and here I am again aged 70 still fooling around with it.
I wish you all the best 😊 I'm 34, heard this masterpiece when I was 6, still fond of it .

Well put. Now shut up.
Easy
David Gilmour can do more with one note than most of todays shredder’s can do with an entire fretboard… Dave Mustaine 😮
I will never get tired of watching David Gilmour play a guitar. It's up there with sunsets and starling murmurations. Simply mesmerising.
The one thing that always amazes me about David Gilmore is how incredibly humble he is. It’s almost as if he has no idea how many people he has affected with his talents. I don’t admire many people but he is a hero to me.

I love this song. I find it difficult to play without tearing up for people I miss.
I could watch this stuff for hours. Mesmerising.
Looked like he had a tear in his eye. I can't even imagine the memories he has from this song.. 🤔👍

Wow. Seeing all that emotion still there after all these years with that tune is good, and hard, to watch. At the same time.
Someone once said that no one is perfect. Clearly, they never experienced David Gilmour.
With all due respect to the others, this is Pink Floyd…the heart, the soul, the emotion.
Legendary song
