Gorgeous location and beautiful images. Another youtuber, I forget who, said that anyone can capture great images at sunrise and sunset. However the real challenge is to capture great landscapes during the day when the lighting is harsh, the shadows are shorter and the dynamic range is fairly wide. I think you have demonstrated this perfectly. And had a great time doing it. Thank you for sharing.

Hello Gary. I just wanted to say that you have inspired me to get out more with my camera. Haven’t got an all singing and dancing set up. But I’m
Loving the long exposure photography. Thank you for the great videos. And one day il be as good as you haha. Once again thanks. Keep up the good work. Loving your channel 👍🏼. All the best Sean.

Hi Sean, I’m so glad I’ve inspired you to get out and give long exposures a go. It doesn’t matter about the kit. It’s about learning the technique and more importantly, getting out.
      Cheers xx

The shot you took in the water was way cool! RISKY, sure, worth it... ABSOLUTELY!
So this is a great point about LOOKING for the best shot... use your legs
... LOL! Also great to point out the best time of the day is not always THE GOLDEN HOUR!
CRACKIN points and liking your enthusiasm for the journey AND destination! :)

Lovely! I liked the shots - rather better than 6/10 I'd say - and that last shot of the day was a real winner.
(Btw I kept expecting that music to break into Elvis' 'Suspicious Minds'...). Good one , Gary, a real morale raiser.

Hi Gary. Like the video and loving the place but you're actually at Crummock water and Buttermere is slightly further to the East which is why you couldn't find the lone tree. Just another excuse to revisit. I might catch your there!

James Burns - really? Oh lol. I set my sat nav to the car park at Buttermere car park too, strange and damn too. Thanks for correcting me, doh! Like you said it's another excuse for another visit. Crummock Water, I'll go look it up, it sounds like a fantastic place lol. Cheers

Gary, I just subscribed yesterday thanks to a coincidence - your vlog recommended by TH-cam and I love it since then.
Your work is amazing, love the scene, comments and mainly your pictures. I wish I could be there with you to take these lovely images. Also you are the first one not to shooting only one hour in the morning and evening, but enjoying the whole day.
Just wanted to say THANKS and have a good light;-)

  • @SiWootton

Enjoyed that. I feel exactly the same. Getting out comes far and away before getting an image. I would sit watching the telly if it wasn't for the lure of the next image. I love seeing new places too and as you get more interested you tend to walk further and benefit more both physically and emotionally. There is also a chance of some great light and an award winning image too but that is secondary.
Keep the vlogs coming they are getting better and better, just keep those legs away next time!

All to often the message photographers give off is Sunrise or Sunset and ignore the rest of the time in between. As we both know, it's not always feasible to shoot at those times either.

Gary Gough I was at Buttermere last month. The famous lone tree is at the northern end. It was fenced off (and no entry) from April to September as Sandpiper birds are nesting in the roots of the trees. I think that's every year too. Looked from the video you where on the eastern side of the lake. Buttermere is as classy place. Loads of compositions in every direction. Keep up the good work. 👍👍👍

Wow Gary... I have to agree with the many comments on this & you of coarse, just get out there, enjoy yourself, shoot the shots! Considering the harsh light you were dealing with, not half shabby! The 10 stopper & .9 grad on the sky made about the best you could could get or expect to get in either case. Showing the viewers the LCD display after the shot was taken, ( JPEG ) tells me the RAW in post will process out even nicer! Award winning, no, I agree, but worth taking the picture nevertheless...
Thank you so much for sharing the experience...

Great vlog, Gary and as always, very inspiring, motivating with great shots, really beautiful. I watch your vlogs with great pleasure. I'd like to ask you a question. When you set up your shots, what do you focus on? Do you set the focus on infinity on landscapes and then switch off the lens stabilization and autofocus? Most importantly I'd like to know how and what do you focus on. Thank you.

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  7 ปีที่แล้ว

D X - hi again, great comments, thank you. Re the focus... I always focus a third of the way into the image unless I have a strong subject in the foreground. I then turn my focus on the lens to manual so it doesn't move and I always turn my stabilisation off. I'll cover it a bit more in the next video. Hope that helps.

Great video Gary. I like your attitude towards taking pukka photo's, not following the common mindset that great images can only be captured at sunrise/sunset! Subscribed!!

Cracking vlog as always and great images. I'm visiting the UK from Australia next year and the family are returning early so I can have a dedicated week for photography. I was thinking Skye but now I'm leaning towards the Lake District.

Great, great day-time shots - so nice to see such wonderful images in supposedly "bad" conditions - I find it refreshing to see! There are sooo many sunrise/sunset images out there it almost gets over-done........and I have no desire to get up a silly o clock for a few minutes of picture taking!!

Totally agree 👍🏻. Having said that, my next next shoot is a sunrise shoot on Wednesday. I feel bad now :)

The shot with the little boat in the foreground, I have seen that taken as a black and white image by a youtuber named E6Vlogs. He like you Gary shoots some great images. Keep making the videos, and keep inspiring us. I had similar light at the "Valley of the Rocks" on Exmoor on thurs. The images are ok but not award winning. Many thanks Nicky

Thanks for this video and showing that great images are possible mid-day! Your enthusiasm is contagious! I wanna get out there too. Will need to invest in a 6 or 10 stop filter first. I only have a couple ND grads and circular polarizer.

So refreshing to see someone using "normal" daylight hours to get stunning images! Well done for bucking the trend of "it's only possible to get good landscapes at sunrise or sunset" and showing what can be done with some side-lighting out in the open - not many "youtuber" pros are doing this from what I have seen so far - great to see.

Great to see your enthusiasm Gary, and so nice to see you out there just enjoying the day.
I admit I've been lacking enthusiasm for getting up at 0: dark 30 to find a nice sunrise. It just goes to show that with the right prep and planning you can find good locations on scouting days.
Cheers mate, I love your shots and infectious enthusiasm.

Great images Gary and great video. Not everyone can get up or out for sunrise and sunset, and I think that some of those photographers don't get out because they have had it drummed into their heads that you can only get good images at those times, are the images going to award winners maybe not but you never know, but not everyone is out there to win awards or competitions, I know I'm not I just like to get out and take images, if I get a really good one I'll get it printed and put on my wall, that's reward enough. Well you have just proved that you can get great images outside those sunrise and sunset times. Great work.👍👍👍
