Jeep Renegade/ Fiat 500 Ambient Temp Fix for Under $10

  • In this video I show you set by step how to fix a broken ambient temperature sensor in a Jeep Renegade in under 30 minutes for less than $10. This fix likely also works for several other Jeep and Fiat vehicles. In the Renegade when the ambient temp sensor is not working it throws a check engine code that will cause you to fail inspection as well as disables the climate control, remote start, and 4WD. The dealer will charge over $500 to fix this but you can easily do it for less than $10 with parts available online.
Update- Everyone kept asking so the link to order the part is below! Please use this link when you order as I will get a small percentage (your cost doesn't change) which will allow me to make more of these how-to videos. Thank you for your kind words and support!

Hello from Lancashire in northern England. My wife had exactly the same problem. Jeep dealership wanted £180 +labour to fit a new wing mirror. As a result of your video, I purchased a pack of thermistors(only 5% and not 10% as you showed). hardest part was releasing clips but I followed your video to the letter. The engine light still stayed on but today it cleared itself (four days later)and everything is back to normal. Thank you for making this video from my wife and myself.

Thank you so much. I just got back from my dealer .. have your problem. They gave me an estimate of $1000.., I told them no.. came home and found your video. I just ordered the thermistor from Amazon. I bought 4 cars from this dealer. No more. Coincidentally. Our 2015 Renegade Trailhawk is your color with the black hood too. 😊 It’s been a good vehicle. But it’s getting replaced by Bronco Raptor that’s being built as we speak. Thanks again.

Many thanks from Scotland. Took me an hour and lots of swearing but fixed in the end. Getting the cover off was a bitch....I couldn't source the recommended thermistor in the UK , so used a MF52-103 with 5% tolerance. has worked perfectly since installing three weeks ago and travelling over a 1000 miles. Top man!!!

I just followed your instructions and it worked perfectly. You da man! On a side note, I did mine in daylight and think you may have been on to something doing it at night. My 72 yr old eyes were having a buggar of a time seeing inside the mirror with my little head beam because of too much ambient light.. The hardest part was getting the top mirror cap off. If I had to do it again I’d do it at night too. You had it all right. 😀

Awesome - Followed you step by step and now I have my remote start and 4x4 back. Had to wait for the weather to warm up a bit, I figured -27c (-14f) was a little too low and the plastic would be too brittle. It was only -12c (10F) so took the risk. At these temperatures I so missed the remote start.

Great fix - although quirky it is a very important feature that the coolant, oil and ambient air all correlate. This was the case with an Alfa (same DNA)I picked up from Spain which had a faulty thermostat.
The problem with fully loaded good value vehicles is that components like this will be the cheapest available....and many are from China as we found out when supplies dried up with the covid shut downs.
    - one thought- I wonder if conductive thermal paste would be more responsive than hot glue? Maybe hot glue insulating it is better as it takes out peaks
Anyway it’s always good to see practical repairs

Timing is everything. This is an issue on my 2015 as well. However mine was reading about 20 degrees lower until winter hit. Then it began to read correctly until 3-4 days ago when the weather warmed up a bit. Now it reads dashes and the CEL is on again. I have a Chrysler warranty but $10 thermistor vs $100 deductible. I just have to wait another week ort two since Amazon doesn't have in stock at the moment. Thanks for the video!! I had read this fix once or twice, but it helps to see it done. And I wholeheartedly agree. Quirky vehicle. I love the Jeep, but it is quirky. We passed our last car down to our daughter. I would never feel comfortable giving her this.

The reason the engine warning light turns out is it "thinks" the temperature sensor of the engine thermostat is faulty. It meassures the difference in temperature between the ambient temp and the thermostat and reports a fault code for the thermostat temp sensor. This is a logic error in their programming for the fault codes. A lot of those in modern vehicles. I broke the mirror glass when I changed the thermistor. Still better than the $500 complete mirror.

My wife's 2015 Trailhawk has been intermittent --- or accurate temp for about a month now. I have been resetting the 0073 code with my reader and it lasts a day or so and then gives the check engine light again. I am in VT and we had a 10 inch snowfall and the car would not go into 4wd. We run studded snows so it was not a huge deal but was an annoyance. What if you were out on a trail or in deep snow and the sensor decided to quit? Thanks for this video. I bought an intake air sensor already and will let you know if that is the same thermistor rating as the ones you bought. Enjoy the baby.

I got bigger tires after I made this video and mine went down to 23.

Guess I'm the only one who can't get the damn clips off. I lift them up but they just lay back down onto the latch. I can't jimmy them in a way that they pop off.

I finally got this job done. Turns out I hadn't cursed at it enough times yet. I did this fix on a Fiat 500x using this video. The 500x and the Renegade share the same frame and several elements. The clips were a bit different and somewhat difficult to do though. Ended up taking two people. 1 person to lift both clips at the same time while the other gentley separates the case from the mirrior motor housing. I got those off just to learn that there are clips on the back. One refused to come out without almost breaking it. Turns out you have to spin and turn the case a certain way and walk it off in a certain motion. It feels stuck and unmoving otherwise.
Definitely some differences but you can fix a 500x using this video. Thanks!
