    Spent some time when I was younger with my Grandmother. She ran the care home in a city in South Wales and whenever I went to stay over hers I'd stay in her apartment in the complex itself. Spent many mornings chatting to folks over cups of tea and biscuits, made an effort to get to know the folks living their final days there. These visits happened maybe 3 times a year at most.
    One of the Residents was a fellow named Arnold. Arnold had been there since I was a glint in my father's eye and when I was old enough to start understanding history, I got to know him.
    Arnold was a veteran of the second World War and had served in a company comprised of several Welsh soldiers, and had served in Africa, and Europe, earning many medals for his service. As we drank tea and ate biscuits the man discussed all kinds of things, his thoughts on the world around him and how grateful he was to have seen it, his faith and beliefs. When I got older he took me to his room at the complex and told me about his medals. Each one he could name and place, and he described HIS war to me as he had seen it. I spent maybe 7 hours in that room talking with the man and for all the world I wish I'd had a hundred more to talk with him, but eventually my grandmother found me and scolded for pestering the residents. Arnold smoothed it all over, and bade me farewell, giving me a coat he'd owned that I was too small for. He said "You'll grow into it"
    Well, I did, that year I finished primary school and moved onto secondary school, and when I next visited, Arnold had gone.
    Not sure why this video brings this memory to my mind so strongly. Maybe its the lack of sleep or the hour of the night, but I'm glad 4chan and reddit took the time to send this old soldier some cards. Im glad someone made a TH-cam video about it too. A brilliant story. Im glad I got to speak to people like Arnold, before he and those like him passed away.

    • @ApolloTheDerg
      @ApolloTheDerg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Honestly I think if kids these days and even young adults spent more time talking to people like Arnold we would be in a better place. There is so much tribalism and fighting online over things some of these older folks dealt with in person and I feel we have a disconnect from that. Also I’m sure Arnold was really happy to have a friend to chat with, I know in many homes just being able to share some life experiences and story is a lot better than living out the years forgotten in a sense. Thank you for sharing this, even if it’s not detail rich Arnold leaves a legacy that’s not forgotten, and you play a role in that.

    • @joshsandford2264
      @joshsandford2264 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@joshsandford2264 I sure hope I did. Its such a distant memory now. The timing is confused among a whole lot of growing up, but writing from 2021, I can still picture the evening clear as day. I still wear that old coat, its kept me warm on cold days and brought me a lot of happiness. In some small way, Arnold never really left did he? So long as the jacket and the memory are alive, I'll carry him with me.
      To horrifically paraphrase "Cities of the Plain" - Cormac Mcarthy"
      Arnold was that man, who is all men, who stands on the Dock for me. I heard his story. I loved that man, and when the time comes, I will take his place, and when I do, i hope I'll have my own stories to tell.

I had a great grandma who lived until she was around 96 or 98, can't remember too well, but she lived up until just 2 years ago, January 2021. She lived a long, happy life.

    Fucking hell this one hit hard for me. My great grandpa Charles Lovaglio had a nearly identical situation (minus 4chan obviously). He was a super sweet man, he always called me his best friend despite the fact that I only got to see him maybe 2-3 times a year, and was a WWII vet who turned 90 in 2010. His wife had been dead for about 15 years and according to my family it took an extremely heavy toll on him but after I was born (being his first great grandchild) he started to improve significantly.
    For his 90th birthday we threw him a massive party and had every single one of his living family members come down to Florida. I didn't really understand it at the time but I had never seen someone as happy as he was that day, and that's saying a lot because whenever I saw him he was always happy. Anyways, not even a year after his party his health started to dwindle rapidly and he had to be moved from the home he had built with his wife and into an assisted living home. He passed away in 2013 surrounded by his family after he had heart complications. I wasn't able to be there and to this day part of me regrets not going (I was afraid of seeing someone die) but I was able to say goodbye to him and told him that I'll always be his best friend.

    My grandpa was a ww2 veteran too and he lived his 95 years in great pride for his service. At 80, he would ride his rusty old bike everyday to attend the veteran meetings, to the beehives all the way to another village to come home with honeycombs so he could make us natural healthy honey, and to my school everyday to take me home. At 90, he couldn't walk without his cane, still he was a stubborn old man and he still insisted and kept on going to the veteran meetings because he considered his service his one prideful achievement in life. He kept that up till he turned 94. The last 2 years with him were painful, but we still celebrated his birthday with all his veteran colleagues and friends, we still brought him to all of our celebrations in town and we still went with him to our national day's parade. At his funeral, aprox. 20 shots were fired in his honor, at the heroes' cemetery. It was as much beautiful ceremony as tragic. Rest in peace General Dumitru Radu, gramps.

      @@maxquacks Since no one’s answered you just yet, I can offer a small paraphrased explanation! There was a random guy named Josh who sent multiple other people named Josh a group message over Facebook saying that he would host a battle to decide the “one and true Josh” on a specific date, I believe sometime summer(?) last year 2021. Over the year or so leading up to the date, more and more people caught wind of it until it was several hundred people who showed up to the Josh Fight with pool noodles and foam weapons and cameras to livestream. I only caught wind of it as it was being blogged on Twitter, but the winner ended up being a five-year-old boy, obviously also named Josh, who got a crown and was carried around on people’s shoulders getting declared the one true Josh. A very hilariously wholesome story!

    4Chan did it because 4Chan loves reactions.
    Positive, negative, it matters not.
    This is why 4Chan is true chaotic neutral.
    Reddit only did it for narcissistic reasons and to appear "Morally superior" to 4Chan though.

    I was there on /b/ when this thread popped up, and I sent a card to Mr. Lashua as well. The response from /b/ of all places was really unexpected and honestly heartwarming. I still get an email notification every year reminding me to send him a birthday card, even after his passing.

    4chan is a place where people have found terrorists, identified criminals, tracked down a flag with no clues
    And they do something as wholesome as this
    They are good bros

      For me,4chan is bipolar. At one side,they doxx people that they don't like and do weird things but on the other hand,they tracked isis and told russian forces to bomb them and they did this which is very wholesome
