A lot. A lot is wrong with the legal system. They’ll defend pedos/preds and give them low sentences, but when someone “threatens” them ( makes them less likely to earn money from academic paywalls ), they throw a fit. It’s insane.
If he was downloading hundreds of text books with a substantial "dollar value" the textbook price would have been taken into consideration when sentencing, so if he has obtained potentially hundreds of thousand of dollars worth of books that would be a much harsher sentence and a federal crime than if he stole $1000 worth of books. The repository the books are held on is likely a governmental branch too so there's hacking into a government run database on top of all the other charges. It's unlikely he would have gotten 50 years, when the feds go after someone they throw everything they can at them and at least one charge lands. It makes it seem much worse than it is. Look at FPSRussia, they had dozens of charges on him, all he got done for in the end was having some weed. But that charge still fucked him over majorly, cause it as a federal charge.
An update on the last case for those curious, stabbed his girlfriend 47 times with two different knives. 3 times with a seated one that got bent and then 44 more with a different knife. He for sure deserved that guilty verdict he got

With Swartz, it's always been more about how the school didn't want people to be allowed to freely view the academic journals, books, etc. without playing the ransom that is the fees that grant you access at most universities; it was easier to throw the book at him.

That's what I imainge a lot of what Swartz was downloading was, reports, sources things that Universities likes to keep since at the end of the day, that's really all they are providing to student besides a fancy piece of paper.

If he was downloading hundreds of text books with a substantial "dollar value" the textbook price would have been taken into consideration when sentencing, so if he has obtained potentially hundreds of thousand of dollars worth of books that would be a much harsher sentence and a federal crime than if he stole $1000 worth of books. The repository the books are held on is likely a governmental branch too so there's hacking into a government run database on top of all the other charges.
It's unlikely he would have gotten 50 years, when the feds go after someone they throw everything they can at them and at least one charge lands. It makes it seem much worse than it is. Look at FPSRussia, they had dozens of charges on him, all he got done for in the end was having some weed. But that charge still fucked him over majorly, cause it as a federal charge.
Dude didn't kill himself; he was 100% ready to fight it.
An update on the last case for those curious, stabbed his girlfriend 47 times with two different knives. 3 times with a seated one that got bent and then 44 more with a different knife. He for sure deserved that guilty verdict he got

That's why they tried to scrub him from the site several times over. I remember it being a big deal around 2017-2019 that the admins were trying to remove all mention or reference to him from the site since he effectively believed in pure, unfiltered free speech, something that goes pretty heavily against what Reddit believes

There's a great documentary on Swartz called "The Internet’s Own Boy". I remember crying during it. He sought to make the world just a little fairer, to give the commoner a chance.

I grew up in Garland, Texas and went to the high school essentially connected to the Curtis Culwell Center. The attack happened on a Sunday, and my friend's dad (and later my coworker) was the cop to kill the two suspects before they could get inside. We had to go to school the following morning, and they tried to act like nothing was happening. That school has one window and it overlooked the shared parking lot and we could see all the FBI vans and little yellow number cards. The bodies were still out there until noon that day. My mom yelled at me when I told her I wanted to go home and I was scared.

If you read the texts between them it is clear that she moved on and didnt want anything to do with him. Obviously his story didnt go down like that in real life. He probably went over to her house to try to win her back and she told him she hooked up with another guy and he freaked out and stabbed her to death. With Swartz, it's always been more about how the school didn't want people to be allowed to freely view the academic journals, books, etc. without playing the ransom that is the fees that grant you access at most universities; it was easier to throw the book at him.

That's what I imainge a lot of what Swartz was downloading was, reports, sources things that Universities likes to keep since at the end of the day, that's really all they are providing to student besides a fancy piece of paper.
