Doc when you mentioned Welch drywall in the late 70s I also worked for them into the early 80s this is where I remember you from also Dritex in the 80syou must recall joe labelle his favorite saying was I’ve got a real cream puff for you! The puffs were rarely scrapped out which did not make my father and I too happy. I think the rate was around 7cents. We eventually found out thru the hangers that were getting shorted on the board count that was a deal breaker, naturally.urban legend has it that a young disgruntled taper mixed a bucket or duro 20 and filled the gun pump and rest of tools with that hot mud. I guess back in the day drywallers didn’t put up with too much bs.

So awesome bucket walking. Been doing that 25+ yrs and never seen anyone else do It. People always comment on how dangerous it is.. Blah blah. It works great and once u get used to it, it's an awesome way to get quick things touched up
You're my absolute favourite drywall teacher (and your tips have made me some decent cash now that I use flat boxes). I gotta say, though, the best part of this video is the way you say "baaahx" - you remind me of Christopher Walken :)
I beleive that Iam a reallly good taper, and I also notice a good taper when I see it and you are really good at what you do, I learn lots of tricks watching your videos. Lol, most of the guys I work with have no idea what they are doing but is normal, and the best part is that they are all techers/ and what I call preachers of the trade, but no one knows what they are doing just an idea. I appreciate someone that knows what they are doing. Their mistake is that they dont go around adn work with different people so they think that what they are doing and their system is the best nothing I can say about that. Respect to your skills.
That observation applies to more than just the trades. There are many fields where poorly trained/low skill people act like they are experts and pass along incomplete or inaccurate information. This guy obviously knows his trade.
Clever on the headers.... i once did a job where i was forced to get done extreemely fast and floated actual "But joints" out in a 2coat system but it was w/popcorn. I believe the system was to hand coat the deep side(after the 1st coat was done) w/1swipe....amazing just how fast one can be if he has to be. The situation was that moisture had to be out of the house & therefore the taping and texturing done, so the flooring guys could utilize the warantee...they were able to measure the humidity...ithink it had to be 17% or lower otherwise they had to be rescheduled, we got it done on time along with popcorn landing in the freshly mudded final coat...it should hav been made a video for youtube. TH-cam didn't exist bak den, lol
Could you possibly create a video that includes maintenace work on the flat boxes such as replacing springs, how to spot wear and tear, or how to replace/calibrate your blade. A maintenance video an autometic taper (bazooka) would be great also, replacing the blade or how to spot wear tear or replacing the chain. Thank you!
Here’s a tip when you are boxing...always try to stop at a joint when running your flats ,that way when you sand to run second coat you can sand all your box marks together in the same spot.. and not have to walk more than what you have too
I finished a 30 by 40 house by hand with 8 ft ceilings. And the guys that did the drywall didn’t care lots of unnecessary butt joints screws at angles and uneven ceilings, the but joints were 4 foot wide in places to hide them. I wish I had the boxes to help. I used buckets to stand on lol

Not good avoiding a lid on the bucket. Your going to have foot problems later without it. Viewers, be mindful to load the bucket with something of weight in it and use a lid. He's experienced with what only works well for him. Other than that, the lesson is spot on mud application techniques.
You get the back pain because of that extension handle it puts a lot of stress on your arms so thats why you need a full handle that is slimer and not thick
With experience come knowledge. You have both. Tapers get paid to finish every in of drywall unless directed no to. Try not to use the bucket too much, stuff do happen. Anyway great looking job. Finisher to Finisher
I see the the Electrical Contractor made it easier for you to finish topping. That mud looks effortless to push though your box... Is it a Ultra light weight compound?
I mostly board now, but when i taped i found its easier just to coat the butts by hand . Why run the box only to go back over it with your hand tools? Great job btw

I was wondering if you could tell me how much water you would put into a full bucket of all purpose USG Drywall compound before you box off your seams. I just bought a pump, a 10 inch box, and a 12 inch box. the thickness of the mud that I'm using I believe might be too thick because I have to press so hard on the box to get the mud to come out smoothly, but officially I was told no more than a pint of water at a time, and that certainly doesn't seem thin enough. Could you clarify how much you use Please, thank you so much!
I've been renovating historic houses in NYC for thirty-five years, and am new to the world of flat boxes. Can I get by with a Columbia 10" flat box and a mud pump? It seems to me corner joints are easy enough to do by hand with a 6" knife. Another question I have, standard USG mud from Home Depot, does one have to thin down that mix with water to successfully use a flat box and pump? Thanks a lot!

Up front cost of the tools is expensive, but it you take care of them they last for years. Case in point, I bought my first personal set in 2008, other than maintenance, they're still going strong after 12 years and probably ~20,000 sheets/yr
do you add anything to the mix to avoid not having someone wipe in back of You? ive heard of adding dawn dish soap but I would hate to loose potential clients if it affects the mud in a negative way

Quick Question, did you tape and coat the corners in one day, or did you tape the corners and top them in one day, and then tape the butts & flats in one day and coat them? thus separate days? If you put your mud on a bench you dont have to bend over. Holy shit man. I must be mixing mud too hard. I have to really press on the box to push mud out. I'll try making it softer. Thanks for the vid doc
Hi doc,iam having a problem with my joint boxes leaving lines/groves either side of the joint.ive tried adjusting the blade and tension.its still doing it.any suggestions.thanks
Was it a new blade? if so make sure it was put in correctly and the brass was really clean before you put it in sometimes mud Gets behind there and pushes the blade out. Otherwise just keep playing with it. bring the blades in and out until it's stops

How tall are you ? I'm a 6'5" taper and can touch an 8' lid with my palm standing flat footed , so I guess since I'm not a good basketball player , I've found my dream job !
Kim Conrad if your tall and thin like I was dont do this job to long if all you do is taping that's fine bit if your fixing especially fire rated ceilings your in for a life time of back injuries especially if your Co workers are shorter
You started out quite good and then it just went bad you don't need to use a paddle or a knife after using the boxes they are a finishing tool you've used them as an applicator which saves you nothing really how you end up with a good joint I don't know Tim Wagga plaster works

Hey Ray what is your order of process with automatic tools i.e. after bedding in the tape which order do you top in ? corners flats butts???
Use a half size of Dawn dish soap and it won’t make that happen or thin down your mud
If I was searching for the tool that you are using to apply the mud, what search term would I use?

Make sure your tape is dry when you coat it or you will have alot of touch up.
The only person that came close to your act was Hendrix when he was playing behind his head and picking with his teeth.
What type of compound are you using with the box. I noticed it's a yellow color and not bright white like regular compound?

The Drywall Doctor yes i want cover the tape in the first coat so in what level i need to put my flat box and if the same level will work in the second coat
I dont really have any experience working with flat boxes

Good grief be careful on those buckets !!! I have plaster scaffolding that adjusts and is a lot safer. But then OSHA outlawed them too. I also agree finish it all !!!
