There is no way McLaren would have allowed Piastri and Norris to race to the finish - The risk of them crashing into each other and losing the 1~2 for the team was just too high! In the last few laps of the race, Norris was told to back off from Piastri, in part to secure the 1~2 finish, and also to stop Norris demonstrating to the World that he was the much faster driver of the two!
@ColinUtd Possibly or Mclaren would have given orders to Lando to maintain position so as not to risk the 1-2. They have done it before with Ricciardo and Lando at Monza, maybe that was on Lando's mind and is why he was reluctant to give up the position.
Oscar went off the track and had a terrible stint . You have to win the race on merit not because your are in first after turn one! This isn’t charity event. We have a championship on the line and max is taking a ten place grid penalty so it doesn’t make any sense period.
Glad Ralf has officially announced his status. If anything his overall appeal has got better by his doing so. Glad you guys have always backed him 100%
Am I the only one that thinks that Piastri would’ve won that race quite easily if he was allowed to pet first on both occasions?, , He got two 4 1/2 seconds in front made a slight error, but then still maintain a two second gap. The only reason, Lando pulled a five second gap at the end was there was like traffic, and Piastri was waiting to swap positions without taking risks
Good comment...I also feel Piastri and Lando were to drive to their "numbers"..engines turned down etc ..powrplant,etc considering the penalties once you've used your allocation.
I feel that McLaren is just not prepared for a double stack. They could've done it in Hungary and Silverstone for maximum points for the team but they didn't.
Piastri was over 5 seconds behind and couldn't close the gap, even when Lando was holding back. This was the dumbest and most counterproductive decision the team could have made. A real team order that's in the best interest of both the team and drivers championship would have been, "no matter what, if we're running 1-2, Lando finishes first." None of this, whoever leads after turn one, nonsense. Lando is the #1 driver, and he was clearly faster than Oscar. End of discussion. McLaren made a stupid mistake that has only pissed off their #1 driver, and given Oscar a half assed first victory he didn't earn, and will not cherish like the memory of a victory should warrant. Nothing good can come of it. Sheer stupidity.
@@maxmoser412 I don’t think you’re getting the point mate. It wouldn’t have got to that position if the tree was allowed to pay first like most people leading the race it’s not rocket science mate.
McLaren basically shoot themselves in the foot here. Lando is second in the drivers' standing. A win would have cut 15 points of Max' lead, instead it was only 8. They are going to regret that move later
They shot themselves in the foot when they pitted Lando first for absolutely no reason... HAM was 8 seconds away, there was basically zero risk and they crumbled under very little pressure. No matter how good Lando is, Oscar with clean air in Hungary... it's game over, everyone happy, the end. A mess of their own making!
Was watching Guenther's podcast yesterday where he refers to "McLaren's "bet" being Lando... which had me wonder if someone at McLaren/Mumtalakat may have some nice bet riding for Max wining the title. It would explain why they gifted him 7 points.
@@gpw203 The choice between ruthlessness and pampering a "rookie" whose feelings better not get hurt is an easy one for me... but maybe I'm just too old for this sh*t. ;)
total agree. Mclaren did shoot themselves in the foot. Should of let Norris know they were pitting him first to protect form Lewis on faster laps and to give place back after Piastri's pit straight away before piting him. (exclude not pitting Piastri the lap after). Then let them race. In this I still think Norris would of closed and overtaken Piastri in my opinion. Gives me vibes Mclaren don't think Norris can close on Max in driver title. Had Norris given the place back on last corner on last lap wouldn't look good on the team or the sport. It's happened before....Ferrari???? Mclaren need to be fighting for everything constructors and drivers title! It's supposed to be a race, best driver wins!
Yes, and I think Lando shot himself in the foot when he let Daniel in Monza. And second foot now. Is there any champion that was letting people win? I don't remember any, they all explicitly don't do it. I am worried that Lando lost, or never had, that state of mind.
Brilliantly put Eddie, on Ralphs news. In fact the whole show was on point as usual, but it felt right with you voicing and reaffiring your support publicy 👏🏻
Guys...who the hell cares who won "off the line"? It's not how you start the race, it's how you finish it. And over the course of a race, stuff happens. What, if Oscar had a spin in the lead at turn 60 and Lando passes him, does he give it back to him because he "deserves" it? If oscar then had a pitstop mishap and he comes out behind lando with a 6-sec pit, does he also "give it back"? It was shit strategy and it was shit team management, plain and simple. McLaren was being needlessly overcareful and paid the price. All they need to do is openly apologize to its drivers and take responsibility. None of this "passive aggressive" threat bullshit , especially to your loyal number one who just signed a multi-year deal. Wins do not come easy and McLaren shouldn't bank on other opportunities when they are the king of throwing wins away. God awful last few months from management...makes me sad as a McLaren fan...
As an Aussie this really took the shine off Oscars win. Lando should have given the position back as soon as it was possible so he could have given himself a chance to take on Oscar and win it. Lando lost the race from the first corner and from his decision making.
@@Sauvage_Foxes Mclaren made a real meal of it. They had plenty of time to box Oscar ad then Lando on the lap they boxed him anyway. Never a danger from Lewis behind. Losers even in Victory. It’s there for all to see. 🤯💥
There's a significant problem with this point. We don't know whether Mclaren's order was for Lando to simply allow Oscar past and to then resume full competitive racing or to concede the race victory to Oscar. Given Lando's reaction it seems it was to concede.
I don't see where people get this idea that they weren't thinking of holding station if/once Piastri was given the position back earlier. Yeah I know they've said that they're okay to race. BUT McLaren made it clear last weekend that they value the TEAM Championship very much now and are very in contention, so risking a race between drivers isn't in their gameplan. They're not in a position like Merc were in 2014, 2015 etc.
@@Andash75 Agreed. They took a very safe apporach to ensure the lead but once that was confirmed then I think it's on Lando to realise to quickly give the position back quick so he go for the win. The problem is the money is divided up based on the constructors points...McLaren could win the constructors with no individual wins and take $200m, or have 10 wins come 4th and have $120m... its a business at the end of the day, so the constructors does mean a lot...
Why did McLaren let lando make his stop first anyway? And with the second stop letting Oscar wait 2 laps extra to make his stop, to make sure Lando was ahead, and then decide to switch anyway? I said it before, for me, McLaren are not ready to win the championship

Having messed up one decision in calling Landon into the Pits first they should have let it lie to reduce the points gap further. Those decisions win titles. Or lose them.

Maclaren is at fault. Undercut was clear and boxing Lando first and Oscar only 2 laps later and then ask him to give position back was one of the most slap in the face moments they could do to both drivers. Sort of reflects the CEO's character in my opinion.
If he were winning more races then I'd agree. And I want him to win more, don't get me wrong. He isn't though so potentially burning that bridge could have been fatal. Lets say he ignores team orders and then is released next season due to the team owner claiming zero tolerance for anyone not following team orders. Now he's potentially out a seat and other teams know he will ignore them if he's in the lead. Now, this is all just speculation but you can see how ignoring them and taking the W in that situation might have been worse in the long run. Oscar will never give a race away from now on. Marc Webber won’t allow this and will instruct Piastri to not give away his position. Multi 21 has left some scars …
I agree with the win bonus going to both drivers. You force one to let the other win then you owe the one you told to fall back the win bonus. You want them to be a team player then you need to be a team player.
Lando was wrong. He did not lose the race off the line, he dropped to second. If he truly feels that he had lost the race, he has no business being in F1, and we know that is total bollocks. He was making the best of a bad job. He was in front by a bit of luck, and maybe some poor decisions by the team, but he was not evern remotely at fault and McLaren's decision to punish him was poor.
@@Mexxx65 There is almost always an element of luck in any win. The pit stop undercut is a feature of pretty much 75% of wins and nobody tries to claim that the driver who gains a place that way has not got it fairly. Both Llando and Max had to back off and put wheels outside track limits to avoid a 1st corner collision ! Mclarens Hungarian GP could have ended right there but for Llando's good driving. Max was absolutely correct that he had no choice but to leave track limits....... Red Bull could have and perhaps should have waited for an adjudicated decision. 🤔

@@g3n3ralkim23 doesn’t matter his carelessness caused a collision therefore a penalty must be applied! However the fia have let these actions go unpunished before and this is why max goes for such inexplicable and idiotic moves now!
How can race teams talk about F1 being the pinnacle of motorsport and then basically deny a sports athlete the chance of doing something that all sports people strive to do..and thats WIN! It must be so demoralising.
If Mclaren had followed the pit stop order that all teams follow ie the lead driver on track pits first we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Oscar would have been 4 or 5seconds up the road after both had pitted and the race in Oscar's bag. Don't forget that they gave Lando the 1st stop on both occasions to help him stay ahead of 3rd pace, so potentially they've gifted Lando 6 or 7 seconds over both stops. But because they wanted to make sure Lewis had no chance to catch Lando they pitted him first causing the drama. Oscar deserved that win all day every day.
F1 is a constructors series and the drivers are employees paid to maximise points for their team towards the World Constructors Championship. There is a side championship that fans who have a favourite driver can follow but all the money, prestige is tied up in the WCC. I agree, it’s frustrating to see teams swap drivers around but Lando, Oscar and the team would have agreed on rules of engagement depending on scenarios before the race.
It was like a torpedo arriving. One of the drivers locked up overcooking it, and went straight on instead of taking the corner. The other driver left more than a car's width. Lewis - turning in as normal - proven in the data Max - braking at the same point as usual but at a faster speed than previous - proven in the data Narrative - try to pin the blame on the guy doing the normal stuff
I would recommend trying this explanation with police after having an accident on the way to work - "I drive here every day, I was braking normal and taking my normal line through the corner. This car was never there before so it's his fault I drove into him. It was a racing accident, Max locked up and was not making the corner, but Lewis could just wait for Max to just fly by and then turn and not turn into him.
@@Arek-nb9pt your analogy is so wide of the mark my next door neighbour laughed. Racing etiquette and the rules of the road are barely related. Max was out of control.

I am glad DC said it here. The audience views the F 1 sport more through the drivers as stars 🌟 of the race. We pay for it too and live to see the fights play out. EJ of course sees it through team eyes. Of course there is no driver without the team. But, to have this uncomfortable dialogue on the radio where the giving back of the place was so obvious wasn’t good for the public. As they say, cringe moment but for everyone involved.
We don't know the exact wording of what was agreed upon at McLaren before the race, so it's a difficult situation to discuss. We know that at the start, Lando messed up, and that he was disappointed with himself, so his mindset was certainly not positive when he was asked to move over for Oscar. To me, the radio messages from the pit wall to Lando were deplorable, manipulative even. McLaren could/should have considered the obvious alternative: We'll let Lando win today, and we'll tell Oscar "Yes, we realise what we agreed upon this morning, but Lando is now too far ahead, and unless you can rapidly catch him, we will let him drive on. There will be plenty more chances for you in the future". Everybody could live with that.
Despite Max's complaint, RB did not make the wrong decision. Max did close in to HAM's tail with many laps left. Max should have third, the highest position for him at that day. It was his own fault to lock up the wheels and crashed onto HAM. It was not about RB's calls.
Lando is an employee, simple as that. It’s not his team or his car. The team has the right to dictate strategy to their employees. Next you’ll tell me that the pit crew have their own say in when they want to change tires…
@@hoopdyhop76 100% agree. Amazes me the number of newer F1 fans who don’t even know it’s a constructors series and that’s where the money/kudos is and as you say the drivers are highly paid (albeit important) employees of a team of +1,000people. Also that strategy the teams dictate would most likely have been discussed between both drivers & team before the race.
@@hoopdyhop76 No, reality doesn't support this. Audiences are demonstrably interested in drivers, the money and sponsors are interested in the audiences, teams need the money. The fastest drivers know this which is why they can dictate terms. This is marketing; modelling, endorsing, "influencing", celebrity and so on. It's about the "stars". Slower drivers are not in strong positions so are unable to dictate terms. This is why teams are able to control them and why they have a distorted view. The only time winning teams don't need drivers is if they can create the significantly fastest car. However by this time audiences are familiar with the fastest drivers and the successful teams will likely already employ them.
Let Oscar past then let them race should have been the decision, but I feel McLaren care more about maximum points for a constructor's championship they actually have a chance of winning.
With the Hamilton/Verstappen clash what I found interesting was Max sent it in a torpedo move which is funny if you consider the radio in Austria where Max was critical of Lando saying torpedo moves is not how you overtake. I am surprised this hasn't been picked up on by the media and someone should put the clips of Max's Austria radio and his move in Hungary together.
The GIF circulating online shows MAx steaming past unable to turn in, and Hamilton steering in just in time to still get his front wheel in front of Max's before they cross. Looks damning. Why not just wait a bit with the turn in to prevent collision? Clasping a crash from the claws of wide miss.
Thank you both for a great show. However, I must say you are missing information on the Alonso vs Lance situation in Hungary and I do wonder what the fallout will be given Alonso's temperament.
They gave preferential treatment to Lando with the pit stops after his poor start and if they didn’t would he have even got second place? Like they said on the radio this is a team sport and Lando might need these decisions to go his way in the future. I remember Lewis doing it on a few occasions being given the pass to chase down the other teams and when he couldn’t he gave the place back it’s just part of the sport, just look at Redbull with Seb when he refused to give up that spot to his teammate even when ordered it destroyed that relationship.
Hi guys. Was wondering on these 2 questions 1. Why McLaren is not aiming for a year end driver championship by prioritising lando rather choose to rotate wins between 2 drivers ? ESP considering lando quest is very within reach ? 2. Lando pull away 6 sec from Oscar with older tires in the same car meaning he is obviously quicker. So How is Oscar more deserving to win this than lando ?
It was madness. Things like that out of sequence pit stop happen from time to time. It would have been a slight shame for Piastri, but Lando should have won, and that would have been that. It's happened to people pushing for the title, the moaned but then got on with it. It probably would have done Lando's confidence the world of good as well.
If Verstappen beats Norris to the WDC by only 1 to 6 points this season, how clever are McLaren going to look with their team orders in Hungary? They've suggested that Piastri will support Norris' bid to win the WDC, but will he really if he thinks HE could win the WDC? McLaren are at risk of having two drivers fighting each other for the WDC, whereas Red Bull only have one driver - Max Verstappen. The last time McLaren had two drivers fighting for the WDC was 2007 - And they managed to hand the WDC to Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari! There's a good possibility that McLaren's history could be about to repeat itself!
Peter Windsor made the same point quite some time ago about it being a poor decision having two very quick drivers. He said the same in reference to Mercedes too.
It’s a race, Oscar made 1 or 2 mistakes and the penalty was lando had the chance to under cut . The right answer would have been, Oscar if you want this then catch up ! Or deal with it

DC has hit it on the head it feels weird to even have to speak of it and tbh it wouldn't have been a big deal in the 90s it just would not have been talked about nearly as much.
Regarding DC's time racing - I have never got my head around McLaren's constant insistence that equal treatment was given to Mika and David, then you would see Ron Dennis the Team Principal and Adrian Newey the Technical Director working on Mika's car. By no stretch of the imagination is that equal treatment. I thought McLaren's senior management looked like fools with that mockery of equal treatment and it seems they're heading down the same road with Lando and Oscar.
Ive said it before but this is Lando showing his true colours here.. hes not as nice and innocent as people think.. Piastri is a great great driver, with a hell of a lot of potential and one hell of a team mate..Lando... has a huge chip on his shoulder. I am British too btw..
Another funny point about all the GPs is they are trying to be net 0 soon. How will that happen if they transporting all the cars, parts, human etc around the world 24 times in a year
Were not direct team orders to change the outcome of a race not outlawed by FIA. I am aware it is possible to set this up with a call to a car to slow down due to an engine fault which could be not real but at least it would not be a direct order to change the result
Exactly Eddie, Lando lost it off the line. Oscar deserved the win, he drove so well. He was undercut by his own team, which was foolish. The team did the right thing to swap them back and restore the balance. Hats off to Lando for doing it- what a sportsman!
As an avid fan, Norris agreeing to slow down, was a bitter end to a very entertaining race. Hope we now don’t get this situation, publicly played out again.
McLaren destroyed the glory and pride that Oscar should have enjoyed from his first win. Oscar won the race at the start and Lando lost it with his poor start. The team stuffed up by pitting Lando first for BS reasons. Shame on you McLaren.
I reckon they had the same race-to-the-1st-corner thing going on that DC will be familiar with. Lando passed the test of resisting the temptation to take the win, and failed the test of being ruthless enough to take the win. Mclaren acted clumsily, and gave us way more entertainment from the race as a result.
David never actually answered Eddie's question about Max possibly going to Mercedes. David's opinions are skewed because he's still too engrained in the Red Bull family to criticise them in any meaningful way. Eddie was spot on when he said David "never got out of the driver's suit"... I think this is why his commentary on F1 TV often rubs me the wrong way.

It would explain why they gifted him 7 points.

total agree.
Good for DC. Respect

Oscar did loose time and went of, he didnt have a perfect race

In some other sports, McLaren behaviour might even be termed ‘match fixing’

EJ of course sees it through team eyes. Of course there is no driver without the team. But, to have this uncomfortable dialogue on the radio where the giving back of the place was so obvious wasn’t good for the public. As they say, cringe moment but for everyone involved.
Love the full podcast on TH-cam.
And someone at RB was messing with Hannah's calls, I'm sure.
Despite Max's complaint, RB did not make the wrong decision. Max did close in to HAM's tail with many laps left. Max should have third, the highest position for him at that day. It was his own fault to lock up the wheels and crashed onto HAM. It was not about RB's calls.
Fully agree with my childhood hero DC! EJ, you are talking nonsense…
06:20 Constructor's championship earns more money than WDC..

Hi guys. Was wondering on these 2 questions
So
How is Oscar more deserving to win this than lando ?
It was madness. Things like that out of sequence pit stop happen from time to time. It would have been a slight shame for Piastri, but Lando should have won, and that would have been that.
It's happened to people pushing for the title, the moaned but then got on with it.
It probably would have done Lando's confidence the world of good as well.
A slight shame? To lose his first win that he had on merit? It's a lot more than a slight shame...
It's a longshot for Norris to win it and Piastri isnt getting close he's over 100 points back ffs

Well, Schumacher got boo'd when he did, and gave the winners pokal to Barrichello looking ashamed lol.
Gotta love David Coulthard. He's a real gentleman - certainly no weakling, but a man who has a brain and doesn't run his mouth, as many others do.
You guys are the best
There is no point in trying to win if you're to give it away at the last minute....it's cheating in my eyes
It’s a race, Oscar made 1 or 2 mistakes and the penalty was lando had the chance to under cut . The right answer would have been, Oscar if you want this then catch up ! Or deal with it
Not the 3 seconds at each pitsop Landon gained 😉
@@craigf7188 just don’t like the idea of the race being over at the the first corner . As Peter Windsor said if he had of make room for Oscar at the first corner, nobody was going around that corner 😏
OP tyres were done, LN had to slow down too much
what do you guys think about a current driver in F1 coming out as Gay? as a fan there is an obvious case of current driver at the top of the sport.. what would stop someone coming out? great to listen as always
DC has hit it on the head it feels weird to even have to speak of it and tbh it wouldn't have been a big deal in the 90s it just would not have been talked about nearly as much.
Since when was the race decided at the first corner ?
22:45 no thats for cameras,
at skyf1 boy lewy admit he tryd to murden max at that silverrstone gp.
I like this podcast EJ is is a crazy lad!
"Me old mucker" is Eddie Jordan all over.
Wish Crofty mentioned Max staying up late
And RB should have kept quiet to max on "giving it back" leave it to the stewards.
The race is longer than the drive to the first corner. Lando was faster than the longer distance.
Lando is a child , Oscar is a man
Second year dude almost crashing team mate in P2 for drivers championship 🏆🥇
Subscribed. For the record, 10 years ago i thought EJ was a legend when he was annoying everyone in commentary, still is.
Great episode, but I agree with David, why was the #1 driver told to finish 2nd.Hopefully that doesn’t bite them in the arse later.
Mac couldn't see Ham coming??? 😂
DC - old school mate.
Don't think lando is going to give Oscars any room next time. Get ready for max junior
I liked that more than I thought I would!
