    I used to hate ellipticals. Then one day early AM at the gym I started using one for warm-up after avoiding them at all costs. I felt how it gets your blood flowing without impact, and you can even get creative with the upper body assistance if you feel like it. Now I love them and consider them the best cardio option overall, taking everything into account. So it's good to see they are Mountain Dog approved haha

    I've been doing high incline treadmill for past 11 weeks. At first it was as you said - it felt like calf and feet workout. But after 8 weeks or so, I didn't feel it anymore. For me right now the limiting factor of my cardio (i worked it up to 15% incline and speed between 5 and 6 km\h) is how hot and sweaty I get and overall exhaustion.

    • @thunkjunk
      @thunkjunk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Running is hard on my joints and causes pain so I tend to do the high incline too so that I get the intensity. But after your 11 weeks, were you getting leg gains or losing your gains from the cardio assuming your are bodybuilding?

  • @rawintensity8141

    Jump rope is the most underrated form of cardio in terms of burning fat and improving cardio vascular condition. 10/3 min rounds or 12/3 min rounds is great. Boxers,k1 fighters, muay thai fighters, mma fighters do jump rope on a regular basis and they have great cardio conditioning and also have very less body fat. God bless you john.

    I was recommended swimming by orthopaedic surgeons and physios because it builds stamina in your core stability. A lot of the normal core stability exercises are quite brief and focus on strength only, but you need your core to be stable for long periods if you have an injury there.

  • @seanissomething
    @seanissomething 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    HIIT is great for fitness/conditioning, and is great of you play a sport like football/soccer where you have to do exactly that - quick explosive bursts of sprinting interspersed with jogging/walking. However, for a bodybuilder, it's super demanding on your recovery, and also depletes the energy systems you need for weight lifting. Not to mention if you're 240lbs you don't really want to be doing high impact cardio! Your poor knees and ankles! great video as always John, swimming is very underrated.

  • @donutfitness6324
    @donutfitness6324 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Absolutely agree and a big part of this is how "fun" the activity is (to your point about swimming). I genuinely enjoy swimming or riding a bike outdoors and before you know it you have an activity where you are burning 300-600+ calories and it's actually fun. For someone like myself who isn't competing and really does a lot of cardio for health the "fun factor" is a huge ranking factor.

    Great video, John! I have a spin bike in my home gym because you can buy a good sturdy spin bike for a fraction of the cost of a high-quality solid elliptical. Yesterday, I decided to go out for a walk instead of my indoor spin-bike cardio. Since I don't walk every often, it causes my hips and legs to be sore afterwards. The good kind of sore, though. What's nice about walking outside is you can move your hips and legs more freely than being restricted to a cardio machine. Plus you can get some healthy sun and feel a nice breeze.

    I heard this a while ago, and I believe it to be true.. all-out sprinting is an excellent way to kick the body into fat-burning mode, versus jogging at a moderate pace for longer.. So when I want to burn fat (like now that I dont' climb any towers) I make sure to go all-out on a jumprope, or running... even though I can't run fast for long, dang it feels good afterwards!

  • @Saiarts_yt
    @Saiarts_yt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What's the best type of cardio for bodybuilders?
    For me, I have a bodybuilding like physique when I use mostly bodyweight resistance training. I don't call myself a Goku but Arnold Schwarznager with functional strength and having a certain body fat percentage to live longer. The best cardio for me is running with adding basic parkour skills to make running more entertainable.

      Japan only shut gyms a few weeks ago. Some are still open though. It was just “strongly recommended” they close, so 95% did. The ones still open are making a killing on visitor day passes.

    • @marcusappelberg369
      @marcusappelberg369 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ill Matix People are dying here in Sweden, and the number is increasing, but this is mostly because the elder care in Stockholm is shit. Basically the corporate policies of the nursing homes allows for loads of short term workers to come in and work for a little while, giving care to the elderly, and few, if any, of these short term workers are tested, and they are badly paid and have shit working conditions. So it ends up with Corona spreading like crazy in nursing homes, mostly in Stockholm but also, to a lesser degree, in Sweden as a whole. Also, many nursing homes and hospitals lack resources to even deal with Corona properly, such as not enough masks etc. Furthermore, many of our nursing homes are funded by taxpayer money, yet privately owned so much of the taxes go to billionaires instead of the nursing homes and the workers there. This policy is only in effect here in Sweden, in the rest of the world this kind of corporatism is not allowed in the welfare sector. Stockholm is a crazy place and many in Stockholm don't respect the advice from the Government about the virus. Here in Umeå, in the north, there have been few deaths. We will se in a few months if the Swedish policy is the correct one. It's a hard question. In some ways quarantine is good, cause it decreases people coming into contact with each other, but then, if one thinks of for example social consequences, it can be devastating. Many women for example in the rest of the world are quarantined with abusive husbands/boyfriends etc. And the problems of alcohol are rising, with the abuse that comes with that. So perhaps quarantine kills people from that ... It's hard. That's why I'm saying I'm not an expert. I don't know what is the best way to deal with this. But I'm happy that I can go to the gym. :)

Outside of crew, I’ve almost never seen a person row correctly in the gym. Far too often they begin pulling with their arms before full knee extension or they fail to maintain posture through the movement. Sad to hear it doesn’t work well with your lower back! Walking my dog for three kilometers a day works fine for me. But back in my olimpic lifting days I used to perform a lot of box jumps and overhead barbell frog jumps. Not much of a cardio to my taste, but for sure hell of a leg workout.

    The machines show total calories burned, which includes non-activity metabolism. You need to search specifically for machines that show only activity related burned calories (i.e. the work you did on the machine) to get something more accurate, and even then there is a margin of error.

    As a former NPC and INBF, WNBF competitive bodybuilder (type 1 diabetic for almost 35 years too) cardio that has worked the best for me is stair-master(which I currently have at home wit my home gym and use it 4 x week for 30 minutes fasted b4 breakfast) and treadmill walking on a high incline and about 2.8-3.1 speed (enough to break a good sweat and also tighten my quads, glutes and hams), and walking with my wife and son as well also works good for overall health and also burn off extra off-season calories to maintain.

    How often do you recommend someone do the cardio health exercises? You mentioned it can affect your recovery so wasn’t sure how much it would impact muscle growth. Thank you for the great videos and information!

    AirRunner treadmill is great for HIIT. Softer on joints with its curved surface. Easy to adjust speed since you drive it yourself. Weird to run at at first, but as I got used to it ive never gone back to the regular treadmill.

    I'm a severe asthmatic on oxygen 24/7 and need to constantly be breathing through my nebulizer taking breathing treatments when doing cardio, so I'm pretty limited to anything stationary (assault bike, treadmill, elliptical). When I first started going to gym I saw so many people running on treadmill but physically there is no way I can do that! I can't run at all.. so I figured I can't go fast, BUT luckily I can go higher to burn a bit of calories so I crank up the angle on the treadmill. Slowly, my "all out" is getting faster at that incline.
    I found it's harder to use things like don't force my feet to move. You mentioned the treadmill help propel your feet but I use that to my advantage like I need to keep up. Don't keep up, you fly off! Now on elliptical because I'm controlling speed instead of machine, I can't just try to zone out for a few seconds and focus on something other than how I can't breathe or how bad I want to stop. I have to constantly watch screen to see how fast I'm going because I tend to slow waaayyy down if I don't carefully watch.
    Hope everyone is doing well and is safe!! Hopefully not too much longer until we can all get back in the gym lifting those weights!

    I've found if you want to increase endurance and some heart/lung efficiency, jogging is good. If you want the most efficient heart/lungs, and a better Vo2 max, sprinting is the only way. But walking for an hour or two fasted is also a good option.

    I would say skipping rope is the best cardio. If you have a look at some Boxers, such the Klitschko brothers or Lennox Lewis, these guys are massive. Evander Holyfield during both the Tyson fights could have also gone on to win the Mr Universe that same night. Olegsanker Usyk from Ukraine as well. Skipping rope is full body so it gets everything going. Especially the calves which is a stubborn weak point for many.
