    So you're saying I can get the same great feelings of being a successful entrepreneur by simply playing WoW, with none of the financial risk, 80 hour work weeks, and stress of entrepreneurship. Am I missing something? :)

    • @think41c
      @think41c 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      FYI - I'm just joking in my original comment. I'm not truly suggesting to give up starting a business and pretending to be fulfilled by playing WoW. However, if you TRULY were fulfilled somehow or other by playing WoW, the alternative of starting a business will probably always seem too great a leap. But for the rest of us that have that itch to grow endlessly, WoW may feel good for a short fix, but it'll never be satisfying long term anyway.

    Man, things like World of Warcraft may give you some form of happiness, but at the end of the day it drains a bunch of your time and messes with your dopamine, then when you get back to real life it feels like nothing memorable happened and yet a bunch of time has passed. Plus, like you said, our physical minds are simply not wired / optimized in a way that supports the gaming / tech lifestyle; that's not how we evolved!

    • @OTPpride

      The thing is, for a lot of people games like WoW are tied into their social world. Their social status hinges on them interacting with friends online while playing these games.
      So it’s not just wasted time. It’s not that you’re making your WoW character stronger while you become weaker. It is actually integral to many people’s social lives.

    Thanks Alex, I really needed to see this. Last weekend i didn't have a lot to do in my business. And with the country being on lockdown right now, social activities are a no go. So I decided to buy a month of WoW to play classic. next thing I know I am playing all hours of the day. It completely consumed me, and when i had to go back to work I had the same experience as you: It was frcking boring... At first I was looking for ways to reach my goals and play wow in moderation, But you showed me that, that will just sabotage my succes. Just deleted my wow account (was almost lvl 60 so that hurt xD) thank you for showing me the truth.

      Going from caring to not caring about something is difficult, but it's a skill, one you can develop. Routinely test yourself, take only cold showers for a week, go a month without ever taking your phone out of your house, stuff like that. And as you test yourself, your force of will grows.

    • @kaloyan2778
      @kaloyan2778 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should read the book " The power of habit" . Its a great book about how powerful habits are, why they even exist, how a person who isn't able to form memories survives purely out of habit and many other interesting cases talked about with the science behind it. It even touches on how to retain habits, as far as I remember it talked about one of the steps in the AA program, which was to believe in a higher being or a higher purpose (you should check it out for more details). However, if you just find yourself occasionally wanting to distract yourself it could be perfectly natural and good, just be clear why. Maybe you need to socialize for a bit, or your brain needs a bit of time to relax and take in the information. Maybe you need time to build up how long you can stay productive.

    • @pedrooliveira2089
      @pedrooliveira2089 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Repetition fueled by Will. Start doing cold shower like @PaperCubed mentioned (start like me, warm shower and slowly go into cold water and stand for alteast 1 minute under it). I'm doing full cold showers today and yes it's cold, it will always be cold, but I'm used to it now. Put challenges to yourself and commit yourself to them, have a why you want to do them. So when you want to avoid it, remember the WHY YOU ACTUALLY WANT to do it. Start small and grow on a daily/weekly basis

    In 2005 a spoof video about gaming addiction was made by Pure Pwnage. The theme song being love found online and how warcraft made a social life unnecessary.
    When this video first came out, me and my wife played together side by side, some days we would take the kids to school, run back, start playing till it was time to collect them , then after collecting them one of us would carry on playing. We shared this vid together and laughed and sang it together. Years passed by and my son aged 8 wanted to play, so he made a character.
    He would play, and not want to come off. We set time limits and boundaries and he would break them, we deleted the game and he would go round his mates and play. We got rid of the computer.
    He watched videos about it on his phone. As he entered his teens his life became world of warcraft. He could tell me the lore of any character in the game or the precise rotation needed by a class on a certain boss stage, became one of the top 5% of players in Europe.
    After leaving school he was immersed in the world. His benefits bought him a computer and an account and he played 14 hours a day and more. We would switch off the electrics to end his sessions because he was incapable of coming off independently. The arguments about warcraft distanced him from us. His relationship with his Mum broke down. They grew apart. I fought to keep us together, but we had to give him an ultimatum. Abide by our rules or leave.
    Aged 19 he left home as we "threw him out" by taking him down housing. He was in a homeless hostel playing WOW. His room had a hundred and twenty litres of coke and I dont know how many half eaten rotting pizzas. I would clean his room and the next week it would be back.
    He's 23 now. The argument's and regrets were part of why my wife left.
    6 weeks ago, he deleted his account and told me "I've wasted my life" , Blizzard design the game to addict vulnerable minds.
    As I sit here , My sons life in ruins, my wife a hundred miles away I watched this vid and sang the words that made us laugh so long ago.
    "World of warcraft is a feeling...who needs a social life"

      I'm sorry to read your experience. The good news is you have your son back and he can build his life the way he wants without WoW there to ruin it again. People change and that's great your son has won some sort of lottery where he realized what his life turned into while still having enough time to redesign his life with a passion.

    Here a little to do list, inspired by the video!
    How to trigger happiness (Dopamine), while staying true to your most joyful vision?
    - Remove easy, superficial, harmful dopamine triggers from your life.
    - Make a list of things in your life which grey out fulfilling behaviours and experiences.
    - Remove those from your life.
    - Pick fulfilling behaviours which also trigger dopamine and get you to the dream goals you have set for yourself. Make a list of those as well.
    - Get in the habit of taking those actions every day.
    - Update the two lists every month, learning from your experiences, identifying new items and adapting existing one's if prudent.

    A wow addiction isn’t only dangerous because of the easy dopamine release and feeling of increased social standing, it preys on an important human need of nurturing and growth as well. In the wild, you would obviously have this need to help keep your offspring alive and flourishing, maybe even use it to grow a garden for an easy food source. It’s the same feeling of satisfaction you get when building a business and why it seems so important. You’ll never get this feeling from drinking, heroin, meth, or even social media (unless you have convinced yourself you’re “building” a brand, but it’s less enjoyable to read the hater comments than it is to get support from a guild.) As a former wow addict, I’ve never experienced anything remotely as destructive because it preys on nearly every human need. Seems like you might be going through a difficult time, take it easy on yourself.

    Okay wow this seems obvious but it's really eye opening. But is it possible to be too far gone? I've been rewiring my brain for YEARS AND YEARS and I've experienced exactly what Alex has described, only more severe. The thought of smashing my phone gives me a physical chill. Is it better to go cold Turkey or try weaning off? Even as I'm writing this all kinds of alarm bells are going off in my head telling me I can't survive without all my dopamine sources. There are even arguments that appear logical.

      You don't need to get throw away all instantly imo. You should get rid of the most negative ones, like watching an alex becker video probably gives you a decent amount of dopamine and its not that bad for your brain i'd say, but watching p@rn on the regular and spending a good amount of time & energy on it to get a huge dopamine spike at the end is super negative compared to the first one.

      gaming professionals have a team of people you never see on camera there to make sure they don't look like they play video games 12 hours a day everyday. the body needs exercise, sunlight and social interaction or people get smeagol like real quick. wouldn't be much of a role model to keep other people hooked on the game if they looked like a basement dweller. hope your roommate gets over his video game addiction.

    Hello, I've been researching this topic myself recently, and I agree with you that pc games, tv shows, cake(lol), take low effort and supply us with the instant gratification. You mentioned that you should just not play WoW, but what about other things, like youtube, even the random interesting topic researching throughout wikipedia, reddit of which is mostly for self entertainment rather for self development, these things also supply us with gratification and still require less effort, than for example learning a new skill or building a business etc. So what do you think is the best solution to this? Quitting cold turkey and not experiencing those things at all or limiting your time on them? Would really appreciate your approach on this.

    Good god, I am glad I watched this video. I started my business beginning of this year, and I've always been a big gamer. I figured I could work on my business and game at the sametime, but I couldn't maintain consistency in my business because it was boring, but it was ONLY boring when I focused too much time on videogames. Whenever I removed videogames from the equation I almost instantly began interested and consistent in my business. This video explains my lack of consistency. I knew I had to remove videogames completely, I knew I had to sell my gaming computer, but now I truly understand why. Game changer, thank you Alex!

I've recently removed video games, social media, TV, and youtube (except for biz videos). I was playing Xbox around 4 hours per day this year, it caused me to hate my business and everything associated with it. I lost clients, time, and money because of it.
