- The family of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols is speaking out for the first time since seeing the body camera footage of a deadly police encounter in Memphis. All five officers involved have been fired for violating department policies. NBC’s Priscilla Thompson reports for TODAY.

@@GiannaL 3 minutes of beating, peppered sprayed, and tased, I can’t even begin to imagine what this mom is going through. And Tyre was just yards from his home and was calling for his mom. This is absolutely horrific.

Can anyone explain to me how publicly releasing body camera footage can conceivably compromise an investigation exactly?
They want to get their forces in order and give law enforcement time to prepare for the typical rioting, looting and arson that always follows these incidents. If I'm a Memphis business owner, I'm boarding my windows.
It’s usually BS, but sometimes police try to hold video and catch someone with first hand knowledge that hasn’t been made public yet.
I don’t see how that could apply in this case though.

@@Overonator because it could lead to witnesses tailoring their statements to what's on the body cam footage. The investigators need to take those statements from all witnesses so they know what they really saw, not what the footage shows.
Look at the Kyle Rittenhouse trial, the guy who got his arm shot lied to the police about what happened and then had to change his story when the video showed he lied.

If police are allowed to use deadly force when they feel their life is in danger, shouldn't citizens be allowed to flee from a situation when they feel theirs is too? I think we need a law giving citizens this basic right. Additionally, if citizen's identify them-self's to police during a stop, and there is no public threat, the citizen should have the right to avoid further interaction with the officer. Whatever citation the officer chooses to write can be mailed. These traffic stops turned into executions must stop.
You've got a great point. Without knowing details or proven facts... the description of him fleeing, sadly churns my stomach making me think he felt he knew he needed to flee from these people. And it's a dichotomy, that we know we need to be calm and cordial and obey police, and let due process do its thing, but when 5 of them start attacking you... what do you do? I think "resisting arrest" really needs an overhaul.
I think 30% of the police go out there looking for excuses to shoot somebody. That's just my own opinion

I can not believe that this man was brutally murdered in the way that he was - - By Police Officers who take an oath to protect and to serve. This is more than concerning. The fact that 5 police officers had done this to a seemingly un-armed man sickens me when i think that he was literally beaten to death on the street of an American City. If the shoe was on the other foot it would be a Capital Murder case. @@Robert_kuchar - Maybe, Dunno. But as far as justice, ABSOFREAKINGLOUTELY‼️ That they terminated the five officers essentially means (IMO) that they are guilty AF. Termination I believe removes the union and city paid legal representation, the city is distancing themselves from them. Let’s hope when the body camera footage is released next week that it sheds light on why they were stopped, and exactly why they did what they did. I don’t see any possible defense for their actions, let’s hope it’s a fair trial and those 5 officers get the maximum sentences.

@@sandhanitizer15 - No clue, that’s what one of the newscasts said, that ‘the body camera footage would be released next week.” I think that was a day or so ago, so hopefully less. Knowing the police… IF the footage is particularly damning for the officers, they may withhold it until after the jury is seated so as to not influence potential jurors.

It sounds like these officers are going to jail well deserved. Having said this, please teach your children not to run or obstruct police. Reason I say this is because some officers are good and some are bad. As a retired officer, I’ve worked with many great officers and a couple of bad ones. I firmly believe 99.9 percent of the victims of police brutality would still be alive had they simply cooperated completely. If your mistreated file a complaint later and live to sue! I even think Rodney King would be alive today had he not let officers on a high speed chase and cooperated after stop. Even bad officers that I worked with didn’t thump someone in the head if they totally cooperated. I haven’t seen the video but this sounds real bad. Everyday on TH-cam I watch videos of citizens resisting or trying to bait officer’s into a lawsuit. We are sending the wrong messages to our children!!
Another problem is the quality of officer’s were hiring. Today, most departments have eliminated pensions and eliminated health care benefits for retirees. Umm, why would someone take this job and also have to deal with the stress and you might get shot! Today, departments will hire anyone without a felony conviction. People that can’t get a job anywhere become officers! I’m not saying we don’t have some good new officers but hiring standards are way down!! Had these officers been white the city would already be burning.

There has to be more than just 5 officers involved, who went to the mothers house and lied to his mother about the ordeal? It is a crime to know what happened and not give a truthful report. @B Bodziak been pulled over for many traffic violations. Not once did any if them require the police to hands on. So apparently, the traffic violation wasn't the issue. Actions have consequences. He never learned that growing up but I guess he did this time.
