Do I need to Dyno-Tune My Motorcycle When I Add A Slip-On Exhaust

  • CanyonChasers Question: Is it important to have your motorcycle tuned when you add a slip-on exhaust system and/or a free-flow air filter to my motorcycle, or is it only necessary to have a bike dyno-tuned when I fit a full exhaust system?

    I dunno about cars, but motorcycles are tuned from the factory to meet emissions requirements. They are not tuned for performance or fuel economy. That means, they are typically set up lean from the factory. By adding high-flow air filters or freer flowing exhaust pipes, without compensating for those changes, you are making the bike run more lean than it already is. Most - if not all - fuel injected bikes do a good job of compensating for one thing or another, but not both. So, if you add only an air filter, you likely won't have to do anything with your fueling. If you add only a slip-on, you likely won't have to do anything with your fueling. However, if you add an air filter and a slip-on, you're probably going to have to retune your bike or you risk a meltdown from running too hot from an overly lean condition.
    All that being said, even a bone stock bike can benefit from a tune, one way or another.

      @@Champion2Manager you can adjust your ecu without a dyno. The dyno is important because no 2 bikes r the same, and a dyno is the only real way to squeeze everything out of your bike. An "off the shelf" ecu or fuel map will help and be better than stock, but a dyno will allow even more fine tuning for that specific bike on the dyno.

    • @CanyonChasers

      An ECU flash would effectively do the same thing for you. The thing is we need to retune the FI system to account for different amounts of air coming and going through the engine.

    Often heard people said why get a fuel controller when your bike is running with a stock exhaust. I installed one on my Z1000 with stock exhaust and hell yes i felt the difference in power immediately, because most doesnt know how the factory tune their bikes according to regulations set by whoever.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly! The manufacturer has to meet localized EPA standards, which will not be the optimum air/fuel ratio for your exact location, your exact fuel and your riding style. Just like in the old days, the very first thing discerning riders did was purchase a Jet-Kit. Modern Fi is certainly more adaptable that carbs, but they can always be made better. :)

    Very useful information thanks. I am not too much experienced with powerful motorbikes. Recently bought a brand new Yamaha FZ-10 2017 model. 3000 miles done so far, Quite enjoying the stock version. I do not do track days or push the bike to its limit.
    I really wish if my bike is bit more louder. When I say louder heavy bass beat. I am planning to go for the American made value for money option Delkevic exhaust with middle pipe. That makes the bike lot cleaner IMO.
    From the comments and answers I understand I have to do the following in the same sequence.
    1. Get the exhaust installed myself
    2. Install a better air filter like K&N.
    3 take my bike to flash my ECU and the dyno tuned.
    4 not planning to install any power commander.

    Why doesn't the O2 sensors compensate and adjust the fuel trim when they see the bike going too lean? That's what cars do...O2 sensor sees too lean at a given RPM and tells the injectors to add more fuel..bring the level to where it should be. If that's the case why don't people get reflashes on cars when they add an intake and exhaust?

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Motorcycle systems are simpler, and motorcycle engines are more sensitive because they run in a higher state of tune. The O2 sensor basically just operates within the parameters of a pre loaded map based of a certain fuel type, temperature, humidity, and a certain elevation. This is why a lot of European bikes struggle when they come to the US; because the base-map was built using European fuels (without Ethanol).

      +Steven N. Some systems, and some methods allow them to change the air/fuel ratio's. Not all of course; which could be part of your confusion. So it depends on your motorcycle more than anything else. For example, on my personal Multistrada, I can have the ECU reprogrammed to adjust air/fuel ratio's as well as even add cruise control. But on my old SV650, the only way to update the air/fuel ratio's was a piggy-back system like a dyno-jet.

    very good explanation. never really understood what this thing is. question though. in your experience how much power is left unused (in percentage of total improvement) if you are aiming for improved ride feeling? Also am i right to think, that whatever gains you get from remapping, on a stock bike, they would not really make a huge difference in hp numbers?

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can sometimes get as much as 15% improved power based on what the state of tune was where you started. But the key factor is to improve drivability and protect the motor for longevity. But if you measure in lap-times and not just hp/torque numbers, most riders will see an improvement in lap times because a good tune makes the bike easier to ride. The throttle ramps into the power more smoothly and bike will pull strongly in a wider ranger of RPM.

      I can confirm at least for cars. My STi had an "off the shelf tune". Had pretty bad turbo lag, you could feel the car throw you back after going wide open throttle, and then a few seconds later it throws you back even harder when the boost kicks in. After I got dyno tuned by one of the best in my tri state area, it's much much smoother, the lag isn't as extreme and honestly I have to keep looking down at my boost gauge to see if I'm even getting out of vacuum.

In stock form I could get over 50 mpg when needed and averaged 45 mpg touring. After slip ons and dyno tune, I lost about 7 or 8 mpg from what I was getting stock. Most of us are not necessairly looking for the most power, but a pipe _with_ a tune can make the bike run worlds better. Smoother off the bottom, more linear power delivery and in many case, you will see an improvement in mileage as well.

      @@Zeryyn I ended up using the Leo Vince LV pro with Akrapovic headers though I had to do a little modification to make them fit together. Doing that swap shaved off 20 lbs from the bike. Still running the O2 sensor. The cat, bread box, etc is gone. I just need to do the block off plates and a get a tune on the ECU eventually. Love the sound of it. SC project makes some great exhaust sounds once you get headers on it. Slip on doesn't do much for sound but it does shave some weight off.

      @AZ_PIT_VIPER yeah the slip on is pretty quiet unless i give it some decent gas, so i really want it a bit louder but im just worried that if i end up decattong it and not tuning it that i end up making my engine run lean and the bike doesnt do what its supposed to

    hi sir i got a question, i just put on a slip on exhaust for my 2017 honda cbr1000rr and its really jerky down low rev and i feel like its running lean... my question is , getting my bike dynotune to make it run smooth is good enough?? and do i need to get an ecu flash with it??? does the tuner include the power commander add on to get it tune ??? i only use it on the raod 99% and no track. thank you sir

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't do it, honestly. Most modern airboxes are tuned to flow more air faster than no airbox at all. When you cut open an airbox, a lot of times you go backwards. Pod air filters often times work on older, simpler carbureted bikes, but unless you have good information saying otherwise, with modern bikes you usually just make it run worse.

      Well if your goal is to be loud, then throw a straight pipe on it realizing the bike will never run as well. But if you want to make the bike run as well as you can, get a tuned exhaust from a reputable vendor, a free flow air filter, a power commander and a dyno tune. The Bolt only makes 42hp, which isn't a lot. Thats like Ninja 400 territory. In my humble opinion, If your goal is a faster, more powerful bike, then I'd simply purchase a faster, more powerful bike.

    What does a dyna tuner do exactly? I thought they just gave you information about your bike after running it through a series of tests. Or will they do the adjustments you need as well? I'm new to motorcycles. Recently bought a 75 CB750 that doesn't have the OG exhaust. Trying to figure out how tune it correctly. It runs good, but I want to make sure it's at its most opitmal tuning.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A Dynomometer has a bunch of sniffers that can read the exaust to know if it's rich or lean. So in the case of your CB, one dyno run will tell the tuner that it's running rich of the pilot jet, lean off the needle and really lean off the main jet. So they take the bike apart, change the jets, needle and needle height. Do another run and it says it's good everywhere, but a little rich on the main jet (or whatever), the make one last change and you have a perfectly tuned bike.
      Vs doing it yourself, where you make your best guess based on what the bike does at different thottle positions, go out and ride, its worse, so you guess again, take everything apart, make changes, put it back together go for another ride; it's better here, but worse there. Go home take it apart, make changes, put it back together, go for another ride, now its worse where it was better and way worse there and you fouled your spark plugs, so you go home... and so on and so on and so on.
      If your bike has FI, the Dyno interfaces with the ECU (or a piggyback system like a Power Commander) makes the changes in real time, and the tuner can see and make adjustments at, like, 100 different points.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ideally, yes. But an ECU flash alters the air/fuel ratios without actual data about exactly how your bike is running. An ECU flash is better than not doing anything, but a dyno-tune with an ECU flash is the best option.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any time you make changes to the intake/exhaust system of an engine, you will need to adjust the air/fuel ratio to accommodate the difference amounts of air that are coming and leaving your motor. Some changes may seem to be really small, but could have a significant impact on how much motor your engine has to work with. An exception may be if you live at high-elevation where there is less air to begin with.

    Of course he’s going to tell you that you need to tune your bike with a little processor that cost $500. He’s a representative of a company that makes a lot of money advising you to “be on the safe side” and take measures to guarantee that nothing will never, ever, happen to your bike. Slip ons are a piece of metal slightly altering the sound of your exhaust, seems a bit extreme. You think people are buying a programmer for $500 after buying exhaust on eBay for $129. Give me a break. Ask this question away from a representative to get a reasonable answer.
