I vividly remember the way we use to break our heads in making ppt slides for our assignments but a simple change of working in collaboration and simultaneously at one place reduces our efforts and maximizes the leverage. Thanks Dr. Shrinivas Gondhalekar for brilliant video.

I saw this video some 3 months ago and decided not to comment until I had implemented it. I have applied it in my organisation and the results are tremendous. In today's scenario, a manufacturing firm has very little time to react to customer's demands. Not producing as per the sales team requirement leads to market share loss. Using techniques like this one, the production losses have almost reached zero. Simple yet very powerful!

I have often seen in my work place that we tend to work as Isolated units and end up spending more time on a task . Here the handing over of work is essential . A coordination between the stakeholders clears up all the doubts and smoothens up the process . It leads to customer delight

    Dear Sir,
This video demonstrates actual work scenario we follow. We just want to finish the work with or without resolution.Time consumed by internal employees directly affects the business of the company.Employees should realize that the ultimate goal is benefit & business for the company we are working for.Proactive Behavior is a must in every employee. We should all have sense of belonging towards the company we work for.
This short video reminds me of the appreciation i used to get in my previous organization, I was approached by my manager to "Get the job done".

'team work'-it should be in the DNA of an organisation to work efficient and effective manner.A successful organisational structure and a good team leader can create this approach and the clarity of thought which reduces the lead time. departments physically located far has a location barrier unlike the video but today's technology has allowed to successfully implement this approach by using Skype,e-mails,Google drive and smart phones which allows better fast and clear communication in the office environment. thank you sir.

While working together any doubts can be clarified immediately rather than the issue going back and forth and it maintains good relationship with peers helping organisation and each other. In my previous organization in our induction I was taught that you should always try to call the person before doping an email. It creates a social network that resonates throughout the organization. The video is of great learning with a simple example.

This video reminds of my boss who always told us that do not waste time in communicating by email with your team members. instead, clear out the issue by involving everyone face to face. This method should be used everywhere, as it eliminates time wastage in errors and clears out issues then and there itself. Thank You Sir

We make so many errors on a day to day basis due to working in a sequential form , which has been so accurately depicted through this example. This is also a great example of how to encourage team work and increase productivity.

Dr. G sir,I can relate this with one real example which I came across at my workplace. When I used to send the purchase order to the customer we used to write our customer ID number at the end of the mail. The company being the user of SAP an ERP package missed out to enter the customer ID and we were not able to get the offered discount. This small mistakes created the sequential mail communications and delayed the consignment by 3 days. Then we had Minutes of meeting & team working with the customer and came out with a small KAIZEN of writing the customer ID in the subject of the mail. This reduced our sequential working method and increased our office productivity along with the assembly productivity with on time delivery of goods from customer.
This video is perfect example of reducing our lead time and utilizing it in some other productive ways. thank you sir for sharing your valuable wisdom with us.

I came across a similar situation in my previous job but never realized that this technique is so productive. There always used to be miscommunication between our team in Mumbai and our manager in Chennai. Productivity was being hampered when the conversation just stayed on emails, then we thought of doing a video or audio conference call looping all the team members wherein we would discuss all the important and urgent issues. this helped us improve our stand to a great extent.

Having faced the perils of sequential working at my previous workplace, I understand how much effort and time and lag we induce in our work.. The traditional practice of sequential working still happens across the organizations in our country. Having worked for an IT company for 3 years we wasted a lot of time in sequential working.
The Team work methodology is a very good eye opener to save a lot of time and finish the work effectively and quickly. Kudos to the team for such a concept.

Recently in my summer internship there was an excellent office layout where there were no cubicles and departments. For a particular project all the team members from different fields like designing, engineering, management etc would all sit together in a single room with the prerequisite set up and thus this helped all of us avoid miscommunication and save a lot of time rather than wasting time in documentation and verification

This concept can even be applied in the case of teams. When i helped in organizing an event for my graduate college, i was part of the PR team. We had to not only co-ordinate with the other teams but also with the professors and explain to them why we have done tasks in a certain way.
This helped in reducing the time and made organizing the event a pleasant task

Somehow sequential working has always been the chosen path for accomplishing tasks in most organizations. But as always, the unconventional way of looking at a task at hand, proves to be more efficient, yet again. Thank you sir for bringing another dimension to our perspectives and for broadening our view of mundane as well as complex tasks!

This video is particularly helps in today's work environment, where people try to cut down on the human interaction part and instead assume everything in the mail will be understood and interpreted correctly by all team members.
To quote an example, in my workplace we used to daily stand up meetings(for each team) to discuss the task mails that all received and this method helped everyone to have a clear idea about the tasks and to discuss any doubts.
    Thank you Sir.

Working together as a TEAM definitely leads to reducing the lead time. TEAM for me is Together Everyone Achieve More. In my previous organization where I served as Design Executive,I observed the lack of coordination between departments be it Quality, Production, Testing, Logistics and many others. With the difference in the work style and different priorities, production efficiency suffers. But Management always ensured that Inter-departmental relationship strengthens and every individual worked for a sole motive of organisation being benefited the most.Daily morning meetings where all the departmental heads sits together and decided the proceedings for the day. This brought significant change in the work environment and the organisation looked more like a family.

This video really helped me to realise the benefit of team work and to know the problems associated with working in isolation. The overall process becomes more faster because of clarity in messages and thoughts.
The illustration using the couting of notes was very easily relatable. Sequential working is one thing anyone can think of eliminating in any of the processes.

Sir,I learned through this video that how reduction in lead time and improved productivity can be achieved by replacing sequential working with working together, resulting in customer delight. From an HR perspective, this increases communication and eliminates the working of individuals as isolated islands. An observation which affirms the idea of this video is when we prepare presentations together as a group, the outcome is much better than when each is assigned a part and works in isolation.

    Dear sir,
I worked with the IT company. Where we have used platform called jira for managing tasks.Testing team used to add the bugs or defects into the jira which is then resolved by us. Most of the time the requirements used to be insufficient to us. Due to which we were not delivering well. But later we came up with the idea of having conference call directly with the testing team for better understanding of the issues which leads to increase in the productivity of our team (development team).

This kind of scene is often seen at the workplace with the excessive reliance on technology. It is often mistaken that use of technology improves productivity, but simple adaptation at work place can improve productivity and customer satisfaction. Sir, the concept of office productivity was brilliantly shown.
I have personally seen some of the bus conductors using this method. They count each note separately and hand it over to me. I do not check it again as I have already seen them counting and do not feel the need to recount.
In college while we work in groups for various projects, I have noticed its always better to work together. When we work alone at home, there are lesser ideas.
So the 2 methods mentioned are actually helpful!!

Lack of patience and presence of mind usually leads to such chaos. Patience bcoz we don't read the whole msg and lack of presence of mind bcoz we either forget to write PFA or don't understand the importance of keeping the msg crisp and clear. These days, both of them are lacking at some point of time. So, I appreciate this method of saving time and chaos. Sticking to the basics, again is one of the learnings from the video.

Sir we often learnt in our text books that division of labour enhances efficiency but we never noticed that sequencial work eats up a lot of time and effort, where as working together eliminates our mistakes at a very first stage. So, the work which can be completed in little time takes a lot of productive time & affects employees' productivity. Once cashier gave me money,I stood there & count notes for conformation, it not only consumed my time but also time of people in raw & cashier;Whereas in other bank where cashier counted money on currency counting machine & result of that was visible to me through separate indicator. As a result I took money from cashier & left the place after thanking him, this process saved time of all the stakeholders involved.

The stereotype people will always prefer sequential working as it define what to do and how much to do.They won't put extra effort to do things differently and efficiently. These people do the same work every time and later, get bored of their jobs. The best way of creating enthusiasm in an employee is through the above illustrated way of working together.Working as a team gives you different ideas as well as increases productivity. All the present Startups work with the same idea of working as a team. This helps in coordinating with various people working together to achieve the common goal. The top level management people work with the same ideology which provide better knowledge as well as enhance the efficiency of the firm.Thank you Dr.G for elaborating the power of "Team Work"

This concept of Working together is beneficial for Customer as well ( as the Delivery is expedited) & also for the office environment. A very common error noticed remarkably. Happens in most of the cases when different departments have to work sequentially and a simple error made by one department has a impact on the overall lead time, which eventually results in customer dissatisfaction. Having been the project coordinator then, I too had to face a lot of situations like this. Thanks for sharing this concept. One can also make his/her life simple by using this in college while working with the peers.

Hello sir, This video reflects the true picture of how various Indian organisations and corporates work even today.. The people working in various verticals within the organisation perform their job in isolation, and follow a typical sequential method, due to which there is no proper communication and thus delay in delivery. The need of hour is to reduce the lead time so as to improve the productivity. With usage of Japanese method of working, a lot of this time can be managed to optimize the benefits. This holds true everywhere. Thank you for sharing the video.

I had experienced a similar situation during my Engineering internship. Me along with my fellow trainee were working on a design and analysis project of an auto component. He had the responsibility to work on design part using CAD and I had to do the analysis part using certain tools to validate the results. Initially we worked as separate entities, he did the design , mailed me and I had to do the analysis. However due to minor errors, we didn't get the desired results and this continued for few more times resulting to delay in work. Instead we devised a plan to work together and complete the task at one go. We both gave our inputs to each other, this increased transparency, mutual understanding grew and there developed a sense of team work. Finally we got our desired results and learnt new skills and techniques as well. Thus "Working together" instead of "Working sequentially" certainly bears good fruit

In one of my project we have a onsite coordinator which connects our offsite team with the client. This creates lot of miscommunication between the teams and we were not able to deliver on time. Earlier when we were not working sequentially then we used to do delivery always on time and no such priority production defects used to come. This is really a very good video for people who do not understand how things should work in an organisation

I have been the victim of the same in many cases in my previous organization. The continuous throwing of the ball in others court resulted in just safeguarding your own stand in front of your boss but ultimately delaying the main objective of the task.
But this on contrary when working together solved it at a faster rate then just shooting mails. Though it can't be implemented every time but can be used whenever possible.

    Respected Sir
I greatly enjoyed your session and the videos.
My learning from these videos are:
1)Division of labor increases inter-dependency of one entity (person, department or even company) on another and any problem or defect in one part may cause disturbance or
dislocation in the entire process of production.
    2) Redundancy of work leads to more confusion and time mismanagement.
    3) Reduces role of individual in the production process leading to decline in his ability.

Thank you sir for sharing this video. Discussing the issues or getting clarifications face to face is certainly more effective as one can
easily communicate and get the counter questions clarified at that very moment leaving no chances of ambiguity. I used to often see many colleagues wasting
considerable amount of time trying to explain tasks and logic over the communicator and
most of the times they used to end up getting confused further.

While dealing with Distribution centre for delivery schedules and orders, written communication was used only as a referrence document for future purposes, but the real transaction was through telecons so that everyone is clear and no miscommunications happen through misinterpretations. Even when dealing with the customers in cash handling at the counter, the process was to count the cash and announce it to the customer so as to cross verify the amount received and paid, which helped us to reduce false transactions and discrepencies.

This is a simple yet very vital technique.......The sequential working style is in almost every organisation in west as well as in India as a result a lot of time is wasted in playing mail-mail even within a division...instead this is a technique really would be productive to eliminate issues and cater best to customers.......

I had come across a similar situation when I was working for an IT company and had to co-ordinate with a team located at another location.
Due to the lack of communication there were a lot of gaps in the intention of a particular mail being sent and the intent of reception.
This gap caused a lot of problems. Then I made it a practice to always call up the sender of the mail and ask him doubts if any.
Verbal communication made things simpler and explained the same to my team. Also I made sure not all called up the sender, 1 person, mostly me, called up the sender and then passed on information further. This also lead to an increase in transparency along with increase in the productivity.

Most of the times we do not realize there can be such simple ways of doing things more efficiently. Just by working in a collaborative manner we can not only save on time and cost but also efforts. The efforts saved can be utilized else where thereby further increasing productivity.

    Respected Sir,
I worked in backend operations of an organisation and was one of the person responsible to communicate with the client. The standard operating procedures put forth by the organisation for resolving a particular issue required sequential working and on the top of that, different internal departments situated miles apart had their own sequential working style and response time. I could observe the "information silos", and being the point of contact to the client, I was having trouble collating the information and providing a satisfactory resolution as soon as possible after the initial enquiry. Hence I strived to break the silos by having meetings with the higher managers and advocated that the every internal department is provided with access to an integrated workflow system instead of emails so that the client gets a real time outlook of how and when the resolution is reached and different departments work as a real team paving way to happy clients.

It was fantastic and impressive. Also enjoyable!
By the way, in our workplace in Africa, they are not capable enough to send documents back and force. They don't know about truck change function of WORD, etc. IT literacy is low so that they need to work in front of PC together. But this indicates our current way of working is better.
Engaging customer in the process is the key. I remember that Dr. G said customer at Okonomi Yaki restaurant will not complain because they cook themselves.

Thank you for this video Sir. We were taught to employ this technique while explaining the software codes to our clients located at UK and Korea. Since the written English is very different from what is understood at Korea, and since we worked in shifts, it was easier for us to share the screen and discuss the code on a phone call using VOIP. Written conversations confirm that communication has been made. Hence, we used to prefix our mails with “As discussed on phone”. This reduced misinterpretation and instilled further trust.

Thank u Sir for sharing this video. Working together is definitely better than sequential working. I have seen that most often oral and visual communication scores over written communication as it gives a clear picture of the task in hand and also saves time and energy spent on making sure that the receiver has understood the task properly.

Great video that shows how an otherwise ignored task could be done more efficiently by doing it right. Though this is done in an office set up, this can be applied in a hotel context too. As i hail from a hospitality background, during my work experience, we had many tasks that were sequential in nature too. For example,in the kitchen dept. one had to place orders for requisition of items on a regular basis. In such tasks,as shown in the video, many a times the process gets elongated due to misunderstandings, miscommunication etc. By using the technique suggested by Sir and working in a team, the bottlenecks caused due to delay of food materials could be reduced or even eliminated.

This concept of replacing sequential working with working together is much needed in todays scenario..this is time saving plus it also clears out various doubts that each of the person or the department has and it would ultimately fasten the process of achieving targets without conflicts and would also enhance relationship between the parties indulged in any kind of work..

Sequential working happens all over the corporates and due to which works are delayed and there is confusion and mess. Instead working together may help to fast forward the work and due to this productivity increases.

Concurent consulting is anyway better than sequential consulting, because it removes delays due to pending communication.Above that clarity in goal and hence clarity in the mutual role expectation of the employees can only be achieved by working together.Hence it improves the productivity by reducing the delay involved in decision making constructively.Acheiving sync b/n capacity and target is more easy if decision making involves all of the concerned.

I have seen this happen frequently in my earlier organization and during my summer internship. I definitely keep email use to the minimum level possible.
I had read a few tips about increasing your office productivity by sending less emails.
I would like to share them here.
1.Send less and get less emails.
    Cut the email time.
    Boost the email quality.
2.Strengthen the subject and the sculpt the body of every email you write.
    3. Share insights with your colleagues
    4. Use email only when its necessary.
This will save at least 15 days a year time spent over emails.

I could relate the handing off money example with the way a receptionist in a five star hotel returns the change amount by counting in front of the guest to avoid arguments.
Productive way of working is always better than Sequential working; it decreases your lead time.

Dr. G, thanks for creating this simple but powerful video. Kindly share your comments on the route I have devised to create team work system in my company:
    1. Enlist the roles & responsibilities of all human resources in the organisation.
    2. Create process maps for each and every department within the company. The process maps can further be broken down into multiple tasks within every department.
    3. Identify tasks & roles which are interdependent on each other. Similarly, tasks which are part of a sequence and need more than 1 departments involvement to be completed. Likewise, create a clear list of tasks which can be or need to be performed in isolation.
    4. Once the tasks are identified in step 3, the manager must convene a meeting with the team members, presenting the findings & lay down new mandate for tasks that require people to work in teams.
    5. Provide the support & infra to enable resources to work in teams. Ensure collective responsibility is taken along with a comprehensive reporting structure to sustain the practice.

Due to sequential system there are delays and errors in the work, instead if in the office spaces we have transparency and no cubicles and cabin the workforce can work as a team then and there and increase the efficiency as well as reduce the delays, this also improves the relationship with the customers. Why create complications if the work can be done easily and smoothly by just eliminating sequential system and adopting team work method.
Thank you Dr. G and the team for an insightful video

    Sir,
The learning from this video is that we must avoid sequential working where ever possible. It increases the lead time. For increasing productivity it is necessary that the involved parties must have clear understanding, good communication and cooperation.
