    What was your favorite moment from this cover?? IMO one of Geoff's best arrangements ever -- I never expected an acapella version of this piece to work so well! Brilliant work to Geoff and VP 👏

    • @toddreed882
      @toddreed882 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      My favorite was the build up to and then the chord just before Layne started playing on the violin…then of course, the violin solo.

    • @mtjc5336
      @mtjc5336 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve never heard the original but now I gotta look it up. The intense vioLayne section was really nice but I can’t decide whether the chord RIGHT before the violin came out is my favorite section, or Geoff’s solo a bit earlier. It was very nice and it’s incredible how he transitions between notes (the low G). Seamless

    • @Gael4ce
      @Gael4ce ปีที่แล้ว +13

      *splutters* Favorite moment?!? Like…one?! Ok dude, the one bit between the first and last notes? 😝😂
      Seriously though…when Layne first drops that beat you know it’s about to get real. Then they build up and up and then there’s this light floaty moment where Cesar and Geoff try to con you into thinking things are calming back down(didn’t fool me. I’ve heard enough of Geoff’s arrangements to know he puts more than one sucker punch in if at all possible) and then they just explode.
      First time I heard it, I think I quit breathing when Layne dropped the beat. I know I got dizzy well before the violin and realized I needed to breathe again.
      This arrangement just HITS in all the right feels. I loved the original. but I’m not sure I’ll bother playing it again. It. ever grabbed me by the threat and shook me like VoicePlay just did.
      The original never put tears in my eyes. This one does.

      @Snapdragonflie ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My favorite section is from when they're all harmonizing "All these words I don't just say..." to the end of the Violayne part. Of course, if I have to pick just one moment, I'd go with the majority on the "YEAH! BOOM VioLAYNE!" Literal chills.

    • @Gael4ce
      @Gael4ce ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Snapdragonflie They just released a Violayne t-shirt. The front says “Violayne” with their logo replacing the o, and back says “a capella: It’s better with instruments”.
      I laughed out loud for real on that. And then I bought one.

    Your expression when VioLayne happened was worth the whole reaction. This cover broke most of the reactors. I think Geoff did an epic arrangement for this one. I love how in the description of the video they even call him VioLayne! And it's always great to see J. None when he's on leave. He may not technically be an official member of Voiceplay at the moment, but you can tell he's still a member at heart. ✌️❤️🥕🎻

  • @maudglazbrooke1287

    A collab of you and The Charismatic Voice doing a vocal analysis would be insanely incredible on like a vocal analysis/ reaction to like Voiceplay, Pentatonix, or Home Free. Man, that be killer vocal analysis collaboration duo.

  • @bjspeck4337
    @bjspeck4337 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    Geoff had done a guitar solo for Layne that shows toward the end of Metalllica's piece. At the last minute Geoff wanted Layne to do it with the violin which I thought was just perfection. It colored all the high notes that J, Eli and Cesar were absolutely knocking out of the park. To me, VP really paid homage to the original while keeping their version intact. Just spectacular. I was happy that we finally got VioLayne 3 yrs after Warriors.

  • @MuriKakari
    @MuriKakari ปีที่แล้ว +67

    I am so happy to see this. I couldn't wait to hear your take on it, especially since Charismatic Voice, Jennifer Glatzhofer and Mortius all completely geeked out over the technicalities of it. Just needed you to fill in on those arrangement and bass details. Plus, I really got the feeling you literally couldn't stop yourself from learning the song as they're singing it.

    This is my new favorite thing and I have to admit to being a snob, lol. I am a metal head. Have been my entire life. I couldn't see how an acapella group could do metal and of all metal, Metallica?! Well, I was wrong! Oh my gosh is this amazing! My mouth hit the floor so many times in this it was crazy! Voiceplay just stole my heart!

    I don't know how Geoff gets so close to a transcription *and yet* still makes the arrangement entirely its own. True artistry there. And yes, the runs were beautifully done - along with the playing with rhythm, texture and range

  • @tyghe_bright

    Maybe Geoff used to be a baritone, but as his voice has matured, he's definitely become a bass.

      @sjenny5891 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree.
      Voice Play did the Sing Off the year Home Free won it.
      The big emphasis was Tim being a crazy bass.
      Geoff has come a long way since then.
      If you go back to the old songs, you'll see how much more natural everything fits together now.

    • @sarahkinsey5434
      @sarahkinsey5434 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@sjenny5891 I wasn't a fan of the Sing Off lineup for Voiceplay. It was more focused on the female singer (I think her name was Honey?) and it would have been nice to have Geoff highlighted like Home Free did.

    • @ForeverDegenerate
      @ForeverDegenerate 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @tyghe_bright
      I could be wrong, but I believe Geoff mentioned he was a Tenor before his balls dropped. I also believe Tim Foust was the same. That's why they have such crazy vocal ranges. They abject refused to just let the "tenor within" die just because their bodies decided otherwise. Then they discovered that working so hard to preserve as much of their higher registers as possible actually made them even better bass singers.

    I love this. Would’ve like Cesar to get a little more “solo” time, but he does so well melding with the other voices, it’s still brilliant to hear him. And I’m a little biased. Dang, I love these guys! Great reaction again, by the way!

    • @DTA-Music
      @DTA-Music ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Me too, but Cesar very much made his presence felt and helped set the tone for this one by virtue of his uncharacteristic stillness and solemnity. So much so that some of us were a little worried the first time we saw it that there might be something wrong--he's usually so bubbly and animated.

    Geoff's arrangements often bring me to tears, and this is one of them. So beautiful. And his bass lines impress me as much as his singing voice. I find it incredible, so clean and solid. I've been collecting names that he has been given by reactors which include BassMaster 3000, G1 Geoff, Mr Bass-alicious, and the living legend that is Geoff Castellucci. :)

    Also…thank you for declaring Geoff a bass. The first time I heard him try to claim baritone, I found myself yelling “bullsh*!!” at the video. And I’ve muttered it under my breath every time he’s said it since. Nice to hear someone better educated than I am come to the same conclusion. I appreciate that affirmation! 😊

    I think the blending of the soloists is sacrificial. Both soloists have to sacrifice in order for it to blend well. This group does this beautifully. The fact that the violin section brought tears to your eyes, is just a fact that it has broke yet another reactor. I appreciate your analysis.

  • @maeco7
    @maeco7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    First, love the analysis! This is truly one of my favourite things VP has done to date. What a way to start off the year. Second, re the great "is Geoff a bass or baritone" debate: I know Geoff thinks of himself as a baritone because of where he starts being able to project notes (which at least used to be C#2, D2ish). How important is projection really when classifying a bass? He certainly sounds like one, just with the ease/clarity/weight with which he can hit those notes, but that's on mic. How much does off-mic volume matter?

I was wanting to hear your thoughts as a bass singer on this one because I feel like Geoff is all over the place in this piece, but in the most amazing way possible. I have been looking forward to your reaction and you certainly did not disappoint! Thank you for your excellent analysis and pointing out so many things that, others may have touched on but you expanded on.
    I’ve been trying to figure out why I love this so much although I don’t like metal. I did listen to the song and the song is amazing but I just don’t care for metal, so it didn’t appeal to me. I was trying to think of the adjective that describes the feeling I got. I kept thinking, wistful, melancholy, somber. But none of them really fit - intimate is the word I was looking for, and why it resonates so much with me.
    One of the things I truly love about VoicePlay is that each member has a distinctive voice. I really appreciate that. They let J’s soulful voice come out and didn’t try to make it “fit. Geoff has been reported as saying that you arrange for the voices you have, not the voices you want. And it works so well.
    I don’t know why, but my favorite moment is when Violayne does that crescendo into the high note and the guys pick it up. I don’t know if they’re hitting that same note, but the transition is Perfect.
    I never ever thought anything they did could beat Hoist the Colours as my favorite. And never in a million years would I think that my all-time favorite of theirs would be a song originally, and famously, covered by a metal group. But …VoicePlay - they’re magical.

    This is so great! And you're right. Geoff is a bass who trained (and continues to train) to keep the high notes. I don't know any baritone who can hit those notes with the ease that he does.

    • @MuriKakari
      @MuriKakari ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I wonder if that was something he thought when he was running around the Sing Off hanging out with Avi and Tim until he really started hitting those lower chest notes. Also, he's said he's a very quiet singer. I wonder if he called himself a baritone because that was where he could start projecting.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@MuriKakari, I believe it's because he didn't realize what his voice actually was... from so many years of wanting to be a rock tenor. I was the same way - in a way - until I first heard Geoff. I am a choral bass singer who always hung out above C2 (often above E2), despite having a chest voice that goes down to E1 and chest-fry to C#1. After I heard what these a cappella basses were doing, I decided to explore my own voice, and found it went MUCH lower AND higher than I ever thought possible.

    • @MuriKakari
      @MuriKakari ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@johndeeregreen4592 That makes a lot of sense. As a female singer, my voice had always been classified as an alto by choir directors, but I was similarly always able to go lower comfortably where as I was less comfortable with even just the top end of a normal alto range. So basically, he finally stopped claiming to be a baritone when he decided he actually wanted to be Thurl Ravenscroft instead of a Rock Tenor

    • @Stan_S_Stanman
      @Stan_S_Stanman ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In one of his Q&A videos, Geoff mentions he feels most comfortable in and around the C3-C4 range. But I think he was being modest, because like Peter said in this video, Geoff sounds super comfy down to E2 or D2 as well.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Stan_S_Stanman, it's not just that he doesn't sound strained but that his thickness is there, too. Plenty of baritones can hit E2 and bass-baritones can get down to normally a D2, but Geoff sounds thick and unstrained even at a C2 (the normal dividing line for a bass versus a bass-baritone).

    This is my favorite Metallica song,and they knocked it out to of the park, with a Voiceplay flare. Thank you for a great reaction. I do have to agree with you...Geoff is a Bass who can still access his tenor range, just like Tim. I mean, his speaking voice is lower than yours... But he is still an awesomely amazing singer, and arranger. When I saw this drop, I was wondering how they would do all of the guitar solos....and they did.

      You'd be surprised how similar metal can be to classical music. Highly technical, very dramatic, complicated arrangements. Though not with a lot of the more mainstream metal. Look into bands like Nightwish, Epica, Ayreon(not actually a band more of a metal meets musical theater thing).

    To me a good cover, whether acapella or not, puts the person listening in mind of the original. It let's you remember what you loved about the original, relive moments of that, and see things from a slightly different perspective. Eli, for all that I love his "rock god" voice, isn't James Hatfield. Only James Hatfield is James Hatfield. And JNon, with those little riffs he put into the second line, reminded me of the original so very much. Hatfield, for all that he has a pleasant voice, isn't a "singer", per se. So he tends to waver when he tries to hold a note. Hearing JNon do that, on purpose, was really a cool homage, I felt.

My favorite part of this particular video, , J , Eli & Cesar hitting all the notes, leaning back, feet coming off the floor, fist balling up, Yeah” 😀😀😀😀then the violin in thrown into the mix , I really cannot distinguish the high notes between Caesar & Eli in any event this is a masterpiece. Geoff is awesome, and this arrangement is brilliant, but I have to say for myself that I was very excited to see Eli get a chance to shine with that Rock God tenor of his. This is the VoicePlay I love, when they can just sing and elevate a song and not over-use the extremes of their voices, which they have occasionally done in earlier arrangements. And I know I have seen a few people in comments have a “That’s not a cappella!” meltdown about the violin but they need to take a chill pill, all of the big a capella groups drop in an occasional instrument when it’s called for.
