    First, check the shower subfloor with a level. In this example our shower floor sloped a bit. We address how to fix this problem later.
    The drain pipe should be set by a professional or plumber. It needs to be 1/8" above the subfloor.
    Mix modified thin-set according to the manufacturer's directions.
    Mapei's Kerabond T was used and we added Keralastic to make it a modified thin-set.
    Burn the thin-set onto the wood subfloor using the flat side of a 1/4" x 1/4" square notched trowel. Then use the notched side to trowel more thin-set onto the subfloor. Directional troweling is recommended, i.e. trowel notches face the same direction.
    We applied a thicker layer of thin-set on the sloped side of the shower subfloor to correct it.
    Back butter the wedi Fundo Primo shower pan with the flat side of the trowel and Kerabond/Keralastic. Also, use directional troweling with the notch side of the trowel on the back of the Fundo Primo shower pan.
    The notches on the back of the shower pan should be in the same direction as the notches on the subfloor.
    Embed the Wedi Fundo Primo into the thin-set on the subfloor and compress the trowel notches by walking on the pan.
    Check the pan is level then apply a copious amount of Wedi Joint Sealant on the pan's rabbet joint. Add Wedi Joint Sealant to the curb's rabbet and apply thin-set to the bottom of the curb.
    Embed the curb into the shower pan's rabbet and compress the Joint Sealant. Check the Wedi Lean curb for level.
    Finally, add the rubber gasket and pipe connection.

    It is nice to see the realities of construction as opposed to the “perfect” constructions that you often see on tv. Nice work Steve.

      Thanks Jeff. Ya, there’s no such thing as perfect like on some tv shows. Especially in older homes. Fortunately this one was only 30 years old, so it was in good shape

    I was not aware that the Wedi needed to be thin set on the subfloor.. Glad I spent the time watching your videos. Only instructions are on the box. This is a very expensive system but when the only time you have is after work and you need to get the bathroom up and running it sure helps.

    Hello! We are super beginners and are happy to find your videos. We have some questions and would appreciate your very specific answers!
    1. What kind of mortar do you recommend for successful installation of the Wedi shower pan and for the subsequent tile on top including grout? Do we use a different grout or just mortar on the shower floor?
    2. What specific kind of mortar & grout do you recommend on the Wedi shower walls prior to installing tile?
    3. How many hours do we wait until the mortar sets before applying grout?
    Thank you kindly and I will look for your answers!

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      modified thin-set to set the shower pan and to set tile over the pan/boards, eg Ardex X5 for the pan and shower pan tile. Ardex X77 thin-set for Shower wall tile. Typically wait 24 hours before grouting tile, eg set tile today and wait until tomorrow to grout. Choose grout based on grout joint thickness and type of tile. We like Mapei FA for most tile. If you’re doing a similar installation our Bathroom Repair Tutor Video Library is fantastic and will show step-by-step how to build the shower in this video 👍🏼 bathroomrepairtutor.com

    Wedi doesnt recommend "building up" the thinset..., rather you should pour a floor leveler, 1/4" x 1/4" thinset on the floor, 1/4" thinset on the back of the pan in the same direction. Feathering doesn't ensure a 100% coverage, possibly leaving voids this voiding the Wedi warranty.

    Thank You for the awesome videos on installing a Wedi system, I've learned a ton from all of them. I'm now at the point of needing to buy modified thinset. I saw in several of your videos that you used a couple different types of thinset with Wedi... Ardex x5, Kerabond/Keralastic, etc. Home Depot is the closest store in my area and they cary Flexbond. Would FlexBond Fortified Thinset Mortar be OK to use with Wedi? Thanks again!

    After installing the Wedi shower system, what to do next? Is this Wedi thing just a replacement for cement boards etc? Do we still need to install regular shower pans/ tub or put on tiles? I am confused. This does not look like the final working shower?

      I had trouble getting the pipe in and the rubber sleeve in place. It was hard to move the pipe so I could get the rubber gasket in place and the top piece threaded on. Finally after 20 minutes or so I stuck a hammer handle down the drain pipe and was able to pull it over to get that rubber gasket on and the top assembly to thread on correctly.

    What is the overall plan for this shower- a shower curtain or glass door? I don’t believe that the lean curb allows for screws that would be needed for a glass door- or did I read something wrong?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for asking Donn, we installed a glass door. Since the Lean curb is waterproof, we used one screw to anchor the U channel on the curb for the fixed section of glass. The door portion was secured to wood blocking through the tile using wall hinges. We can email you picture if you’d like a reference?

    Question on the drain - i didn't install the drain frame on my wedi - and my wedi sealant is dried up. I know you are to out sealant on the 4 corners to hold the wedi drain in place. My question is can i use anything else to hold the drain frame in place or should i order another tube of sealant? - Thanks for all your help!

    I am pouring self lever this week. After that, which mortar is ok to set my 3x5 wedi base? Large format, large tile, generic, so many kinds of mortar. Surely large vs small format would have to make some kind of difference. Please help me figure this out, I can't seem to find any answer on this.

    The question was previously asked about installing on a slab. My drain line is set in the slab without any cutout area so rather than jackhammer the slab I would like to just build it up to accommodate the drain assembly area. My question is what is the depth dimension required from the top of the slab to the bottom of the locking nut (assuming top of pipe is at the top of slab)

    The bottom of the drain appears proud of the bottom of the Wedi pan. The hole in the subfloor obviously accommodates it. How do you address a cement basement floor?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question Donn, the cement floor would need to also accommodate the 5” flange. Otherwise the pan won’t sit flush with the basement floor

    The drain pipe in my house is copper, would this drain system work with that?

    • @pescaenoregon7545
      @pescaenoregon7545 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      copper pipes are usually thinner so you would have to cut a piece off and use 1 1/4 to 2" fernco coupling to add a 2" piece of abs

    I’m all about new products and innovation, but this system just seems cost prohibitive. Durock with aqua defense would be a fraction of the cost and honestly doesn’t take much longer to install.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally understand your perspective. Where wedi shines is with custom showers, and needing the flexibility to work around odd pan sizes or locations. The boards also assist with showers that have windows or require custom niches. It truly is faster than cement board and allows installers to build more showers, which adds to the bottom line. Homeowners will also find it to be more user friendly than CBU. But like you said, it’s about weighing the options and seeing which system is best for a specific shower
