Had a brush in with cancer but doing well, the owner of the military museum bankrupted the business and Dave had to leave the site and eventually sold all of his tanks before moving to Sri Lanka to start a business which unfortunately failed and he’s now back on the Isle of Wight doing shot blasting, painting, light restoration and he’s available for work!!
If TH-cam was around when this was made, Dave would have had one of the biggest tank restoration channels, he had the personality to be in front of the camera.
While watching all the videos from this group I realized that the good wisdom of "Earn a living by doing something you love to do and you won't work a day in your life" is correct.

Have been to that museum its definitely worth a visit i had a great time there lovely people there who run it they are full of great information time flew when i was there planning to go back again next year . plus the isle of White is a lovely place to visit as well plenty to do and see.
Believe it or not aircraft engines were used in tanks because they were.... light (And powerful). You wouldn't think lightness matters in a tank but it did make a difference. The only downside is that they used petrol instead of much less flammable diesel. Aircraft engines were also proven reliable and easy to get. Hence why the Abrams uses a turbo-shaft engine. Very light and extremely powerful.
@@oscarmuffin4322 He meant the Comet and Meteor are similar names. Tho Comet name had to start with a letter C like all the Cruiser tanks. But how much of a coincidence it was? This tank was designed with a proven (in Cromwell) Meteor engine so the name Comet fits perfectly.
@@oscarmuffin4322 Yep power to weight factor is a prime consideration in many vehicles in the tanks case if you have a lighter power unit you can always add more and heavier armour.
I really liked Dave Arnold, and young Dave and the rest of Mr Arnold's team. They were doing excellent work but doing it tough with, apparently, little funding. I admired their work so much I dug around on the internet to see where I could send them some money towards their work. I was devastated to learn that Dave Arnold, for some reason, had to shut down the Isle of Wight Military Museum. There were snippits of old UK news stories about some kind of dispute about the owner of the land Dave's facility was on. Then I discovered that some other people had taken on the project and renamed it the Wight Military Museum etc. Then, that these new owners or operators had some kind of run in with the law and were barred from entering the premises. This is all really, really sad. Dave Arnold and his team were good men doing valuable work. I've tried to track down Dave Arnold but so far no luck. I'd like to think he's still in tank restoration somewhere. If anyone knows his whereabouts please let me know. Perhaps, with enough supporters he can get back into the tank business. It's so cruel to vandalize these 60-70 year old relics. There gorgeous war machines and don't deserve to be vandalized. Kids should learn not to destroy parts of these beautiful vehicles. I just want to warn you against those filters, allmost all of them up to the 90s and beyond contain asbestos, if the filter is somehow disturbed or degraded you could potebtially breathe it in, and you probably know the consequences. True. It breaks my heart every time I see Tanks used as targets. I have had to use them as demolition targets and often wish we could sell them or give them to restorers. Most are in great condition and some are in running order.

It’s not widely advertised as an attraction over there. It’s a bit like the Muckleburgh collection in Norfolk. Who’s ever heard of that, yet it’s the largest private military museum in the country.
If Bovington is South West of London then I was taught geography wrong! Bovington is in Dorset West of Poole and Bournemouth. It’s home of the Royal Armoured Corps with their firing ranges which goes out 2 miles at least into the sea!

Funny, I went to this tank museum last year. Got into a discussion with the guide as to who built most of the Meteor engines, Rolls Royce or Rover cars. It’s Rover, but he didn’t know that.

Kroil Penetrating Oil is amazing for issues like the ones you guys encounter daily. Kroil Creeps Into Millionth Of An Inch Spaces, Dissolves Rust (this sentence straight from their website). I don’t sell the product nor profit in anyway from saying my opinion about Kroil. Kroil works as described above and I use it all the time. Hope my suggestion helps your restoration projects.

46:12 what a nonsense. The soviet army took Berlin on 30th of April 1945 (the day Hitler shot himself). The 8th of May was the german surrender. I am from Berlin and my family lived there since WW1. My grandfather was a cook (grand chef) and a few weeks after the soviets conquered Berlin he started to work for them as a cook. The story is easy. My grandfather went to his old workplace in Schöneberg to recover his professional gear , knifes etc , which were his private property. The hotel with restaurant was surprisingly in good shape after the battle for Berlin. And beeing so , the soviets decided to put in the first "komandatura" for the military governor. My grandfather asking if he could recover his belongings became access to it , and asked for his profession he was hired on the spot by the soviet city commander. I have in my property the original permits from the soviets for my grandfather , so no soviet patrol would bother him in his movements all over Berlin. This Komandatura was in Schöneberg , what later become american Sector. The date of this permit was 31.5.45 So at this day the western allies didn´t have any game in Berlin. The a34 used Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot (APDS) which is far diffrent from the Fin Stabilised Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot you show which i belive was first used in 1961 by the T-62

I find it somewhat sad that there is still this "Reds under the bed atitude" alive and doing well when it comes to all things Russian. It should be remebered that Russia has never done anything to anyone else other than be the first into Germany by two weeks before anyone else, something that can hardly be described as a crime. The Russian tank may not be flavohr of the day, but it has to be said that it was a very good tank and proved its point on the battle field, regardless weather it was nice to ride in or not,,,, it should be remembered that it was not developed to be all set for sunday drive. The Comet regardless, was a very well made tank and had it been around earlier , may have changed thevdirection of the war. The Comet gun wasn't actually 77mm, it was 76mm. However, there were other British tanks with 76mm guns, but the one on the Comet took different 17pdr ammunition. So because you had two different types of 76mm ammo, so that even a quartermaster who wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer wouldn't mix them up, the 17pdr ammo was classified as 77mm as a convenient fiction.
I hope that guy is aware that the Abrams uses an American made L/44 wich is a German gun so he could have said it's the same as the L/44 but with a longer barrel called the L/55

Worked in heavy engineering all my working life, no compulsory ear protection first 30 years and I do have high frequency hearing loss. But the last 15 years or so I've never had so many ear infections. Plugs or cans are no good for your ears period. When you get to my age nobody has got anything to say worth hearing anyway.

Unfortunately this museum is a sad shroud of its old self after the ownership changed. I went there a year ago and it has gone downhill.

That was used in war time, you need recovery in combat and thats how you fixed things in the field.

The meteor engine was a detuned Merlin. In some cases it was literally a Merlin which had reached max air miles refurbished and used in a tank.

Rover produced approx 9,000 engines, Morris played a part also apparently.

To be fair, they were already largely familiar with the use and operation of tanks, but it's like putting the game that you've never played before, putting it on expert, and skipping the tutorial and jumping right into the fray.

The Brits went for 5.5 years before they were able to produce a good tank, although the Matilda & Valentines were pretty reasonable at the very beginning but soon became obsolete and outclassed.

46:12 what a nonsense. The soviet army took Berlin on 30th of April 1945 (the day Hitler shot himself). The 8th of May was the german surrender. I am from Berlin and my family lived there since WW1. My grandfather was a cook (grand chef) and a few weeks after the soviets conquered Berlin he started to work for them as a cook. The story is easy. My grandfather went to his old workplace in Schöneberg to recover his professional gear , knifes etc , which were his private property. The hotel with restaurant was surprisingly in good shape after the battle for Berlin. And beeing so , the soviets decided to put in the first "komandatura" for the military governor. My grandfather asking if he could recover his belongings became access to it , and asked for his profession he was hired on the spot by the soviet city commander. I have in my property the original permits from the soviets for my grandfather , so no soviet patrol would bother him in his movements all over Berlin. This Komandatura was in Schöneberg , what later become american Sector. The date of this permit was 31.5.45
So at this day the western allies didn´t have any game in Berlin. The famous "parade" you see at 46:15 was at 7th of september 1945 , more than 3 months later.

The a34 used Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot (APDS) which is far diffrent from the Fin Stabilised Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot you show which i belive was first used in 1961 by the T-62

I find it somewhat sad that there is still this "Reds under the bed atitude" alive and doing well when it comes to all things Russian.
It should be remebered that Russia has never done anything to anyone else other than be the first into Germany by two weeks before anyone else, something that can hardly be described as a crime.
The Russian tank may not be flavohr of the day, but it has to be said that it was a very good tank and proved its point on the battle field, regardless weather it was nice to ride in or not,,,, it should be remembered that it was not developed to be all set for sunday drive.
The Comet regardless, was a very well made tank and had it been around earlier , may have changed thevdirection of the war.

The Comet gun wasn't actually 77mm, it was 76mm. However, there were other British tanks with 76mm guns, but the one on the Comet took different 17pdr ammunition. So because you had two different types of 76mm ammo, so that even a quartermaster who wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer wouldn't mix them up, the 17pdr ammo was classified as 77mm as a convenient fiction.
I hope that guy is aware that the Abrams uses an American made L/44 wich is a German gun so he could have said it's the same as the L/44 but with a longer barrel called the L/55
I wonder, what if you grind off the bolt heads, remove the plate, work on the exposed threads of bolts, something to grab ? lots of rust penetrating oils?

Worked in heavy engineering all my working life, no compulsory ear protection first 30 years and I do have high frequency hearing loss. But the last 15 years or so I've never had so many ear infections. Plugs or cans are no good for your ears period. When you get to my age nobody has got anything to say worth hearing anyway.
