  • Tank Overhaul invites you into a world where military enthusiasts, collectors, and restorers combine their know-how with 21st Century technology to restore the greatest battle tanks of all time. From the original salvage, to the rebuilding process, to the history behind the innovations that made each machine great, watch as tanks worldwide are rebuilt to their former glory.
The Panther - Tank restorer Jacques Littlefield labors to add a rare German Panzerkampfwagen V Panther to his collection of over 300 military vehicles. Recovered from a riverbed in Poland, the badly mangled hulk presents an incredible challenge to the crew of experts, but also offers clues to the events on the fateful day of its destruction back in World War II.

Several of these programs could not be completed as each was a project "in progress" i.e. the tanks were not completed as they were filming parts (glimpses) of the entire rebuilding progression. The owner was also battling cancer and knew that he was going to loose his fight. Eventually, a major part of his collection was auctioned off to save the rarest of his vehicles for museum preservation - this is why several of these documentaries have "filler-like" information which adds little to the story and some are incomplete. We should be grateful for the information that was gathered during the rebuilding process and shared with the YT community.
    Ciao, L

Nothing new that I know about. A big problem that we have in the US is that some rich people have decided to buy vintage war equipment (tank, aircrafts, guns, ...) as a source of investment - pushing away the hobbyist, the history reenactments, and the memorabilia lovers. This is slowly eroding the hobby as these millionaires are more into speculation and maximizing profit at auctions. They are not in supporting part of our history or helping museums restore their collection. Some are even destroying equipment as to make their possession more rare and get higher price for them. So is human nature. Take care, Ciao, L

I still have grandpa's old axe. Ive had to replace the handle, and eventually the blade, but I still have it. But I get it - my father has spent his life restoring some of the rarest and most skeletal rusted vintage cars ever made, and much of the car parts he has had to reforge by hand, using tools that are no longer made. So I find huge restoration jobs like this just awesome - and Im so grateful there are people out there prepared to spend money on it. If I ever won lotto - you all will have unlimited finding from me! Thankyou for your hard work and financial investment.

I've been born in small city Kielce next to (approx. 12 km) from Bieleckie Młyny portraited in this episode. From the childchood, finding any WWII artefacts around the local villages was an absolutely normal things and lotts of stories was passing around about cannons, tanks and artilerry equipment dug in bog or in the fields. This tank recovered from this village was originally secured by Poland's ministry of archeology as the right owner of anything found in country of Poland 9even if excavated from Private lands!- It's the law there). If recovered, Ministry will pass it to national museums. Ripping the tank off the Ministry's hands for private collectors and taking abroad is usually with strong backhand support so please don't believe they just took it out from there... There is very specific and accurate regulations for this kond of findings, claiming an ownership of any artifacts so please don't believe that this excavation was a transparent deal...

It seems Polish military personnel destroyed the turret of this vehicle in the 50's and hauled several others in the area away for scrap. Maybe it's better this Panther left Poland. If we were to rigorously apply your logic, Poland is not the real owner, as it was originally German military equipment. It does seem interesting that now someone else has spent considerable time and money restoring it to factory fresh condition, some Polish person wants to claim ownership- AFTER all the work is done. Why don't they stop whining and find another wreck to restore- or does that sound too much like work?

Well I have completed only 1 restoration, my Churchill MKIII that I've had on my land for the past 70 years, it was in great condition when I found it in the swamp. All I needed to fix was the turret ring tracks and some wheels. Took me 9 months to fix and everything was in perfect condition except for what I told you. Rust was removed and she fired her main gun one last time before having the pin removed. If I want i can put it back in because I used to make guns and military weapons. I named her the lucky Lucy because of how lucky I was to have a tank in great condition and to just catch a glimpse of it in my eye. World War II is a subject I've studied well beyond what most bachelor degrees in history require since I was old enough to read. Hearing the stories from BOTH sides of the war from family members growing up really influenced the way I view the accuracy of history as the state teaches it. I had a few relatives in the Waffen SS on the German side and Army Rangers and 2nd Armored on the other. It was quite a weird experience during the very rare times we actually had a family reunion of sorts (usually for a wedding). Unfortunately, it doesn't take long to discover that the history of World War II taught in school and even college is biased and covered up with many widely accepted lies from the Allied perspective.

    • @brianconnor1810
      @brianconnor1810 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agreed. The people, who claim to be the victims have falsified history for their own gains. Germans and white Europeans to be the hated enemy, False flag claims to steal a country from the people who live there and put them into small strips of land with imbargos on them. Who is the race of cruel people here, certainly not the Germans. Today we are now seeing this playing out in all white countries now being diluted to extinction.

Also the Panther is actually weak on the side armor where a T34 or M4 Sherman can maneuver around and flank penetrate the side armor of the panther , General George S Patton’s M4 Sherman crews caught on the panthers weakness with just the 75 mm short barrel gun and the 76 mm guns fielded on the Sherman’s got even better against the panther

"early engines of the Panther came with a serious design flaw"
that's clearly an understatement, afterall for their very first deployment (at Kursk) 2 Panthers caught on fire while being unloaded from the train, that's how badly it was simply because they did not spend nearly enough time testing it and solving whatever problems may arize before sending them to the frontlines
just for better context, in the 1950's the US Army designed and built a heavy tank designated M103, that very own heavy tank went for trials and a list with hundreads of problems was made about it, before they entered service all the tanks produced until then had to be overhauled to correct those problems, that's exactly what failed with the Panther throughout it's service life, they were simply unprepared

Panther ...was a formidable machine with sloped armor which I think was influenced to some point from the Russian t 34 & incorporated a high velocity gun the problem was it's engine because of weak metals was suffering from over heating & break downs but in the hands of a skill crew was a very formidable weapon could eliminated the best allies tanks easily as far as the video is concerned I can see clearly where it was shot but the most important thing here is the fact of these skilled men that are able to bring it back to life & fully loaded it I think it's exceptional work & all deserved credit .

To echo the comment in the video, I've also heard many consider the Panther the best tank of World War II...not because it was the most powerful, or best armored, or produced in great numbers....but because it was the best tank at addressing all three areas. The Tiger was clearly the most powerful, and the Sherman was produced in great numbers, but the Panther was powerful enough, armored enough and there was enough of them to make a real difference on the battlefield. A nod has to go to the Russian tanks, however, because if the Panther had an equal it was in the East.

This is the one I've been looking for this doc for a while. This man actually witnessed the battle and he still lives there. It touches me when he says they asked what should we do and the 'germans' just tell him and his family to run in that direction. Like they had exepted there fait but you run and get out of the way of this impending 'mess/battle' quite touching? (plus I enjoy the mechanical side. It's like you do not have to worry to much about things rusting threw the components are that 'thick and large?) The problem with working with things like this is the lifting and moving. In fact dangerous if one does not know what they are doing one could easily crush them selves. The lifting tools/ pullys ect ect are expensive to. Not to mention just stardard tools like sockets spanners pry bars and the other million and one tools one needs to get the job done.(there is something about sand blasting or a job that does a similar job I no it takes a little bit of surface material off but from a rusty filthy piece of metal to a nice clean new looking piece of steel well I think it is a well 'rewarding' feeling if that makes any seance taking something that looks well 'ruined' and fixing it up new.

Littlefield's family sold the panther to a museum in Massachussetts after his death - someone in Poland filed suit that he had bought it from an illegitimate owner and have it returned to Poland.
Probably better for Littlefield that he got to see it completed and not have to deal with following events.

If this is the same Panther, the upper frontal plate seems to be destroyed by enemy fire. Panthers' frontal plate is known for breaking apart or breaking off it's welds after being hit by a heavy shell, such as 122mm which was used as artillery piece and tank armamament (IS-2) by Soviet Union. You can also see that the broken plate folds inside the tank, meaning that internal explosion didn't break it. I highly doubt that the tank was scuttled, maybe the one on the photography.

Jagdpanther based on Panther chassis was considered best tank destroyer of the war. It had same gun as Kingtiger. Best allied tank destroyer of the war, SU-100 based on a T-34 chassis.

If properly made, the king tiger would have been the best tank of world war II. But, because the of lack of supplies and man power, the steel made to use the king tiger was of bad quality, making it penetrable by the 122 mm shells from the is2s and a lack of tungsten made it so that it could not use apcr shells as well. And while people may say that its too big and too heavy, that is also a myth. While, the engine may be incredibly under powered, their wide tracks made the weight distribution even better than the shermans and t-34s. The 88mm on the king tiger was also bigger and more accurate than both the guns on the tiger 1 and the panther.
