Beautiful congratulations on your calendar 👏👏👏 anyway possible to make those shelfs you had the jars earthquake safe like make sliding doors for them just reminding
Years ago I found a way to stop chickens from moulting. Chickens can't taste hot pepper. It does not bother them. Mixing a little cayanne pepper in with their feed, in the winter, they do not notice. It warms them up internally, and they don't molt at all, and they keep laying. I read about it in Mother Earth News, tried it, and it worked for me.... I loved your intro, the drone shots, and the still shots. It gives us a sense of what it is like to be there -- the beauty, the vastness, the inhospitable wildness. Your doing a calendar is a great idea. It looks fantastic. I am going to buy one. Thank you.
Interesting and surprising, given that birds don't have the inflammatory reaction to pepper as you say. If anything heats you up I would've imagined it was that reaction.
Why would you stop chickens from moulting? They need new feathers to have a proper plumage. Just provide them with nutritious feed, enough light and warmth and they'll drop the feathers quickly and grow new, strong ones.
@@finnprepp2828 If you think of your chickens as pets and keep them for say four years, then what you said is correct. My chickens layed eggs straight through for 18-20 months, then I replaced and ate them. It was a more efficient and productive use of feed. I had fresh eggs every day of the year. I was able to have all the eggs I wanted with fewer chickens, and less feed. I am not sure this would work in Alaska but it worked for me.
I was reminded of Alaska's last earthquake. Looking at your awesome shelves that he made for you, maybe you want to fashion some kind of fence like or something to keep your shelves from spilling over the edges. Just an idea.
I was so heartbroken when I saw your root cellar was inundated with ground water. I know alaska is prone to earthquakes and I hope you plan to put some ledges or something on the front of the "can-try" to prevent disaster. Thank you for your videos. pantry + can = can-try

I love the calendar idea. You guys should make a cookbook or a canning book. I would love to try to can what you guys do, but I can't find some of the recipes. Love what you guys are doing.
Ariel, I love that you’re getting more comfortable in front of the camera. You’re hilarious! Thank you guys for sharing this tour. I love watching these videos for new recipes for putting food up.
I'd like to suggest that you string heavy fishing line across the front of your beautifully laden pantry shelves as you are prone to earthquake tremors there. I learned the hard way in my own canning cellar here in Central California. Thankyou for your wonderful videos.
I heard in your area it's code for hot water and propane tanks to be fastened with steel straps to the house framing in case of earthquakes. I've experienced two small tremors in my 53 years in Canada and find it fascinating you have to take extra precautions just in case.
I over wintered carrots in the ground in Michigan. Heavy mulching and a garage sale bedspread to flip the snow off the bed when you need to pull a weeks worth to take indoors. Try to harvest them all before spring, as they aren’t good if they grow their tops again. This may work for you in your high tunnel. Heavy heavy mulching only in there. Love your channel. Appreciate the work it takes to share your adventures.
My mom told me that when she was a kid potatoes and other root vegetables were stored in outside storage clamps (covered with earth and sometimes straw. There were pretty heavy winters in central Poland back then (-30oC and below) now due to the climate change winters are unfortunatelly way more milder and I'm learning schedules for planting and generally gardening from UK based resources as the climate has dramatically changed.
Man, I nearly lost my thumb chopping wood like this in 2020 when it split earlier then expected. Maybe invest in a chain glove, save those precious fingers and spare me the anxiety 😉 Love the video and if I had use for the calendar, I would buy.
If you lay the pieces down flat instead of standing up on the chopping log it is a lot safer to split. Once you chop down if the piece doesn't split you can hold the end of the stick and the handle of the axe and spread it twisting the axe head causing the stick to split.
I can't understand how people get over whelmed by this. You two have the right way of thinking. I hear people say it's hard to get up everyday and have so much to do but that has to be so much better then waking up in the suburbs with nothing to do and slowly going insain with never having a choice in your life. Next summer you guys need to do what you did for your food challenge and just show us what you eat every meal while you have access to everything fresh! Love seeing what you make.

It's absolutely amazing what you guys have accomplished not only this year, but since moving to AK. Seeing what you do week in, week out is inspiring! Keep up the great work, and thank you for sharing it all with us.

You were building the root-cellar when YT offered me ur channel to watch. Since then I`ve been a fan of ur. videos.Warm greetings and virtual hugs and kisses to you and ur animals from Finland! Stay healthy !
You were busy! Living in the climates we do does not lend itself easily to fresh eating - sprouting and long keeping vegetables is the only way. But great satisfaction in having it on the shelf too! You do well for storage! Good for you guys! A lean to building(cool room) off the cabin would be handy. But I gotta say..2 cups of coffee a day...Wow...lol...I drink 2 - 3 pots a day...lol. Calendar on its way...11.00 shipping...lol..Yikes. Good job!
I am so sorry that for the last day, I have not been able to get any like/thumbs up to light up!! Thank you for taking us along on your adventures!! Blessings!!
The food always looks wonderful. I know it's really healthy. Don't ever take that for granted, where we live we basically have to try and mitigate how much poison we consume because of working for $$ leaves very little time for growing our own food. Food from grocery stores just keeps getting worse and worse as the years go by. Y'all are so blessed.
I'm not new to your channel, but I am new to commenting. Your pantry is gorgeous, and a lot of hard work that went into it. I love the way you two live off the land.
have you guys considered doing a tiny addition on the front of your house just a bit larger than your deck? If you insulated that but didnn't connect it to your house with venting and put a window in it that lined up with your current window you could still get decent light into your place and you would get a lot of storage that would end up much colder than your house but likely not below freezing due to the heat coming off the house. Depending on how your deck is made you might be able to just detach it and move it to the new front of your house so you don't lose that space either. It would probably function a lot like the root cellar for november through march but be too hot in the summer for that purpose.
I was thinking something similar. Perhaps they could build a pantry. They could regulate the temp fairly easily in the winter with a door. Your idea is cool too.
I would love to see a video about what you all do for Christmas. Do you do anything special? Cook any special meals? Do you ever leave Alaska or go on vacation?
Build a passive dehydrator!! Eric can build one from the scrap material you have and you have way more sunshine than needed in the summer to dehydrate many things you would like to dehydrate without it costing any battery/solar! Just lookup plans on your favorite search engine! Go for it, would be an awesome spring project which you can use all summer.
As much as I love all your videos, I always enjoy the misfires and 'miss takes' that you show at the end! It's definitely been interesting to see the different dishes you come up with to use the lovely food that you've gathered. Thanks as always for the share! :)
I LOVED the outtakes at the end, had quite the giggle this Saturday morning. I found your TH-cam channel quite by accident last week and fell head over heels. So now my 2021 plan is to binge watch starting with the very first episode and get caught up. I am excited do learn where your lives were before making this new journey. Thank you for allowing me to live this adventure through you. I am too old now to fathom this lifestyle. Love you guys.
I am so excited and watching whatever they do. I think having the “bloopers “ on the end of the video is super cute!! I love to see you guys how you really are 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
@@controlfoodcontrolthepeopl5627 Ja, what I meant was that they have plans to extend their cabin and that they're also thinking hard about what alternative forms of root cellar might work in their area 😉. That's what they've mentioned earlier🤷......
Love seeing all the canning and dry storage. I still do a little, but don’t have the ground space to grow a whole lot. When we were kids, we lived in the house my dad built, which had a shelter in the basement. My dad turned it into a cold storage area, and we all helped with canning stuff from the garden. Can’t beat fresh or canned foods!
I live in a neighborhood in SE Texas, but intend on adopting more of a homesteading lifestyle, and Lord willing, one day I will live on my own homestead, off grid. When I say "intend on adopting," it's because this is all brand new to me. I do make things like bone broth, but I never realized you could can it like that. Mine is in the freezer currently. I really want to learn more about canning, fermenting, pickling, sourdough, etc...
I love your content ❤ and the drone footage is breathtaking. I belong to a couple canning groups and the people who are new to canning that like to call us horders when they see our jars....really tick me off....they have no concept of how many jars it takes to preserve the harvest.
I laughed over this one too. It takes two cups to get us going. Then we switch to other drinks but usually head back to the coffee pot in the afternoon for more cuppa. ;-)
LOL Same here I immediately thought , WOW a whole 2 cups? I can easily do 4 cups. I usually make 8 and have been known to finish the whole pot on occasion.
Considering the Rose is part of the Apple family I imagine it has quite the possibilities to make sauces. Great size jars! I’m not into jelly much either, I get hungry for black raspberry once in a great while but that’s it. Oh awesome about the spruce tips, never heard of jelly being made that’s so cool.
Great video! I enjoy hearing about your gardens and then what you do to preserve all that goodness to eat later. The way you eat is so healthy and something many of us strive for.
After my used jars are washed, I turn them upside down and put them into the boxes. If you have any critters in your storage they don't die in the jars that way. I've also seen other people put the washed used lids on upside down and then put the ring on. Saves own ring storage.
I think its more to save money..she said they had roughly 400 jars..once the jar is sealed its not going to open so no need of the ring...and if the jars is not properly seal you’ll be able to tell by the middle of the lid. If the lid springs up when you release your finger, the lid is unsealed.
The looks on the faces of the dogs is priceless!! Your stash of food looks incredible. I’ll bet you two are the healthiest people on earth. Love to watch what you’re doing. It’s so fun! ♥️❣️♥️

Those dog beds look better than my bed! Lucky fellas!
I'm not new to your channel, but I am new to commenting. Your pantry is gorgeous, and a lot of hard work that went into it. I love the way you two live off the land.
I thought your "herb mixture" was something totally different when I first noticed it LOL
I was surprised to see a huge pot store in Tiny Talkeetna this year! I did not even know it was legal there!
Ideally of course a little fridge with a extra solar set up would be nice but what would be neat is find an old school ice box
have you guys considered doing a tiny addition on the front of your house just a bit larger than your deck?
I love the bloopers at the end. You two are just gems! Thank you!
i just almost started crying because i feel so much love for you two and all that you do!
i wish you all the best and lots of love!!
I just came to look for your tomato pie and pie crust recipe, and was delighted to find the new episode! Congrats on the calendar!
Which episodes were those on? I keep meaning to find her sourdough recipe, too.
RatTaxi not sure if this is the one you you were looking for:

I love that your videos are so full of life and both of you are so enthusiast. You two are truly a great team. Congratulation for all your hard work!
A relaxing content after a long stressful day at work.
Build a passive dehydrator!! Eric can build one from the scrap material you have and you have way more sunshine than needed in the summer to dehydrate many things you would like to dehydrate without it costing any battery/solar! Just lookup plans on your favorite search engine! Go for it, would be an awesome spring project which you can use all summer.
metamud 👍 great idea!
What a lovely way to end my day. Greetings and blessings from France.
Yes it is, and hello from North Carolina! 😊
As much as I love all your videos, I always enjoy the misfires and 'miss takes' that you show at the end! It's definitely been interesting to see the different dishes you come up with to use the lovely food that you've gathered. Thanks as always for the share! :)
I like the bloopers you sometimes leave at the end of videos :D
I LOVED the outtakes at the end, had quite the giggle this Saturday morning. I found your TH-cam channel quite by accident last week and fell head over heels. So now my 2021 plan is to binge watch starting with the very first episode and get caught up. I am excited do learn where your lives were before making this new journey. Thank you for allowing me to live this adventure through you. I am too old now to fathom this lifestyle. Love you guys.
Do you think you'll ever extend the cabin? Do you have plans to build a new root cellar?
I think they talked about plans to do both in former videos 😉.....
Always love your vids and any content you post. Admittedly the highlight of this vid was seeing your puddycat share Bo’s bed😁😄
I'm cold just watching. Another awesome job of canning . The dogs look so comfortable on their beds by the fire. Spoiled pups . Love it
Your intros would be perfect all by themselves. But, love the knowledge afterward.
You guys do a really great job at showing us just how breathtaking the Alaskan wilderness is.
"we really like to drink coffee maybe 2 cups a day" ...... if by Day you mean "by 8AM" then yes 2 cups a day sounds about right ;)
I laughed over this one too. It takes two cups to get us going. Then we switch to other drinks but usually head back to the coffee pot in the afternoon for more cuppa. ;-)
Exactly!!!!! I was thinkin im just gettin started by the second cup!!!! 😸😸😸😸💞💞💞💞
I thought that was funny too 😂. 2 cups 🤣
LOL Same here I immediately thought , WOW a whole 2 cups? I can easily do 4 cups. I usually make 8 and have been known to finish the whole pot on occasion.
Right I drink couple pots by my self
Considering the Rose is part of the Apple family I imagine it has quite the possibilities to make sauces. Great size jars! I’m not into jelly much either, I get hungry for black raspberry once in a great while but that’s it. Oh awesome about the spruce tips, never heard of jelly being made that’s so cool.
I totally thought you were gonna say y’all were expecting!! 😂🤣😂
Excited about a calendar too, though! LoL
I thought so as well!
Another fabulous video, thank you for the tour and all the explanations! Also love seeing the dogs and your gorgeous kitty.
WHAT NO PICKLES, ur fired😀 I'm gone, just kidding good job ya'll food preserves or storage looks good
Great video! I enjoy hearing about your gardens and then what you do to preserve all that goodness to eat later. The way you eat is so healthy and something many of us strive for.
Loving this tour! Hope you try another ‘Eating only what we have for a month challenge.’ It was such great inspiration.
I would love to see another challenge too. That was really fun see what you would come up with for your meals. Love watching you both. 👍😊
Love ❤️ to see you’re tour of your home grown foods especially how you cook 👩🍳 love 💕 that keep making those beautiful 😻 video’s
Sometimes we have to dump some items that we know we're just not gonna eat. Not everything is can-able.
Or eat the horrible stuff first
After my used jars are washed, I turn them upside down and put them into the boxes. If you have any critters in your storage they don't die in the jars that way. I've also seen other people put the washed used lids on upside down and then put the ring on. Saves own ring storage.
why do the canned jars not have the rings? Genuinely curious as I'm learning to can. Thanks!
It's so that you can see if the seal has broken or not, otherwise if you had it on you wouldn't be able to see with the ring on it
I think its more to save money..she said they had roughly 400 jars..once the jar is sealed its not going to open so no need of the ring...and if the jars is not properly seal you’ll be able to tell by the middle of the lid. If the lid springs up when you release your finger, the lid is unsealed.

The looks on the faces of the dogs is priceless!! Your stash of food looks incredible. I’ll bet you two are the healthiest people on earth. Love to watch what you’re doing. It’s so fun! ♥️❣️♥️
