  • After exploring the massive ice caves at Byron Glacier located near Portage, Alaska we head home and prepare our equipment for the first snowstorm of the winter season. Removing snow and stacking wood complete a day's worth of work at the cabin.

If you have any real amount of snow, the snowblower is the way to go. It's what we used in Maine when we'd get 2 and 3 feet at a pop. We'd run out of room for snowbanks on our long driveway, that was never a problem with the snowblower. Many parts of Alaska just don't get that much snow, 6 of the last 7 years we just drove over it and packed it down, didn't plow/snowblow once. Funny side note, I was teaching in a Yupik Eskimo village, my roommate had family in Buffalo New York. He showed his students pictures of all the snow they got and they were absolutely astounded. Alaska is lots cold but not many places get all that much snow. Enjoyed the glacier footage and also really like the woodshed.

You have such fun toys -- six wheel Polaris, two snow mobiles, a snow thrower. Admit it. They are not tools, they are toys. You enjoy scraping the snow off of things. You love hitting the snow off fence lines. Admit it. Bo and Bandit are such wonderful pets and good companions. You also enjoy being with each other. It is so silent right after a snow storm ----- when the snow is still in the trees. I love walking through two foot deep snow. I know, I am like a 76 year old kid. It is so fun when it first snows. I love it when it is really cold outside, like at night, and tshirt weather by the wood stove. One time I was standing by my wood stove in my long underwear, in the cabin, surrounded by new snow. I heard scratching on the closed door into the kitchen. It was spooky. The only thing I could imagine was Big Foot. My heart started pounding. Something was in the kitchen. Something was making scratching noises. I grabbed a ski poll, holding it with the point down. I jumped up on a big chair and swung the door open ... only to find a very tiny little mouse scratching at the door. It was so cute I had to laugh. The eiry silence of new fallen snow does strange things to the imagination. Have I ever told you the ghost story of Kibal Charly..............

So he tries to pace himself without scaring them so they don't leave him at home. As long as he can pace himself, he should be OK. When he stops doing that, he may have to stay at home when they go on adventures.

Just a thought. If you have to stack wood outside the wood shed, make some heavy duty pallets from your trees, stack sections of wood on the pallets, then use the tractor to move a pallet at a time into the wood shed. It could be left that way, or you can restack it from there, saving you both a lot of strain in moving the wood. Hope it helps.

Those moose hanging around while you were taking care of the snow were just waiting for you to clear out so they can back to your garden haha. I would put the fence back up if it was me. Nice snow toys you have.

I’m with Bo! Thirty years ago I went exploring in a cave on the island of Eleuthera and swore I would NEVER EVER go into another cave.

When you said a cave I thought it was a rock cave not Ice cave! I definitely would have done a Bo too!!! I think he thought if we all go in and the cave collapse on us who will go for help? Very clever dog full of years and wisdom.

Just finished walking my dog in my shorts and a t-shirt. Not to rub it in or anything :) Sonoran Desert is wonderful winter weather.
Several decades ago I lived in Kenai. A lot like you guys are living now. I was a much younger man. Watching your videos brings back a lot of memories.
You guys have a safe and happy winter season :)

Thanks for the video. All that fluffy snow make me a little jealous. We have a few more weeks to wait in Utah until we get enough snow to go snowshoeing.

One of the things I enjoy about your videos is the beginning when you list the temperature and sunrise and sunset. I find that so interesting. My family and I live in Pinellas County, Florida. We just went through a pretty nasty tropical storm this week. I love the difference between where we all live. You guys are exploring a glacier and our high temps today are 85F with lows of 71 F. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us

I lived in St Pete for 13 years (from '82 to '95). Haven't been back since but miss everything that area has to offer. The only thing I don't miss is making the trip between St Pete and Tampa (where I worked) on the "Howard Frankenstein" bridge. When they opened the new bridge it wasn't quite as bad though. Take care and enjoy Pinellas County for me.

You are not the only 1 having trouble with snow blowers this year..lol
It amazes me how people lived in this type of area's 100+ years ago..1000 years ago.. no machines to help them.
