When you see someone thats pessimistic engage with him your optimism to sweeten him up to optimize levels of optimistic happiness without being emotionally effected by a fellow pessimism. I’m a firm believer when תשובה is implemented according to the approach of the בעל התניא then the saying of דוד המלך will come to fruition הפכת מספדי למחול לי פתחת שקי ותאזרני שמחה.

Can't you change an emotion by reflecting on its source and changing one's thinking?

There can be situations where an individual is giving optimistic advice however the party receiving the optimistic instruction is extrapolating to it to mean as pessimistic because the party receiving the optimistic advice is in reality pessimistic masked with optimism. So much so they will sell their Jewish brother to the Egyptians in order to sound optimistic?
