As a bassoonist who sat behind the flute section, tuning the piccolo was hell on the ears.
I'm sure, I sit next to the flutes (we don't have piccolos) and just the flutes hurt my ears

Yea I play flute and piccolo tuning takes me forever on the piccolo so I usually give up haha I don’t play it in class tho so no ones ears die

My brother plays like 6 different instruments, piccolo included and this is very accurate to what I hear most nights.
Tbh, as a Euphonium player a good amount of our music has flute solo parts, but the the thing is, the clarinets or the saxophones end up drowning them out. But as being in the low brass, I’m used to being the people that play a lot of long notes to hold the beat and rarely do I get a low brass solo.😂😂

Add clarinet to that, it's hell cus if you place ur fingers or blow in it slightly wrong, it makes a totally different note

you will find Latin/Afro Cuban music has lots of flute with a bias towards piccolo, maybe because piccolo can sound over all the percussion instruments where the flute likely has to be mic'd?

I play french horn and it is pretty much the same way for us horn players! People tend to think ✨ Star Wars ✨ when they think of french horn but in reality we spend a lot of practice time just tuning since we are always so damn out of tune!! I can see the saxophones cringe during rehearsal almost every day bc we are so sharp. But that is the life of a horn player I guess.😅
As a beginner flutist I can play a quarter of our two Christmas songs and the concert is on December 13!!!

Can't help thinking of American Pie when I see the title of this.
I felt this. The piccolo is SO hard to tune, especially when the flutes are all in tune but then there's the one kid playing the piccolo that is horribly out of tune (I am that one kid).
Or constantly trying to play softer in the higher register. Or trying not to spit when getting out the high b natural. Or not getting out the high b natural and cursing yourself out of not practicing picc more.

why was I waiting for the uh like krusty krab / SpongeBob music to be played?
Those type of instruments fell into the “weird” band kid category, but no where near as much as the Bassoon players, The bass clarinet players, bass saxophone, bass flute, hyper bass flute, octo bass fiddle, etc… oddly enough alot of out of the way over extra bass instruments. They were kind of ostracized from the rest of the students because their instruments weren’t practical for the type of music we were playing, but because they played an instrument, our district had to include them, which made for terrible logistics & awkward performances because we didn’t have a need for most bass instruments, anyone who played a piccolo was transitioned to the flute.
