  • Hey folks, I was very happy to be able to take the new S1000R for a ride a few days ago!
    The main reason I was interested in riding this bike was so I could compare it to the 2019 model I owned for almost 18 months. I'm not comparing this bike to any other bike is the Super/Hyper Naked category, just the previous model. The opinions presented are my own! You may disagree with some of my comments or think that things that were a concern for me, aren't important to you.
    Now even if the new S1KR is better in every area than the old model, it's not the type of bike I want anymore (unless I could afford a track day bike). However, I had my fingers crossed for people who are worried that this model may be a "let down" or "missed opportunity" from BMW.
    I forgot to answer the question I had about the throttle in the video... this bike had no free play in the throttle at all, however the fuelling felt good at small throttle openings so well done BMW!
    This is the first video I can add adverts to, now that I have over 1000 awesome subscribers... I've got four "mid roll" ads in there. I know ads are not welcome but if you think that, compared to similar length videos I I've got one or two too may ads, please let me know. Cheers!

    I picked up my S1000R SPORT Racing Red on Friday last week and I have found it to be amazing - extremely well balanced steering, light but controlled confidence inspiring turning into bends, roundabouts, throttle is very very smooth and the suspension very compliant soft when the it has to be and firm when required. The self cancelling indicators are a welcomed addition along with the hill hold assist and I am appreciating for the first time the quick shifter/blipper. It was very easy to connect the SENA units my two helmets. I am as you can tell very very pleased

    That is one really luverly bike loads of money of course but never the less really nice .Personally I only ride old stuff these days but it seems to from what I have seen on this forum the virtually all the fours and triples seem to be really high revving engines so making the rider having to rev the pants of it to get peak power and be up and down the box all the time almost two strokesk if you will ,maybe I am completely wrong about this but that´s what I am taking from my views of tests . Great review though Rikky enjoyed as always cheers : )

      Yes Malcolm, what you say about the latest sporty bikes (even the naked ones) is pretty much spot on... this is one of the reasons why I'm on the R1250R now - the power on that bike makes much more sense on the road even if the handling is not as sharp... it's just more fun! Glad you enjoyed the vid 😊

      The combination of the electronics and dash alongside the (in my opinion) much better-behaved chassis does make it very good upgrade... even if it hasn't got a big power increase, it's more of a precise weapon than before. I think a test ride would only seal the deal!
      I should have tried black and a few other colours in the video too... opportunity missed! 🤦‍♂️

    Hi.. nice perspective..
    Im looking at 2020 model s1000r.. ive gone f3 800 to ft1200 ( so torquey .. lovely) but miss the mid corner handling still fun blasting out of corners but have to be 100% on your game as it will bite when hustling it. So considering bmw s1000r ... tested one and found relaxed usualable torque 4 to 7k which felt flowing and safe and fast but not blow your mind stuff at 9000rpm yes stuff got pretty rapid on tight twist roads and not something im likely to be playing at in real world riding for me. Humm! I was impressed but felt it was an instrument that was very very good and capable of do all you ask of it... but i wasnt wow thing a deal right now. I week later still replecting on it hence finding your review. Cheers rich.

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Rich! I've just released a test ride vid on an F800 and I have to say that I was very impressed after my short ride! I could see myself owning one (if I had the disposable cash, which I don't!). The S1000R is a just a great all round, powerful and great handling bike. There are no real flaws in it but I guess perhaps the lack of rough edges works against it for some folk. I guess you have considered an Aprilia Tuono 1100 Factory too?

    • @richbrett7268
      @richbrett7268 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RikkyTang Cheers .. Im lucky enough to own a husqvarna nuda which shares old f800 DNA.. It's what started me on my bmw journey. Ive enjoyed a r9t scrambler which given my riding style i shouldnt like it as much as i do... Im only 8-10 secs slower on it than my average around our local track, considering it was a cold day and i had bridgestone ax41s on it ( very good but not a track tyre) i was amazed at 1.59mins laps and it was great fun. I can see why people would like the shift cam boxer engine. My aircooled boxer is a lovely thing. The indian Ftr1200 gave me more moments than ever before on any another bike , all from the rear end wanting to step out but i guess that is the design brief... Im just not good enough or willing to ride like that. I did a bit on the last day before i changed the tyres ( trying to wear them out as just wanted them off the bike before best before date) and i finally understood it. Which brings me to the tuono 1100 my mate rides one and its a great bike but will not folliw suit... Following him on the ftr1200 i just can't keep the same mid corner speed where usually i can on other bikes. Sorry for the story.. I'll look out for the f800 review. Ps my best lap time of 1.44 was on the nuda. But that was trying hard and had a year of many track days. The top guys on superbikes are 1.30 ish.

      @@richbrett7268 Thanks again for your thoughts and comments, stories are fine by me! 😁
      I liked the idea of the Nuda but the angular shape of the fuel tank always put my off for some reason! I do hope to get a ride on the F900R at some point though (although BMW UK weren't interested in lending me one for a longer term test sadly).
      I haven't sampled an Indian yet and I'm also not really one for purposely spinning up the rear... having said that I can do it on the R1250R because the TC lets you to a small degree! I have ridden an R9T Scrambler recently and video will be coming soon - it's really good to ride and looks awesome - I can see me owning one at some point! But the 1250 Shiftcam engine has s good bit more power and torque (but more weight and maybe less character...). But torque is king for me at this point! I've managed a 1:57 on it around Donington with a a bit more to come from the bike but I need some track tuition!

    Excellent review - all the important points to a road rider. I'm not sure why but more and more I'm inclined to swap my '18 for this one.
    Question: the second gen front suspension tended to dive easily when applying brakes at speed. Is this improved or does the electronics allow for stiffening of the front end (beyond what was possible with preload on previous model)?

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Windy! Now to your question... it's a tricky one because I actually didn't feel that the front dived excessively on my 2019 model (which would be the same as your 2018). I guess it's all down to personal experience I guess. So I didn't particularly look out for front end dive but didn't notice anything that stood out. There's only one thing for it, you'll have to get a test ride 😁

    You mentioned it had some grab when you let the clutch out. Are you describing the start assist that Suzuki bikes have? It makes traffic driving a little more bearable.

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I know of the Suzuki start assist, it raises the revs slightly as you pull away but doesn't actually effect how the clutch engages. On the S1000R, it just felt like a grabby clutch. Only happened on one or two occasions but when it happened it didn't feel too nice.

    Great review Rikky 👍🏻. Do you think it can be a good substitute for the bigger touring bikes like GS for weekend highway cruising, by putting a windscreen and comfort seats? My only issue with the GS is that it looks comically huge for inner city riding. The problem with the XR is value retention. As for the R1250RS, I don’t know who the bike is made for, as the classic RT serves the same roadster purpose while looking great doing it.

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well working backwards through your comments 😁 The RS and RT do have some overlap to be sure and if I wanted to do a 1000 mile road trip I'd pick the RT for definite! The RS has mild clip-ons a lower screen and is more suited to weekend blasts IMO.
      While the GS is a big bike, it's also a bloody impressive one, based on my short time on the 1250GS last year. It would handle town work with aplomb (apart from squeezing through the tightest gaps!) and taller seat height allows great visibility in traffic too so don't let the size put you off!
      I think the S1000R could work as a sporty long distance bike, but for me I'd know I'd get frustrated trying to find the right aftermarket screen to fit. I predict plenty of £'s spent and a lot of frustration unless you get lucky early on.

I am now leaning towards the GS after reading what you had to say. Infact maybe I would got for the whole fat hog GSA which is clearly an overkill 😀 though a keepsake, or maybe the desert X from Ducati, unless the Triumph 1200 makes a compelling case given the features and value as many reviewers are hinting at.
      Being a new bike the 1200GT pro will have a lot of unknown variables unlike the tried and well loved GS. Press launches and magazine reviews are sugarcoated. Your reviews in comparison are authentic and from the heart. Great work Rikky 👍🏻.

I haven't got any lines on new Triumph bikes yet I'm afraid as I'm still very much small fry in the YT world but I will see what can be done. The GSA... well that is a serious proposition! Tall seat height apparently, I hope you have the legs for it! I love the look of the Desert X myself but I have this thing for large amounts of torque (as I suspect you do if you own a xDiavel) and I'm not sure if the Desert X can tick that box. Having said that it may well charm me anyway! And yes the 1200 Triumph is a bit of an unknown quantity right now... it's a lot of money to spend to be an early adopter!
      I'm in no particular rush to sell my R1250R because I really love riding it, but I am very interested in the next generation of GS/1300 boxer so perhaps it might be worth hanging on until some more details creep about that?

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looking at the BMW Configurator it's a bit confusing... when you add Headlight Pro you also get the Daytime Riding Light and Adaptive Headlight options so it's difficult to tell which bit is which. But I think if you choose no extra options for the headlight you will not have the LED strip in the middle.

      Yeah I prefer the look of the old model also... but in my opinion this is a better bike to ride than the Gen 2 model; it has better technology too

    Hey Rikky, how does the GSX-S1000 - 2022 stand up to the S1000? Thanks.

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Suzuki stands up very well to the BMW in my opinion... on the road there are pretty close when it comes to power. Maybe the BMW edges it on handling with its S1000RR derived chassis. I prefer the extra electronic "toys" of the BMW too. If the Suzuki had the new instruments and connectivity of the GSX-S 1000GT it would be hard for me to choose between them but right now the BMW would be my pick.
