Modern Christian art lacks HUMAN complexity. Most Biblical stories detail the full human spectrum, from incredibly righteous acts, to the darkest of depravity. Christian films on the other hand are too cowardly to go near the darkness, which results in a lack of contrast, and an unrelatable depiction of man.
Outside of the realm of sexual temptation, I legitimately believe that adult Christians can be mature enough to touch on other realities of our fallen world. I believe a great example of this is the passion of the Christ. Our salvation was literally drenched in blood, so pretending that all Christian media has to be viewable at a Sunday school with 10-year-olds just isn’t spiritually mature. I believe that all we really need to do is be mindful of potential temptation when creating media, and the greatest temptation really is the sexual kind.
Passion of Christ and even the Bible had some histories that happened that if they were made into a film, they wouldn't be kid-friendly at all. In the Bible, the histories are important because they record how people can have such a fallen nature to feel the rage to destroy the image of God. It certainly isn't an ideal thing Christians may want, but I still think that knowing how our fallen and sinful nature hurts is still necessary. So you are right that a mature Christians audience is more mindful of this darkness in the world. I just think we should see it only in moderation. One thing to be careful about as Christians is that we shouldn't overexpose ourselves to evil (excluding things that are absolutely unavoidable). Otherwise our minds will become dirty by it.
He has said how i have been saying my whole adultlife and it usually rubs christian brothers and sisters the wrong way, like they are appalled by an honest take at times, those are the christians I pray for the most, the ones who have lost all joy and sense of reality.
I agree ! Christian art is sometimes really bad in terms of quality. However, there are some good things. As for movies, those done by "Mount Zion ministries" are really well done, with series like "Abattoir"... and it is the same with books, translations...
We can be a Christian who is an artist. Christian is not my identifying adjective. What other profession has to wear that adjective? Christian postal worker, Christian heart surgeon, Christian carpenter? I can work my God given vocation and with excellence and have it take nothing away but rather add to my devotion to Christ and others by seeing the keenly and communicating that with depth of insight. We need the darkness to understand what LIGHT is not. Art is the only vocation a Christian’s want to attach an adjective to.
Hey guys. I'd love to hear your thoughts on The Chosen. I personally don't like how Christ is portrayed.. and contrary to some opinion on here, I don't think the acting is very good. What really bothers me most though, is the high praise given from the Mormon community. That would make me feel I missed the mark as a Christian producer. God's word should always cause division among true believers and those who follow other gods.. My two cents. A discussion on that series would be pretty cool.
Good videos agree very much so except i on the issue of the christian movies ive seen a number of extremly well done christian movies the passion, Gods not dead 1-4, we believe, courages, grace card, ect but i do understand and agree with what your saying part with the movies as well
but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you. 1 Peter 1:25 ESV knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:20-21 ESV If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Matthew 18:17 ESV
I only enjoyed the Chosen but I don't find most Christian movies having good cinematography or sound effects or sometimes the actors aren't good at their jobs sorry but I just think so
Like most movies made based on biblical narratives, they’re inherently lacking, especially when the filmmakers don’t believe it’s true. I find more mistakes every time I’ve watched it, but I think RISEN is well done.
if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. 1 Timothy 3:15 ESV So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 ESV Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. 2 Thessalonians 3:6 ESV
The Kendrick brothers have made some great movies. Perhaps if you didn’t watch so much of what comes out of Hollywood you would have an appreciation for things with more meaning As oppose to movies that has underlining purpose to move people away from God.
The best Christian art, especially with fiction, doesn’t outright make God a part of the story, but presupposes Providence and includes a number of Christian themes. We see this in Narnia. Nowhere in Narnia to my knowledge does Aslan directly say “I’m God btw”. He says “in your world I am known by a different name.” There’s a ton of parallels and it’s kinda obvious but still it avoids being too campy or evanjelly by being less blatant. I think part of it comes down to the genre of reality Christianity is in. It’s theology. Philosophy. These aren’t good topics you insert as the plot of a movie or book but rather the message. You don’t see Das Kaptial being made into a movie. Nor do you see Plato’s Republic. Nor do you see any other philosophy or religion being THE plot like with so many PureFlix movies. You see them, in good movies and books as the message or a theme that is either championed or explored.
Umm... the passion ?! Anything with jim caveziel I've liked. But I get your point, alot of christian movies are more closer to a hallmark midday movie than a blockbuster, but don't kid yourself, as soon as you mention Jesus it will get pushback from "the world" of critics and movie producers. I think people are desparate for a great christian movie where Jesus and faith questions are centre pieces but it just can't get the financial backing or talent that remains true to the scriptures. It will always get " corrupted" to try and appeal to the widest range of audiences, plus China owns Hollywood now so good luck.
I really appreciate you guys's content and honesty, but I'm really saddened by this bashing of Christian artists. It was totally uncalled for and it was absolutely not necessary for you to prove your point of non-believers being great talents and artists. God bless the many who tried their best with the little they were given to spread the message of the Gospel. You have no idea how many have been blessed, moved and even brought to Christ thru these movies. Most of the world is not obsessed with perfectionism and can appreciate a message that is presented in a "less than Hollywood" quality. Don't say you like it or that it is great, but please, don't bash it either. Why speak such words against your family???
You would think people taking on the job of critiquing Christian art, & the top notch quality it should have, would care to use their own effort of critique at a higher level, going beyond a couple main criticisms, like providing in depth, valuable insight to really help change any flaws they perceive. Just a few random jabs; what does that help anything? If you're going to take on the issue of desiring high quality, than truly take it on, & do so with your own high quality effort. I found it of no help; not a high quality voice for improvement. Nothing gained. Love wins.
I know this is late but bashing the art is not the same as bashing the artist, he didn't attack anyone's character or personal life. For example if I hire someone to fix my roof who happens to be Christian and he does a horrible job, I'll forgive him for it but I'm not gonna hire him again, would that be bashing a brother?
@@elissabellajoy regardless he didn't attack anyone personally he's allowed to have an opinion especially about movies, you didn't have to make it personal.
I'm confused how these guys have studied scripture so long with the covenants, Eucharist and liturgical things in line Hebrew and haven't been led to Rome yet. Fenced in by doctrine.
@Garbodad according to whom? It does align with early history. Go back and read the source and not bits and pieces given by Reformers like White or Durbin.
@Garbodad a never ending Reformation that divides and splits the Church. All denominations believe they have it right but what Church dare claim authority?
@Garbodad yes of course and Rome acknowledges that God is our authority. God not simply scripture. God didn't just give us word with no direction on how. It's been since 33 AD not the 1500s.
Let's hope that the one commenter so far advocating "The Chosen" is the only one. Yes, good production value but it sucks. A Reformed Christian should cringe at the crappy way they present Christ in "The Chosen."
Please stop ragging on Christian themed movies. You don’t know what the Holy Spirit is doing through simple messages in a simple film. When I was 16 I read a really cheesy poorly written book. By the last page I was weeping and poured my heart out to God and He gave me a new heart. I found a solid church and never looked back. I’m 63 years old now and am so thankful for that unbelieving person who said, “You like to read, right? Here’s a book I found.” Your critical spirit concerning “quality” of Christian films denigrates the work those film makers put into their craft. How many seeds have been planted by those movies? You or I will never know the answer to that. Good enough for you doesn’t mean it’s not good enough.

Not a fan of "The Chosen." The characters speak as if they were in 2022 A.D. instead of 30 A.D.
The Song is a good Christian movie... That's it. Have you read Francis Schaefer's essay on the topic?
Fire proof? Facing the Giants? Courageous? Passion of the Christ?
We soooo need to see Jeff speak to Jordan Peterson! That would be one epic convo!

But Hollywood is subsidized by tax payer dollars, so not really a level playing field. Even still, “The Chosen” is an amazing Christian tv series.
If the 2nd coming of Jesus already happened, how has it been 2000 years? How does the millennium play into all of this?
