Jerry, I'm a standard metal head. Piercings, tattoos, bald head etc. I bought one of your books, 50 easy classical guitar solos, as an exercise to improve my finger picking. I've always liked artists like Bocelli, and I love symphonic metal - nightwish and within temptation, but you've opened my eyes to classical guitar. I bought myself an aria classical guitar and I'm loving listening to classical and playing it. Thank you so much!!
I just found this video in my recommendations after buying the book today at my local shop (proving google knows EVERYTHING). I am looking forward to getting my fingers around these.
Thank you so much Peter that book was a long time in the making and most of the pieces in that book I have recorded and performed extensively I'm delighted that you like my work
I received this book yesterday from Amazon and I love it. The word "easy" is a relative word and some of the pieces in this book will require quite a bit of working on. The music is beautifully presented and I find the pieces to be delightful and tuneful.
Hi Michajeru Thanks so much for purchasing this book. I'm delighted you like it! Yes, "Easy" is a relative term. It would be more specific to say "Beginner to Intermediate", but that would make a ponderous an unwieldy title. I can suggest a few tunes that you will find at a beginner level: Bonny Sweet Boy, Mr Dowland's Midnight, Nonesuch, Orlando Sleepeth, Packinton's Pound, Peg-A-Ramsey, Scarborough Fair. Spagnoletta, Tanz, Toy (from Pickering), Volte, What If A Day, Woodycock. There are more but this will get you started. You can leave out the ornaments (the little notes) and that will also help to simplify the music. You can always put them back in after you have mastered the piece. All the best to you and happy plucking.
Well tabulated Jerry, purchased this yesterday & am enjoying working through it, nice arrangements & not too hard for the intermediate player. Must say that I'm enjoying extending myself adding in the trills and ornaments that are now stretching my existing skills. Holds value for all mid skill, intermediate point classical guitar players.
jerry you are a wizard. I love everything you have done. You have an amazing way of making these songs sound so good and easy to learn. Keep making guitar books.
I got the book+cd two months ago. It was more than I expected. The cd is great only to listen to. Many beautiful songs, some killer tunes you'll get immediately familiar with. From fast catchy tunes to more relaxes/romantic songs. I had a look around youtube and I have to say that the songs are like the originals. Of course professional performers add ornamentation and their style but the base is the same. There are two examples about how to add ornamentation that you can apply on the other songs. Some songs are played with a capo (but sounds nice even without) to recreate the lute sound. Some of the songs songs are easy to play but it is not that easy to get the right feeling (listen to the cd is very helpful). Sorry for my English (I'm Italian). Have a good time, cheers. Alex
I just ordered this book and can't wait to get it!! I also have your Bach lute suits book and find it to be very good and true to the pieces. I find it much better than the Frank koonce edition. And when I go to guitar festivals your edition is always the one they refer back too. So I have high hopes for this book and your other one for baroque. Best Wishes, Rob
Hi Deesade I'm so happy you like this and the Baroque book - right now i am finishing a guitar easy volume of 50 easy pieces - I'll have a you tube video up for that too - there was some talk of doing a romantic and classical book so stay tuned - I'm sure your comment will help - all the best - Jerry
Thank you Alex I'm delighted you like it - I'm in the process of doing a new book for the Music Sales Corp. UK of all Irish music so stay tuned and happy plucking :)
Hi, it is the same as me. I was playin electric guitar (metal) and out of a sudden i discovered the beauty of renaissance and baroque music. Jerry Willard published this great book "50 easy classical guitar pieces", which is very good for a beginner. Thank You Jerry, please transcribe some more great music for all of us "tabulator-guitarists". Mabe some german and french lute music? Regards
I'm sorry this selection didn't include Luis Milan's stately, majestic, Pavane no.2. You play it so beautifully, Mr. Willard. I have the book, plus the Baroque book too. Thank you.
Thank you Luft for your kind words. That particular Pavan in one of my favorite pieces. The reason why we didn't do it in this book was we wanted to make room for newer material. I have done that Pavan in many other editions so we felt it would be redundant to do it here. I agree with you - that's a really beautiful piece!
Hi Gregivy and Kayra - the book does include tab - almost all of the lute music of the Renaissance for lute was in some form of tablature - do a google for lute tablature and check the images - it's a more ancient style but basically it is the same as modern tab - just a schematic to show you where to put your fingers
Hi Pencocaste - Thanks so Much!!! for some strange reason i can't post a URL in this box if you look at it again you will see my web page - go there and there is a link to buy it thanks again - Jerry
I saw a comment on Amazon about many of these arrangements being in alternate tunings. How much of the content is in standard or dropped D? Your playing is wonderful!
Hi Blackbooks - Thanks so much for your kind words about my playing. I appreciate it. There are 61 tunes in this book 12 of them use a dropped D tuning. Other than those tunes the rest are in standard guitar tuning. I decided not to use the 3rd at F# which would make a standard Renaissance lute tuning because i felt it wasn't necessary as the tunes worked very well in standard guitar tuning and would unduly complicate the book. I do use and suggest the use of a capo on the 2nd fret to get closer to the original lute keys thus giving the tunes a greater vibrancy and life in my opinion. Jerry
Are they really as easy, as can be expected? I am looking for a full version of Chaconne in D Minor. In regards to neoclassical music, a band called Blind Guardian did a song called "The Bard". I said all of that to say, were there pieces like that in this book?
Hi, Brandon its hard to answer your question as "easy" is a subjective term and depends on the eye of the beholder :) if you listen to the video it should give you a good idea of the level. We tried to do this book with the advanced beginner and intermediate player in mind.
beautiful music , sounds like a great book , congratulations , my only issue is if there s tab going with the notation , i know tab is necessary to make a guitar book commercially viable but its annoying for me to look at and takes up so much space and is the chief reason us guitarists (me included ) are such bad sight readers compared to pianists etc . Lute music used tab i know , how did they know the rhythm ?? Anyway your book does sound wonderful , i love renaissance music
+Alan McCarthy - Hi Alan and thanks so much for your kind words i'm delighted you like my work! I feel the same way about tablature for modern guitar but its reality like or not if your going to be published - on the plus side however these tunes are rather short and so the tab doesn't create too many page turns or crowded pages - i play many ancient instruments so tablature systems are a must for me to know -many of tunes in this book were arranged from 4 part harmony and some taken directly from the tab. The rhythms are notated above the staff much like modern music - All the best to you - Jerry
+Francesco Renzitti One reason is they don't have to deal with rhythm on the tablature and perhaps people that use tablature will learn to read music a little more because they can see the music above while they read the tab. I agree with you the best is just to learn to read music. Thanks for your question

hi thx. .again... I had your book of Bach transcriptions in tab before some 1 borrowed it. ... is it right they are written mostly in a different key than standard transcriptions as general jerry ????
Correct! The keys are changed from the original key to lay better on the guitar. Not all the time but generally this is the case. Thank you for your interest. Jerry
What do you meditate to,? A bit of magic mushrooms opiumand cannabis, this. A comfortable chair and a ring of salt for protection. Very relaxing, good visuals.

Is there a tablature version of it? I can't read sheet music xD
Hi MetalDrums - This is both sheet music and tablature. The Tablature is directly under the sheet music. thanks - Jerry
Awesome! Thanks for replying so quickly :)
