Of the 5 books published by Adrian Le Roy and the more than a half dozen composers cited, I think the best was Brayssing. These pieces are absolutely beautiful and beautifully performed. Just to add a little more information about Brayssing: He was born in Germany, but moved to France in 1547 after the victory of Charles V over the Elector of Saxony at Mühlberg. A notarial act of 1553 in Paris mentions him as a master lute player living in the Rue Mâcon. This was one of the streets where prostitution was practiced and flourished legally by order of Louis IX from the 13th century until 1850 as boulevard Sébastopol took its place during the transformation of Paris under the Second Empire. The Le Roy and Ballard shop was only a 15-minute walk away from the Rue Mâcon I would suggest Le Roy and Ballard, looking for music to be published by their firm, most likely engaged his services for that purpose. It is not known if Brayssing had a family of his own, however, he was godfather to the daughters of both the composer Étienne Du Tertre and the composer Loys Bourgeois.
Thank you so much for that gem! I don't know whether it's this individual instrument or the renaissance guitar in general, but to me it sometimes sounds like a ukulele.
So grateful I now know this exists. Brilliant Classics is so invaluable
