So the simple fix to make it more accurate is follow the instructions in the owner's manual.

From your knowledge, if you mount the heading puck farther from the trolling motor, does it make the motor more precise/accurate in holding location or following tracks, etc.?

  • @TNAROHfan

You can thank the military for the 5 feet limitation. They will NEVER allow it to be more accurate for civilian purposes. It's always gonna bounce in between 0 and 5. Set your boat scale down below what you think you need also. In my experience that works best, unless you have a giant boat or in howling wind. I usually run mine at -2 for a 17 foot aluminum boat and it is about as accurate as I can get it. Point into the wind, come to as much of a complete stop as you can and hit the spot lock. That helps.

The only time I've had problems with spot lock is in dead calm situations. If there's a wind or a current it works fine, but if I'm crappie fishing in a dead calm bay, and if the boat drifts off one way or another it tends to over react and kicks the boat one way or another to try to get back to its starting point. Sometimes it does it pretty hard and almost knocks you off your feet

@@4wheelliving132 a LOT of people are having problems with the spot lock on Gen 1 Ultrex motors. There's actually a 'laundry list' of issues with the Ultrex. Steering sensors not sealed, exposed to the environment, spot lock malfunctioning/not working, nav function not working, foot pedal not water-resistant with connectors exposed and not corrosion or water-resistant and so on and so on. When CS is contacted instructions are given to disassemble the foot pedal and unplug/reconnect any connectors to free connector of corrosion(wth?). Go to your system menu and find boat scale. There are 5 different scales, try -1 or -2. This boat scale is determining how much power the trolling motor puts out to get it back on spot. A bigger heavier boat would need more thrust than a lighter boat.

    • @humminbird_tips_and_tricks

You don't need the heading sensor for spot lock at all. The heading sensor provides compass input for the jog feature. Additionally, you can use the heading sensor as a source for your networked Humminbird unit(s) if you have an Ipilot-Link trolling motor. This source is only available to the HB units when the trolling is deployed.
You can calibrate the sensor using the main motor or trolling motor. The size of the circles don't matter either.

I meant it should be in the middle of the boat like near the console. Not up front. Or back. Putting it in the front takes away from the move over 5 ft part and makes the back of the boat spin around. If you put it say near the console the boat will stay pointed the way you want it and not spin around.

My Ulterra does OK in spotlock; however, it occasionally chokes itself on the power cord and shuts down. You don't always notice until you boat drifts into the rocks. These are supposed to have the ability to know how many times the auto steering turns in each direction and then goes back to normal to prevent wrapping itself on the coiled power wire. I can find no videos or internet info about this problem. Maybe my problem is unique. Right now I have it in for warranty repair; but, they say they can't repeat the problem. Wonder how they test it on a workbench that doesn't move around like a boat?

    Question:
Can I adjust my calibration so the trolling motor situates my helm on top of the spot locked waypoint? I fish from my Center Console and would like it to take me to where I can drop my lure right off the side without having to go to the bow.
Also, fyi, my transducer is at the back of the boat on the transom, so I’d also love it to take me and set me where my transom is right over the spot locked point, so I’m thinking a 20’ offset (20’ boat) to put the back of the boat where I want it.

recently purchased a used boat and dont have any of the manuals. fished today and the spot lock on my ultrex 112 worked really good but did encounter one problem. when i would manually operate trolling motor and get 2 where i wanted to be, about 60% of the time when i turned spotlock on it would rotate all the way around and kick itself off. i tried waiting till the boat stopped its direction of travel and that helped a little. the only way that i got it to work 100% was to wait until the boat was motionless (not moving at all) it would spot up and not kick itself off. any thoughts???

I noticed you had your heading sensor mounted up near the trolling motor. I have a 22 foot Mako, and I was going to mount my heading sensor on the console which would put the heading sensor approximately 10 to 11 feet away from the trolling motor. Is there a limit to how far the heading sensor can be mounted away from the trolling motor.

Hey I have a 16' Express 1672 Jon that I have put a center console on and set up for fishing mainly off the back of the boat. As far as a new trolling motor and graph set up do you think a 12 volt 55 lb thrust would be good for spotlock or do I need 24 volt? Also any input on a 7 or 9" hummingbird setup. Mostly catfish and crappie fishing with this boat.

Great straightforward simple instructions in a manageable time byte. Thank you. Do you have any experience with mounting Mega Live via Livescanner, Targetlock, or other products onto the Ulterra? Currently TargetLock is only offered for the Ultrex, but I agree with you that the Ulterra is the best trolling motor ever, and I don't want to sacrifice my auto-deploy/stow for the sake of my Mega Live... Any advice as to aftermarket DIYs, or mounting brackets that may fit the Ulterra (without impeding performance), would be greatly appreciated.

I will tell you I usually install any upgrades myself but this time about a week go I had a marine shop install a brand new terrova right out do the box and they said it was a pain the ass because my boat is a little older and the bow wasn't strong enough to hold it so they had to manufacture a plate below the bow where it mounts to as well as above and they hit me for 6 hours of labor when it would normally be about 2 hours. They all scratched the bottom of the motor where the prop is so I've never even had it in water and it already looks used not which is annoying. They must have dragged it by the motor head on the concrete garage floor
