As a former Army helicopter crew chief I can say that Adams heat signature on the engines and pipes is very accurate.
Four years later: Adams is grey. That bubble mirror is busted and Norm still wears that shirt!!!

Adam... I know this is way late and I haven't seen your finished product on the rocket pack.
To make the exhaust in combination with your lighting, what about using computer cooling fans (1 for each exhaust) with a CO2 fire extinguisher triggered with the hand controller?
Just a thought and probably too late...
It's been 7 years... I saw the pack in the background of many of his newer vids but can't find any video of him completing it or even showing the completed piece. What gives?

No offense, but i was hoping for a working rocket engine...
Funny story. Disney Junior came out with a new Rocketeer show this November. However Disney forgot to release any merchandise for the show before Christmas. I'd expect this from other companies, but not Disney.
@Adam be careful with self stick led. Heat and such makes the cheap ones delaminate and wrecks it. I found out the hard way
Wait, Adam can't make it shoot flames? Really?!?!? I could make it shoot flames and I'm nowhere near as smart or experienced as he is. All it would take is a pressurized stable fuel source, a pressurized gas, two spark plugs, two injectors, and some controls. I mean, I couldn't legally make it because it would basically be a very efficient flamethrower at worst and a really big inefficient butane torch at best, but with the companies he works with it would be not problem at all.

Actually, it was pretty much posted less than a month after this video.
It is called "Adam Savage Surprises Fans at Comic Con" and while it isn't the same type of video showing weathering detail or anything, it does show the entire costume in good detail as he walks around the convention.
The finished costume was also shown in Tested's 2012 SDCC Photo Gallery and got featured in some mainstream media, including Entertainment Weekly.

Love to coloration of the braided tubing. For those that don't know the colors actually come from the oxidation of steel at different temperatures from 400 to 800 deg F; at 480 deg F the steel will turn brown, at 520 deg F it will turn purple, at 575 deg F it will turn blue, and at 800 deg F it will turn grey.
I'm so far back, the bubble mirror hasn't shattered yet!

Problem with the Rocketeer is its set in 1938 but it has a 1928 Gee Bee in it as if it was a new plane. That always bugged me.
i take it you have the helmet?? as i love that thing sooo much the way it kinda locks on to the top of the pack and makes it all streamlined...... awsome adam is the don of knoledge hehehe

Please put an aerosol can cartridge in this thing so you can shoot flames out the engines!
+DUTCHswift - I think a fan and smoke along with fabric flames would be safer and nicer. Some aerosols have the nasty habit of exploding!!

I'd have gone with blues only for the flame led. The pack runs on alcohol, which produces a blue flame.
You don't want heat discoloration in aircraft parts as it indicates the heat treatment of the metal has been effected and the temper and properties may change. Usually jet engines have soot in the exhaust and titanium color (because hot parts tend to be titanium)

im not saying you hate it :) I loved that movie myself, i was just saying that a lot of people i know say that it wasn't vary good. They even make a reference in fanboys (if you haven't seen it see it its hilarious) to how its lame. "You have to stop spreading this rumor that Boba Fett is some kind of bad ass. He has a jet pack... so did the rocketeer really cool (sarcastic of course)"
I went to see the Rocketeer when I was 8 or 9 years old. The theater had a guy who dressed up as the Rocketeer to greet people in the theater, which was cool. About 40 minutes into the movie, I had to pee so I left the theater and went to the restroom. The Rocketeer was in one of the stalls going to the bathroom and he just put the helmet on the floor. I could have grabbed it and fled, but I chickened out. My thinking at the time was, "it might be the real Rocketeer and he'll get me".

Something finished? I was just about to say, Adam finish something! You have so many projects going. Personally I'd like to see less talking and more doing. Don't tell us about Rub and Buff, break some out and wax on wax off. I think some hands on could really add a new dimension to your videos. Who knows you might get further along if you put in time on some projects too? P.S. put Norm to work while you're at it.
They seem to struggle with what to call it, there are episodes where one of the hosts will call it shop, and Adam corrects them that it's his mancave. Others are reversed. Most start like this one with both being used in an awkward way.
Maybe they think its playful and fun for the intro, I think its just odd that they say it at all still.
Straw color is a higher temp color past the blue and purple. Remember heat treating in shop. Was going to use those led strips on my r/c Munsters style dragster. Prices change. Auto or home same thing. Home center just had 120 to 12v charger plug and was cheaper. Auto have to cut off power point plug.
You can get them at HobbyPartz(yes with a z). When you go to the website there will be different categories on the left, and one will be LED Lights. They will on that page in may different colors, but they are not $1 a foot ($13 for 2 meters) like Adams's Lights. Hope that helps.
Adam Savage is hard to interview. The best thing to do is let him talk about whatever he wants to talk about because it's always super interesting and on point. People make it hard to interview him by trying to dumb down what he says and directing his talking points. He doesn't need any of that, he just needs someone to hold the mic.
Can we please stop calling it a "Man Cave"? I watch these videos to see the projects being worked on and the thoughts of those doing it, not to watch a Gay pr0n movie. If that you thing, fine, great, but that's not why we're here.
I can not for the life of me remember what the piece of kit is called that he has the LEDs hooked up to that the voltage can be adjusted. Can anyone help me out with this? Great videos also! Please release more and more frequently if you can!
So if I ever want to get Adam Savage's attention, I just have to find the clasps from the Rocketeer.
oh my lord norm is so annoying. its like he is fake and only is there to ask questions and make statements to lead to more dialog . so annoying!
Adam needs to give credit to Dave Stevens, the brilliant comic book writer/artist who created the Rocketeer -- including the rocketpack, helmet and jacket designs duplicated in the movie.
Well then, dude.........get yourself a big block of urethane foam, a set of rasps and start messin' up the garage. As Elias Howe and some other guy (spacin' on his name, right now) said, "Make it sew!"
Having access to seemingly unlimited funds must be incredible.
The cheapest ROCKETEER pack resin kit I've seen is upwards of $500 and that's UNFINISHED.
So, yes..."envy" is what I'm feeling now.
every one hated this movie but the rocket pack was a beautiful prop, and the helmet was an early version of what they designed the first iron man helmet to look like. (the one at the start of iron man 1)
It didn't..well, not really. I was peping (pepakura) my helmet, and then found out it had the wrong eyeholes. Then I couldn't afford to buy the jacket, just a bunch of things that didn't work out at once. Maybe next year.

Adam, the blue on the braided tube is too much and the purple should fade to a brownish color. Otherwise, really cool. Don't know if you'll ever see this :P
Allow me to clarify: Amazon sells them for $1.00/ft. In the latest video(Bourne Burn-bag)Adam explains this...just uploaded a few hours ago.(9/6/2012)
So... This *isn't* the Rocketeer Rocket Pack as the title states, but rather the *engines* from the rocket pack.
Adam should wear a bald cap and go to Comic Con as Walter White from Breaking Bad... :D

Pretty good replica discoloration; the diffuser of the rolls royce jet engines I work on look like that almost exactly.
Recording to the Star Trek voyage DVD special features. The original pack from the film. was used in some of the Captain proton episodes ( Tom pairs Holodeck programs)

Use fibreglass strands and put them in front of the led's and put a fan inside to give the illusion of flames.
I did I saw it. I just don't like the term, I prefer Shop, just like Adam does. Man Cave just sounds.... wrong.
Add some flame with David's design. Search for EDF afterburner.
This would give the look and the sound :)
Yeahs it's an adjustable power supply, I think that one is an extech brand. Its voltage and output adjustable.
The rocket engines look like small APU turbines from a large twin or a small luxury jet.

Thanks, I think I'm going to work on it slowly at the beginning of the year so it'll look really good by October....hopefully. But we all know how life can change drastically in the span of a year.

I know you said you used urethane resin for the thrust directors i guess i will call them.
Just an idea, but something with an incredibly similar shape would be a automotive turbine, similar shape/size plus you would get a nice turbine in the bottom. Not criticizing just a thought i had watching this.

Thank you for doing these videos, i notice that Norm and Will are getting more and more comfortable with Adam and this whole concept, at first it felt a little uncertain, but now things are falling into place. Keep up the good work!

I loved the Rocketeer.. one of those big movies form my childhood. If I EVER went all in on a costume, a Rockteer costume would certainly be up there.

I don't know what it is about Adam, but I could watch the dude talk about this stuff all day long. The way his mind works is just fascinating.

This was great. One of my favorite movies as a child, and still one of my favorite heroes' signature tools being re-created by one of my heroes.
