I have been in and out of therapy since I was a child. Haven't really found a therapist that I trust and can stick with. My last therapist lasted a year but after every session I'd find myself crying or hostile days after. If I'm not retreating from the world I'm angry and sad. I appreciate these videos to better help me understand why I am this way...

Thank you so much Dr Snipes! I love the way you teach us about the process including a bit of science. It feels to me like you have faith in us as learners which feels to me like a beautiful gift. Plus, it's wonderful to be reminded, as I seek to develop patience and compassion for myself (and others) that we can't just walk out of a long term trauma-based environment and be all better the next day, but that we definitely can get better. The stroke survivor is a handy metaphor for me to bear in mind and in heart, rather than being hard on myself because I haven't been able to accomplish all my dreams, by yesterday at the latest.

Funny you mention “we don’t expect someone who had a stroke to just get up and go back to work…” that was the cherry on top of pre-existing c-ptsd, a chiropractic adjustment tearing an artery in my neck and causing stroke. Back to work at a physical job as a single mother rocking back and forth pretending I’m okay. Two years later I’m still in functional freeze. Doing somatic experiencing. I’ve come a long way but still frozen to joy. Feel like I’m trapped in my body. Thanks for this information.

@@DocSnipes I wish I knew more methods. If I go into fight or flight it's like something has taken over and I am no longer at the helm. When or how I manage to break out of it is a crap shoot. Sometimes it seems it has been an act of God. Though, it happens less frequently with less amplitude now. I used to ask my husband to show empathy, make eye contact, offer a hug or comforting touch if I was receptive. (This makes me kinda sad to think of the level of distress I have been in for a lifetime.) The freeze response is much the same. When the feelings come over me of sadness, loneliness, abandonment nothing seems to help very much in that moment and I honestly mostly wait it out. I learned havening in an online trauma group, but haven't tried it for freeze response. Conscious breathing helps for fight or flight if I have the wherewithal to use it.

The place I live has never felt safe and I'm away from my daughter. Moving home on Sunday, back to my village where she lives too and I feel safe after 7 long years, so bring on the healing ☺. I learned something today. When I go into stress response, I stop eating. This stresses me out. I haven't eaten in days, haven't eaten much in a month, have no appetite. I have five day weekends this time of year, and I spend them in bed, on an empty stomach, looking at the ceiling fan. I should eat. But food is flavorless. I know eating is the path forward. Still i can't get out of this bed to do it.

I'm in the fluck it stage. I guess this explains why I can't sleep. I'm lucky if I can sleep over 1hr at a time. I'm also losing things and can't concentrate. I lose my car keys so much that I attached a hammer to my keyring to make it easier to find. It's virtually impossible to watch movies and follow the plot. I can watch a movie a dozen times and always see something new. When I do watch movies it's the older low budget ones because they're easier to follow, but even those I have to watch multiple times to fully understand the plot

18:00 "Shouldn't feel this way, struggling with it... this is what's activating the stress response." There's so much one does not have control over when you have a physically painful condition that has no cure, no surgery, nor medication remedy. Just add auto immune disorders, stir, and it all mixes and piles on. Being in pain every day wears on you. Good sleep gets shattered. Just soldiering on because there's shopping to do, bills to pay, laundry to wash, food to cook, spouse to support, no matter how bad I feel-- Sometimes things that shouldn't be triggering, are, because your reserve is plundered. A hammered HPA Axis must be the answer. It seems like Don Quixote's invisible foe, because--in a way, it is. But at least now I think I have a lead, if not an answer...

When I panic, my veins constrict, I definitely notice, and my blood pressure goes pretty high, and then the fears of impending heart attack, which might be not real, panics me even more: this belief developed over years of believing that dealing with certain problems could give me a heart attack. So now almost any minor issue worries me and get me into panic, and I have to take an anxiety pill to calm down. Is funny that back then I used to argue and scream without any concern of high blood pressure or heart attack. Even though I have been able lately to perform certain activities that I thought would cause me a heart attack, like exercising. Has been a long process of improvement through efforts, experimentation and getting informed 😅🙄 in addition, I have been through a couple pretty bad traumas, and most likely I have undiagnosed PTSD, bit of depression and who knows what else

Takes time, lot of "me time", morning/daily routines. Quality sleep, food, regular walks etc. Avoid certain things (temporarily). And as mentioned, you want to take care of the body, expand the "capacity" or "window of tolerance" to handle things. But it's doable.

Thank you Doc. I am stuck in fight (I’m not disrespectful, I just stand my ground) or flight mode when I am in a stressful situation. A lot of times when I am mistreated by someone, I do both. It happens more so at work. So I have more work to do with my healing ❤️‍🩹 due to my childhood trauma and being on autopilot. Takes time, like you said to rebuild.
