I watched this movie frequently as a kid, so I can't hate it. It's very flawed, but also fun. I love that this movie gave us the "we got to have money" meme. I agree that Richard Kind perfectly suits Tom. I don't mind Dana Hill as Jerry. Her voice is what I kind of imagined for Jerry before I heard him talk in the movie. Part of me feels like watching this again, since it's been so long since I last watched it. XD

Wow great review of this movie. I was definitely expecting raging crap talk as it typically gets. Probably the most fair criticisms I’ve ever heard. I never hated the film myself as a Tom and Jerry fan. I always enjoyed the movie myself for what it was. I understood the criticisms having heard them now, but they didn’t effect enough to hurt my enjoyment. I didn’t see all the direct to video ones, but I’m convinced this movie is a heck of a lot more watchable then those at least. You have fair opinions where it’s due. Even if a film not great. I was also fascinated that Tom and Jerry full on spoke, and was never taken out of it. It was quite nostalgia for me. Never was it better then the original cartoons of course. But still enjoyed it. Got a kick out of some of the songs. Lol The whole connection with Robin and her dad had it’s emotional moments. There were genuine feels with story elements.

Honestly I actually liked the fact that Tom and Jerry talked in this movie and honestly I’d love to see them talk again! Bring Richard Kind back as Tom!
I actually remember having this on VHS as a kid and rather enjoying it, even if I'm more critical of it as an adult. For those complaining about Tom and Jerry speaking, they did have some shorts that include substantial dialogue (Blue Cat Blues) being one of them. I also actually kind of liked the visuals in the Money song and Robin's lament for her dad is rather moving at times. I mean, this movie is shit compared to the original shorts, but as far as I'm concerned it's at least more watchable than the shitstream of direct-to-DVD movies that feature the duo.

I saw this movie when I was younger and I found it to be mildly entertaining. When I watched it again years later I thought it was entertainingly bad. I would categorize it as "so bad it's good".
I thought this was a pretty fair review and I agree with you on the songs being the worst part. I think it's okay as an animated film on its own but I still find it terrible as a Tom and Jerry film. Fun facts are that Tom's voice actor later voiced Bing Bong in Inside Out and Jerry's voice actress also voiced another male mouse named Scrappy prior to the movie in Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures

Let's face it it's impossible to have these characters have any personality since they don't utter a single word So it does make a bit easier on younger viewers to see both their points of view Yes I know this was reviled by critics and even hardcore fans but it stuck with me on a certain level and Roman’s heart is in the right place since a movie was in development since the 1970s The movie is filled with all the traditional slapstick animation, dozens of new songs by Henry Mancini, and some pretty choice voice actors including the late Charlotte Rae, the late Tony Jay, Dana Hill, Richard Kind, and Andi McAfee The music emulates the classic Hollywood musicals of 1950s My favorite number is actually Do I Miss You because it signifies how much Robyn misses her father willing to go the distance to be reunited with him Henry Mancini does compose a very good score too Okay not all the songs work and some side characters could be cut out since it is titled Tom & Jerry who have to put aside their differences Clearly this movie was made to catch up with the Disney renaissance since it was dominating that era So I don't hate this movie one bit, but I do understand how fans of the old show wouldn't sit right with it I suppose I'm just not a dedicated fan like most were back in the day This is very short, has good animation reminiscent of the old cartoon shorts,and will keep the younger viewers entertained giving a simple lesson on learning to work together; it's more beneficial than being confrontational If anything you can look at it as an alternate universe if you're not too much of a passionate fan of Tom & Jerry

Namely it was the indicators of not taking the audience seriously, having little understanding of its source material (all things considered, as someone who watched Tom and Jerry all the time as a kid), taking the focus away from Tom and Jerry to pull the evil-money-hungry-villains and lost-orphan-trying-to-find her family... these are just some of the laziest clichés you can find in animation. Sorry, this wasn't for me. (And having Tom and Jerry, one of the greatest animation/comedy duos play second fiddle to an orphan girl who can do no wrong, it makes it feel more like a self-insert fanfic more than anything else.) But I understand (to an extent) how some can enjoy this. I still don't have the nerve to even touch the Willy Wonka crossover.

After seeing your clip, I hunted down the whole Money song on TH-cam and while I agree the tune could have been spruced up with some variety the lyrics are great. I really wish the movie could've explored how bonding over a love of material things and living a wealthy lifestyle might have broken down over time or if it could've been the craziest, best thing to keep Figg and Lickboot's relationship together. It's unusual to have characters that focused on greed yet so friendly and affectionate. If the writers had thought about it a little more, the villains might've become the best part of the movie. :) On a tangential note, I've never watched Idiocracy but maybe I should. Frito: I can't believe you like money too. We should hang out. Cameraman: Totally.

I agree with practically everything you said about it. My biggest problem is the songs and the plot, i would like a lot more if they put more elements of the show instead of creating this “kidnapped girl” plot. Where is mommy two shoes? Where is Spike? This could be about Tom & Jerry saving then or something like this instead of this generic plot that doesn’t even fit in with the franchise.

For the first few minutes (Apart from the unfunny slapstick in the opening) it really looked like it was going to set itself up for a movie that could've worked had it not be about the little girl or Tom and Jerry talking. Like if the movie was about Big Mama (the black woman from the original shorts) getting captured by the aunt in the movie as a hostage and Tom and Jerry were forced to work together in New York to look for her, then it would've been really funny seeing the two call on Spike the dog to help them kick the shit out of the fat bastard mutt on the skateboard and the butler all in the same fight.

Compare to the 2021 Tom & Jerry movie, the 1992 animated film is much better than the 2021 film. I think the 2021 film should have been a remake to the 1992 film, with Tom & Jerry able to speak and the two willingly put aside their long-time pettiness. And compare to the other animated Tom & Jerry films after this, the 1992 film is in my opinion the best Tom & Jerry movie.
I do get what your getting from, Jambareeqi. there's half good and half bad in this movie. To be fair, Shaun The Sheep uses more sounds than Tom & Jerry and it works for the premise of the movie. but, silent comedy should always give a charming thing in minority for feature films targeted to kids and adults that Tom and Jerry just wants to attract the kids watching than hearing no dialogue from them. Still, this film is mediocre at it's finest. I might have a special comment for you in June.

To be fair, Shaun The Sheep uses more sounds than Tom & Jerry and it works for the premise of the movie. but, silent comedy should always give a charming thing in minority for feature films targeted to kids and adults that Tom and Jerry just wants to attract the kids watching than hearing no dialogue from them. Still, this film is mediocre at it's finest.
