    Here's the thing about this movie; a Tom and Jerry movie had been in development hell since the mid-70's, but they always ran into problems with finding a decent script, as it was a struggle to make a Tom and Jerry movie given the hallmarks of the franchise (characters who don't talk and slapstick) don't exactly lend themselves very well to a feature length adventure like say Mickey Mouse or the Looney Tunes do. At one point in the early 80's, MGM seriously considered making a live action Tom and Jerry movie with Chevy Chase and Dustin Hoffman playing the duo in costumes. Note that Tom and Jerry and the Magic Ring, the first direct to video movie, is just barely an hour long, and with many of the more recent direct to video movies being the two shoehorned into adventures in the land of Oz or with Sherlock Holmes or in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory and the recent live action movie also having a ton of subplots and live action characters, it's obvious that certain writers will struggle finding a decent length adventure for the pair.

    • @chocodoeeyes

      I never saw this movie as a kid (I grew up with The Magic Ring) so looking at this now I can definitely see the development hell situation. They’re literally throwing ideas at the wall because how DO you adapt these guys to the big screen other than make them chase and maim each other for over an hour? Of course they’d have problems coming up with a story and make a voice reveal their big marketing selling point. But hey people like it anyway in spite of themselves because childhood and that’s enough for me lol

      The animation, musical score, and performances were all also done better in the 2021 film.

      @@thecriticalthinkeroutsidet4947 not exactly, while the animation was technically well made and achievably ambitious, it would have been convenient to also include hand drawn hand drawn animation for some moments while the other parts in cel shaded worked great for the crazy shots, since they look obvious that they were cel shaded in isomesubtle moments, the performances were cool in terms of casting choices for the live actors, especially many having fun for for their roles, although MOST OF THEM were actually mean spirited or unlikable such as Pena's character, while the voice acting was generally fine, some felt weird like Butch's case and even the autotune style singing voice of Tom (I think), and i can agree that the music suited well for the type of film it was set in New York and the Hotel, but there wasnt much of a highlight. Besides, Actually, the celeb actors that were in the 1993 film, unlike others, were ALL MAINLY VOICE ACTORS, even the duo werent that recognizable CELEBS exactly like whas been happening in Jetsons Movie or Scoob.

      @scoutart1508 The production behind the 2021 film literally conceived an alternative of 2D animation and with reference by experienced 2D artists. Not cel shading. It's the exact style and feel of 2D animation achieved under the quicker production times of a CGI workflow, who also completely every tradition and realism of CGI. That's incredibly innovative and different than anything done prior.
      The 1992 movie's animation may be 2D, but it's still nowhere near as smooth and expressive as the cartoons release YEARS beforehand.
      So many casting choices for the 1992 film were baffling. People like Tony Jay were clearly cast because of how synonymous he is with Disney, and yes, Richard Kind and Dana Hill were famous in their release, and their natural voices don't suit the characters. Chloe Grace Moretz as the straight-man to Tom and Jerry alone was more entertaining to watch than characters in the 1992 film that are so one-note I don't know their names.
      The 2021 movie also has a phenomenal score that evokes the jazzy and brassiness of the cartoons, and Tom singing a jazz number is one of them. The 1992 movie's music are songs that poorly imitate Disney, and not even the score is anything to write home about.
      Henry Mancini has delivered TONS of innovative and legendary music, even the Peter Gunn theme. This nowhere near reflects his style and creativity.

      @@thecriticalthinkeroutsidet4947 it is obvious that it was CEL SHADED ANIMATION, besides, even though I had fun with the 2021 film as part of the WB animation lineup and I dont necessarily despise it, it turned out to be the weakest of the list, especially for my taste in terms of the execution of its story that was left to be desired and especially most of its unnecessary humor. (By the way, havent we commented before about this on previous accounts, because for a moment I thought it was the host of the video who responded my comment)

      @@scoutart1508 CGI animation is usually lifeless and has a sense of realism in its visuals and motion.
      Tom & Jerry (2021) was animated in CGI underneath, but every single technique derived exclusively from 2D animation was injected into the final look. MANY new techniques were introduced behind its production, even including 2D artists working in tandem with them to create software.
      In traditional animation, you even create key poses that are then in-betweened within frames. Even that was embraced.
      Director Tim Story called its animation "2D+", which is the exact style and feel of 2D animation achieved by a CGI workflow, as one thing CGI does have over 2D is the fact that it's faster to animate than drawing every cel.
      It's not a bad thing to take risks and bring in new, creative ideas. Especially a direction that is unlike anything a CGI is used to, while being more in the vein of traditional animation.
      The characters here even look and feel like characters from the world of Tom and Jerry. The 1992 movie's character designs look like a poor imitation of Disney models, and even then, the animation, while 2D, is still nowhere near the quality of the shorts released years beforehand.

And today, looked at again with adult eyes, I realize that the film is, in fact, a total madness. I understood years later, well after falling in love with "Two for the Road", "Breakfast at Tiffany's" or "Victor Victoria" that the music was by Mancini, and that surely explains why all the Songs from the film have always stuck in my head. I can’t tell you how many times I watched this movie as a kid. Granted a lot of critics gave it a scathing review, I loved it. Plus, I adored Robyn. She was my favorite out of all of the characters in that film.
    PS I actually have Robyn Starling’s original cell artwork (from the studio) framed on my wall.

    Me as a kid: Sees a good animated movie with an amazing soundtrack. “Wow I bet people love this movie as much as I do!”
    Movie Reviewers: “And yeah this movie bombed at the box office and I’m ashamed to say I kinda like it.”
    Me as an adult: WHYYY? HOOOOWWWW? Seriously though, this is what I hate about people on the internet who review media, wanting to have this aura of a refine taste to the point wacky fun and a good song perhaps extending the run time is seemingly a sin and qualifies for a “bad” movie. Not saying it’s flawless, but the amount of people who confuse this amount of quality to genuinely bad films is too many for my liking.

    Ironically the only time I like “Tom and Jerry”. Funny how many familiar voices are in this movie; in fact, the voices of Pugsy and Robin’s dad were done by Ed Gilbert (Baloo from “Talespin”), Jerry is voiced by Dana Hall, I believe (Max from “Goof Troop”), and Richard Kind plays Tom (Molt from “A Bug’s Life” and Bing Bong from “Inside Out”.

    This movie was actually my first exposure to Tom & Jerry. To the point where when I first watched actual episodes of it later, I wondered why they weren't talking and where Robyn was.
    (I was a little kid when I first saw it so I never processed the significance of the scene where they express surprise at talking for the first time)
    But this movie will always have a special place in my heart and I wish the characters it introduced would at least get references/cameos sometimes.

    I loved this movie, too, as a kid, and I always watched it whenever it came on.
    I think a bit of why the movie was the way it was is because of the Disney Renaissance which was in full swing abd peaking critically when ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (1991) came out the year prior, and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture. Practically every other animated film during the 90s was copying the Disney formula with “I Want” protagonists, catchy musical numbers, and over the top villains, and this movie was no exception.
    To answer your question Lickboot’s seeming sudden concern for Robyn, it could simply be a case of what TV Tropes terms ‘Even Evil Has Standards’. Or, as the Fridge Logic page for this movie puts it:
    *“… Apart from his obvious Greed motivator, the reason behind this strange behavour may be way darker. As a lawyer, he knows exactly what crimes he and Figg would be charged with if Robyn got hurt. This can also explain why he looks so relaxed during his introduction scene: paying a police officer to find a child in a city district is easy. Paying a police officer to find a child in an isolated cabin in the wilderness is not. Especially when your client is responsible for burning it to the ground with the child inside.“*

    In Captain Kiddy's defence, as far as he's concerned Robin's just a lost kid that he's returning to her family - granted, in return for a very handsome reward, but still - I don't think he's on the same level as the other adults in this movie, who all absolutely know how awful they are being.

  • @Wendy_O._Koopa
    @Wendy_O._Koopa 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I don't know why everyone goes crazy when someone doesn't talk for a while. Mario was never a silent protagonist, he talked like nobody's business, he was a referee, announcing and counting in the ring, he wah and yahooed all over the place, he thanked you for playing his game. Except in Paper Mario, _specifically._ After _Paper Mario_ came out, everyone started to get weird, saying they could never make a Mario cartoon or movie, because it would be to strange to hear Mario talking in full sentences. Then similar things with Link, Tom, and Jerry, characters who can all scream, and have said words, so it's implied that they _can_ talk, they just _don't._ I was so happy that this movie was finally giving them _canon_ voices, so if it wasn't a "joke" each time, they wouldn't be completely different, and we'd finally get some consistency... but that was apparently too much to ask for.
    Then there's Wile Ethelbert Coyote. In Bugs Bunny cartoons, Wile E. talks in full sentences, using elevated diction, and nobody seems to care at all. I'm not sure why? Is it because it's only _half_ of a previously silent duo? Because the Road Runner has spoken English in comic books, does that complete... _something_ and make it blasphemous?

    • @PedroBenolielBonito
      @PedroBenolielBonito หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wait, Wile E. Coyote talks? ROAD RUNNER talks?! When does this happen?
      More to the point, and reversing your own question, why is everyone obsessed with making characters like that talk? Shaun the Sheep proved it's possible to be the protagonist of not one, but TWO full-length films without ever uttering a word, so there's no excuse for that sort of destruction of character anymore.

    • @Wendy_O._Koopa
      @Wendy_O._Koopa หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@PedroBenolielBonito Wile E. Coyote talks in "Operation: Rabbit," "To Hare Is Human," "Rabbit's Feat," and "Compressed Hare." The Road Runner has only spoken in comic books, a medium where you can't really use body language or other clues.
      Anyhow, I'd hardly call it "an obsession." Most people simply aren't mimes, if you're gonna do a silent cartoon, do a silent cartoon. Tom & Jerry's problem is that everyone, and I mean _everyone_ except for Tom and Jerry themselves talks. It's actually kind of distracting, because they aren't treated as mute in universe; everyone just accepts that they don't talk. There's no sign language, or literal signs pulled from hammerspace; instead, it's treated like a show where a voice actor died, had a scheduling issue, or got fired, or something. Then there's all this clunky dialogue around it, like in the Sonic Christmas special where it opens with him saying "Don't say another word, Sal." to imply that Sally had been talking his ears off, or something. Just because they were to lazy or cheap to hire Kath Soucie... -hey, it's Tuffy.-

    For as long as I could remember watching television, I've always been a Tom and Jerry fanatic. But this movie might be my earliest memory of being disappointed. In fact, for a while I tried to convince myself to like it; even though I realised I really didn't.
    My problem with this movie is not that Tom and Jerry speak, I actually don't think it's a bad idea for them to put aside their differences to fight a bigger foe. My problem is that the cat & mouse duo get upstaged in their own movie. I mean it is without its good qualities, as the villains are so meme worthy at this point.
    Also, I think Lickboot started to become concerned for Robin's safety, because he feared the plan wouldn't work otherwise.
    But still, it's this movie that showed me that hype can be a trap, some things just don't live to that. And that Tom and Jerry have always had their highs and lows. I look forward to what mayhem they'll get up to next (for better or for worse).
