I did a terrible job at explaining this video. Every series in this list I at least own one of the books from the series, so any series I've read in the past and unhauled, I haven't included that series here (like the Infinity Cycle series by Adam Silvera and What If It's Us etc.), but I also DID forget to include some series that I DO own and want to read still, like the Raven Cycle series and These Violent Delights and more, so there should be more on the list that I just totally missed on my reading spreadsheet haha forgive me 🙏🏼

I remember binge-reading all 8 volumes of Heaven Official's Blessing in a week and came out of it a changed person. It's a slow burn but so, so worth it! Romance with incredible devotion!
A spreadsheet to track series is such a good idea! It's easy to loose track of books to read in a series, especially if you have to wait for the next book to be released. I currently have 14 series I'm working on. This video inspired me to create a "series tbr" tag on Goodreads to keep track of what books I need to read next 🙂

I don’t like second person POV either, but Jemisin uses it well and purposefully, and it’s only one of three POVs in the first book. I love the series!

Sweat and Soap is my favorite manga series of all time. It was so refreshing to see a functional adult relationship were they actually talking with each other and solve their problems together.
This would be so cool to have as a template! Using it to track my series would be super helpful because I'm really bad at remembering what I need (or even want) to continue if the series hasn't finished publishing. I use Notion to try and keep track of everything, but updating it is a hassle when I read so many new things all the time.

Fifth Season, yes the is a POV in second person but not all of it is and it’s just the first book that has that. It 1 of 3 POVs it has a reason for it and it’s one of my favorites but it just depends on how much you hate that I guess haha
I implore you to keep reading the Practical Magic series! I promise you, Practical Magic is without a doubt THE weakest book in the series, but the next two in the series are SO good. 💛

Ascendance of a bookworm is so good. I’ve only read the LN as I’ve heard it’s the best version in written form. I’ve read so many LN and nothing comes close except maybe jobless reincarnation (if you can get over the pervi aspect that seems to affect 80% of LN)
Can't recommend the Chronicles of Prydain enough! The Disney film is actually bits and pieces of the first two books smushed together, so if you enjoy the silliness of the film, I think you'll enjoy the books!
Okay, but instead of a first and last of Vampire Academy, how about a series vlog with spoilers like you've been doing for the more nostalgia style books. I think VA is old enough at this point that plenty enough people have read it to do spoilers. AND, after reading the books, you could also watch the movie and give us your thoughts on that as well!

I'm not a fan of second person, but I didn't actually notice the second person until it was pointed out. It's not all in second. (Just checked book 3 since it's on my tbr cart.)

I have a suggestion!! There's going to be a new Final Destination movie coming out in 2025!!! Maybe read that series around then? I have not seen a definitive theater date, only that it will be 2025, and it is supposed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the franchise, which first came out in 3/2000. So... maybe the 6th movie will be out in 3/2025.
There are so many books on your list that are also on mine. Maybe I will have to buddy read with you on reading sprints or something. I still need to read Crescent City so I can watch your video!
I would also highly recommend reading the Cursed Princess Club YA graphic novel series. You would adore that one, especially if you are a Webtoons fan (where Lore Olympus was first published). Add the Sir Callie series by Esme Symes-Smith to your reading list as well!! They write children's books, and Sir Callie has amazing LGBTQ+ representation!

Scum Villain's Self-Saving System is everything to me. Its such a fun critique of male power fantasies/harem dramas and a love letter to fans and fan creations. The mc is such an unreliable narrator who is so deel in denial about so many things that you cannot trust a word he says. So glad its on your list! Its my favorite book and i keep coming back to it no matter what ive read in the years since i first picked it up.
I NEED you to continue the Red Rising series asap! It’s my favorite series of all time. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Hi Gavin! About the Broken Earth series; it's not completely in second person. I've only read the first book but maybe 1/3 or less is in second person. It's kind of like multiple POVs and "you" is one of them. It gets explained later on and as someone who also hates second person, I thought it was brilliant and I loved it very much.
The Thursday Murder club books are best experienced by audiobook. I loved them,

I loved the Chronicles of Prydain as a kid, but I had also never read fantasy quite like that at the time. So I was shocked by every reveal. 😂

I’m having a ‘finishing all the series I’m in the middle of’ year so I’ve whittled mine down to 21 series 😅 but it’s easy done to start so many and not finish! I think you would really like the Villains series from V. E. Schwab, it’s very fast paced and exciting, especially if you like darker tone superhero movies/stories
I’m almost done with the second book of The Bone Witch series by rin chupeco and I gotta say I’m LOVING IT!

I recently watched an anime called Buddy Daddies, there isn't a manga for it which is a shame, but just based off some of the manga you're enjoying this might be one to look into. There is an English dub version and subbed as well. It was a favorite for me.
PTSD Radio is pretty cool but fyi it's a bunch of shorts. Some are as short as 1-2 pages but can go as long as 20-30; as you will read them you will notice they seem to involve the same city and more connections will appear. Unfortunately the magazine it was published in folded in a buyout so it never concluded where the overarching ties was going but you can still very much read it as is as a bunch of creepy shorts.
Birds of Shangri-La and Coyote are SO good. Also 300+ series, holy hell. I'm already overwhelmed with being in the middle of 15 lmao.

I used to only read completed series when I first started reading and I’d binge the whole series but now I like to do a mix of both newer books but also completed series.
I’m trying to tackle my massive tbr this year as I want to unhaul books I don’t absolutely love. I just own way too many books and I’m sure a lot of them I won’t love and want to keep so I’m making sure I finally read them to see

The Fifth Season is the only 2nd person POV (it's one of three for context) that I liked because the way it used it was interesting. However, I didn't like it in the 2nd and 3rd books. For me that first book was so so good and the others just didn't match it.

r.e. Made in Abyss the anime is gorgeous and has some of the best music I've ever heard in a series before so I highly recommend watching over reading it!
(also not sure if you knew but there's actually a live action version of Cherry Magic as it's how I was introduced to the series - it's a bit cheesy but I love the actor who plays the sempai! I think it was on Crunchyroll last time I checked)
Please read broken earth! It's only a portion written in 2nd person and that is a hard tense to write in but Jemisin nails it and does it for a reason. It enhances the story rather than being awkward or weird
Just went and purchased the book tracker from Ali. I also use storygraph to track my books and so I am getting the two in sync. I am blown away by all other tabs and breakdowns Ali gives! Thank you so much Gavin for putting me on to her and her work! I think since it is end of March when I am doing this I will wait until next year and then purchase a 5 year tracker from her too. Do you use more than the series tracker? What has it illuminated for you about your reading?
I was stressed about being in the middle of 45 series at the start of the year so I decided to DNF 5 of them 🤣

I've actually been trying to finish a bunch of the series i've started. I've been re-reading some books which I feel like i never do and I'm liking them even more the second time round, like Gideon the Ninth and also The Killing Moon + The Shadowed Sun what a great duology. On the other hand going back to the Three Dark Crowns series was just not worth the time.
Over 300 series??? Haha oh my gosh, that's so wild. It makes me wonder how many series I'm currently reading... I'm not a huge series reader so it's probably not anywhere near close to 300 haha but I'm still curious to see how many I'd have if I did this! I do read a lot of manga series haha

For the Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin, I’ve only read The fifth season, so maybe the other books are different, but I would say that the second person narrative is only one of the POVs in the book, and I think the one that doesn’t take as much space…
Although I actually didn’t personally like the second person either in this book, I felt that it was written this way to prevent us from understanding so we could have a big reveal 😅

Moriarty, the anime is good. I never read the manga so I can’t tell you if it’s good or not but I really like the anime.
On the subject of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, that's a series that looks incredibly long but can be broken down by the distinct parts that the manga itself is split into. Looking forward to the eventual struggle to choose a favorite JoJo!
I have a manga series that I think you will like Assassination Classroom by Yusei Matsui, just started reading it this year and it is amazing, we also watched the anime and it was brilliant. I think you will enjoy it, I managed to get my copies from my local library.
Its sooo hard to keep up with series, I also keep a spreadsheet and I forget to update it alot 😅
I'm not sure if you care about series missing on here, but I remember you mentioning the Keeper of the Lost Cities books before and they didn't appear to be on the list. I know you've DNFed them, so they aren't as important to track as something you plan on continuing, but just thought I would mention if you would like to have everything represented.
I did NOT know Nevermoor was supposed to be 9 books! I might have to DNF that one. Its taken FOREVER for 4 to come out. Patience is not a virtue I possess. 😂

The Broken Earth Trilogy has only 1 of the 3 POVs in second person. The first book is fantastic, the rest…. not so much. 😅
5th season only part of the first book is in second person. Rest is all normal
While it has issues, The Silence of the Lambs is probably worth reading.
I haven't really heard anything good about any of the later books. (I'm old. Red Dragon was the only other book in the series when I read it.)
The Silence of the Lambs is one of my top books and movies (the show, Hannibal, is excellent too, until they stupidly canned it like anything great ofc 😕) and Red Dragon is also fantastic.
I've read all the books and seen the movies, but they are definitely nowhere as good, however they are a very good insight to Hannibal Lector's backstory!
And I thought my list of 85 series was stressful lol.

The Chronicles of Prydain was the 1st High Fantasy I ever read as a 7-8 year old! I remember being blown away by it, and definitely want to buy the series for nostalgic reasons and reread it 🙂💖
That series and my Fighting Fantasy books go me into Fantasy as a kid 👏🐉⚔

ONE THING I want to tell you is Hero Academia seem cute light hearted and kinda boring at first
THEN IT ESCALATES TO THE BOYS LEVEL VIOLENCE. The villains are insane. The family drama is insane. Teachers die and get maimed. Thousands of civilians suffer horrible deaths. That doctor that Deku went to in book one? Not a doctor. Not an ethical one. SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TRUSTED WITH CHILDREN.
You know its like Red Wedding in game of thrones, lot of people randomly tuned in and were like wtf. I suggest picking episodes of the anime that are the most violent and watching those. Skip season 1. Watch and find out if you want to see more. But i gotta say, the beginning of hero acadmia just isnt the best part. The later parts - goddamn. 0-100.
Also i dont think what i say counts as actual spoilers because i havent specifically explained what happens but consider it SPOILER HINTS or LIGHT SPOILERS. It will help to think of the series as alot like X-men.
The Green Creek series by TJ Klune is phenomenal. I loved it and was so moved by it. Please reconsider dnfing it!! 🫶🏻
